E3 is just what the industry needs - Analyst

EEDAR's Jesse Divnich predicts Sony to chase casuals to no avail, a major 360 game exclusive to go download-only, and new Mario and Zelda games from Nintendo.

With the Electronic Entertainment Expo less than three weeks away, the already-impressive flow of rumors and leaks is likely to pick up. So before the waters get too muddied, GameSpot sought out a handful of industry analysts to get their takes on what will happen and what Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo should be focusing on heading into the big show.

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich
EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich

Kicking things off was Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich, who painted a cheery picture of the show as a whole, but expressed concerns about Sony chasing a phantom audience and gamers "evolving" beyond Nintendo.

GameSpot: E3 often gives us a good idea of what trends publishers are going to be chasing in the coming year. Past years have been dominated by open-world titles, extreme sports games, and more recently, rhythm games and casual games. Are there any genres you expect to see out in force at this year's show?

Jesse Divnich: I don't foresee there being any one genre or console dominating the show floor this year. It is clear that based on the current release schedule, the back half of 2009 and especially the holiday season will be packed more so than ever before. Given the AAA-packed schedule in the back half of 2009, you can bet every publisher will be trying to get an early bump in consumer awareness and preorders by showing off their biggest AAA titles scheduled for this year.

GS: What's the most important theme for Microsoft to focus on for the show? What does it need to leave E3 attendees thinking?

JD: The Microsoft Xbox 360 has such a dominating share of the core gaming market that they can begin to show the industry how they plan to take gaming to the next level through their online services. Further, OnLive and its cloud technology is certainly a threat, and it is imperative for Microsoft to illustrate the differentiating features of their online service. I would not be surprised if Microsoft announced a major AA title to be distributed exclusively through Xbox Live later this year (note that I do not mean AAA, but that will not be far behind).

In terms of price cuts, I do not expect Microsoft to drop their price on the Xbox 360--units sales are trending well ahead of last year. The ball is certainly in Sony's court, and Microsoft will not lead the way with any price cut unless a potential PS3 price cut hinders their current sales trends.

GS: How about for Sony?

JD: Sony is certainly on the upper end of the consumer-technology matrix, and their demographic base is narrow. Those who own a PS3 are either loyal Sony fans or are considered technology innovators--those that must own the latest and greatest technologies.

Sony still has a lot of work to do to capture the core video game market. I expect Sony to tackle both spectrums of the market by displaying some of the biggest AAA core titles that are to come in the next two years (God of War III, MAG, Final Fantasy, and so on), as well as present new casual games and technology.

I believe any attempt by Sony to try to appeal to the casual/mainstream markets at this point in the race to be valueless. They have priced themselves out of that market, and until the PS3 gets in the $200-$250 range, the casual, mainstream, and family markets will have no interest. The idea of the one-size-fits-all console has been dead and buried--the demographics of the video game industry are much too diverse, and attempting to target "everyone" will likely cause brand confusion and consumer alienation.

Sony must continue to try to position itself as the No. 2 console in the market by showing its superiority over Microsoft and the Xbox 360. To attack the core market, Sony must add more value to their PlayStation Network, introduce more AAA exclusive titles, and make available better downloadable content, all of which I expect Sony to display this year at E3.

I do not expect any PS3 price-cut announcement at E3. Sony's pricing strategy on the PS3 is too reliant on manufacturing costs. But that being said, I expect a PS3 price cut within the next four months--no doubt. Any E3 PS3 price cut would purely be coincidental timing.

GS: And Nintendo?

JD: Nintendo is such an odd case. They disappointed the E3 crowd last year by showing off what has been the pillar of their success: creating fun and entertaining products. Nintendo is not known for creating complex or in-depth products, yet the gaming sector continues to fault Nintendo for the lack of core titles on the Wii and DS. As an industry, we must begin to accept that most of us core gamers have evolved beyond what Nintendo can offer. It is wrong to assume that a product or company will evolve with us over time ("us" being the core gaming market).

We do not spam the Tonka forums because their new lineup of construction toy trucks lack 22" chrome spinners and a revolving roof bazooka. Why? Because most adults have come to accept that Tonka toys are for kids and no Tonka product could ever appeal to the adult market.

This is no different from Nintendo, except the core market continues to hold on to the ounce of hope that Nintendo will somehow launch a title that could compete on the same levels of Final Fantasy or Call of Duty. What the core of our industry must begin to accept is that we have two different types of appetites when it comes to gaming. One is a hunger for complexity, involvedness, online multiplayer, and depth. The other is the sense of enjoyment from playing an entertaining title.

Nintendo can only quench one of those needs, and expecting them to step outside their comfort zone to compete on the same levels as a Halo or Call of Duty is simply ridiculous. The market wanted more quality mature titles on the Wii and DS, and they got MadWorld and GTA: Chinatown Wars; their sales results speak for themselves.

That being said, E3 is a core-targeted event, and Nintendo must come to stage with a showing of titles that will satisfy our expectations. I expect Nintendo to show off a long list of both first- and third-party titles that are more appealing to the E3 audience. In terms of first-party, Nintendo will likely announce a new Mario title as well as a new Zelda game, which both will not likely hit retail shelves until 2010. For third-party, it will likely consist of games that plan to take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus.

What I hope occurs at the Nintendo event? I hope Reggie shows up onstage wearing a chef's hat to demonstrate a new Wii cooking game and whips up a badass lasagna with the Wii Remote. Because quite honestly, it does not matter what Nintendo shows off, we will buy it. Let's face it, whether you are a hardcore Halo fan, play endless hours of Killzone 2, or you entrench yourself in the house for an entire weekend of World of Warcraft, you know you are a sucker for anything Nintendo releases. We all are, and that's why we love them.

GS: Do you think the ESA has finally found the right format for the show to please its members, attendees and exhibitors?

JD: The somber memories of E3 2008 are long gone, and I could not be happier with the ESA and its members. E3 is what the industry needs to be taken seriously. Every other major sector has a big event every year: Cannes Film Festival, Consumer Electronics Show, International Auto Show, and so on. It is only right that video games get their moment in the spotlight.

With the event a short term away, the format, attendance, and exhibitors look to be in balance with what the industry is expecting. I do not see any downside to E3, this year and even though I am expecting packed floors, long lines, and a slew of useless shwag, I cannot help but feel overjoyed that E3 is finally back.

While what JD is saying isn't groundbreaking, it makes sense and sounds logical.

Glokwerk, i agree the ps3 is better value for money overall for what you get, but i wish people would stop playing these price games to make them seem closer in cost. you dont *have* to buy the official wifi adapter for the 360, there are many cheaper alternative wi-fi solutions with instructions online or you can connect it to your router with ethernet cable (that's how mine is connected, but only cause my 360, ps3, pc and router are all in my bedroom). so for consoles online, your 360 price range should start at $249.98, a difference of about $150, not $50.

These "Nintendo sucks" arguments are really getting old. It's literally been years now since all three home consoles came out, and your comments are beyond ringing hollow. We get it. You think the Wii sucks. Many of you have only said it umpteen hundred times throughout this Web site alone. I was hoping after reading this guy's theory on Nintendo as opposed to the other console makers (one of the more informative theories you'll find on the Net) you'd let it go, at least a little. But I guess I was wrong when it comes to all you hard-nosed fanboys out there. And about so many people complaining about the lack of good, quality games on the Wii - why when you lobby for your console, whether it be the 360 or PS3, you only mention the same four or five games over and over again? Sounds a bit hypocritical to me. Truth is, all three consoles have their share of deficiencies. The Wii's graphics aren't up-to-par with the 360 or PS3; the 360's severe hardware deficiencies; the PS3's up-front cost. I'm not going into the whole end-cost for the 360 vs. the PS3 because not everyone has use of WiFi and such. But we shouldn't be blind to our own console's deficiencies. There are literally hundreds of games for all three, and I'll bet 90 percent on each one aren't worth buying. Also, Nintendo has never been on the cutting edge of technology with its consoles, with the exception of the touch screen on the DS and motion controls on the Wii. The NES was much more popular than the technologically better Sega Master System because third-party developers were handcuffed to NIntendo. The Super NES, which was late to the 16-bit party, was a success because of all those loyal NES users. The N64 was beat by the original PlayStation because of its limited cartridge-based format, and by time the expansion pack rolled around it was too late to catch up. The GameCube and original XBox were both spanked by the PS2 because the PS2 had such a large library, played DVDs and was backwards-compatible for all those PS One games. Keep in mind I've owned consoles by Nintendo, Sega, NEC, Atari and Sony over the years, so I'm not writing from one side of the argument. Instead of arguing all the time about what console is better, we should all come together to appreciate gaming as a whole. I wish developers would come up with a way to make cross-platform games that play multiplayer online over multiple platforms together at the same time. It would be fun for Wii, PS3 and 360 owners to be able to fight each other!

We'll see what happens at this years E3. I don't usually listen to analyst because 50% of the time they are wrong. They are just making wild guesses for the most part. Hopefully this years E3 will live up to all the hype. I wish I could have gone this year, but do to $$$$ and RL situations, I had to pass.

PS3 rules. It's the best piece of hardware ever and worth every penny. We don't pay to play online and that means money in our pockets that Xbox people just don't have. In the end, PS3 is cheaper. Oh, and Blu Ray is da bomb.

I believe ps3 needs a serious price cut, i myself get 15 bucks hour on my job and i still wont spend 400 dollars on that system just cause it has blu-ray, ITS NOT A BIG DEAL ANYMORE, a blue ray reader for desktop is around 80 bucks from sony. just 50 bucks difference of what the dvd reader of the 360(30 bucks). if they want to be at the top of their game, its time to realease new exclusives and 50-100 bucks price cut. or they might as well hope for a slow momentum gain.... Sorry about my english its my 2nd language.

I've mocked that *censored* Pachter often enough... and I am also pretty burned out on analysts... however, I'd ask my fellow gamers to pay attention to Divnich. Beyond this article, he made VERY accurate predictions in other areas (see the excellent article by Tom Magrino). When it comes to analysts, it's all about "what have you done for me lately"... in this case, he's building up a good track record. Lets not allow him to take us on a ride by deifying him, but likewise, lets not pillory him because of his job. This was one of the best articles I've seen on GS in quite a while. I'm not saying that you should close your eyes and open your mouths.. just... that JD is probably worth NOT mocking for the time being.

"sony has priced themselves out of the market" I call Bull. The total cost of the PS3 is still less than the 360, with al those little hidden costs it has. Lets compare (total cost of ownership for one year): Xbox 360: $199.99-$399.99 for the system + $99.99 for the wireless adapter + $49.99 for 12 months Xbox Live + N/A for Bluray = $349.97-$549.97 Playstation 3: $399.99-$499.99 for system + $0.00 for the wireless adapter (its included) + $0.00 for Playstation Network (its free) + $0.00 for Bluray player (its included) = $399.99-$499.99 The lowest end 360 is only $50 cheaper (end cost) than the cheapest PS3 but if you want a 360 with any true gaming power you are paying $50 more, and thats just after the first year (if you can avoid RROD long enough to have it a year). Even the lowest end PS3 is still a way better value for the money. I will admit the PS3 is not perfect, mostly no Halo, but it is just a far superior system. Before anyone jumps in and calls me a sony fanboy, I played my Xbox while my PS2 was demoted to DVD player duty. I was really hoping that the 360 would live up to its potential but I never expected Sony to get the next-gen console so right, you just get so much more bang for your buck.

Eh~ We'll just have to see what Nintendo has to offer when E3 finally rolls around. I'm actually looking forward to see what the announce game wise since I haven't purchased a Wii game since Tales of Symphonia 2. The shovelware produced seems more of a time buyer so that bigger things can be done. As for Sony, seeing a price drop in 4 months is a pretty big stretch, but I'd like to see that happen that way more of my RL friends can join in with me. I just hope they make some big announcement concerning Home and how they're gonna improve it immensely, even tho we all know that's not going to happen anytime soon. :( But at least with reading this article, this analyst seems to sorta know more about what he's talking about then others I've read. Way to go.

@fps_d0minat0r Penny Arcade did a strip about you! Congratulations: << LINK REMOVED >> "nintendo cant do anything at E3 because their target gamers who are the casuals *cough, noobs* dont find out what happened at E3 anyway so theres no point." Noobs? I was playing Nintendo consoles back when you were spawned from your father chugging a bottle of Wild Turkey at a Ratt concert. Serious gamers always want to see what first-party software Nintendo is cooking up. I may not care about Wii Music, but I damn sure care about the latest bit of inspired lunacy from Miyamoto's wacky brain-pan. Fallout 3 and Little Big Planet are the only games from this generation that get to be in the same breath as Super Mario Galaxy. "who compares the wii with xbox, PS3 or PC? NO-ONE" This is because the Wii is successful, and generates money. Once the other platforms manage the same feat, perhaps they can join Nintendo on the main stage. Microsoft and Sony need to spend a lot less time and money winning over shallow 'core gamers' like you who base their machismo on which video game consoles they own, and more on making appealing games that justify big price tags. Everyone loves to rag on simplistic games like Wii Sports until they remember that people are still playing it today, while the average AAA title gets consumed in a week and then hauled back to PawnShop. All the backlash here reminds me of my alterna-rock days, when any band that gained success beyond our little cult was instantly demonized. That's Nintendo's fate now. They're no longer slavish to our cult of obsessive geekdom, so now we turn on them.

Nintendo has to grow up if they want to even be satisfactory at E3. With people getting more hyped up for GTA more than Mario, Nin has to begin taking risks. If Nintendo gets something like a Devil May Cry for the Wii, I'd get one right away. Zelda and Mario are too baby. Maybe they can begin changing Zelda into Persia but for Mario... the plumber's too old, he may even die earlier than Old Snake. What I'd like to see for Nintendo this year is a handful of games that appeals to the hardcore gaming fans. Perhaps an FPS like CoD. The Wii is good in terms of technology but with such power being used in titles like WiiSports, no wonder the PS3 got ahead. No wonder the PC is getting more respect than the Wii. Simple: Nintendo, grow up.

He talked a lot of sense there and I totally agree. Not so much the part about being suckers for anything Nintendo releases. Maybe the casual crowd but we gamers know when Nintendo is trying to sell us a sack of crap and we let them know that (Wii Music, Animal Crossing:LGTTC). I have big hopes though for a new Mazza or Zelda game, especially Zelda! I don't own a 360 but I am intrigued by what this new motion sensitive camera might offer and how they will increase the capabilities of XBL, etc. I love my PS3 so I'm hoping to see something really impressive from Sony this year, AAA titles, the new motion sensitive doowacky they are working on and some massive improvements to PSN. Tons more PS1 titles, etc. Should be an exciting show this year. I can't wait!

Nintendo have a lot to do non-game wise before they are respectable amongst core gamers again. Lack of real games is only part of their problem, the other problem is their actual consoles are leagues behind the competition in terms of features. Compare how the Wii works with a 360/PS3. You'd be there all day listing all the things Wii doesn't do, or could be doing so much better.

I hate analysts just, yawn... It's totally what if and maybes with no ability to predict anything. The only time that these people come up with any other than vague predictions is usually from inside sources. Nothing is worse than economic analysts though.

i hope they don't ruin the next zelda game, twilight was hollow. if they do i wish they'd sell the rights to square enix or someone who'd at least try, and work on wiiplay 2 and other wonderous titles. brawl is awesome, but it shouldn't cost $300 to play, like how most of us could look at it as.

Wow, finally an analyst that kind of knows what he's talking about - that's a nice change. Though I think he over-generalized a bit, particularly about Nintendo, he does have somewhat of a point. But really, there's no reason for us to be fighting, or say the Wii would be "better" if it had more hardcore games or a realistic Gran Turismo-like game, etc. As a 20 year-old gamer, I'm a Nintendo purist - I love Galaxy, Brawl, and third-party games like Zack and Wiki, de Blob, and Guitar Hero. At the same time I have been starting to explore more - I've bought No More Heroes and GTA: Chinatown Wars. Mario Kart Wii has already been done before, and the fact that Animal Crossing: City Folk was the same as the previous two games was idiotic. Still, I'll prefer the over-the-top gameplay of ExciteBots over a realistic racer like Need for Speed or GT any day. And that doesn't make me NOT a core gamer - I own 19 Wii games and 20 DS games, which I'm pretty sure is considerably larger than most casual players' collections. In that sense, the Wii doesn't "need" more mature titles (especially if it's still selling well). Eventually if I tire of it I'll buy a 360, which I'm starting to think about buying - maybe I'll wait until next generation. The think that's different about this generation is the consoles have specialized audiences. They're just different; that alone doesn't make one objectively better than the other. It just depends which kind of games you want to play.

@totaleklypse: I just want my darned hoverboard already! I don't even ask for floating cities or flying cars.. .just a stinking hoverboard. How many kids who watched Back To The Future thought they MIGHT live to see some of that futuristic goodness? Give me Total Recall... just as you said. If you need to drill a hole in my skull to do it, great... the way the world is most of the time it would be a VAST improvement lol.

I don't understand people why people don't like Sony's software library.. that was my biggest reason to choose the PS3 over 360. Their hardware is a bonus for me.

He seems to know a bit about how its going down, I'll give him that. I'm still on the fence about getting a Wii. I'd like to see a few more hardcore titles make their way over to the Wii, not ports, but titles built from the ground up like The Conduit. I know I have my PS3 or 360 for most of the hardcore titles, but I do like some of the Wii's first party games like Zelda, Mario, and Metroid, so if Nintendo announces some killer apps @ E3, I might just pick one up afterwards.

@totaleklypse: Blu-Ray is definitely the format to go with, but based on previous conversations with SC, I think he means that it wasn't necessary for this generation of gaming. Personally I like it, and think only time will tell, but it's not an absurd view, and the PS3 pricepoint has been a problem. One of the things that gets me about my PS3, isn't the online, or anything to do with the console at all... a lot of my friends can't afford it! Therefore, less real world friends online, etc. Sony did use the PS3 to establish Blu-Ray, for better or worse (I think better) but it DID come at a cost, literally, to gamers. The 360 did it with its failure rate, but, as I say this, my 2nd 360 is in for repairs... free ones. I'm not pleased at all, but... I don't use my PS3 for MP NEARLY as much as my PC or 360, and for no better reason than the nature of PSN, and a smaller social network. Frankly I think the next generation of consoles has a LOT to answer for. The Wii is underpowered and Nintendo is flogging shovelware. The PS3 is prohibitively expensive for some, even if they can put a huge HDD on it, and get a BR player in the deal, and it needs better online support... which I'd HAPPILY pay for. That said, there is promise from all of the big 3, and if they take the right lessons away from this generation, the next could be amazing. However, how can they do that, when E3 used to play such a pivotal role in publicity, and getting HANDS ON with these games? Bottom line: E3 needs to just go back to the bigs, and admit that going small made it affordable... and utterly irrelevent.

1. DC died because piss poor 3rd party support and marketing. may it RIP because it was a great system. with very good first party games with a few 3rd partys 2. how is bluray the wrong format? last i saw toshiba hd dvd died a miserable death. remember Ms picked the wrong format. remember the over priced addon u can no longer get movies for? 3. OG xbox was a flop because it had only a handful of real games and was still stumbling its way into the arena with XBL. not to mention the god aweful controller and late in the gate.

@ nappan Well said, my friend. I saw a commercial on TV the other day for E3 2009, and it said "Prepare to watch the biggest E3 show ever!" ...I was thinking to myself, "What a bunch of bogus! This year's E3 isn't even close to as big as the one in 2006, and the years prior to 2006."

@SalarianChemist: Hmmm.. you're really NOT a fanboy are you? The more I read your posts that aren't about the 360, the more I think you're just very enthusiastic about your fav system, not downing the others. I don't necessarily agree with everything you say in other threads, but your post here, about Nintendo vs. Sony is very much on target. The Dreamcast issue especially... I'm sorry that I called you out for a fanboy in the past SC, I really am.

I'm already more interested in what Divnich has to say vs. some shlub like Pachter. JD has made some uncannily good predictions... I don't think he's an oracle or anything, but I'll consider what he said. @SalarianChemist: Yeah, and it's still very industry-oriented, and less spectacle. Frankly, they need more spectacle lol.

Response regarding, Nintendo vs Sony hardware Here are my thoughts 1. PS1 was the only true piece of high-quality hardware that Sony has designed. Even though the PS1 was designed so well, the success of the original PS1 actually had more to do with the mistakes made by Nintendo and Sega than it did anything else. For example, if Nintendo would have chose to use the CD-ROM format instead of sticking with cartridges, the PS1 never would have seen Final Fantasy 7, and it would have continued to sell poorly in Japan. Remember, up to the point that FF7 was put on the PS1, the Saturn was outselling the PS1 in Japan by a ratio of 5:3. Similarly, if Sega would have done a better job of expecting that the industry would go with 3D graphics instead of 2D, it would have meant that Saturn would probably have been #1. After all, Sega was the company that was "favored" to win the 32-bit era. But all of Sega's mistakes with hardware design ended up costing them. 2. The PS2 and Gamecube both had flaws with their hardware design. PS2 was difficult to develop software compared to the Dreamcast, Xbox, and Gamecube. PS2 also had the lowest-quality textures of any hardware last generation. Dreamcast, Gamecube, and Xbox all used 8MB texture quality, but PS2 only used 4MB texture quality. But look at how the flaws of the competition greatly contributed to the success of the PS2. For example, Dreamcast didn't come packed with a controller that had dual thumbsticks. This doomed Dreamcast from the start, since the first-person shooter era was gaining so much popularity. Another example was how Gamecube was not compatible with DVD. This hurt Gamecube very much. Many people bought a PS2 because it was also a DVD player. And the fact that Xbox and Gamecube launched later than the PS2 didn't exactly help their cause. Xbox had a built in hard drive and contract problems with Intel that would not allow the price to get low enough to compete with PS2 at $149. This generation we saw what happens in a war between Sony and Nintendo when they launch at the same time -- Nintendo kicks their butts. 3. This generation things were very different. Sony launched later than the competition. Sony selected the wrong format. Sony's once again released hardware that was not easy to work with. The hardware was over-priced. There was false hype and outright lies told about the PS3. Sony really did set themselves up to fall this generation in the exact same way Sega did with the Saturn and Nintendo did with the N64.

E3 2009 is still not nearly as big as the last big one in 2006. For example, companies like Atari are not even bothering to attend this years E3.
