Early 2024's Game Launches Are Coming Into Focus

It looks like a great year ahead for fans of real-time strategy, roguelite driving, and action-packed homages to Starship Troopers.

The year is almost over, leaving behind an incredible impression with the number of high-quality releases and a somber reminder of how fragile the games industry can be with all of the layoffs that occurred. Going into 2024, the year ahead is shaping up nicely thanks to the recent confirmation of release dates for upcoming games. Previously, the 2024 release schedule was looking bare, but with events like the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted, we've got a clearer look at what to expect next year.

One of the big highlights is Homeworld 3 from Vancouver-based developer Blackbird. After a lengthy delay that pushed it out of 2023, you can expect the next chapter in this sci-fi real-time strategy series to arrive on March 8. Helldivers 2 is another interesting game on the horizon, as it mixes a heavy Starship Troopers influence with co-op third-person shooter action. Do you want to know more (about the release date)? Then you'll be pleased to know that you can take on alien hordes on February 28.

Keeping things terrestrial, Pacific Drive looks like a fascinating blend of driving, roguelite elements, and a spooky atmosphere. Developer Ironwood Studios decided to shift to a 2024 gear as the game entered its final stretch of development, and it now has a February 22 release date. Other highly anticipated games include hellish turn-based strategy game Solium Infernum (February 14), paramedic simulator Ambulance Life (September 2024), and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 (Fall 2024).

For a broader overview, a number of other games have a nebulous 2024 release date. Cartoon-flavored first-person shooter Wild Bastards, stop-motion adventure Harold Halibut, and global cooling RTS Frostpunk 2 have all confirmed that they'll be out at an unspecified point in 2024. There have been a few delays mixed into the schedule as well, with Destiny 2: The Final Shape moving from February to June and Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance now scheduled for a February 21 release.
