Dragon Age: Inquisition won't have DLC characters because of on-disc controversy

"We've decided this time to not go that route. There will be no DLC party members," BioWare says.

As was rumored, BioWare's upcoming fantasy RPG Dragon Age: Inquisition will not offer new DLC characters, creative director Mike Laidlaw told Official Xbox Magazine. This is because doing so would require them to be on-disc, and BioWare won't do this in the wake of the on-disc controversy that dates back to 2012 and Mass Effect 3.

"Because of how deeply enmeshed in the system companion characters are, we can't just add them on the fly; part of them has to be shipped on the disc," Laidlaw said. "Which has led to criticism that we're forcing people to pay for content they already own. It's not the case, but we've decided this time to not go that route. There will be no DLC party members."

According to former Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski, on-disc DLC is an "ugly truth" for video game development. For various reasons, including compatibility issues, some content does need to be on-disc from day-one, Bleszinski said in 2012. BioWare itself caught flak in 2012 when users discovered that parts of an upcoming Mass Effect 3 expansion were already on-disc from launch day.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will feature nine total party members. Six are known right now: Cassandra Pentaghast, Varric, Vivienne, Sera, Iron Bull, and Solas. It has been rumored that Alistair and the original game's Morrigan could also be featured as playable characters.

Due out this fall, Dragon Age: Inquisition is coming to Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

I never understood how people accept "DLCs" as a norm. Essentially without the fancy words... it is just an unfinished full-priced product, which cost MORE if you want the finished version. That... OR: It is a fraudulently planned and blatantly withheld sinister experience-destroying updates/storyline/skins/mod/patch/bundle of basically more game data which costs more than equal parts of the final product.

Basically unless you keep on paying extra you never get to enjoy 100% of what the title is supposed to be giving you despite you paid FAIR and full priced price for it.

Why don't they just release sequels like in the old days? Oh right.... because people keeps buying DLC as a sign of support for their own daylight wallet robbery scam:). Well good for the big fishes. I guess it's time for the common preys to be fried this time around of the generation..

So if they're already on the disc, why exactly would they not add them in right away? Because it would take them another week or two to finish them and they get more out of it by selling it as day one dlc?

And people are still complaining because now everything would be in the game and they wouldn't have to pay extra for stuff that was developed before the game was released.

And most importantly: why does gamespot keep showing me this extremely weird ad where kids get their faces painted? Are you trying to weird me out?

While some arguments against DLC are valid I think most people live in a life of privilege where dlc is common place. I personally don't have an issue with legitimate DLC, but then again I was raised in the 80's where if I bought Mario Brothers and beat it that was all my game was going to offer me. Today I can buy a game, beat it, and know that down the road dlc may come along that will further my game play rather than just shelving it (hoping for something new to come along).

I don't remember seeing any "Tallis" in the code for DA:2 on disk prior to the news of the DLC with her in it, yet she was a DLC character. I'm calling BS on this one.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Tallis is a temporary companion for the Mark of the Assassin DLC, and only that. She's not there for anything outside of it, so she has no dialogue/banter that ties to what's going on as Javik did (the arguable source of all this). She has no 'resting' spot within the town, or upgrades from the vendors. She came and went.

The Exiled Prince from DA2 however, was DLC, but did have coding for Sebastian on the disc, as he can be recruited outside of his own mini-plot to become a useable party member.

<< LINK REMOVED >> We got everything we would have otherwise. That's the point of the complaints. On Disc-DLC is created at the same time as the rest of the game, and then "locked out" with DLC codes so customers have to pay more for what's already there.

Had they gone this route again, the "extra" characters would have been one or more of Iron Bull, Blackwall, Sera, and/or Vivienne.

I know this article is old, but I'll post this anyway.

"Because of how deeply enmeshed in the system companion characters are, we can't just add them on the fly; part of them has to be shipped on the disc,"

This likely meant that the characters were created during the game's development, but left out.

In other words, that's probably why the DLC characters usually felt like they belonged in the games' stories from the beginning.

I see no reason for not being able to add companion characters after release, aside from them not fitting as well with the story.

However, if that is why, then they shouldn't act like they're adding more companion characters, and they should just not cut the characters from the game in the first place.

Bethesda usually adds companions after their games' releases, and the modders of their games usually add heaps of companions, some of which have reactions to quests, well-written backgrounds and voiced dialogue.

Alas.

What else is there to expect when you are under one of the worst video game publishers?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Because companies need to make money on their games post-release. With the existence of a used-games market, although great for gamers as they are able to get great deals on fairly new games, companies don't gain any profit on used games sales with the current system. An easy way to combat this is with DLC, it adds post-release content for gamers and post-release profit for the developers.

Gamers will always believe that they should be getting all content for their games for free, I mean why wouldn't they after a $60 purchase? It's only natural to believe that you are getting jipped or that companies are cookie-cutting YOUR game just to satisfy their greed. But the harsh truth is that developers need more profit to be able to fulfill the costs of development, salaries, etc. This comes in the shape of DLC and season pass's, folks will always whine about it but the easiest way to express your beliefs is not buy it, rather than taking to the forums.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> This is how the consumerism mind works. How do you get to this point of thinking in the first place anyway? Did you read an article published by a third party related or working together with a game developer or publisher? Do you probably directly have work/associated with any of them? I hope you realise there is another way of thinking here - I'll explain:

Of course companies need to make money, that is the essence of making one in the first place and to keep it in the running. If they hadn't make(or expected to) money they won't be planning/releasing DLCs nor sequels in the first place.

The only time when a studio closes its doors are when they failed to sell enough to par, and that means no DLCs no sequels unless another party bought the IPs. Releasing sequels and DLC already a good sign that they are already quite successful. So they have made some money even without the used-games market.

You're bringing in an outdated or rather invalid point on that used games market. Used games market is similar to this: Imagine a clothing store selling full priced products and those who bought the same items second hand or the following year (after a new model/fashion came out) for half the price/discount.

They are buying it at that lower price either because that is the price point some can afford, or because the price is undeserving anymore as it is an old product still listed at full price, or there is no discount after a certain time when the product's value diminished by time/competition/bad feedback.

Now to Combat this is not by releasing DLC... that is far and totally unrelated... that indirect solution is actually quite a run around and is also quite unfair because the profit generated by DLCs are way more than the profit had they made money from the used-games market.

The proper way to combat this, as with all things called a combat is by directly putting an opposing force to the battlefield, by essentially reducing their price (being fair and realistic, keeping engaged and monitoring/listening).

Had they came up with for example digital cd key download they would not have to share their profit with other third parties distributors while saving cost. There are other ways as well of course... But no some greedy (for obvious reasons) big fishes decide to keep the RRP up as high as possible just hoping that some spoiled rich kid with no prior research/experience, no responsibility or money awareness to buy it at the full price.

Well they might caught a few victims but the real $ is actually in the critical masses by reducing the price to find that sweet spot. In addition to that they forgot to take into account what money can't buy! The Reputation or image that they are projecting! This is why you get people joining bandwagons to hate certain Big Publishers etc... because of its obvious blatant disregard of basic decencies or any corporate responsibilities.

You see, Hollywood, silicon valley, and any other big studios in games/ it/ movie industry.... do they lose money when they actually work on the next installment/version/release/prototype/sequel? If they do not have investors and/or didn't have money as you said... how can they fund the project and pay the staffs salaries... with sequels even.. it is sometimes just reusing the old parts/codes/clips/background story of the prior version... so that should already bring down some of the cost and offset any effort toward pushing the next release into a better product.

The fact is even after a failed title most of them still have some cash to save the boat... or even make lower cost apps for androids/apple... that's the fact.. so they do still have money, some of them just don't know how to be fair.

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but, as far as I know, the retailer buys the games wholesale from the developer/publisher.

Used games don't hinder them from profit.

DLC used to add post-release content, but now it's content that should have been kept in the game during development.

I don't believe that DLC should be free.

I believe that the content that originally should have been in the game should be free.

Developers, or rather, publishers don't need the extra money to be able to make a profit.

They only add it for the sake of extra profit, knowing that customers will buy anything.

Edit: Forgot to say, I don't buy games if I know there is cut/locked content for them, but I post here with the hope of convincing others not to as well.

You probably mean, "Thank you, old gamers and bandwagon trolls."

Modern gamers are the ones that you can thank for on-disc DLC and the array of other dirty schemes that publishers use.

Though, the trolls that jumped on the bandwagon probably shouldn't be thanked as they were probably the ones with the threats.

Thanks video game fans for bitching about another innocuous practice that means we will get less extended content for games we purchase. Like all the bitching about day one patches. Because we'd rather developers stop supporting their games after they've gone gold. Seriously, gamers love shooting themselves in the foot.

I don't care if part of the DLC is on the original game disc. What difference does it make? DLC means they continue supporting the game for a few years after release, I get more content if I want it, and if I don't ... I don't buy it. I know there are DLC haters out there, but no one is forcing them to buy it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> So locking content on a disc....and just making you pay for it months later....is continuing to support their game? It is this mind blowing stupidity that causes DLC and season passes to become so ridiculous in the first place. Developers actually seeing that there are gamers out here with a low enough IQ to actually not even recognize there being ripped off AS THEY DESCRIBE getting ripped off.

<< LINK REMOVED >> because they can make more money by cutting some of the characters out and making us pay for them. That is essentially what they tried to do but they got called out by people who looked into the program on the game and found out a bunch of the stuff they were selling was already there but had been locked from access unless you got the DLC. Consequently this is also why those DLCs download so quickly, the only thing they're downloading is code to access the code that's already there.

**Spoiler Alert**

Good for them. I can still remember Javik the Prothean for ME 3 on day one. Gosh I almost smashed my game disc upon hearing the news. I played the entire game without that character. Turns out I did miss a lot of lore in game without that character and ended up purchasing the DLC for an extra 10 bucks anyway. However, I vowed to myself never to buy any DLC characters for any games and so far haven't bought anything along those lines. Good for Bioware they finally heard out the fans. Make DLC storyline expansions if you want, but ensure all the characters are present in the original game.

It's worth making a differentiation here: some games, such as alice: madness returns, have on-disc DLC that is (almost) entirely on the disc, as such, you can access the entirety of the DLC - all costumes/weapons, the only part not there on all copies is the Alice 1 game, which is understandable as it would significantly bulk up the game install size. It that case, the DLC was 100% ready prior to game release and was in the game code already, such cases are nothing more than charging people for things that they already had from the start, merely hidden away; of course for the PC you can just access it for free without even really having to edit much - literally one line in a unencrypted text document basically. Heck, it's hard to even call it DLC in that case, as there's not really much of a download involved. Capcom's case with 'downloadable' characters being on the discs for all systems yet announced as a PS Vita exclusive is a similar case, they were already there, merely held back for the sake of marketing/charging for them. Of course, it's not normally until a while after the game arrives on PC that these things come clear - by which point it's normally too late to rectify and the backlash commences.

On the other hand, if the only part on the disc is something necessary for compatibility of future add-ons, then it suggests that DLC was planned and production had already begun, but was probably not finished on release day...that is mildly controversial in itself when they charge for it still, but isn't nearly as bad as when the entire thing is finished prior to release. For consoles and other disc-based distribution it could even be argued as necessary quite easily, as has been done.

Of course, whose to say it wasn't finished and they merely held back the parts that could easily be added via DLC downloads? EA (among some other big publisher names) doesn't exactly have a good reputation, and we're all familiar with the way they appear to consistently ask things of their devs that tend to involve making them even more money, one way or another. The real problem here isn't that it's there, it's simply that people don't trust most companies to not hold such things back just to charge them more, regardless of how necessary they may be. DLC is generally associated with MTX as well, which have a bad rep all round, unfortunately mostly for good reasons. In a way, a lot of the reaction comes down to consumer trust in the end - a lack of trust combined with somewhat suspicious occurrences can easily result in a lot of complaints, warranted or not.

Mandatory internet connections for games that simply don't need a net connection to run is somewhat of a big no-no that some companies appear to be pushing as well. Even the fans of the games tend to dislike such things, and understandably so. Even steam doesn't require that you remain online to play such games, nor will it complain in the slightest should net connection be lost, despite relying heavily on it to work properly. Of course, steam is also a well trusted non-intrusive DRM that grants the user additional features, unlike the vast majority of DRM methods. High-speed reliable internet isn't all that widespread yet either - a lot of places are stuck with slow, unreliable net connections, and some places are even stuck with dial-up at best.

This translates to "We've seen how much fan backlash Capcom received from on disc DLC so we decided not to do it". But rest assured that they would of done it again if Capcom wouldn't of fucked up.

EA has their mits all up in Bioware's business and they decide how they will monetize their game(s). I've heard Dragon Age Inquisition will sport multiplayer..that's going to be a "fun endeavour" won't it?

Good, it's a step in the right direction anyway. We can cross that one off the list.

We just have:

- No tacked-on multiplayer or "Inquisition readiness" meter

- No microtransactions

- No mandatory internet connection requirement

left on the list unless there's something else I missed. Hopefully EA have realised that BioWare can't make games as good as Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect if they only have 1.5 years and half their regular team to do it in. Dragon Age II had a lot of missed potential and could have been a lot better if not for that.
