Final Fantasy 15's Day One Update Detailed

Square Enix is adding new features and fixing bugs with the day one patch.

As promised, Square Enix today shared the details of Final Fantasy XV's day one update. The Crown update, as it's called, adds new cutscenes from the Kingsglaive movie and Omen trailer so as to "make the story and timeline of events" easier to follow and understand for new players.

The update also adds more recipes for cooking, as well as a gallery feature that tracks "culinary discoveries." Additionally, the patch introduces support to share in-game pictures to Facebook and Twitter, while it also adds an ability tree to the Wait Mode feature, which lets players slow down time. Lastly, the patch adds a "Beast Whistle," which can be used to beckon monsters to battle.

"The Crown Update is the result of some additional time for development since mastering the full game," a Square Enix spokesperson told Eurogamer. "[It] provides a variety of updates, minor bug fixes and new features to greatly enhance the overall story and gameplay experience."

The patch will be out on November 29 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. There is no word on how large the file size is; but someone on Twitter says it's around 7.2 GB.

In other news about Final Fantasy XV, Square Enix today put out an extended version of the game's 101 trailer, which provides an in-depth overview of what the game is all about.

Final Fantasy XV Day One Patch Notes:

  • New event scenes and scenes from Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15 and the Omen trailer have also been added to the game to make the story and timeline of events within the Final Fantasy 15 universe even easier to follow for newcomers
  • For those who enjoy collecting items, the upgrade will also add a wider variety or recipes and fish with the addition of a gallery to keep track of culinary discoveries
  • Implementation of social media support, allowing the photos Prompto takes along your journey to be uploaded to Facebook and Twitter.
  • Improvements to the camera with new options to better assist and track the action in tight spaces and to improve visibility during battles
  • The addition of an ability tree for the Wait Mode function improves the strategic element of this feature
  • Players can obtain the "Beast Whistle" which can be used to call monsters to battle

Too bad the patch isn't broken down into mandatory (like bug fixes) and optional (like social media support). I could save alot of data by not wasting time downloading facebook and twitter into a game. What a waste of data to incorporate them into the game.

@lion2447: A lot of that data is going to be the pre-rendered cut scenes.

They should've just packaged the movie in with game.

Now news for the PS4 Pro Patch please.

I really hope there is some anti-aliasing going on. But I am happy about the resolution bump, and 60fps.

@toan8781: Actually I am quite correct.

As of now it is only 30fps. As of release of the patch it will be 60fps.

@Lach0121: I think people get confused because the dev said they are hoping to have a patch out for pro running at 60 fps in december. It has been testing at 40-50 at the moment but the first patch we receive will only be 30 fps.

Tried the PS4 Demo and not impressed. Turned jaded against the little kid characters they like to use. I'll stay with Witcher 3.

@sakaixx: yep and it's all optional stuff to enhance the already polished experience. Not like it's necessary. Every modern and big exploration game adds patches that are several GB.

@nick_e: its not optional.. lol i read some where that the patch fixes the bugs in game to so my that means that if they dont fix a story quest thats broken and people who bought it but dont have internet cant finish the game because of they dont have internet to update the patch lol but year a 7gb+ patch for day one was garbage as **** like wtf? oh we want to make the day 1 patch smaller.. then its 7gb which is fucking ridiclous for a day 1 patch.. i dont ever remember the last game i played that had a day one patch taht big

@zackgrutza: actually it is optional. The game has been played start to finish without the patch. It's only fixing small bugs that aren't critical to the game like any bugs u find in any big game. Most of the patch is dedicated to adding new features that enhance the experience.. Much like patches for Witcher 3 or any other big and open game. They weren't going to delay the game again to add non essential features when the game is fine how it is without the patch

@sakaixx: right, It's not wrong. But what's the point when it's normal with today's games? Games of this complexity are going to need large file sizes to add substantial additional features. I'm not looking forward to downloading 7.2gb just like everyone else probably isn't but I am looking forward to having the extra stuff it adds to the game. Not like they're charging for it or something.

@nick_e: I'm guessing the patch is so big because it is using scenes from Omen and Kingsglaive. Like one user above said, wish patches allowed you to choose what you wanted to download.

@fend_oblivion: possibly. They're just movie scenes though so shouldn't be too big. Whole movies are only a few GB. But ya, that'd be cool if it was itemized and we could individually choose what items to download

@jinzo9988: Why wasn't it already there on the disc though ? That is the bigger question. They all seem to love wasting people's disc drive space with massive updates.

@deviltaz35: did u just read over the part of the article where they did this stuff after it was already too late to add onto the disc? This is additional stuff they worked on afterwards.

@nick_e: The point is they have had 8 years doesn't anyone else see that? It is all too convenient now to just add stuff in later. Not all of us have super fast internet so it just gets really annoying beyond it just being extra hard drive space that is needed. When a game is released they show how much space is needed on the drive for install but now it is just simply not the case .

@deviltaz35: 8 years? They just started the game over from scratch in mid 2012. That's a normal development length for this kind of game. And the extra stuff they are adding are things you wouldn't decide to put in until the very end of development anyway whether they had 3 years or 8

@nick_e: Fair enough it's just that every single new release has a massive update now. Nothing worse than putting a disc in and it says 8.5 gb update required especially if you have ADSL2. To put it in perspective 10GB is about 3-4 hrs for me to download and ADSL2 is the only offering in my town currently.

@deviltaz35: understandable. My internet is the same way. I upgraded to the ps4 pro and when I reinstalled Witcher 3 I had to download 23gb of patches before it was up to date again after the base game itself is 30gb or so

@deviltaz35: the reason is simple. They wanted to use the two month delay to put these improvements on the disc. But they didn't have enought time to do all of it before square went like "dude, this shit has to go gold now couse distribution worldwide is a complicated process that requires time, so give us something that works now" and they did. But couse the people there are good employees, they finished all the stuff they needed to finish, and even thought it was too late to modify anything on the disc, a patch would do the trick (basically that's how most day one patches work)

@ort9404: lol they 8 years to ensure things work well sorry it doesn't wash anymore. We need to stop making excuses for crap game design. I can understand PS pro implementation being delayed but that is it.

People are just getting far too lenient in accepting this practice which is why it is only going to get worse.

Be careful or we will just end up with everything being episodic content we need to download every 3 months or so.

@brazzo09: It seems that they couldnt avoid it so they said fck it and added extra features.

Apparently you can play the game without the patch since it doesnt contain crucial/essential data.

@JEF8484: People with leaked copies in Peru, without day 1 patch, praised the game overall, but some said that it would have been nice to get some extra cutscenes that show the situations going on in the world away from Noctis and his friends, just to get more context. I guess the patch adresses that complaint before it even becomes a thing. In any case it's not necessary, just helpful, like all the other features in this patch.

@JEF8484: I hear ya I can't say my internet sucks by any means but it also depends on the time of day I try to download something. If I get up early it goes quick, If I try to download in the afternoon it slows to a damn crawl. I know it sounds weird that's just how it works in my house though lol.

I thought the delay was to pack as much content onto the disk for people without solid internet connections.

7gb+ is pretty large investment for my monthly satellite internet limit.

@legendaryweapon: The delay was so that the game could run from start to finish without any patches. The Crown Patch is not mandatory. It is for minor fixes to the camera, some new features and a couple of scenes from a movie and a trailer. The patch is probably 4-5 GB in size alone because of all those 1080p scenes from Kingsglaive and Omen.
