E3 is just what the industry needs - Analyst

EEDAR's Jesse Divnich predicts Sony to chase casuals to no avail, a major 360 game exclusive to go download-only, and new Mario and Zelda games from Nintendo.

With the Electronic Entertainment Expo less than three weeks away, the already-impressive flow of rumors and leaks is likely to pick up. So before the waters get too muddied, GameSpot sought out a handful of industry analysts to get their takes on what will happen and what Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo should be focusing on heading into the big show.

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich
EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich

Kicking things off was Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich, who painted a cheery picture of the show as a whole, but expressed concerns about Sony chasing a phantom audience and gamers "evolving" beyond Nintendo.

GameSpot: E3 often gives us a good idea of what trends publishers are going to be chasing in the coming year. Past years have been dominated by open-world titles, extreme sports games, and more recently, rhythm games and casual games. Are there any genres you expect to see out in force at this year's show?

Jesse Divnich: I don't foresee there being any one genre or console dominating the show floor this year. It is clear that based on the current release schedule, the back half of 2009 and especially the holiday season will be packed more so than ever before. Given the AAA-packed schedule in the back half of 2009, you can bet every publisher will be trying to get an early bump in consumer awareness and preorders by showing off their biggest AAA titles scheduled for this year.

GS: What's the most important theme for Microsoft to focus on for the show? What does it need to leave E3 attendees thinking?

JD: The Microsoft Xbox 360 has such a dominating share of the core gaming market that they can begin to show the industry how they plan to take gaming to the next level through their online services. Further, OnLive and its cloud technology is certainly a threat, and it is imperative for Microsoft to illustrate the differentiating features of their online service. I would not be surprised if Microsoft announced a major AA title to be distributed exclusively through Xbox Live later this year (note that I do not mean AAA, but that will not be far behind).

In terms of price cuts, I do not expect Microsoft to drop their price on the Xbox 360--units sales are trending well ahead of last year. The ball is certainly in Sony's court, and Microsoft will not lead the way with any price cut unless a potential PS3 price cut hinders their current sales trends.

GS: How about for Sony?

JD: Sony is certainly on the upper end of the consumer-technology matrix, and their demographic base is narrow. Those who own a PS3 are either loyal Sony fans or are considered technology innovators--those that must own the latest and greatest technologies.

Sony still has a lot of work to do to capture the core video game market. I expect Sony to tackle both spectrums of the market by displaying some of the biggest AAA core titles that are to come in the next two years (God of War III, MAG, Final Fantasy, and so on), as well as present new casual games and technology.

I believe any attempt by Sony to try to appeal to the casual/mainstream markets at this point in the race to be valueless. They have priced themselves out of that market, and until the PS3 gets in the $200-$250 range, the casual, mainstream, and family markets will have no interest. The idea of the one-size-fits-all console has been dead and buried--the demographics of the video game industry are much too diverse, and attempting to target "everyone" will likely cause brand confusion and consumer alienation.

Sony must continue to try to position itself as the No. 2 console in the market by showing its superiority over Microsoft and the Xbox 360. To attack the core market, Sony must add more value to their PlayStation Network, introduce more AAA exclusive titles, and make available better downloadable content, all of which I expect Sony to display this year at E3.

I do not expect any PS3 price-cut announcement at E3. Sony's pricing strategy on the PS3 is too reliant on manufacturing costs. But that being said, I expect a PS3 price cut within the next four months--no doubt. Any E3 PS3 price cut would purely be coincidental timing.

GS: And Nintendo?

JD: Nintendo is such an odd case. They disappointed the E3 crowd last year by showing off what has been the pillar of their success: creating fun and entertaining products. Nintendo is not known for creating complex or in-depth products, yet the gaming sector continues to fault Nintendo for the lack of core titles on the Wii and DS. As an industry, we must begin to accept that most of us core gamers have evolved beyond what Nintendo can offer. It is wrong to assume that a product or company will evolve with us over time ("us" being the core gaming market).

We do not spam the Tonka forums because their new lineup of construction toy trucks lack 22" chrome spinners and a revolving roof bazooka. Why? Because most adults have come to accept that Tonka toys are for kids and no Tonka product could ever appeal to the adult market.

This is no different from Nintendo, except the core market continues to hold on to the ounce of hope that Nintendo will somehow launch a title that could compete on the same levels of Final Fantasy or Call of Duty. What the core of our industry must begin to accept is that we have two different types of appetites when it comes to gaming. One is a hunger for complexity, involvedness, online multiplayer, and depth. The other is the sense of enjoyment from playing an entertaining title.

Nintendo can only quench one of those needs, and expecting them to step outside their comfort zone to compete on the same levels as a Halo or Call of Duty is simply ridiculous. The market wanted more quality mature titles on the Wii and DS, and they got MadWorld and GTA: Chinatown Wars; their sales results speak for themselves.

That being said, E3 is a core-targeted event, and Nintendo must come to stage with a showing of titles that will satisfy our expectations. I expect Nintendo to show off a long list of both first- and third-party titles that are more appealing to the E3 audience. In terms of first-party, Nintendo will likely announce a new Mario title as well as a new Zelda game, which both will not likely hit retail shelves until 2010. For third-party, it will likely consist of games that plan to take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus.

What I hope occurs at the Nintendo event? I hope Reggie shows up onstage wearing a chef's hat to demonstrate a new Wii cooking game and whips up a badass lasagna with the Wii Remote. Because quite honestly, it does not matter what Nintendo shows off, we will buy it. Let's face it, whether you are a hardcore Halo fan, play endless hours of Killzone 2, or you entrench yourself in the house for an entire weekend of World of Warcraft, you know you are a sucker for anything Nintendo releases. We all are, and that's why we love them.

GS: Do you think the ESA has finally found the right format for the show to please its members, attendees and exhibitors?

JD: The somber memories of E3 2008 are long gone, and I could not be happier with the ESA and its members. E3 is what the industry needs to be taken seriously. Every other major sector has a big event every year: Cannes Film Festival, Consumer Electronics Show, International Auto Show, and so on. It is only right that video games get their moment in the spotlight.

With the event a short term away, the format, attendance, and exhibitors look to be in balance with what the industry is expecting. I do not see any downside to E3, this year and even though I am expecting packed floors, long lines, and a slew of useless shwag, I cannot help but feel overjoyed that E3 is finally back.

@inuyasha55 "2. Dude, ur talking about Vimanesba arguing over video games being pathetic? In one of your other commnets u said "i hope you all enjoy the irony of this guy's comment" well im shooting that right back at you and i bet you'll easily see the irony in it too. Because you're doing the exact same thing..arguing over videogames!." Really? Is that right? Wow, it's almost like when I made that comment, I was including myself in the insult as a form of self-deprecating humor. "most of the crap that you write is all insulting people with what they write previously, while youre try to defend Nintendo..but youre not even defending Nintendo because ur not listing points why theyre "good." I guess referring to Galaxy and No More Heroes as the two best games of this generation doesn't count. It's a good thing you're a math genius; your reading comprehension and short-term memory seem to be shot. Maybe you're just a stoner and I should cut you some slack. When I first went on benzos, I could barely remember where I left my IPod. That's self-deprecating humor again. I'll be sure to illustrate it in the future so you can keep up.

aye zskrabs24 ur damn right this guy's one of them geeks that sit on here just to say hey im smarter then you, this guy may be smart, i really dont know, but i know hes not smarter than me in math so i dont really care:D, im still very smart in other things but i love math, i just got 100% this semester in this course that's all about discrete mathematics, like permutations, combinations, number systems and a whole bunch of other stuff (make note that im not doing the same thing as rottenwood, because i am simply telling of my accomplishments, while he is using his sarcastic remarks to insult others) @ RetroGamer34233 "I'm guessing you have facts to back up your senseless dribble, correct? I mean, just this morning I saw how that "superior" console's maker is losing money like it's running out of a faucet. Sure, it may be superior in the graphics department, but I'm from a gaming generation where graphics don't ultimately dictate how good a game is." dude i dont even know what ur first paragraph is about. but your second paragraph...whoever ur comment was directed to was talking about the superiority of the CONSOLE..not the COMPANY so why are u mentioning about sony losing money? Also, superior graphics dont dictate how good a game is, BUT they definately enhance the appeal of the game which will definitely boost up the game's rating. and possibly, the gaming generation that you are from has values that dont apply to this generation, much has changed since then. and @ Rottenwood most of the crap that you write is all insulting people with what they write previously, while youre try to defend Nintendo..but youre not even defending Nintendo because ur not listing points why theyre "good." you said: [[[[@Vimanesba 1. "You're living in the past, where Nintendo used to be the ****." The Wii and DS are currently the top-selling consoles in their respective markets. 2. "I'm sorry but arguing in favor of the Wii is pretty pathetic." Arguing about video games on the Internet is pretty pathetic in general. But it beats doing work. 3. "And Nintendo is only alive thanks to all those kids that buy those cheap crappy games, not because of being a new-gen gaming technology industry." I'm a 30 year-old married homeowner. I have a juvenile sense of humor, to be sure, but I'm no kid. Nintendo appeals to a wide audience.]]]] 1. ok for one, just because Nintendo and DS are the top sellers in their markets doesnt mean theyre the s***, because what Vimanesba meant by "the shi*" was in relation to the games the companies produce. As everyone knows MOST (not all), but most games are for kids and grown ups that need to lose weight (no offense, im not trying to insult them). So, they are not the shi* based on how many consoles they sell. 2. Dude, ur talking about Vimanesba arguing over video games being pathetic? In one of your other commnets u said "i hope you all enjoy the irony of this guy's comment" well im shooting that right back at you and i bet you'll easily see the irony in it too. Because you're doing the exact same thing..arguing over videogames!....and as for me lol im just on here telling people why theyre wrong simply because im on breaaaakk:D for a loooongg time:D and im not talking about lunch break im talkin bout spring/summer break. (Note that, although i guess id be a sony fanboy, im not arguing in favour of a particular console.) And if you're just stating its pathetic and not insulting him, its a pretty lame comeback, pointless really. 3. The only reason why Nintendo appeals to a wide audience is because for one, all the parents buy it for the kids which is why someone said earlier that Nintendo's target audience is for kids due to the font and colour(I AM CANADIAN, haters) schemes. And for two, all the fat people (clearly like you, in your picture..you fat nerd, you:) ) and also old people use it to workout (keep in mind, adults will not go out and simply buy a Wii to work out, unless they had already bought one for their kids then they might possibly use it), instead of hitting the gym, which beats me really:S going to the gym will get you in MUCH better shape. AND finally for three, because of all the Nintendo fans that grew up with it, will definitely pledge their loyalty to buying their new consoles. And i know ur a Nintendo fanboy, like you said, ur first console was a Nintendo and u bought each one ever since...so u wud obviously be a Nintendo fanboy. (It's called inductive reasoning ho*) So Nintendo's audience to casual gamers is really only kids and VERY few adults and elderly people. The only way ur going to make it a wide demographic is by including the teenagers and young adults that are Nintendo fans, which they only buy simply because its a Nintendo console. Very few teenagers and young adults will go out and buy a Nintendo console, unless they are already Nintendo fans (keep in mind im not trying to bring down Nintendo, im just stating why this doofus Rottenwood is wrong)

The fact that nintendo made tons of profits from the sales of their consoles with very little software titles sales. The key of winning the game with casual gamers is to produce CHEAP console (so you don't have to sell the console at a loss) as well as CHEAP cost of production games (such as Wii Fit and alike). It doesn't take years and much money to create Wii Fit compare to the cost of development of Halo or Killzone. And yet, these "CHEAP" games sell like hot cakes!

i dont think a video game company can survive on casual gamers. the average casual gamer owns around 3 games, while i have purchased over 80 games in the last year alone, supplying the revenue of over 25 casual gamers. it doest matter if youve sold 3 times more consoles, when your competition is selling 25 times the software.

this guy sounds like an idiot. Anyone involved in this industry can predict what this guy said. Nintendo dropped the ball at E3 2008 and they know that. For him to say we should just except the path that Nintendos on is just a stupid thing to say. They know that they have to mend with the "hardcore" gamers and they will with a new Mario, a brillant new Zelda, or a Pikmin 3. Maybe Madworld didn`t sell because how long can you play a black and white game? Maybe people don`t want GTA on the DS. Nintendo has really angered me over the passed year (ouside of SSBB) like alot of other people. I don`t think they reallty want to continue down that path.

@zskrabs24 I'm perfectly capable of intelligent factual discussion. I'm just not going to make the effort for someone vomiting up another NINTENDO IS KIDZORZ screed. Had Vimanesba offered up something intelligent to reply to, I would've been happy to oblige.

@Rottenwood " "Sony is surpassing Windows and Nintendo in so many obvious ways, so don't even try to deny it." Read the front-page article about the current state of Sony." hmm mmm, i read that this year they lost 1 billion, the year before they profited 4 billion. this year was only the 2nd loss ever for the company, so i dont think theyre really in a lot of trouble.

I have to disagree about the Wii comments. Which most of this is opinion anyway. So that being said every generation "grows up" and then usually has children. As to where you might have been a "hard core" blow it up and kill everything in sight while spewing every cuss word known to man, out of your mouth. Chances are you don't want your 5 year old doing that. I think the Wii is an awesome all out FAMILY game console. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. And yes, I do like the PS3 and 360. I'm just simply pointing out that the Wii has it's great spots too.

I'm psyched for E3. I got floor passes so I can't wait. Why must I wait 3 more weeks??? Anyway, the article has some points. Nintendo was kind of disappointing last year so they need to bust out an epic new series. Not just stick to Mario, Zelda, and Sonic. Look at Sony, then got all these new franchises possibly starting. Allot of the Wii's hit games are based on a normal Nintendo series (Mario, Donkey Kong) while Sony has so many new stuff starting up. (inFamous, MAG)

@Vimanesba So you're a "hardcore expert gamer," right? I guess that means you play games for a living and you have 25 or so years' experience doing so. I'll also bet most of your "experience" comes from first-person shooters (you've played one, you've played all of them. Just insert generic, violent storyline "here.") and Grand Theft Auto. You probably also think Tetris is for sissies because it actually requires "thinking" and not just shoot up everything in the room. I'm guessing you have facts to back up your senseless dribble, correct? I mean, just this morning I saw how that "superior" console's maker is losing money like it's running out of a faucet. Sure, it may be superior in the graphics department, but I'm from a gaming generation where graphics don't ultimately dictate how good a game is. Like Rottenwood, I'm in the older demographic of gamer (with a childish sense of humor sometimes), but I also know how to have an intelligent conversation, even with someone I disagree with. You apparently don't possess that ability, as proven by your childish generalizations.

@Vimanesba "You're living in the past, where Nintendo used to be the ****." The Wii and DS are currently the top-selling consoles in their respective markets. "I'm sorry but arguing in favor of the Wii is pretty pathetic." Arguing about video games on the Internet is pretty pathetic in general. But it beats doing work. "And you can't say it's better than the PS3, since the PS3 is far superior." I wish I had your powers, where my opinions could become facts simply because I say they are. "In brief, the Wii console is great for little kids and trying "new" things, but for hardcore expert gamers, it doesn't keep up." Hardcore expert gamers? What is this, a Mountain Dew commercial? Or are you another one of Sony's 47 year-old stealth marketers trying to sound cool? "And Nintendo is only alive thanks to all those kids that buy those cheap crappy games, not because of being a new-gen gaming technology industry." I'm a 30 year-old married homeowner. I have a juvenile sense of humor, to be sure, but I'm no kid. Nintendo appeals to a wide audience. "And the Xbox as well gets most of it's profit by the online gameplay, which should be free." Why? Because you say so? Or because you know some magic technology that makes running network servers and technical support agencies a free service? "Sony is surpassing Windows and Nintendo in so many obvious ways, so don't even try to deny it." Read the front-page article about the current state of Sony. "And old people might know about the "history" of videogames, but can't argue that those were better than modern games. It's being close-minded." Closed-minded? I hope you'll appreciate the irony of this statement in hindsight.

fps_d0minat0r's list of invalid points! 1.You have a small brain if you think only small kids use the word noobz™. Vocabulary is same for all ages, the sooner you understand the better. A: Debateable, I think what Rottenwood was trying to point out that even adults can say noob, just that you have a child like brain/features. 2.Sure Nintendoâ™ franchises are legendary, I found out by looking at Mario hes age, 28 and hes still being used by Nintendo lol. A: Sony still beg Konami for a bit of the Solid Snake don't they? 3. I was talking about gaming intelligence,i'm not here to show off my grammatical and punctuation skills so get that into your head too. A: Gaming intelligence? What the **** is that? He was on about intelligence on a whole, and if you were of those who had a higher intellect you wouldn't be drooling all over your keyboard. 4. Where’s wii’s reply to killzone 2, MGS4, GT5, god of war 3, resistance 2, infamous, motorstorm, heavenly sword, uncharted, final fantasy, socom and all the multiplatforms which are better on PS3?????? A: Super Mario Galaxy is a fantastic game, so is Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Legend of zelda, albeit there's not a lot of big fun games out for the wii imo, but the Xbox clearly has better exclusives, since MGS4 is on it's way is it not? Final Fantasy is a disgrace to the name RPG, get a real game.

@ Rottenwood You have a small brain if you think only small kids use the word ‘noob’. Vocabulary is same for all ages, the sooner you understand the better. Sure Nintendo’s franchises are legendary, I found out by looking at Mario’s age, 28 and he’s still being used by Nintendo lol. Even if Sony looses all its exclusives to M$, it will still have higher quality games then the wii……it may have lost some but its created more like motorstorm, resistance, MAG, infamous. If anything, wii needs to get better exclusives because all they have is Mario and sonic and Mario and Mario and donkey Kong and Zelda and Mario and Mario. I was talking about gaming intelligence, I’m not here to show off my grammatical and punctuation skills so get that into your head too. Ill let you know how my degree works, ive studied lots of companies such as McDonald’s who advertise to little kids and they’ve been sued for it……Nintendo is doing the same thing but playing it safe by indirectly marketing to the kids……just look at all the colour schemes and fonts they use as well as the ease and simpleness of the games, its clearly aimed at kids. If it comes down to artistry, how can wii be better if its inferior in graphics like you said? Depth and length are not anywhere near PS3 games……firstly the wii doesn’t have the processing power to handle large environments with lots of physics, AI and effects. Secondly wii games are on DVD which is not even 1/5th the size of blu-ray therefore having less potential to add more levels, even if their tiny compared to the levels on PS3. And if you like to discuss how much Nintendo makes then there’s better websites then Gamespot. Gamespot is aimed at gamers, not economists or businessmen/women. Btw Sony isn’t making losses, your stupid if you believe that. It’s in a financially stable position which is why Sony share index is higher then Microsoft's (14/05/09 @ 11:52 am) Sony share: 25.85 M$ share: 19.75 Nintendo share: 33.65 For the number of units Nintendo is ahead by, their share value isn’t very impressive is it??? Less then 10 higher from a company who’s “making losses” If you know nothing about business then don’t talk. Supermario galaxy isnt the best game…...MGS4 is. Better graphics, physics, resolution, sound, story, AI, animations, bigger environments……basically everything…..except sales which matters so much to you. Where’s wii’s reply to killzone 2, MGS4, GT5, god of war 3, resistance 2, infamous, motorstorm, heavenly sword, uncharted, final fantasy, socom and all the multiplatforms which are better on PS3?????? Wii costs only £170, I could go and buy that now…..its like going to tesco’s to buy a gallon of milk……however the wii isnt worth it, rather spend that money on real games which the PS3 offers.

I have always been a Nintendo fan. I traded my PSP for the DSi and I really enjoy the DSi. I think that Nintendo should continue to embrace the casual audience as they are the mainstay behind the DS/Wii. I for one enjoy the casual DS games and at the same time I enjoy the RPG's such as FF III and FFCC Ring of Fates on the DS platform. I also find Animal Crossing: Wild World and Mario Kart DS along with Zelda: Phantom Hourglass timeless enjoyable games. I for stand behind Nintendo and support them. I dislike Sony because of it's narrow minded approach. Sony only appeals to a narrow audience while Nintendo and Microsoft have appealed to a broader audience. However I might purchase the PSP 4000 so I can make use of the PSP Skype feature and play Star Wars: The Clone Wars Republic Heroes.

Jesse Divnich, How does Final Fantasy have more depth then Zelda? Because there are really long story mode cut scenes that have nothing to do with gaming? And the main Mario games are so fun because of its depth and the fact that it is so well designed. MadWorld... Quality mature game? How is this game mature? Because it has a lot of swearing and you get to do the same things to stupid ai again and again and get to see lots of blood while doing it? Analyst..? needs to know more about gaming TBH... Thinking Halo is more indepth then Mario or Zelda. HA!

with no digital output for sound, no hd graphics and limited memory, nintendo have chosen this path themselves. i own a wii, 360 and ps3. madworld is a VERY cool game but i wont spend money on it. my money is on star ocean, valkyrie chronicles, sacred 2 etc. i will not buy 'serious' games for wii. for me it has become a youtube console (and boy its BRILLIANT for loungeroom youtube!) and something that gets dusted off when the girls come over and get drunk and rowdy like the boys. the ps3 is used when im by myself and the 360 is my primary online console that all my mates own. i chat to mates all over the country on live most nights. kicking thier ass at something makes it sweeter. for your 'market stats' i am a 29 yo 'hardcore' gamer who doesnt watch any tv. games are my preferred choice of medium next to the internet and then movies and shows take 3rd and 4th place on my priority list.

Nintendo needed to make Brawl more like Melee. Because that was their saving grace and they kind of blew it. With lots of loading, long story mode and the Smash Ball got really tiring, really fast.

Nintendo could quench both tastes, but refuses to. Nintendo is simply chasing the money right now. Wii sports can appeal to both core and casual, it just doesn't have the lasting power. If it had online multiplayer (that didn't require hoops to jump through), I'm sure a lot more of us would be playing more often. As for the Mature content for Nintendo platforms, they would have sold better had they made it to market sooner. Now, I mean the games would have had to make it out with their current quality. Back when the core still trusted Nintendo and whole-heartedly supported the Wii, MadWorld would have been a blockbuster. For DS, well, it's more complicated. I stick with the same mantra: Have variety in your market and it will grow. Without a large selection of mature content, you have nothing to offer the mature market. The first few dozen games will be sales flops at the get go, but once the reputation changes, they will be bought when the customers come.

@Rottenwood You're living in the past, where Nintendo used to be the ****. I'm sorry but arguing in favor of the Wii is pretty pathetic. I mean it's only a smaller Gamecube! And you can't say it's better than the PS3, since the PS3 is far superior. In brief, the Wii console is great for little kids and trying "new" things, but for hardcore expert gamers, it doesn't keep up. And Nintendo is only alive thanks to all those kids that buy those cheap crappy games, not because of being a new-gen gaming technology industry. And the Xbox as well gets most of it's profit by the online gameplay, which should be free. Sony is surpassing Windows and Nintendo in so many obvious ways, so don't even try to deny it. And old people might know about the "history" of videogames, but can't argue that those were better than modern games. It's being close-minded. Play Beyond!

Nintendo has a niche market and that is why they develop the games that they do. I agree that Tonka toys is not a good example. How about Disneyland compared to Magic Mountain. Magic Mountain might have the rides that I would enjoy more, but the theme is gone. Magic Mountain will never have the themes that Disneyland has and therefore has to target an older market, however younger generations still visit there as they have a small kiddie section. But face it, their demographic is not small children. Let's face it, Nintendo has a positive cheerful presentation that cannot be duplicated.

@fps_d0minat0r "just because you have been playing mario or other nooby games for years and years doesnt mean your not a noob." Going by your name and excessive use of the word 'noob,' I'm guessing you're on the younger side. Since bullying kids is a little scandalous at my age, I'll keep this brief. "no matter how many first party titles nintendo make, their never gonna have the depth of first party titles and exclusives PS3 will have." Nintendo's first-party franchises are legendary and have been critically and commercially successful for decades. Sony, on the other hand, is rapidly hemmoraging exclusives to Microsoft. I will say this, though: Little Big Planet is amazing, and The Show is far and away the best baseball simulation. If anything, Sony desperately needs to lock up more exclusives to keep up with the 360. "as a business nintendo are sucessful and i would definatly invest shares in that company because theres more noobs with a low IQ then there are intelligent competitive gamers" I would sharpen up your grammar, punctuation, and general sentence structure before disparaging the intelligence of others. "I study accounting and financial management with business management and almost all their ratios are excelent." Let us know how all that works out. I smell a young captain of industry in the making. "however as a gamer, they dont offer good graphics, depth of gameplay, competitive online gameplay, length of games and the controls are always basic like we have an IQ of 20 or something." The graphics are obviously going to be inferior to the competition, at least on a technological level. It all comes down to artistry in the end, though. Depth and length are perfectly comparable to the other platforms. On-line play is not a Wii priority, true, but I assume most Wii fans aren't looking to compete on-line, since that would involve spending free time with people like you. "and on gamespot, were not businessmen, were gamers so sales and profits dont mean anything to us." This article is about the business aspect of the industry, and we're here to discuss that, because that can be interesting, too. I suspect that if Sony wasn't in third and bleeding money, profits would be much more important to you. "well not me anyway, if u buy a console just because others buy it without looking at the facts then its up to you." I bought it because I've owned every Nintendo console since the NES, and found them to provide great fun. Some were better than others, obviously - the N64 has aged poorly for the most part - but I've always felt my money was well-spent. "name me 1 fact in favour of the wii thats actually to do with gaming. for everyone 1 reasonable fact you name, ill name you 5 reasonable facts why PS3 is better." Super Mario Galaxy, the best game so far of this hardware generation, is a Wii exclusive. That's the only reason you need, really. If you must have the best, you need a Wii. No More Heroes is by far the most inventine, hilarious, and creative action game in years. My wife will actually use the Wii. And so on. Obviously, you're not here to be convinced. That's fine. If you like the PS3, roll with it. When I played MGS4 or Little Big Planet, the PS3 damn sure seemed like the best console there is. Then I played Mass Effect, and the 360 was obviously the best console there is. Then I played Galaxy, and the Wii is obviously the best. As you get older, you'll care less and less about how manly your electronic toys are, and gain an appreciation for the medium as a whole. It's easy for me as a grown-up with ample disposable income to own all three platforms and sample the gamut of games; your budget is probably more strained. You've got some great gaming years ahead of you; enjoy 'em!

@ jerseynut2004 ...The Wii might bring gaming to a lot more people, but you can't particularly call them "hardcore". The "core" is in an odd spot right now, with the Wii selling to untraditional buyers like crazy and having to appeal to that, the sour tales of the 360 probably spoil its name more than they should, and the PS3 in an alternate reality where bluray was 2 years earlier where they got the head start (re: Japan). "Hardcore" in the sense of articles means more... people who'll go dump hundreds on a new TV or speaker set, the types that replace parts on their PCs for performance and the types that buy accessories like high-quality headsets, fighting game controllers, etc.. They CAN be into any system and any game type, but Wii players are far and away on the low end of that spectrum compared to 360, PS3 and PCs. PSN and XBL also slowly drain floating cash from these types via high-profit DLC... another sign of "hardcore" being when you'll buy anything with the name of a game you like plastered on it, or pay $5-10 extra in frustration for features that could easily have come shipped with a game. Though I'd argue the person interviewed has a few gaming biases, his points are valid. Wii needs to spread "up", PS3 "down" and 360 has to keep momentum. Pretty straightforward. ...He's just insane if he thinks the PS3 will be in the $200-250 range for another 2 years, with the bluray and whatnot-- the person speaking apparently forgetting that's what the "manufacturing costs" issue means.

Ok, Nintendo is NOT like Tonka. He's implying that Nintendo has always made casual games, ignoring gems like Ocarina of Time, Metroid Prime, and Super Smash Bros. Titles like Wii Music haven't always been their big announcements; that's just recently. Nintendo has shown that they have the skills to sell on both sides of the casual/hardcore barrier; they just don't right now. And about everybody disliking Wii Music? Wii Music did not look like a "fun and entertaining product." Sure, it was probably fun for a while, but its overwhelming lack of depth was what killed it. There just isn't enough you can do with it! What the Wii needs is some hardcore games that aren't just bloodbaths. A lot of the hardcore games that have come out have been (like MadWorld and Dead Space) super-gorey. Can't we have some hardcore games that DON'T have profuse bleeding and sex scenes? There is such a thing. The T rating needs some attention. I don't want the option to be either Chicken Shoot or MadWorld. I just hope that The Conduit sells well, so that developers see what the Wii's REAL potential is.

What a great read. I love his view on Nintendo and it exactly how I feel. If you don't like their games don't play them stay inside and play WOW and Killzone 2 forever. As for me I'm still having too much fun playing as Luigi in Super Mario Galaxy. Or Samus in MP 3 for that matter. Graphics, guns and bloody explosions aren't the only thing that makes a good game. As far as X-Box being a superior machine to Wii, yes as far a graphics but both of my friends have sent their X-Boxes back to the manufacturers three or four times because of the Red Ring of Death, superior machine my butt. I'll stick with my Wii and PS3 at least they haven't broken and still work.

I work in an Entertainment store and the growing trend here seems to be that our XB360 players are trashing there systems after dozens of red rings and going PS3 citing that they could have bought 3-4 PS3s with the ammount of money they spent on XB360 breaking. Our Wii's have been a huge seller up till a month ago, now we have 40 of them sitting in the back room and no ones buying them.

To fps_d0minat0r: That's ridiculous! Nintendo has produced many hardcore games for the Wii!!! MadWorld, No More Heroes, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and Super. Smash Bros. Brawl are just a FEW of the top-notch games Nintendo has released that are NOT for little kids!!! Do some research before you harass one of the leading Video Game companies! And by the way, I am not a Nintendo noob. I have an Xbox 360 elite, and enjoy it very much. However, I also enjoy the quality hardcore games that the Wii has to offer, and ones that incorporate the the Wii's extensive motion-sensing capabilities far exceed games of the same genre on other consoles!

It's amazing how someone who actually analyses the market and the current figures gets picked on by a bunch of fan boys. fps_d0minat0r, your name, and your picture prove that you're just some sad lonely kid trying to prove that the ps3 is "am4z1ng", Killzone was terrible, no depth, shoddy controls, hyped to the max. Same with Halo, Halo 1 was groundbreaking, but the sequals that followed it were again hyped and over-rated. Now, jaw dropping games, is that by gameplay or graphics, because if you measure a game on graphics you're a freaking child, because last I checked, millions of people pay monthly subscriptions to play a grind-fest old looking WoW. I'm looking forward to The Witcher 2, Alan Wake, Prototype, Batman and the Lionhead studios project Richter. You also claim you're a business student, last I checked you needed decent qualifications to get into those subjects, yet you've shown nothing but ignorance.

@ Rottenwood nintendo isnt known for bringing top quality, jaw dropping games at E3 anyway. they just make babying games like mario kart and just cus the kids find it fun it sells......E3 is definatly not a place for nintendo and you know it. however be stubborn all you want, when nintendo has nothing to compete against the lights of MAG, heavy rain, GT5, MW2 ect then ask your self why you bothered arguing with me.

There's a SEGA Sammy blog that reveals what the RingEdge project is << LINK REMOVED >> Qoute: "The link appears to be fake but if you read carefully almost everything on the blog sounds accurate and makes sense. "With the Nintendo Wii hitting retail and gaining worldwide superstardom of the likes never witnessed SEGA SAMMY once again immediately got to work on another system with orders from the boss himself Satomi-san. This system shall be a HD casual console and is designed to compete with the successor to the Wii. The design of the system FGN can officially confirm was finalised in late 2008, it's arcade variant goes by the name "RINGEDGE" the specifications of the system are as follows. The chosen CPU is the Intel Pentium E2160 Allendale 1.8GHz Dual-Core Processor, the GPU of choice is the Shader Model 4.0 compliant 9600GSO with 384 MB GDDR3 RAM, System memory measuring 1GB DDR2-800. Other features include an onboard HD audio DSP, 32GB SSD, standard DVD, and WiFi connectivity. SEGA SAMMY plans on shipping the system with two controllers, a motion sensing remote and one which looks similar to the Saturn 3D controller. One for casual gaming the other for non-casual. To top this off SEGA SAMMY shall be using a stripped down version of Microsoft's Windows Embedded Standard 2009 for ease of development. This particular version differs from the standard version where only the DirectX functionality is included, the standard edition costs $90 per shipping device. As SEGA SAMMY's version doesn't include the non gaming features SEGA SAMMY has managed to get a hold of the OS for less than half of that cost. SEGA SAMMY plans on launching the system in time for the holiday season of 2010 for no less than $200 and no more than $250. The company doesn't plan on publically acknowledging the project this year, thus an official announcement won't take place until the 1H of 2010. Stay tuned for part 2 of our world exclusive where we shed light on SEGA SAMMY's consumer plans for the "RINGWIDE" According to the blog, the NEW system will launch in 2010. Plus there's some mysterious youtube user named "RingEdge" who's now claiming that SEGA of America will give some sort of hint at a new console at E3 and rumors that SEGA may annouce the machine as early as September 9,2009. Sega also has two booths at E3 as well and a meeting room. My prediction, Capcom and many other Japanese publishers have a surprise for everyone. There's also a link for two controller patent designs. << LINK REMOVED >> (I know it looks like the Saturn 3D pad but the patent filing number 7,488,254 is way ahead of Sega Saturn's us patent number which is "5,371,792.) Here's another one: << LINK REMOVED >> (it looks like the Genesis/Mega Drive six button pad but with added motion sensors)

@Rottonwood - There are a few reasons RE4 did well on the Wii. 1) people wanted to see motion controls help an already dated play control. 2) There were no other options for M rated games. 3) RE4 already has tons of people that buy it because of its franchise power... I think other M titles could do just fine on the Wii. But established franchises are about all they can do and still pull it off. As for the PS3 hitting mainstream... I don't know anyone that bought a PS3 for anything other than they: 1) want the NEW HD gaming system from the future! or 2) owned a PS2 and just stuck with the brand... So I probably have to agree with the analysis there. Once the price is dropped people might care it exists outside of those two demographics. But you are right on one thing... just about anyone could have predicted such, as it is a continuation of what we already have going on... Best line of the whole thing: "We do not spam the Tonka forums because their new lineup of construction toy trucks lack 22" chrome spinners and a revolving roof bazooka. Why? Because most adults have come to accept that Tonka toys are for kids and no Tonka product could ever appeal to the adult market. This is no different from Nintendo" See Nintendo is a kids device. And as long as people view video games as "Nintendo" the industry really can't take off can it? Sorry, had to fan the flames for those Wii only owners.

"The market wanted more quality mature titles on the Wii and DS, and they got MadWorld and GTA: Chinatown Wars; their sales results speak for themselves. " what result? good or bad?" The result, as always, is not to listen to analysts. Resident Evil 4 has sold about 4 or 5 million copies across Nintendo platforms, compared to about 2 million on the wildly popular PS2, yet apparently there's no audience for 'core' software in the Nintendo base... because MadWorld didn't sell well. Apparently he hadn't considered the fact that Resident Evil 4 is amazing and MadWorld is forgettable mediocrity. Nintendo also apparently can't compete with Halo or Call of Duty, because these apparently have 'depth' and 'complexity' that Nintendo can't handle. I don't remember Halo having any depth, but I remember it being a fun FPS with cool vehicles. It's a shooter, for crying out loud. It doesn't even have the depth of, hell, I dunno, Super Paper Mario. But then again, I'm not the brilliant analyst. And Sony has to concede the mainstream market? Huh? They WERE the mainstream market last generation. You make a good enough game, and a measly extra $100 won't be an obstacle. Whether or not Sony can pull another Grand Theft Auto 3 out of their hat is anyone's guess, but if they do, they'll be truckin' once again. It's going to have to be a new sort of exclusive, though: God of War and Final Fantasy are monsters, but they won't capture the pop culture anymore. Please tell me how much this guy makes. I'll take half that to pop onto a blog every night and cite the extremely obvious using trends only from the last two years.
My predictions were something similar to his. Nintendo isn't for core gamers and let face it, it won't be any time soon. I hope they keep what they are doing good, casual gamers and Mario, Zelda and some other cult games . I hope Sony pulls a good show and show us something big and I have a feeling that that will happen . Microsoft will pull himself a bit back this E3 but they will do something that will attract a good amount of Audience . So my predictions are that Sony is going to have the best show this year, followed by Nintendo only if they keep themself on the sector where they are good OR, like a miracle, they give us a lot of third party, more core oriented informations for future games. Microsoft may have something in secret but nothing toooo big. I also hope that E3 is going to big this year, better then the last 2 years . Well there are less then 3 weeks till it, so not much time to wait anymore
