E3 2019: Marvel's Avengers Game Gets Its First Trailer, But It's Still Unclear What That Game Actually Is

During E3 2019, Square Enix finally revealed a trailer for the long-awaited Marvel's Avengers game. The trailer had some gameplay, but it's still very unclear what type of game Marvel's Avengers is.

The game's been previously marketed as an action game, and there are definitely moments of explosive action and combat in the trailer. We see Iron Man dodge missiles and fire his repulsers at tanks, Hulk smash those same tanks, and Thor calling down the lightning and crushing people with Mjolnir. Captain America and Black Widow even get a few moments where they take out some enemy grunts.

Now Playing: Marvel's Avengers Game To Be Revealed At E3 2019 - GS News Update

So there is action, but it all seems rather scripted. It's a bit difficult to tell where the gameplay moments end and the cutscenes begin. Frankly, the trailer is reminiscent of Order: 1886. Which isn't bad necessarily, but that didn't seem to be the type of game that Square Enix had advertised before tonight. In a panel description for Marvel's Avengers, the game was described as "the defining Avengers gaming experience: an epic action-adventure."

But that adventure seems restricted to a single forward plane. The characters aren't moving around a space. The trailer suggests the Avengers are each confined to tackling enemies and obstacles in a very specific order. Hopefully, we'll have a much better understanding of what Marvel's Avengers is when we see it at E3 this week.

The story was a bit more clear at least. The trailer showcases Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Black Widow become ostracized from society after failing in a mission that costs the lives of innocents. However, the world still needs avenging and so the group decides to unite one more time. They're joined by other ex-Avengers, such as Hank Pym, aka Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Yellow Jacket/Goliath.

“repulsers”. I always thought it was repulsor when it comes to Iron Man. It isn’t used to be repulsed. People aren’t supposed to be repulsed by it.

Just saw the latest season of Black Mirror episode 1. Maybe this game will be based on that. It already has that character that flies, but for some reason, they didn’t address him as a superhero even when he got arrested.

To me, it sounded like a game similar to Left 4 Dead. Not necessarily hordes of enemies but replayable levels like l4d.

It is certainly unclear whether the sequence shown had any real gameplay in it or if it was showing scripted scenes. I can believe that it was made in engine but many of the sequences were too scripted. But it was also showing the prologue so the majority of the game isn't even part of this sequence that was shown. So being the prologue I can see this section being a single player section where it allows you to play each character initially to get a feel for the fighting style of the characters.

@koredan: It probably was majority scripted but built entirely in-engine... I believe it said it was an in-engine demo in the beginning. Some aspects like the black widow and captain america takedowns look to be gameplay but too early to tell. I'm hoping the combat is inline with maybe Batman where each character has a base melee style that incorporates personal aspects. For instance, in the Batman games, it was largely melee with certain button prompts for takedowns and gadget use. Apply that to say Thor and you get the same deal but with button prompts for various Mjolnir abilities and takedowns.... Black Widow and Capt would be like Batman with MMA abilities and takedowns that incorporate BWs pistols and Caps Shield

I'd like to know if the coop is for the campaign or for other coop missions of some kind. It didn't seem particularly clear.

Crossplay would also be nice, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. Especially with a load of exclusive stuff teased for PS4 players.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is already looking better by defeault because they didnt even explain what kind of game Avengers is lmao
they admitting to having a demo ready but why only corporate schmucks and journalist get to see it?
