E3 2017: Xbox Exec On Xbox One X Being More Expensive Than PS4 Pro

The console is $100 more expensive than the PS4 Pro.

The Xbox One X is priced at $500 in the US, which is a full $100 more than the console it will likely get most frequently compared to, PlayStation 4 Pro. The Xbox One was $100 more expensive than the PS4 when those systems launched in 2013, and that did not end up turning out very well for Microsoft. Is history going to repeat itself? Microsoft is confident in the appeal and the uniqueness of Xbox One X, but only time will tell.

Speaking to GameSpot today at E3, Microsoft's Dave McCarthy told us that Xbox One X stands alone when it comes to power and value. He added that PC, not PS4 Pro, is a better comparison to Xbox One X, and Microsoft's console represents a strong value when looking at it this way, he said.

No Caption Provided

"As far as I'm aware, there is nothing that offers the combination of power and performance at the price that we're doing right now [with Xbox One X]," he said. "If I were to make a comparison on the capabilities with the 6 teraflops and the extra RAM we have in the machine, the true 4K gaming, which is more than just the 8 million pixels; you've got HDR, spacial audio support with Dolby Atmos. I would make more of a comparison to the PC space in terms of capabilities. And at that price point, I think it's a wonderful premium device in terms of operating those capabilities. Xbox One is still a great device for us; supporting HDR gaming and the 4K video and the 4K Blu-ray stuff.

"But comparison wise, I don't think that combination of price, performance, and form factor is rivalled in the market at all." The Xbox One X launches on November 3. Internationally, it will go for £449, €499, CA$599, and AU$649.

Our conversation with McCarthy covered a number of other Xbox topics. Keep checking back with GameSpot soon for more.

I don't have that money ATM, but it's the perfectly fair price tag.

I think the difference in price is justified considering what’s under the hood but what’s going to be a better question is whether or not consumers feel it’s worth upgrading from an Xbox One or to a lesser extent a PS4/Pro.

Add in the fact that there will be no exclusive games harnessing the full power of this upgraded console (At least this is the impression Phil gave.) and it becomes an even more grey area for people who are undecided.

@videogameninja: Any new game will be able to take advantage of full X1X power, since it has a PC architecture and should be easily scalable (just like a PC). It's just a matter of different graphic settings. X1/X1S won't be holding it back at all.

@videogameninja: And how are there no exclusive games harnessing the full power of the console? I am pretty sure that Forza 7 running in native 4k in 60 FPS harnesses the power of the console.

@milehighbossman: I was under the impression that they are still limited in how much power they can use thanks to making it for the Xbox One as well. If they were making a game from the ground up for Xbox One X without the Xbox One in mind I would imagine their would be a noticeable difference.

@videogameninja: In a recent previous interview. MS says that games designed for the Xbox family from this day forward will be designed for power and performance first then tuned down to play on weaker systems.

@videogameninja: So then in that case the PS4 Pro does not have any exclusive games that harness the full power of the console either then?

@milehighbossman: Yup, they both don't have exclusives... But first party games should take advantage of the Pro and X power.

@milehighbossman: Once again I thought there was a substantial difference between the Xbox One and the Xbox one X. The difference between the PS4 and the PS4 Pro isn't as much a jump unless I'm clearly missing something (Don't worry, Ninja. You are.).

@videogameninja: Actually the Pro architecture is very different from PS4. That's why initially the Pro power was locked behind a special patch which enabled the software-hardware interface.

MS is much more used to having software interface with multiple hardware configs, so hopefully that means more options for devs on how to take advantage of extra power.

@videogameninja: This just seems like a EGO console, Oh Sony has the performance crown, lets take it back just because we can do it...

Ask yourself a simple question Did MS need a new system after the One S... EvEn after the One S they were still lacking exclusive games... Games you can't get nowhere else

MS seems to think the reason there weren't getting exclusive games is because there hardware is majorly inferior when it wasn't..

I think the major reason they weren't getting exclusive is because they weren't wooing 3rd with cash to bring the game to there system first and stay there for awhile

They did it in the 360 era and it paid of tremendously

@slypher9: You are right man, MS got scared when SONY announced the development of a more powerful PS4, they (MS) completely misunderstood what made them 2nd place, they taught that it's because of lack of power or something, while in reality they were lacking behind because of lack of exclusive games. SONY played them around on purpose or unconsciously, SONY knew that technology is running and the only way to time-proof the Playstation 4 were to update it so it can catch up with 4k which is starting to be the trend, but MS thought that they could overdone them and win the war with a new and more powerful console, but they were wrong!!! Now that they made this big jump into R&D for a new console, without exclusives they just dug their own grave. I'm pretty sure that SONY won't announce any new Playstation console right now because they're still winning this generation, the best strategy is to wait until November when MS will launch the Xbox ONE X, slash a $50 down on the PRO and the slim and to top it all, release GOD of WAR on November, more nails in their coffin.

I wouldn't want MS to fail this one cause I'm planing to get an Xbox ONE S later on and without proper challenge SONY will stop pumping them good games we're having right now.

If XoX gives me closer to native 4K resolutions with HDR and possibly even 60fps as opposed to the PS4 Pro upscaling from 1440p and still only at 30fps I'll gladly spend the extra $100. I love PC gaming and I love the PS4 Pro but come on, the XoX is not the same and should not be compared. It's not just the TFLOPS, it's the architecture and how the data gets handled through the hardware. The Pro was the result of pushing the existing AMD hardware to it's limit while the "Scorpio" architecture is more like a redesign of the AMD chip to make it and DX12 actually perform as planned. Xbox games could see benefits far greater than the Pro just because the data is getting handled more efficiently and cooler with less throttling from heat.

If i don't have a HD TV does it make sense i purchase this, just for more stable frames?

It just seems this system along with the Ps4 Pro is gonna carve out a small niche market.

@slypher9: I don’t think they even make non-HD TVs anymore.. just make sure whatever next set you get has HDR in addition to 4K if you want the best picture fidelity that the latest games/movies have to offer.. its becoming a lot more mainstream now as well as its affordability

@zeroap00: The 4K Blu-ray alone is worth quite a bit, let alone everything else. The amount of hardware upgrades and software upgrades to make it as efficient as it is. Direct DX12 integration is going to make a huge difference on its own. I already have a gaming PC and that cost a fortune to build. This is a really good value for what you're getting, especially not having to replace anything but the console itself if you're upgrading.

@MetaMods: It upscales for 1080 TVs so the image will still get a bit sharper. I don't have 4K either so that's nice to know, but I'll be getting it for the increased load times and overall smoother experience. The form factor is much better than the OG Xbox One I've got now too.

@spoochy: it will be better if they let you install the game on HDD, not sure if they did on Xbox One, it will make load time faster and better experience. It will not need those processor/RAM to cruch those numbers. At the end most games will not be in native 4K, so I still going wait for while before upgrade new tv
