DICE Admits Star Wars Battlefront's Walker Assault Mode Is Unbalanced

"Yeah, it's too tough."

DICE has acknowledged that Star Wars Battlefront's Walker Assault mode is not very well balanced, favoring the Imperials side over the Rebels, and has pledged to address this for the final game.

Writing on Twitter, one fan claimed he never won a Walker Assault match as the Rebel side during the beta. He asked, "Does this mean I suck?" DICE community manager Matthew Everett replied, "Nope! It's a balancing issue within the beta."

Lead multiplayer designer Dennis Brännvall added: "Yeah, it's too tough. We'll make changes based on the feedback and data. Asymmetric modes are tricky and risky but potentially awesome, that's why we want beta test help."

In the 40-player Walker Assault mode, the Rebel side tries to destroy two Empire AT-ATs by securing outposts to call in Y-wing bombers. Empire forces, meanwhile, try to keep the Rebels from activating the command posts. It would appear the Rebels have the tougher job.

DICE has not said how specifically it will change Walker Assault to make it more fair and balanced.

Battlefront's beta ended on October 13; it attracted 9 million players across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, representing the largest beta in EA's history.

In other recent news, EA has announced that Battlefront is getting four expansion packs that you can buy through the game's $50 DLC pass. In addition, three new multiplayer modes have been revealed.

The Battlefront release date is locked in for November 17, about a month before JJ Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens hits theaters. DICE is developing tie-in DLC that will be free for all Battlefront players, but people who preorder will get to play before everyone else.

Did you think Walker Assault was unfair for the Rebel side? Let us know in the comments below.

As much fun as it is to play as the Empire on Hoth, playing as the Rebels is a challenge, but I did have Victories as the Rebels and even in the double-digits. Playing as the Rebels means everyone needs to work harder as a team. When the Walker is "exposed" everyone on the ground and in the sky needs to focus all their fire power on both AT-ATs while also fending off Stormtroopers and Tie Fighters. My biggest complaint about playing as the Rebels is at the final battle ground before the Shield generator, I only came across Snowspeeders, which can be picked off easily by Tie Interceptors. There should be an A-Wing or two available for picking up at that point to help fend off the fast Tie Interceptors.

I enjoyed the challenge and so did my squad mates. we carried the rebel team to victory. of course after awhile empire players began camping the AT-At and AT-ST's and mowed us down =\ regardless, it definitely needs adjustment. for instance the right side walker cannot be taken down with Speeder because the speeder crashes into the mountain...unfair.also, orbital strike pickups for rebels was super rare. another unfair advantage. despite the odds, we would win as rebel often. challenging yet fun. an in-game VOIP would defintley help as well as a BIGGER SQUAD SYSTEM !!!

I don't want it changed - the game mode was great and made playing as the rebels very intense. With a solid team and the "team chat" option on PC we were able to destroy the empire. Only lost 10 games as the rebels... It was so much fun

Also getting the Anti-Vehicle rockets were kind of useless when you were on the Imperial side. Unless they could target the flyers that the rebels had, but its not often they fly so low.

I found the Rebels won pretty easily when I was on a team that didn't play like it was Deathmatch and instead followed the objectives....which was usually never, but still...

The round should end with the shield being destroyed no matter what. There should be more walkers that get progressively more dense, and the objective should be to hold out long enough to get the transport ships away. Then the snow speeders could play a bigger role, and there could be a token that puts you in control of the ion cannon with a mini game to aim at star destroyers. It was still a lot of fun, but they could have the asymmetric gameplay and still be true to the story.

The orbital strikes were the ticket, but most people didn't know that they should save them for when the AT-AT is vulnerable. Also, given the random nature of the pick ups, actually finding an orbital strike is kind of a pain in the ass.

If you had a few good team-mates then it was really easy to win as the rebels. If you save your orbital strikes for the walkers and get people firing those radar dishes them you can take them both down at once. I can see this getting patched post-launch once people get better at playing the game and the rebels are owning every time.

Besides it not being balanced I think the greatest thing I learnt from this game mode is that if I were to play it I'd need to play with a bunch of mates who are organised... More than half my team took the mode as a straight up TDM during the BETA, failing to even do any of the objectives required

It suppose to be tough. When you won as the rebels, it felt good. A win with the imperials was, ok. I was on rebel teams that routinely won the match. Rebels must defend the objective, stray from that, you loose.

In all the matches I think I saw the Rebels win one time, and I was on that team. Every other time it was never even close. Even as a player you can feel a distinct advantage when playing as Imperial. It felt like you were supposed to really pad your stats as an Imperial to make up for your butt getting handed to you as a rebel.

I love when you spawn in the hanger and the outside light blinds you so the imperials just sit outside like a machine gun slaughterhouse and mow helpess blind rebels down lol The lighting effects were very impressive but I was like "oh cmon!"

@climhazard5: it was even better when outside the one hanger opening there is an anti-infantry turret that an imperial would take over and just start laying waste inside the hanger with it. What fun!

I don't think the imperials should be able to operate the turrets at all.

Thanks for the beta, but I will be giving this game a wide berth.

A $90 multiplayer only game with no chat or real p2p interaction no server browser and no lobby just is not worth wasting time on.

i think its about the players most of the time. i was in matches where victory is granted either iam on rebel or imperial side.(same teammates). On the other hand, some other matches you had the walker exposed and no one is shooting at that dam thing. someone should point out the fact that walker assault is not a deathmatch mode.

Yeah, how about they are just trying to last to the appropriate time limit, at which point the transports escape. HELLO!!!! They shouldn't even be trying to stop the Imperial invasion of AT-ATs.

Essentially it is what we call in military parlance as a "delaying action".

Let's be honest, crying about a beta test for being unbalanced Is pretty daft, as we only have a small sample of weapons, abilities and unlocks to use, some of which, In the full game, will probably have a huge Impact on certain game modes.

Secondly, If all the people that cried "unbalanced", spent time playing and learning the game, Instead of kicking off on various forums after getting stomped In their very first game, they would discover that winning as the Rebels Is not only achievable, but enjoyable!, If you; and a few other Rebel players, know what to do.

Yes, I got a bit frustrated and found the Rebel side a bit rough on the first day of beta, but by the next night, after experimenting with tactics, abilities and picking up on the Imperial players sometimes predictable behavior, I found myself winning as the Rebels considerably more often.

Sorry to rant, but all this unbalanced talk Is a huge exaggeration, It's making the mode sound like It's literally Impossible for the Rebels to win at all!, which Is NOT the case.

@Bray209: "Unbalanced" does not mean, "impossible". The way the map is set up, it's basically the Imperials game to lose. They immediately hit the field with much more firepower and the rebels have nothing to counter it. You can hop in an AT-AT can easily rack up 20-30 kills while being invincible. One good push and you'll have AT-STs sitting at your spawn points while the Imperials hijack your turrets.

The rebels have to work much, much harder for a win than the Imperials do.

You think? When you start at the Imperial side you have all kinds of abilities lying around, from TIE fighters to AT-ST and AT-AT and so on and so on. On the Rebel side theres NOTHING, absolutely nothing. If you want to get any pick ups you gotta walk a long way and you prolly get shot by then.

well it was unbalanced i agree. But I'm wondering when people rank up and unlock better cards if it would not balance itself out. Because better gear probably means >damage on walkers.

People complaining that playing as the rebels in walker assault mode was too hard, I'm sorry but did anyone else watch the fucking movies? AT-AT's are not meant to be balanced they are meant to **** up anything that gets in their way, unstoppable and demoralizing. Only good teams should be able to stop them.

It's just weird that being on the rebel side requires a lot of team work...but then there is no chat system and you can only partner with one person, so it doesn't give you a lot of options to work as a team.

im thinking fewer/weaker at st's or weaker at at's. also the turrets need some work. you can get huge kill streaks in those things. imperials just have too many options to wreck rebels atm.

The main complaint I have was the rebel spawning was broken. Literally as the empire you could go behind their spawn and just shoot rebels as they spawned. That and the spawning on aerial vehicles you spend way to long coming in without control of the aircraft.

I saw REBELS win... 1 out of 10 times. It really takes a concerted effort and air power. So when people give up or just want to look for power-ups it quickly falls apart. But there is a balancing issue too. An AT-AT on the final part open snowscape is brutal. I could just wipe people out easily. With the same teams I could go from being a Rebel and go 5:20 kills/death and next level as Empire 30:5. There are tons of hackers too. So irritating to shoot somebody 20 times and they just turned around and one-shot you.

I actually like the balance. Just hang around for the next level and you can switch sides with the same people pretty much. It didn't bother me much. I looked forward to the "PAY BACK" if it went bad as a Rebel.

@scifi3dzoo: I concur on the hackers. There were A LOT. But I would imagine this was because it was a free beta anyone could sign up for an origin account, cheat, get banned rinse repeat. Once you have to actually pay $60 for the game this shouldn't be as rampant, i would hope.

There's two simple tactics to winning, but players not knowing what they're doing complicate them.

1.) Save your orbital bombardments (if you can get your hands on some) for the AT-ATs and strike them when Y-Wings swoop through. Slow moving targets guarantee hits, and it does quite a lot of damage. Unfortunately, people tend to solely focus on using these for 1-2 kills, wasting their potential.

2.) Have GOOD pilots in the air that lay waste to the AT-ATs after the Y-Wings swoop in. Unfortunately, this one's tough, as - like every Battlefield game - you've got people who simply wait for vehicle markers to spawn. They don't really play the game otherwise, and they GENERALLY don't know what they're doing.

So yeah, it's unbalanced, but only because the majority of players are incompetent when it comes to the objective.

Someone raised a good point below: this is a beta. We didn't have rocket launchers and all that other weaponry. That alone should make the regular game much easier. As it is, using the dish turrets and power ups are enough to bring down the walkers, but for some reason, nobody uses them.

Granted, I'm sure other people will eventually figure out what I did as Empire: grab a dish turret and use it to destroy the OTHER turrets scattering the battlefield. Completely cripples the rebels in that regard.

Is the Walker Assault the only game type/ map of that variety in the game?

Is everything else except that one Hoth map just BattleFronts version of Capture & Hold, Capture the Flag, Death Match, etc.?

I was in some games as the Rebels where we just straight up annihilated the empire. Though more often than not it seemed harder to win as the Rebel side.

I was okay with it... I think they shouldn't be too quick change things... since further play might prove that things arent as one sided as people believe.

PS. Anyone else have trouble making anything happen in the sky... ie: A-Wings, Tie Fighters, X-Wings, etc?

I never lasted long.... sucked at dog fighting.... would get 1 pass at the field of battle at best.

It was a little unbalanced no doubt. But with a good rebel team, orbital strikes, protecting the uplinks, airspeeder takedowns and focusing all fire on the AT-AT it became much more balanced. The problem was finding a competent team that didn't care about their K/D in a beta where stats don't even transfer over.
