Final Fantasy XIV leadership ejected, PS3 version delayed

Management of every area changed as Square Enix offers "sincerest of apologies," promises changes, extends free-play period indefinitely.

When the latest Final Fantasy massively multiplayer online game came out, it met a volley of criticism from players and critics alike. Today, Square Enix apologized to players, promised a further extension of Final Fantasy XIV's free trial period, announced a complete management restructuring, and confirmed the PlayStation 3 version would miss its March 2011 ship date.

No one will be taking up arms in Eorzea on the PS3 any time soon.
No one will be taking up arms in Eorzea on the PS3 any time soon.

The most high-profile departure is producer/director Hiromichi Tanaka, who has stepped down and been replaced by Naoki Yoshida. In a statement accompanying the news, Tanaka apologized for the current state of Final Fantasy XIV, taking full responsibility for the game's shortcomings. While Tanaka is stepping down from his current roles, he will "be continuing to support the development team in other capacities."

As well as a new director, the project now has a new assistant director, lead game designer, lead combat system designer, lead programmer, and lead artist, among others. The new team will be producing game updates more regularly, according to Square Enix. There are two scheduled before the end of the year, with more details on their content to follow.

Confirming the PS3 version delay, Square Enix "humbly" asked for a player's "continued patience and understanding." The firm said the game would not hit Sony's platform until it was "confident that the game has reached the level of enjoyability and service befitting the Final Fantasy name."

Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada apologized to fans for the state of game and pledged to extend the game's free trial period "until we are able to confidently present [players] with a concrete plan outlining Final Fantasy XIV's new direction."

What was wrong FFXII? I didn`t see anything wrong with it in the first place. For anybody thought that FFXII was awful need to play bad games then if you haven`t be quiet. I thought this somewhat the right direction the franchise needed to take except for linearity. All Square Enix going do is take the ideas from XIII, Versus, and Agito that were good and put them into a new game.

the problem with Square is that they don't give players enough time to breathe in between the releases of every FF game.

At least they are trying to fix it. @ Orga777 : Just because you fail to understand something doesn't make it bad.

@ Nathalmighty1 This is NOT the fall of Final Fantasy!!! It was a flub up that can be FIXED since MMOs can be entirely altered via a patch. The great thing about Final Fantasy is that it can NEVER jump the shark. It's constantly changing it's characters, story, setting and gameplay, for better or worse.

When the president of Square Enix himself apologizes, you should realize that the launch version of this game is certainly an unacceptable shamble. It's going to cost Square Enix some more money at doing public relations and re-marketing the game once every kink has been ironed out in FFXIV.

@Rizion89 Where to start with how bad X is. First, lets start with the characters. Tidus is a whiny, obnoxious, entitled, brat with daddy issues. He is like a freaking teenage girl and not a character I want to route for as a main character. Wakka never shuts up and grates on my nerves. Rikku is right up there with Hope as one of the most horrible FF characters ever. Whether it is her selfish nature or the fact she does more hindering to the plot than move it forward. Seymore is a two-bit villain that tries to pull off Sephiroth and fails in ever single way imaginable. He is like a bad James Bond villain. Lulu and Kimahri do little, while pretty cool, are mostly background characters. Thank god for Auron. Yuna was also okay, but she would have made a better main character since she is a strong and was willing to sacrifice herself for the good of the world, while she was afraid, took it all in stride and was ready for death if it should happen. She was heroic. Tidus was not. I will need about ten pages to talk about the convoluted mess that is FFX's story. That whole ending is just horrible and seemed to be rushed because they ran out of time to make an actual ending. He was a dream of the Fayth? How did Sin get to dreamland to bring Tidus to Spira? Heck, I am still trying to figure out how everyone went from a frozen wasteland to the middle of the desert that was where Yuna was located and where Rikku's home was. Plot convenience is not good writing!

@Orga777 wtf was wrong with ff10? and ff8? ff10 battles were fun and the ability to control summon was cool, not to mention the monster boss creator and the dark aeons summon battles, but i guess u didnt play tht far? Also blitzball prob the best minigame in the ff series ff8 story true was a bit lame, but the gameplay mechcanics were just as sound as ff7's. FF8 also allowed you to split off from the main story far sooner than any other ff, and the card game was fun too.

They messed up big time with it but at least they are trying to fix it and have shown that the old teams mistakes arent easily forgiven. Ive never played the MMO Final Fantasy's (I dont like online games, single player does me just fine) but ive played every other numbered FF game and enjoyed them from the start so i see no reason why they cant patch this up and make it the game it was supposed to be Hope they do it quickly tho, or they will lose alot of business to WoW and other new MMO's

Does this mean we get regional servers now? I loved it 6 years ago in FFXI, but in an age where everyone now has broadband, the latency is unbearable. I don't like struggling against the game or against extreme latency that's out of my hands.

Take about a blow to the Final Fantasy series:( Oh well thank god this wasn't a solo only like the entries into the series otherwise it would have seriously shaken my faith in the series. Lets just hope that Square Enix fixes the issues and bugs in FF14 online before they come up with a new release date for the consoles.

People, people... FFXIV was rushed, most likely due to Cataclysm's imminent release. The good news is MMOs are ALWAYS changing. It isn't like they released a terrible single player game and that's that. The game is currently tolerable in small doses, but remains very broken. I log on, exp for about 30 minutes when I'm bored, and move on. It looks like we will have free gametime for the time being so what the hell? If it ever gets fixed I'll have a character with some time in it =p And remember, FFXI had a terrible main development team, then a new team came in and cleaned house. In fact, they still pump out a ridiculous amount of good content for it to this day. This game is definitely still salvageable, and I believe it will be (salvaged). Give it time, and meanwhile pretend it's in an advanced beta stage, which it pretty much is =X

The problem I have seen with FF is that after 20+ or so hours of gaming (this is XII and XIII) I really didn't care about finding out what happened at the end of the game. The characters are boring and dull. X was the last game that I actually wanted to know how it was going to end (Not saying it was on par with VIII or others, but I did enjoy it). I still haven't beat XII and I'm not sure if I will ever go back to it.

I have faith in Sqaure Enix, i know they're capable of great games, i just wish they produced them more often. but looks like now they're paying attention and since they're reputation is really on the line here, I'm sure theyll manage to turn this game around if they continue to listen to fans and apply their creative genius

Next time SE shoud listen to the beta testers who reported all the issues. All the problems been addressed. All they fixed was the mouse.....yeah good job. They deserved that this game failed on the pc, if only because they couldn't care a bit to the critics pc gamers reported. I hope the PS3 is atlease a finished game, otherwise the PS3 gamers will suffer the same the PC gamer had to endure with this terrible product.

@Gen007 You would have to play it, The reviews are full of it. Especially since the November update which fixed the majority of UI and combat lag problems. Hopefully the December Content update will be just as significant as the November UI update. The Game is completely saveable, and don't let the trolls or reviewers of Pre-Late November FF14 tell you otherwise. Hopefully they will exhibit the new changes to people who are unaware and sell the game for a discount during the holidays or something to bring in more players. Half Price Digital Sale if we are lucky.

@pkay45 FFXIII was a good gameplay it only suffers from a few small things, but some of this could be added up to them starting the 360 port of this game in the middle of its development instead of keeping the focus on the version they were already working on. I like this game although its not the best in the series it is not the worst(remember FFVIII). The lvl up system was a big improvement over the Sphere Grid(FFX) and Spirit Board(FFXII). This game has one of the toughest difficulties in the series, which is good. One of the biggest problems this had was no development of most of the villians that were killed off quickly in cutscenes.

I'm glad they are trying to fix things, but I do find it just stupid that 4 years after this console generation launches (5 maybe, losing count) we still don't have a console MMO. AoC console version got scrapped, I hope FF14 will really be completed!

@VarietyMage The award was for sales not quality. ANd FFXIII I will admit is not the best in the series, it surely is not a bad game by anymeans. It did have some flaws, but I think you should play some actual bad games and learn what a bad game is....and let us not forget that FFX in itself was just as linear as FFXIII.

Guys, FFXII was not that bad. Jeez. It was a quality game with a quality story progression. FFVIII and X are like festering mold at the bottom of old shoes with the worst stories and overall characters in the entire Final Fantasy series. As for FFXIV, I consider it a lost numeral. Just like FFXI. These problems with FFXIV shows that Square should stop with the MMORPGs and start making good console RPGs with good story and characters again. Because XIII, while it isn't horrible, is not up to par of what I expect of the Final Fantasy name. It was just mediocre. XIV is just garbage and shouldn't exist.

To bad i remember playing the first final fantasy online and that was a blast, thats what really got me into MMO's but this game was garbage. Its a shame i had high hopes for this game, seen it coming though as the rest have mentioned the last installment in the final fantasy game franchise was sub par.

Almost Every single game they've released was horrible.. The only games that barely ran out of hellfire was Star Ocean IV and Nier (barely)... Other than that, all there PS3/360 games have been hell... Front Mission Evolved sold to bad that my job is now selling it for 19.99.... I was going to by it until my co worker complained that it's that bad and not worth crap because you have to literally spend money $$ off of the online store to buy extra parts.. and that Armored core owns it... smh.... We need a Squaresoft back in this gen....

@akuya32 I'm with you, really wish there was another Suikoden game on its way, I loved Suikoden V. As for Final Fantasy, I quite enjoyed 13 but I admit it was massively flawed- way too linear and made you play for 20 hours + to get to the point where it was any good. I think SE ought to focus on getting their console franchise right and not go veering off into MMORPG territory.

@Afterthought_bt I, along with a LOT of other people.. disagree completely with you. XIII was a great game, the story and the gameplay was fine. If this game wasnt a Final Fantasy game and was just some random JRPG it would get so much more praise from players, nobody can actually prove this not even me but I know its true. You expect waaay too much from this developer, well its not that you expect too much.. its just that your not ready to let new gameplay mechanics and a linear world invade your precious Final Fantasy.

I know this is way off topic, but where is a new Suikoden? I am a die hard FF fan and I enjoyed XI. In addition I hope they make the changes needed to make the game good or even just decent. I think I will hold off a bit before I spend my time or money in this one.

If they can launch XIV on the PS3 with a decent score, say an 8+, it could very well save the game. They have a lot of work to do however.

VarietyMage is spot on that this has been caused by the award for FFXIII. FFXIII was in no shape or form a good game. A beautiful game, yes, but the gameplay and story were awful - by the time I thought the story had started, it had actually virtually finished, which is unheard of in FF games, they always have long rewarding stories. To get an award for it makes them set their standards far lower than they should be. Hopefully these shockwaves continue into the single player games, because I love the FF series so much, it determines which console I buy. As an aside, I fear the same thing will happen with another of my favourite games series, Civilization, if V gets an award - it being another a game which doesn't live up to the standards of its predecessors.

@Darkaned How can we be pissed? Because the first few months of launch Square Enix said the game was in decent shape when clearly it still needed some beta testing AND CONTENT! It's ridicilus that a company can release a product as unfinished as FFXIV and then get away with it with some simple apology; they haven't even done anything content/quest wise.. And no auction house? LOL You think its ok that they released FFXIV unfinished just so that they could get some sales in before Cataclysm, Rift, SWTOR, or GW2 launched? Square knew if they waited any longer to release FFXIV then they'd be competeing with those other games so they released the game to us in the shape it is in now.. I wouldn't applaud them what so ever.. They screwed us.

Its good that theyve admitted how poor this outing is. But I think a better option would be to steer clear of MMO gaming in regards to final fantasy. They really need to put their talent into something else. Someone here said FFX was the last good Final Fantasy and I'm inclined to agree. 12 was boring for me and 13 was too short and linear. SE would do better in trying to make them as good as they used to be, or concentrate on another title such as KH3....or dare i say it.....FF7 remake (dont hurt me)
