E3 is just what the industry needs - Analyst

EEDAR's Jesse Divnich predicts Sony to chase casuals to no avail, a major 360 game exclusive to go download-only, and new Mario and Zelda games from Nintendo.

With the Electronic Entertainment Expo less than three weeks away, the already-impressive flow of rumors and leaks is likely to pick up. So before the waters get too muddied, GameSpot sought out a handful of industry analysts to get their takes on what will happen and what Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo should be focusing on heading into the big show.

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich
EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich

Kicking things off was Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich, who painted a cheery picture of the show as a whole, but expressed concerns about Sony chasing a phantom audience and gamers "evolving" beyond Nintendo.

GameSpot: E3 often gives us a good idea of what trends publishers are going to be chasing in the coming year. Past years have been dominated by open-world titles, extreme sports games, and more recently, rhythm games and casual games. Are there any genres you expect to see out in force at this year's show?

Jesse Divnich: I don't foresee there being any one genre or console dominating the show floor this year. It is clear that based on the current release schedule, the back half of 2009 and especially the holiday season will be packed more so than ever before. Given the AAA-packed schedule in the back half of 2009, you can bet every publisher will be trying to get an early bump in consumer awareness and preorders by showing off their biggest AAA titles scheduled for this year.

GS: What's the most important theme for Microsoft to focus on for the show? What does it need to leave E3 attendees thinking?

JD: The Microsoft Xbox 360 has such a dominating share of the core gaming market that they can begin to show the industry how they plan to take gaming to the next level through their online services. Further, OnLive and its cloud technology is certainly a threat, and it is imperative for Microsoft to illustrate the differentiating features of their online service. I would not be surprised if Microsoft announced a major AA title to be distributed exclusively through Xbox Live later this year (note that I do not mean AAA, but that will not be far behind).

In terms of price cuts, I do not expect Microsoft to drop their price on the Xbox 360--units sales are trending well ahead of last year. The ball is certainly in Sony's court, and Microsoft will not lead the way with any price cut unless a potential PS3 price cut hinders their current sales trends.

GS: How about for Sony?

JD: Sony is certainly on the upper end of the consumer-technology matrix, and their demographic base is narrow. Those who own a PS3 are either loyal Sony fans or are considered technology innovators--those that must own the latest and greatest technologies.

Sony still has a lot of work to do to capture the core video game market. I expect Sony to tackle both spectrums of the market by displaying some of the biggest AAA core titles that are to come in the next two years (God of War III, MAG, Final Fantasy, and so on), as well as present new casual games and technology.

I believe any attempt by Sony to try to appeal to the casual/mainstream markets at this point in the race to be valueless. They have priced themselves out of that market, and until the PS3 gets in the $200-$250 range, the casual, mainstream, and family markets will have no interest. The idea of the one-size-fits-all console has been dead and buried--the demographics of the video game industry are much too diverse, and attempting to target "everyone" will likely cause brand confusion and consumer alienation.

Sony must continue to try to position itself as the No. 2 console in the market by showing its superiority over Microsoft and the Xbox 360. To attack the core market, Sony must add more value to their PlayStation Network, introduce more AAA exclusive titles, and make available better downloadable content, all of which I expect Sony to display this year at E3.

I do not expect any PS3 price-cut announcement at E3. Sony's pricing strategy on the PS3 is too reliant on manufacturing costs. But that being said, I expect a PS3 price cut within the next four months--no doubt. Any E3 PS3 price cut would purely be coincidental timing.

GS: And Nintendo?

JD: Nintendo is such an odd case. They disappointed the E3 crowd last year by showing off what has been the pillar of their success: creating fun and entertaining products. Nintendo is not known for creating complex or in-depth products, yet the gaming sector continues to fault Nintendo for the lack of core titles on the Wii and DS. As an industry, we must begin to accept that most of us core gamers have evolved beyond what Nintendo can offer. It is wrong to assume that a product or company will evolve with us over time ("us" being the core gaming market).

We do not spam the Tonka forums because their new lineup of construction toy trucks lack 22" chrome spinners and a revolving roof bazooka. Why? Because most adults have come to accept that Tonka toys are for kids and no Tonka product could ever appeal to the adult market.

This is no different from Nintendo, except the core market continues to hold on to the ounce of hope that Nintendo will somehow launch a title that could compete on the same levels of Final Fantasy or Call of Duty. What the core of our industry must begin to accept is that we have two different types of appetites when it comes to gaming. One is a hunger for complexity, involvedness, online multiplayer, and depth. The other is the sense of enjoyment from playing an entertaining title.

Nintendo can only quench one of those needs, and expecting them to step outside their comfort zone to compete on the same levels as a Halo or Call of Duty is simply ridiculous. The market wanted more quality mature titles on the Wii and DS, and they got MadWorld and GTA: Chinatown Wars; their sales results speak for themselves.

That being said, E3 is a core-targeted event, and Nintendo must come to stage with a showing of titles that will satisfy our expectations. I expect Nintendo to show off a long list of both first- and third-party titles that are more appealing to the E3 audience. In terms of first-party, Nintendo will likely announce a new Mario title as well as a new Zelda game, which both will not likely hit retail shelves until 2010. For third-party, it will likely consist of games that plan to take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus.

What I hope occurs at the Nintendo event? I hope Reggie shows up onstage wearing a chef's hat to demonstrate a new Wii cooking game and whips up a badass lasagna with the Wii Remote. Because quite honestly, it does not matter what Nintendo shows off, we will buy it. Let's face it, whether you are a hardcore Halo fan, play endless hours of Killzone 2, or you entrench yourself in the house for an entire weekend of World of Warcraft, you know you are a sucker for anything Nintendo releases. We all are, and that's why we love them.

GS: Do you think the ESA has finally found the right format for the show to please its members, attendees and exhibitors?

JD: The somber memories of E3 2008 are long gone, and I could not be happier with the ESA and its members. E3 is what the industry needs to be taken seriously. Every other major sector has a big event every year: Cannes Film Festival, Consumer Electronics Show, International Auto Show, and so on. It is only right that video games get their moment in the spotlight.

With the event a short term away, the format, attendance, and exhibitors look to be in balance with what the industry is expecting. I do not see any downside to E3, this year and even though I am expecting packed floors, long lines, and a slew of useless shwag, I cannot help but feel overjoyed that E3 is finally back.

Nintendo does seem like a lost cause. Mario games are filled with issues like how the only thing the lives system really does is take you back to the start screen so you'll have to go through all that jazz to get back to the level you were on. Zelda titles are all identical at the basic level with little to no story depth or continuity, but with a bit of potential for reevaluation. Pokemon is a big menu-fest and all its sequels are copy-pasted-fests since it first came out. That reminds me, every single Nintendo series (Warioware/Smash/Pikmin/Animal Crossing/etc.) premiers with a top-notch concept and then takes the same game and re-releases it with minor gameplay and control alterations. Gamecube-era iterations are the best of each series, but those titles have long worn out and left us awaiting the next big release only to receive Everything 1.000002. Holding out for fresh ideas from Nintendo will get you not only bit in the ass, but also leave a flesh wound that separates your legs from your upper body and infect your wounds with flesh-eating bacteria. My all-time gaming hero is SUDA51, but it's clearly not enough. The Wii and DS can use more Yellow Submarine-inspired titles because I'm pretty sure a chunk of the weirdo market plays Nintendo (refer to what would happen if you told your teacher/boss a Mario storyline and replaced Mario with yourself.)

wii wasnt a long lasting console to compete with the other third gen systems. sure it has brawl and a couple of other innovative ideas but its the same thing over again. there have been a hell of alot of mario karts and tennis on the wii is the same thing over again no matter if its pga or wii sports. its all up to microsoft and sony to carry us on

@GCwasthebestsys Nintendo has put out some good games, but not recently, Galaxy and Smash Bros. came out over a year ago and nothing very good since. By the way how does the wii dominate in anything but unit sales, and how did gamecube dominate at anything. The wii isn't up to date and Xbox 360 rules, and PS3 just needs a price drop and a few more good games.

Who cares about unit sales, MICROSOFT HAS WON THE CONSOLE WAR, Nintendo needs to put out an up to date console for the real gamers, all the casual "gamers" will be looking for wii games for the next 20 years, they wont even know a new console is out.

agree beyond words with the Nintendo thingy, no saying I do not like N or that I do not own a Wii. Because I do. But I never expect a "M" game (used this term for lack of abetter one now). I have a wii for zelda, the old-school and the few games out of the box that they can offer... Now when they announce FF4 was pretty nice.. I do admit that the gameplay in Fatal Frame if done right would be great on the WIi, and of course I was diying for a sequel. Then again my excitement die quite fast when they decide to just release it in JP... I wish the game would have being a PS3 game... no a wii exclusive,,, About E3.. I`m expecting quite alot this year... Including a LOT by Konami.... *coughcastlevaniaforps3/360cough* :P

I'm a hardcore gamer and this guy is right about the wii. they focus on casual gamers or people like me who play games and ignore my wife will doing so... so my wife tells me to buy the wii so she can play too... they're smart because even those who could care less about the wii (hardcore gamers) will still buy it to play games w/ their wife and kid(s). I'm sure I'll have one if this crippled economy ever turns around! eff the Federal Reserve!

did he say we willl all buy nintendo because we are a sucker for anything they release? er sorry that was in like 1998 or something. i sold my ds, refused to get a wii because there are simply no games other than zelda and mario. dont get me wrong i love me some ganon stabing and goomba flattening...er actually i used to. i know a ton of people in my everyday life who own those but they collect dust for the same reasons. we got tired of the rehashes and dated everything. i had some of my best times way back when on a nintendo system but really they have nothing to offer the hardcore gamer anymore. but good luck with the casual market if that is what you needed to do to survive.

Wow, this is the first analyst I've seen with a real indepth understanding of the game industry. I'm sure the analogy comparing nintendo to a tonka truck will invite some flame wars, but he has a point. Note that he's not saying nintendo is doing badly, just that the hardcore gamer isn't their target audience. In any event, here's hoping for some good announcements for all 3 consoles this year.

I don't think I can stomach more mario and zelda. I mean, come on, I've been playing those since I was a little kid. It's basically just collecting shiny coins, saving a princess, and stomping on some turtles and goomba's along the way. Even Seth Macfarlane seems to be getting tired of it all as well.

I agree with his ideas of Nintendo. I have evolved past them this generation. He also pointed out stuff Sony should do to get to the next level, but he really didn't say anythign about what MS should do... I guess he's not sure what they need or are up to...

This guy is wrong on all counts, Nintendo doesn't appeal too the vast majority of gamers, Sony has nothing really, and MS has real motion control, some unannounced exclusives (like every year), and I'm sure something else.

Well i might stop supporting micrsoft if they start distributing download only titles, if im paying anywhere from 30-70 dollars for a game i better dam well at least get a plastic disc that i can then resell. Honestly even if you are not a collector most people want a physical copy because if they dont collect they plan to resell.

I can pretty much say I don't agree with anything that he said. I don't care about Nintendo until it releases more mature games. Microsoft i could care less also, and PS3 will never drop the price down to $200-$250. That's just crazy talk.

Oh Jesse, M$ is already releasing a AA title download only. It's called 1 vs. 100. To be honest, I still think Sony has time before they really need to be concerned. The PS3 is going to have much longer legs than the 360. A price drop would be nice though, I might be able to convince my fiancee we need one then.

I actually liked how he presented his views on Ninty though the last part about all of us liking their stuff threw me. In thinking about it, I can almost see him realizing that he'd been pretty hard on them so he decided to end that segment with something positive. :)

Unless they plain to unveil a new Mario, smash, Zelda, or super awesome Kirby game then its pretty much going to be a dull show for Nintendo again with highly disappointed fans. Maybe saga should let Nintendo make a new sonic game.

I hate how analysts are almost always so full of pompous, self-righteous bullsh*t. Everything about Microsoft should be obvious. Regarding Sony, I know first hand that there are plenty of normal families out there with a PS3 who don't own one because they are Sony fans, but rather think it's the most well-rounded console for their tastes. This guy doesn't seem to have a grasp on how much gamer demographics have changed within the last decade. It's not like anyone who hopes to own a console has to rely on how many pop cans they can round up or how much allowance money they get in the next few weeks. Anyone with half a brain will be able to do some basic research to see what each console offers, what you're getting for the price, and then choose accordingly. If a person really can't afford a console because it's a couple hundred extra dollars than a competitor's, then gaming is probably too expensive for them in general. What's insane is that a great portion of people who think they're saving money picking a cheaper console usually end up buying peripherals and services that end up rendering a very flawed logic. As for Nintendo, no, not everyone wants to see what Nintendo has in store. Many people (such as the new gaming demographic I mentioned earlier) are perfectly happy playing Halo/Killzone/WoW, and don't give a damn what Nintendo shows because they've grown up with Nintendo, and also grew out of their tired franchises. One thing that's agreeable though is the fact that E3 will be big once again, which it should be.

I quite enjoyed the interview and was pretty much agreeing with everything he said, up until the everyone-is-a-sucker-for-Nintendo's-games part. Quite a few comments here have already stated otherwise, and I'd add myself to that list. Quite simply, no. The reason so many of their titles are always in the top selling games list is because they have a really high adoption ratio with the Wii itself, which as everyone knows, has sold to just about every family and casual gamer on the market. These are the "suckers" who bought "games" like Wii Fit (wonder what they're doing with the balance board now?) and Wii Music, and lazy GC re-hashes like Animal Crossing and Mario Tennis. I buy a lot of games every year, but after Mario Kart Wii and SSBB at the start of 2008, the only games I've gotten for the Wii till now are No More Heroes, HotD Overkill, Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Madworld. None of which are from Nintendo, and in that time I've even picked up more new games for the PS2. I'm pretty sure I'm far from the only "core" gamer who hasn't bought a Nintendo Wii game for a year, so I hardly think this group can be considered "suckers" for Nintendo's crap.

Oddly, enough my 360 is sitting on top of it. :) He has some high hopes for Sony, too, but I think I'm going to agree with him on that one.

Hyper trunkx I think he was implying that nobody ever picks up a game like a Mario Title and other simple but fun titles. I myself am not a fan of nintendo like that but I do feel that if i had those games and a wii that I would be able to enjoy it at the very least. Where as a lot of games for both ps3 and 360 are either liked a lot or generally forgotten. I can't say there is any title with the Wii that I just cant stand. Wii is good when you got some females over and some friends. its always fun to be interactive. rather than playing halo when the girls are around. I dont think any1 is an anti nintendo fan. Thats just my opinion, but i understand why you felt that way.

even though i respect nintendo they still havent made a racer besides mk that appeals to me like gt4 or forza 2 and a game like gta and saints row on wii. the nintendo handhelds have gtas but 3 of the 4 are bad but china town wars is actually better than gta sa but the sales are low because of graphics. the ds is where core gamers should look. even though you see girly games 70% are actually guy games including fps rpg and racing

tbh, concidering what this man said regarding...makes me take this with grain of salt yes we all know nintendo is in a tricky situation yes we all know M$ is going to beef up their online service, but OnLive is only part of the reason - the free PSN is catching up remarkably fast and its scary for them sony - umm we dont know wtf they plan on doing because they have so many things they can tackle in 1 show. my main beef is that "they cant target casual gamers" umm rly? sry but ur not very good analyst if think their plans so far arent working

"Nintendo for the lack of core titles on the Wii and DS" Ok the Wii lacks core titles but the DS...ummm no, there are too many good games for that system
