First PlayStation 5 Details Revealed: PS5 Specs, PSVR Support, PS4 Backwards Compatibility, And More

Next-gen has been revealed a little bit early...kinda.

While its release is still far out, the PlayStation 5 is real. In an uncharacteristic step, Sony has revealed a variety of information about its upcoming next-generation system. In an interview with Wired, PlayStation 4 lead system architect Mark Cerny spoke about working on the PS4's successor, which at this point doesn't officially have a name but will presumably fall in line with Sony's past consoles and be called the PlayStation 5. Cerny revealed details about PSVR support, backwards compatibility, cross-gen game releases, specs, and much more. Some key details--such as a specific price and release date--are still unknown, but Sony reaffirmed during a recent investor's call that the system is still at least more than a year away.

In the Wired interview, Cerny confirmed the next-gen PlayStation is partially based on PS4 architecture, which means that it is backwards compatible. Cerny also revealed that it is not an all-digital device, and will accept physical discs. Wired's article describes the transition from PS4 to PS5, as indicated by Cerny, as a "gentle one," adding that numerous games will be released for both PS4 and the next-gen console. The description of a gentle transition indicates that the PS5 will be an iteration on the PS4, instead of being drastically different the way the PS3 was from its predecessor.

Now Playing: Sony Talks PS5 Specs, Backwards Compatibility, 8K, And More - GS News Update

Housed in the console will be an AMD chip that has a CPU based on the third-generation Ryzen. It'll have eight cores of the seven-nanometer Zen 2 microchip. Although the console will support 8K, displaying at this resolution will be dependant on TVs catching up.

The graphics, meanwhile, will be driven by a custom version of Radeon's Navi line. This graphics chip will support ray tracing, something which is starting to become popular in movies and video games. Although it is traditionally thought of as a lighting technique, Cerny says that there are implications beyond creating realistic environments.

"If you wanted to run tests to see if the player can hear certain audio sources or if the enemies can hear the players' footsteps, ray tracing is useful for that," he explained. "It's all the same thing as taking a ray through the environment."

In fact, audio is one the main improvements Cerny is keen to talk about. The AMD chip will enable 3D audio, and this, according to Cerny, is key to immersing players deeper. This naturally led to discussions of PlayStation VR, and while Cerny didn't confirm whether a new version of Sony's headset will be released, the existing one will be supported.

"I won't go into the details of our VR strategy ... beyond saying that VR is very important to us and that the current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console," he confirmed.

Another key leap the next PlayStation will make comes through its hard drive. According to Cerny, developers let Sony know that what they want solid-state drives in the new hardware, as opposed to the slower equivalents used in current consoles. These SSDs are relatively prevalent now in laptops, and what Sony is bringing to the next PlayStation is described as being specialized for the hardware.

Cerny demonstrated the change an SSD introduces to gaming by comparing a load sequence from Insomniac's Spider-Man on a standard PS4 Pro and a dev kit of the next-gen PlayStation. On the former, it was around 15 seconds, while on the latter it was 0.8 seconds. This, Cerny added, has implications on how the world can be rendered too, which in turn impacts how quickly Spidey can move through the world. On the new hardware, the camera moves through the city much quicker, as the hardware is capable of keeping up with rendering requirements.

Discussing the SSD, Cerny said "the raw read speed is important, but so are the details of the I/O [input-output] mechanisms and the software stack that we put on top of them. I got a PlayStation 4 Pro and then I put in a SSD that cost as much as the PlayStation 4 Pro—it might be one-third faster."

The shared architecture between PS4 and PS5, naturally, creates the path for games being developed on the former to appear on the latter. One such game is Death Stranding, which is developed by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and the Kojima Productions team. In the interview, Cerny was asked how Death Stranding fits into Sony's PS5 plans to have cross-generation releases, and reportedly smiled, before a spokesperson merely repeated the game would come to PS4. Obviously, this isn't a clear indication of what Sony's plans are, but could perhaps be a tease, given the context.

Cerny didn't provide any details on any of the services or a broader overview of PlayStation's vision for the next-generation of gaming, instead focusing on the nitty-gritty of its hardware. It is currently unclear when the console will be fully unveiled. Traditionally, Sony would has debuted its new PlayStations at E3, but the company will not have its usual press conference this year. This leaves PlayStation Experience, one of its new Nintendo Direct-like State of Play streams, or a standalone PS5 announcement event as possibilities--that is assuming it plans to reveal the PlayStation 5 this year.

It is also unclear when Sony plans to launch the PS5. In May 2018, Sony's head of PlayStation, John Kodera, said the new PlayStation was three years off. "We will use the next three years to prepare the next step," he said, "to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future."

Although PS5's price was not broached in the interview, an additional piece of the conversation was subsequently shared on Twitter. In that, Cerny described the system's cost as "appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set."

While Sony's plans are still largely unclear, Microsoft's are starting to come into focus. The company is set to have an E3 press conference this year, and head of Xbox Phil Spencer said it is going to go "as big at E3 as we've ever been." In 2018, Microsoft confirmed that a new Xbox was in development, and it is expected that we'll see this next-generation console at E3 2019. More immediately, it has been suggested that an all-digital Xbox One S will be announced soon. As the name indicates, this new console would not accept physical discs and designed around downloading and streaming.

The only reason that Sony is even mentioning 8K (which is completely ridiculous) is to cover their backsides from Google's Stadia presentation. 8K is a loooong loooong way off (PS5 Pro) but still they had to mention it to save face because of Stadia.

Be prepared to hear the same thing from Microsoft, except it will be because of Google and Sony mentioned it - so ridiculous.

@lonesamurai00: they didn't really get into much detail about 8k. They just threw it out there fornthe devs to know 8k will be supported on the console and up to the devs to use it how they please if they use it. I'm thinking 8k movies or upconverting techniques on games like how the pro uses it to get 4k.

@pcps4xb: Still Sony only mentioned 8K resolutions because Google straight up clowned them during their press event. Many people already feel as though Google will give both Sony and Microsoft some heat next gen, and Judging from this information published by Sony I think that they are worried also. Let's see how Microsoft plays their hand.

@lonesamurai00: so you have inside info that everyone else doesn't eh? I don't think Sony or their next console (ps5) care about Google stadia. What I said and pretty much what all other outlets are saying makes sense and the way it seems even Sony don't care about 8k They just said it will be supported. Alot more things more important than 8k. Sony/MS know it will probably be around towards the end of the ps5 cycle when 8k starts to really come into people's homes.

@pcps4xb: I didn't say one thing about having any inside information, but I have a brain, I can add 2 and 2 and get 4. I have been alive long enough to know how corporations think, and how they act and react. Sony is reacting to Google by talking about something that even you have said would be years and years away. Heck it's not even possible on the upcoming machine, so why talk about it. and please don't tell me that they were talking about 8K movies either because if they were in fact talking about 8K movies then they would have made it crystal clear as they always have. Fact is they are being quite vague about a lot of things, the mention of 8K is otherworldly weird, and the reason is fear of Google.

Two companies are trying to sell you a bill of goods on the topic of 8K - that's PC territory, now and later and they know it - Sony knows it. Bottom line is that Sony is simply using a lot of buzz words with this little reveal.

@lonesamurai00: just to add to your comments. There are not any 8K games and will not be any for years. I'm not talking about a 1080P size to 8 K but true 8 k in games is at least 6 to 8 years away.

@spartanx169x: True 8K assets and textures will definitely come to the PC so that's no problem. Fact is any game played at 8K resolution is something that simply can't be done, and possibly may never be done on any console period.

Hello everyone. This is y the next generation of Xbox will again loose the next generation war again. The main reason is that the PS5 In an interview with, "Cerny didn't name the console. The next-gen PlayStation is partially based on PS4 architecture, which means that it is backwards compatible. Cerny also revealed that it is not an all-digital device, AND WILL will Accept physical discs.

How can a game system be havebackwards compatible and not be able to play the hard copy of the older games. Sure it can play the older generations of games but how, bye re-buying older games that are remade too buy by paying a fee too play. Kinda like what SONY does on their PS4 systems. So say bye bye to your paid old games and get ready for another crappy new generation of the next Xbox next.

@whitewarriar75: I get it, you are poor and can only own one console. It sucks, I really do get it. But if you work really hard one day when you become an adult you may be able to afford more than one console. Also you should be thanking Microsoft for forcing Sony to be backwards compatible, because they would have never done it otherwise.

@spartanx169x: well for your information I am kind of poor. But that happens to some of us, especially ones that had a few surgeries, that made them unable too work and make enough too live the good life. But I'm not complaining. In fact I own multiple systems and a dozen of so of games for that particular system.

I was just stating some facts that I read about a certain system, which just so happens too be the PS5. And I was stating a fact about y the next Xbox Will loose. If the next Xbox makes people buy new all digital versions of game they had or have, then what's the point of having backwards compatibility.

Just so you know I have or have had a Xbox one, 360, original Xbox, 3DS XL, NES, SNES. N64, PS2 AND a PS4, Colecovision, Atari and an intellivision. And another thing I have a PS4 and a Xbox ONE and I live and play my XBOX ONE alot more.

@whitewarriar75: Maybe and maybe not, even though I feel that all digital Xbox even for this gen may have been an bad idea releasing it now. But this is not an console for next generation. I rather wait and see what MS releases first before counting them out. If MS only concentrates on hardware and not exclusives then Sony may have an good chance, but seeing MS is buying up Studios left and right one would think MS is planning ahead and hopefully changed their tactics. MS has an lot of money to throw around but I wish they stop wasting it and get real serious even if they dropped out of the console business it would not break them. I like what Sony is doing and hopefully I will love what MS is doing as well.

@whitewarriar75: MS said they will still make systems with disk drives. The "All-Digital" is a current gen console anyway. It's giving choice to people to save $50 if they only buy digital games. They also announced a disk-to-digital thing where you can trade in a hard copy for a digital code.

I don't really care about 8k gaming, I'll be happy with 1080p 60fps -4k 60fps with all the effects but maybe they are trying to future-proof the console when 8K TVs and gaming becomes the norm. Good to see consoles pushing the power and you know all PC gamers will now be claiming that they all game on a 8K rig haha

@letsgame82: Well its good you dont care, cuz at at 500-700 price point its not happening. You would need at least two HIGH end cards running in SLI, or what ever AMD has to play in 8k unless graphics are indie level trash. Hey I love me some indie games, but AAA is not happening.

Watch them launch two hardware configurations to democratize platform access at the expense of universal ray tracing capabilities. If they truly want to implement the feature in such a way that it would impact mechanical considerations, that shouldn't be an option. However, it would be hilarious if they made such a decision.

@ronthallsballs: You can now use PS Now on your phone which is essentially the same thing, minus all of the manufacturing headaches Sony has to endure to create a handheld. Not only that, but you don't need to buy a new VR for the PS5. The old one will work just fine.

Sounds pretty smart to me.

If they're going to boast about the PS5 being 8k capable, then it should have no problem running most if not all games at 4k/60fps, right?

The most expensive PCs today struggle to do that, so there's reason to be skeptical

@darkelf83: No, the power of the hardware is not a developer choice, that's definitely up to Sony. The speculation is not about whether all games -will- run at 4k60 or above, it's about whether the hardware would be capable of it.

@Spartan_418: I'll bet you could run Minecraft at 4k 60fps with current gen. What darkelf83 was saying is that developers have chosen to push more graphics and larger, more detailed environments over running at 60fps. It doesn't matter how powerful the hardware is, if developers go for visual fidelity over performance then you won't get 60fps.

@Barighm: People just don't get it. Sony never boasted on the Pro being 4k, just beautiful games. Which it has. MS on the other hand pushed and pushed "true" 4k, which it failed at.

@darkelf83: Maybe in your mind MS did, The X for me would be the best if they had not tied to its older versions and made some games that uses that power.

@darkelf83: The Xbox X didn't fail at native 4K. In 99% of game comparisons to the Pro, the X looks better, runs better, and shows more detail with less blur.

Sony still makes beautiful 1st party games, even on my launch PS4. But 3rd party games generally take better advantage of the X's hardware.

@darkelf83: Sony boasted 4K all the time when the Pro came out and then got called out when it was "faked", they even changed their commercials afterwards. And how can you say Xbox failed when it hits 4K more then the Pro yet you say the Pro did what it said. You can't say one is a failure over the other when it does it better.

The BC stuff and the SSD stuff both sounds great. I have bought all games but one digital this gen. If they just carry over to Ps5 that would be huge for me.

And if I had to pick one thing that annoys me the most over the games I've played this gen it's load times. If they can "fix" that it would be a massive win.

@Sushiglutton: The load times isn't always the hardware. It can be coded badly, like how Anthem had problems being developed on the Frostbite engine and led to crazy load times, not because of the hardware. I doubt devs will go back to old games to optimize them as well. But yes, some games will definitely load much faster.
