Final Fantasy XIV leadership ejected, PS3 version delayed

Management of every area changed as Square Enix offers "sincerest of apologies," promises changes, extends free-play period indefinitely.

When the latest Final Fantasy massively multiplayer online game came out, it met a volley of criticism from players and critics alike. Today, Square Enix apologized to players, promised a further extension of Final Fantasy XIV's free trial period, announced a complete management restructuring, and confirmed the PlayStation 3 version would miss its March 2011 ship date.

No one will be taking up arms in Eorzea on the PS3 any time soon.
No one will be taking up arms in Eorzea on the PS3 any time soon.

The most high-profile departure is producer/director Hiromichi Tanaka, who has stepped down and been replaced by Naoki Yoshida. In a statement accompanying the news, Tanaka apologized for the current state of Final Fantasy XIV, taking full responsibility for the game's shortcomings. While Tanaka is stepping down from his current roles, he will "be continuing to support the development team in other capacities."

As well as a new director, the project now has a new assistant director, lead game designer, lead combat system designer, lead programmer, and lead artist, among others. The new team will be producing game updates more regularly, according to Square Enix. There are two scheduled before the end of the year, with more details on their content to follow.

Confirming the PS3 version delay, Square Enix "humbly" asked for a player's "continued patience and understanding." The firm said the game would not hit Sony's platform until it was "confident that the game has reached the level of enjoyability and service befitting the Final Fantasy name."

Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada apologized to fans for the state of game and pledged to extend the game's free trial period "until we are able to confidently present [players] with a concrete plan outlining Final Fantasy XIV's new direction."

FFXIV will go down as one of the biggest MMORPG flops right next to APB.. But atleast Square is FINNALY admitting the games short comeings as for a while they backed the game 100% saying it had nothing wrong with it.. The game is still in closed beta stage if you ask me. I'd say Prepetuum is 100x better then FFXIV and it was developed by a 10man indy team! I'd rather support games like Prepetuum (which just launched 2 weeks ago i beleive) that were developed with care by their creators who seeked out their own investment rather then FFXIV who just threw as much money into FFXIV as they could to get it done as QUICKLY as they could without careing about core MMORPG mechanics being implemented. They even admit they were releasing the game early and then patching more content into it.. Companys will never learn that a launch for a MMORPG is EVERYTHING!

I missed the old RPG like FF6-9 and Breath of Fire 3-4, and Chrono but ever since Enix came around it been DECENT, DECENT, KINDA BAD... at least NDS is keeping the series of good games alive but wish they were for PSP... Middle Finger to ENIX

It's astounding that 9 years have passed since FFX, the last good FF.

Well it's good to hear that SE is doing something about it, I've heard all kinds of negative stuff about FF14 since it came out. I'm not gonna complain about the state of the FF franchise though - the series has provided us with at least 10 great titles and possibly several more depending on your preferences. And it would be nice to see a good alternative to WOW, to help improve the MMO game industry.

How can people bit** at this? They lay down flat and admitted their fail, promised a improvement and asked for our patience. How often do you hear that from a gaming company?

Lately they've been toning down on the FF games. it really needs to go back to how it was. FF13 was way too linear and just didn't feel like a regular FF game.

This is what happens when you get an award for a crappy so-called "game" (FF13). Arrogance and greed. Learn your lesson well, Squenix, and never forget it. It's not about the money, it's about the game (and the story of the game). If you don't have a good game, this is what happens. Relearn the FF formula, and one day, you might be forgiven. Fail to do so, and your company will go bankrupt. Mark my words.

It was only yesterday when I typed "What is with all the PS3 games getting delayed" on another story.. I wasn't looking to buy this game, but this adds another notch to the delayed games bedpost. Sort em out Square Enix *pats on back*

Good to know. Hope the department leads are still with the company. That would suck to have on your resume, when looking for a job, 'Final Fantasy XIV; lead programmer.' You'ld never find anyone to take you lol.

The "Final Fantasy name" has been muddled since FF-X.

I'm glad to see a high profile developer taking action on those responsible for producing a poor product in the name of improving quality and pleasing fans, rather than just saying "they'll buy it any way".

I was shocked when I read the email they sent. I gave up on this game, but the fact that they've actually acknowledged what so many fans have been saying says a lot. Not sure if I'll return but I'm definitely gonna keep my eye on what they're doing with this over the coming months.

reuwasst, some people like grinding. It heavily depends on the reward and what the players are going after. And the annoyances in that grinding. Like if there are loading screens from each battle, oh please shoot me now. FF7 to 9 were pretty bad. When it came to that, great games though. FF 10 wasn't as bad, but still there. FF12 no loading screens, but you may or maynot like that battle system. I personally loved 10, and 12's battle system. I really don't like active. I feel that it actually slows the game down instead of speeds it up.

Having bought this game in CE version when it came out, all I can say is that I quit after 4 days playing and won't ever go back free-play or not. What they're doing is certainly a step in the right direction, but damn, this was one woeful game and it's too late I fear for this game's chances. Arrogance was the sole reason this game got past quality control in the poor state it was in - the team and management behind it were so sure of the Square Enix name alone being enough. This will cost the firm dearly in terms of reputation going forward.

I think Square Enix should just stick with what the do best. Single player Final Fantasy's. I mean yes, FFXI was amazing but it was also unique and should have been a one time thing. In fact I think they should learn from Bethesda and do an Elder Scrolls like Final Fantasy. You can explore an expansive MMORPG world while enjoying single player goodness.

I want an MMO on the PS3, more so DC Universe, but this I would also check out. I heard the PC version was released and panned for simply not being fun due to it's unfriendly userface. A few changes here, a few tweaks there, badda bing badda boom, hit me with a fun, challenging role playing experience on my PS3 :)

this game has a lot of failures, and I mean, a LOT. Begining with the most important: Gameplay: I never seen something as boring as this, grinding is something that should never be allowed to exist, and this game is basicaly grinding. Interface: what interface? It looks like half made consoles for an alpha version game. Graphics: Final Fantasy reached the level that they have to choose, if they will make a realistic game, or an artistic one. This mix on FFIV doesn't look good, the textures looks terrible, the characters looks like clay, the rocks and the mountains doesn't fit the graphic and the game's atmosphere looks dead and feelingless, and the worst: the maps are huge, but there's nothing to catch the eye while you cross it. Jungles, deserts... It looks like they just copied and pasted the same thing thousands of times. I still have no idea of what's the story's plot.I think the only thing that I can't complain about is the Cinematics and the Sound, wich are Final Fantasy's specialty. I think this game should be completely remade because in it's actual state... It'll just keep failing and failing, shaming the FF's trademark.

Fair play SE, Final Fantasy XI was amazing, I loved roaming Vanadiel and the Valkurn Dunes. I was looking forward to this until the near universal panning, but you have a chance to make things right. Very very right indeed.

Good to see them take action, it's horrible to see how rushed FFXIV was, it needed some more time in the oven. I like this news.

Awful game but major props to them for this. I can't remember the last time a publisher held their hands up and say "Sorry, this game sucks"! Hopefully they'll change it, I really really wanted this to be good.

I just don't get why every combat gameplay vid I've seen was your avatar hitting a little critter? They really made it seem like that's all you get to fight? Obviously, they failed. I only hope they redeem themselves for the sake of the fans and people who threw down cash for it.

WOW, at least SE is taking responsability and will probabaly drastically improve this game quickly... real NPC quests etc... I'm playing the PC version and can wait for the PS3 version to come if they do it right. Playing MMOs in the living room is 100x better than on a PC anyway.

I think Wada himself is probably partly to blame for this, the game was rushed out in a clearly unfinished state, and that reeks of upper management interference to try and beat cataclysm to market. That said, I hope this means a turnaround for FF14, there was good progress in the November patch but they will need to do a lot more to overcome that disastrous launch, and outright refusing to put an auction house in even despite all the complaints was a bad sign.
