SANTA MONICA, Calif.--Last February, THQ announced it would be partnering with Games Workshop to expand the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the massively multiplayer online market. To help it do so, THQ tapped its recently acquired Austin-based studio Vigil Games. Today, the publisher revealed Vigil's second project, and as with the first, the developer is going to war.

Today, THQ announced Darksiders: Wrath of War for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, to be available in 2008. Darksiders will feature action adventure gameplay in an open-world environment. THQ further touts "a deep combat system and a huge arsenal of modern and mythical weapons," reflecting the game's supernatural scenario.

Vigil Games was cofounded in 2005 by famed comic-book artist Joe Madureira, whose work has been featured in X-Men, Battle Chasers, and The Ultimates comics. Written by Madureira, Darksiders visits the recently popular gaming destination of the postapocalyptic world. Players will assume the role of the red horseman of destruction, War, accompanied by his trusty steed Ruin. However, instead of ripping the world asunder, War is betrayed, stripped of his powers, and cast down to Earth. He then sets out on a quest of vengeance.
