Upcoming slasher-cross-shooter game Shadow Warrior 2 now has a scheduled release date of October 13 for PC, publisher Devolver Digital and developer Flying Wild Hog announced today. A new trailer has also been dropped, which you can watch below.

The game will be available via Steam, GOG, and Humble for $40. Customers who pre-order will get a ten percent discount off the original price and earn the exclusive Razorback chainsaw katana. In addition, owners of Flying Wild Hog's previous games Shadow Warrior and Hard Reset Redux will earn an additional ten percent off the pre-order price as a "thank you for being a ninja from the start."

Shadow Warrior 2 was first announced in 2015. The game is a direct sequel to 2013's Shadow Warrior, which itself was a reimagining of the 1999 game of the same name. Shadow Warrior protagonist Lo Wang has returned for the sequel, which continues the story from the previous game. Shadow Warrior was positively received in GameSpot's review, earning a 7 out 10 for its well-executed humour and high-energy, colourful shooting action.

Earlier this year, we spoke to writer and narrative designer Slawomir Uliasz about the game's comparisons to Doom, the challenges of writing jokes that align with the game's trademark humour, and more.

Technically Wolfenstein was first FPS that really defined the Genre, so, yeah. I mean, in reality the Doom comparison can be said in any form, like Duke 3D, or Wolfenstein. I mean, what separates the three other than the humor anyways.

I didn't play Doom, so can't say if its better than Doom. But, however, it is my runner up for GoTY for 2016 after Deus EX:MD being GoTY.

"Doom like"?! I thought the days of calling FPS games "Doom clones" was over.

Btw, the Shadow Warrior reboot came out three years before the new Doom.

The reboot was great.... and it's a long game, too. Nice addition of some rpg elements. It goes on sale on steam all the time for CRAZY cheap.

can't wait. The original original was fun, then they rebooted it and that was even more fun!

With the addition of coop, this game will be great. I hope it is popular and they offer a lot of added stuff because I can see myself playing it for a while.

@darthrevenx: Doom, Duke Nukem, iD, bethesda, potato potahto. If we really want to get technical, they are both copies of Wolfenstein 3D

@Rifleman22388: no argument there but what made the bigger impact originally?? Wolf 3D or Doom??? Doom made the bigger impact which is why they called the other FPS games Doom clones in the 90's....

@darthrevenx: Yep. The original was basically Duke Nukem, except parodying Hong Kong action films.

The SW reboot WAS what DNF SHOULD HAVE BEEN.

I just really wish this game wasn't infected by this completely lame humor that tries so hard to be funny. Kinda kills it for me. The only game to really get that right is Borderlands, and it's wearing thin even there. Otherwise this looks like good fun.

I loved the humor in the reboot. have no idea what you're on about. Borderlands was annoying as f*ck with chatterbox.

@slappy54: I could've been more clear. It entertained me at first in BL but then got obnoxious and overdone. At least they were creative with the dialogue though. SW just feels like elementary kids trying to smack talk on the play yard. I think it's corny as hell, but hey, if you have fun with it then more power to you.

@ProjektInsanity:

See, the original game has all lowbrow humor, but the reboot didn't. Making Wang a closet nerd and having Hoji take the piss out of him worked wonderfully. Plus, the fortune cookies were hilarious imo. To top it all off, they had a solid story and a somber ending. If you didn't like it, ok. But don't make the claim it was all elementary grade humor when it wasn't.

@slappy54: That's just what it seems to me from the one-liners I've heard. I've never played the series before, so my apologies if my brief impression didn't grasp the whole picture.

@ProjektInsanity: uhh, that was it's history......the original Shadow Warrior in the 90's spawned out of Duke 3D, a one liner spitting kinda Schwarzenegger type character that's what duke was....

Shadow Warrior lo Wang was stereotypical Japanese guy....mispronounce R's and L's, bad humor and the stereotypical Asian accent....the humor was bad but funny......ever see the movie Pray For Death?? SW was like that movie in a lot of ways.....

also i assume you never played Blood & Blood 2? kinda like the Crow, murdered man arises from the grave to kill the cult that killed him....Caleb was a member of the cult pre death but he didn't volunteer to be sacrificed....90's had some way ballsier games than we have now......you could sever heads in Blood and kick em around like soccer balls.....and the blood would fly out of the neck hole......awesome fracking game.....lolz

@darthrevenx: I get that it's part of the game's history, but that doesn't change my feelings about it. It's fine if they leave it in. Hopefully, fans of the series enjoy that kind of thing. I don't. It's cheesy and outdated in the same way that Duke Nukem is a '90s relic. I loved those games at the time, but characters have come a long way since then, even goofier ones. Compare Handsome Jack from Borderlands. Still says a bunch of ridiculous crap, but it's better thought out than just "LOL MY NAME IS WANG." Perhaps that would appeal to me more if I were still 10, I can't say.

The gameplay looks solid, though, and that matters more.

Can we stop with the Doom comparisons please? Anyone familiar with FPS can spot the differences a mile away. Not every shooter to come out after the Doom reboot needs to be compared iD's game.

@slappy54: it's done to draw in the Doom fans. I actually watched a trailer for the first time the other day and my intial thought was "this reminds me of doom because of the fast pace."

The Doom reboot certainly didn't create this type of fps but it's the most recent, successful title to do so. It makes sense that the article would reference doom and not a game that came years ago.

@scottyp360: I agree, and I actually find it useful if they compare to Doom as it hints about what style of gameplay we can expect. Obvously I'd never pre order or trust their word completely. But if a shooter is described with words like Doom, UT or oldschool fps it gains my interest and i can follow up on it. If it is described with words like console shooter, military shooter or COD/BF then I imediately disregard the game and forget about it.

Their first Shadow Warrior was more Doom like, if you watched early gameplay footage they changed things a bit for the second which will have looter-shooter elements and some procedural generation for the level design.

That said it looks like a lot of fun and after playing the first I'm definitely looking forward to it.

@turretx7: They are old scholl FPS sequels/homages and there are demons, that's the only thing both games share. SW is not sci fi, it has combo sword mechanics with powers in a mystical/modern/traditional japanese setting.
