Dragon Quest 11: Definitive Edition Coming To Xbox Game Pass, PS4, And PC This December

Square Enix is bringing its acclaimed JRPG to Xbox One and Game Pass later this year with all the bells and whistles of the Switch version.

Square Enix's critically acclaimed Dragon Quest XI is coming to Xbox, the publisher announced ahead of today's Xbox Showcase event. The game will launch on Xbox One, Windows 10 PC, and Xbox Game Pass on December 4, and will be playable on Xbox Series X.

The latest entry in the beloved JRPG series, Dragon Quest XI casts players in the role of the Luminary, the reincarnation of a legendary hero who is fated to save the kingdom of Erdrea from the forces of darkness. The Xbox version is based on Switch's Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition, which featured re-recorded music, the option to play the adventure in 2D, and other enhancements.

This is the first time the Dragon Quest series has made its way to Xbox.

In addition to Xbox, Square Enix has confirmed it is bringing Dragon Quest XI S to PS4 and Steam as well. The original version of the game was previously released for both platforms, but this marks the first time the Definitive Edition will be available on them. However, because it is a port of the Switch version, it will be released as its own separate game--so if you already own the original Dragon Quest XI on either platform, you won't simply be able to upgrade that to the Definitive Edition.

Dragon Quest XI originally released on PS4 back in 2017, with the aforementioned Switch version following in 2019. We awarded the game a 9/10 in our original Dragon Quest XI review. Critic Heidi Kemps wrote, "Dragon Quest XI is one of the best modern examples of this; its beautiful presentation, both visual- and story-wise, combines with a tried-and-true gameplay formula for a journey that's full of heart and soul. Once you find yourself sucked into the world of Dragon Quest XI, it's going to be hard to put down until you reach the grand finale."

Microsoft's Xbox Showcase featured lots of Xbox Series X games, including a look at Halo Infinite and several previously unannounced first-party titles like Obsidian's Avowed and a new Fable. You can catch up on all the biggest news from the broadcast in our Xbox Showcase recap.

It's 4k enhanced for Xbox one X too which is a good. That it will be on Gamepass is even better news.

Noooo... I took so long deciding between the Steam and Switch versions, but ended up buying it on Switch because of all the extras they added. It looks and plays like s**t compared to the PC version (but otherwise a great game). Now I'm about 50 hours in and wish I had waited just two more weeks :|

This is another a big F*** You to the people who own the original PS4 and PC versions. They should really offer a discount on this version if you own those.

@ebola9717: Ehhh, I own both and feel just fine. Played it years ago, great game...... put 270hrs on the pc version in 2k at 60 fps. There are a few features, a 16-bit version, Japanese voice, .... but no changes in story. Also doesn't the steam version upgrade to the definitive edition, without an extra payment, and PS4 get them as add on content.?

Point is, it'll be 10th gen before playing this game for the 3rd time.

No and no. They are literally porting the Switch version to PS4, Xbox, and PC. They will never add the new content to the old PS4 and PC versions, because they had to rebuild the game for Switch. You have to buy new copies on those platforms.

@ebola9717: Ah i see what you mean now. I just checked out the steam page, arrgh. I do not know if I can give up 2k HDR at 60fps for new quality of life and a 16-bit version. Not being a pc snob, as I also played it for many hours on the ps4, but after seeing this world on a quality monitor at hi/res and FR, I just cannot go back.

The DRAGON QUEST® XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age™ - Digital Edition of Light on steam has those features and upgrades for PC but at original 60$ price point. Yeah, your right no reason to buy a 3 yr old game all over again, a big middle finger to those who have already purchased. They should at least allow a DLC upgrade for $5 or something.

I plan to wait a few years and the DE of Light will prob be the only version selling at that point, and pick up for very little. I am not too unhappy I bought a couple of months after it came out, and have put a few hundred of hours 'happily' on ps4 and pc. My PS4 version played by a couple of family here also. I do wish those who bought the original pc or ps4 could upgrade for a small fee.

@jenovaschilld: I don't think it is patchable code though. It's based on Switch version and enhanced from there not the PC or PS4 version. It is annoying though all the same if you bought the earlier one.

Oh hell yeah! I’ve been wanting this franchise to finally make its way to the Xbox platform. Currently playing Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition on the Switch and absolutely loving it. I’ll definitely double dip and get the Xbox version as well.

Excited to get to play this one, but I'm fearful for the time I'll want/need to pour into it.

@lionheartssj1: Then you probably should not watch this review as it will cause too much excitement for the game, a gloriously long and loving game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iTbUGItU0s Kotaku Dragon quest 11 review by legendary Tim Rogers.

Again avoid this review.... really do not click on that link. Do not do this to yourself. That blue link above, yeah stay away. For realz now.

@jadephoenix13: Let us be honest, I love Xbox but their library 8th gen was sadly bland and tone deaf in regards to variety. A AAA masterpiece JRPG like DQ11, while years late, is a breath of fresh air needed for such a heavy FPS/ bro game platform. While you may never play it or this game might not be something for you, a higher tie in ratio of software even by one game is good for xbox, you, me, and even the gaming industry itself. The only people that might be saddened is PS4 fanboys, that lose a high-def console version of this game running super sweet on xb1x.

I personally played this on PC at 2k 60fps, HDR and it was .... magical, addictive, enthralling. I wish everyone could get to play it.

@jenovaschilld: It doesn't really bother me as i have mostly played games on Gamepass this year but i heard what you are saying for those that care about exclusives. I am looking forward to the next few years with Fable being announced and Avowed from Obsidian though. Both extremely talented studios. The other benefit is they can feed off each other across the board too all being owned by the same corporation. I am sure Obsidian will be lending help to Playground for quest lines for example :)

@chisoxrule: Because it's going to cost them a ton of money for a game that no one is going to buy?

@jadephoenix13: This is exactly why Xbox owners don't have many exclusives. You all buy the exact same games.

@BadAzzOG619: It's a double edged sword. Gamepass Is the best value in gaming providing you aren't hung up on old school exclusive nonsense. It's actually Sony being anti consumer not Microsoft as they are forcing people to buy a console in order to play their games where as with Microsoft it's an option if you want to or you can play them on PC or even streaming devices. Sony needs to get with the program and release on PC day one with any new releases or before too long their strategy will backfire.

At least with Gamepass and Xbox ecosystem you can be at a mate's place and just log in with your profile on a console or PC with Xbox and continue playing where you left off.
