Diablo dev's disappointment sparks disdain from Diablo III team

David Brevik disapproves of changes to third entry in Blizzard action role-playing series, prompting current employees to get personal in public Facebook post.

Despite Diablo III's commercial and critical success, the action role-playing game has attracted criticism for losing focus on what some felt made the series unique. Notable among its critics is David Brevik, who co-founded Diablo creator Blizzard North and left the studio in 2003 to form Flagship Games. Brevik explained some of his issues with the game, created by Blizzard's main studio in Irvine, California, in an interview with IncGamers.

It's all a bit disapproving-dad-and-rebellious-teenager.
It's all a bit disapproving-dad-and-rebellious-teenager.

"When Blizzard North shut down they lost a ton of experience with why the Action RPG works and what about it works. That's really difficult to recover from," Brevik said. He listed several changes, such as a greater focus on narrative, modifications to the loot system, and the implementation of an auction house as alterations that reflected differing priorities. He said those priorities did not always line up with what fans wanted from the next Diablo.

"I am sad because people are outraged and, you know, some of the decisions they have made are not the decisions I would make…" Brevik said. "I am also a little happy, which I hate to say. It shows that the people that were involved in Diablo really did matter, and so I am happy that it has come to light how talented that group was and how unique and special that group was."

Some current Blizzard employees were displeased by the interview, taking to a public Facebook post to commiserate about Brevik's comments. While many of the comments have since been deleted, Kotaku has posted a screen capture of their initial reaction. Andrew Silvernail, who was credited in Diablo III, pointed out that Brevik's first project after Blizzard was the unevenly received Hellgate: London. Diablo III lead designer Jay Wilson was more direct, saying, "F*** that loser."

GameSpot requested comment on the exchange from Blizzard, but did not receive a response as of press time. Beyond his decrying of the Diablo founder, Wilson today announced a patch for the game that adds 100 post-cap "Paragon Levels" to increase end-game progression and address issues with the game's loot.

It's so easy to be the guy on the outside looking in and say "you suck, I would have done it this way". I just don't understand this practice of taking developers and making faceless villans out of them. These D3 people are all people with friends, spouses, families, etc trying to do a job. None of these people set out to purposely destroy the franchise. If all they cared about was money and had no love for games, then they would be in another line of work because game development is risky, has long hours, and is generally unappreciated. TBH honest if I had just spent years of my life working long hours on a project and then had someone crap all over it, my first knee-jerk reaction would probably be F* You as well.

@marcusmattingly so u are saying u cant judge them, or criticize their work, cause.. being a game developer is too hard? they are buried in money, n still all they care is about making more (even if that means turning things into crap) i could def stand up for some other developer teams.. (good teams that seek balance between making money and please the fans) but not this one, they sucked at everything, even at having some respect towards the original creators of this franchise.. thats really low.. cause everything that brevik said was true.. and didnt harmed anybody.. plus u can judge any1 as a consumer.. you are buying a service/product.. and if it sucks.. u should complain, or say whatever u want to say..

@d4rkscourge If you think game developers, the guys in the trenches doing the work, are buried in money then you are mistaken. I am a software developer, business stuff not games, and I would have to take a substantial salary cut to be a game developer. That doesn't even account for the insane hours they work, especially near release. All I was saying is to choose that direction, requires a love of games. They are not all about the money as many like to think.

@marcusmattingly its so funny how some ppl try to defend the indefensible.. lol like if this game was a master piece.. or like if the developers were soo awesome that u could be proud about them.. it just make no sense to me.. u must really like to mindlessly farm 4 gold over n over again, just to buy crappy items on that shitty store, over and over again, i can see there is a lot of merit on that lol it test ur dumbness lol or maybe u enjoy wasting ur real money on some stupid virtual items that look all the same.. still trying to figure it out lol why?..

@d4rkscourge I never said the game was a masterpiece, ever. It certainly has its flaws. All I was saying is these guys are not the devil, they are people, and I can understand how they would go on the defensive when they are getting assaulted from all sides.

@marcusmattingly i never said the guys were the devil neither or anything like it, i just dont understand why ppl like u say good things about them, when they are basically fucking every1 in the ass, including u.. all the things ive said b4, are based on facts, and things that most ppl think, u only need to look around on the comments to notice that.. plus i think something must have happened, if everybody has bad things to say towards wilson, and his team.. i never seen this happen on any other "flawed game".. u should think about that.. the guy, the team... they just used a name, to ensure sells without backing that up after the release, letting down millions of ppl.. 10 years to make this crap? i think i dont need to add more about this.. it is clear as water..

@d4rkscourge Some of the comments I have seen have been pretty nasty is all I am saying. Saying someone only cares about money and is purposely screwing consumers is not just criticism of a game, it's an attack on someones character. If you laid down $60 bucks without knowing what you were getting and feel like you need to blame someone, then how about blaming yourself? I for one knew about these controversial features issues like always connected and the real money auction house well before I put my money down. There were articles, beta tests, gameplay videos. How could anyone have bought this game without knowing what it was like? Yet it sold a gazillion copies.

@marcusmattingly oh and about laying down the 60 bucks, well maybe u didn't played the other 2 diablos.. but i did, as soon as they came out...so i was expecting to get the same formula with which the game gained that capital D "Diablo" name, maybe u didn't knew what to expect but i did.. i did saw everything u were saying (haven't played any beta thou), still nothing describes the game better than playing it.. so i had hopes, i had to buy the game that ive been waiting for 10 years, like happened with SC2 (which wasn't a letdown at all).. lol so u are actually blaming me for making the mistake of having faith and expecting good things from one of the greatest companies of gaming??, are u stupid or what? don't u know the same thing happened to thousands+ ppl, not just me. they didn't purposely ruined the game no, but do they purposely screw with all the customers? HELL ya, 1 word/4 letters = RMAH...i wont tell u all the shitty stuff it has cause it already making me wanna puke right-now, but ill just add this, they did sold "gazillion" copies, SADLY just cause they used that hard earned diablo name, to label a game which could be called any other way, and no one would notice that this were meant to be diablo 3, that = millions of ppl buying the game without blinking, just cause they read "diablo 3" so, over and out man, this already got old.. but i had to answer that thing about the 60bucks... was a spine on my back.. hahaha :P cheers

Diablo 3 is a flop. The only reason it sold so well was because of hype; everyone assumed it would live up to whatever was hoping it would be. Blizzard usually has a good track record so no one thought about it and everyone just bought the game right away. Look how many people now, who bought the game, that are still playing it. Me and everyone I know stopped playing it months ago. I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of other people who agree. Blizzard got drunk off of WoW and they're main focus is reinforcing gear grinding in Diablo 3 and profiting off of it with a real-money auction house (which, insanely enough, people are actually using). Bad game from a bad team, and I'm glad someone who set the standard is telling the truth.

@rann89 The way a game plays can be attributed more to the designers than the artists, engineers , and animators, Rann. Be reasonable. Because one overseas Marine might rape a local island girl, doesn't mean every Marine is a rapist.

Jay Wilson has apologized for his "unprofessional" Facebook coment (it's in the official D3 forums IIRC). He also said he had higher expectations of himself than posting that kind of thing.

@fedejico He only apologized because he has to in order to make the company look good. He already let slip how immature he is, and also how angry he is. There are some things you just can't take back, especially when everyone knows you're only taking it back for PR reasons.

@rann89

It's hard to believe his post was pure PR. He said many a thing that was very personal and he sounded darn sincere.

What I do know (and I'm not saying this is anyone's case) is that there's an amusingly high amount of people using the first excuse at hand to bash Diablo. They read about Diablo, post about Diablo, lurk in D3 forums, but no, they just don't play Diablo because it sucks.

Sure.

The ego of Diablo 3 crew is just appalling. They really need to admit the only reason Diablo 3 sold as many is because of name recognition only. Madden sells millions of copies every year but doesn't mean Madden is a good game.

Diablo 3 sucked..story blew, and they put too much effort into the auction house and not enough into the game/items.. Thankfully Wilson's crew didn't touch Diablo 2...because I STILL play that.. I haven't played Diablo 3 since the patch..but it doesn't matter..too busy on my old game... I will say, they needed an open trading spot in Diablo 3 thanks to the prescence of third party trade sites/itemsites etc (d2jsp.org , lewt.com etc.) But they did a better job on the auction houses than the actual game...

I gave up on hope for D3 like 6 months prior to it's release..was hyped..then said ya know what? been how many years in development..and it looks more like WoW than diablo..so whatever..BTW Mr.Wilson? I returned my diablo 3 case back to walmart..no cd key included.. ,.|..

Even after the patch that made the Elites more manageable, this is still a shitty game. I'm stuck in inferno, where I have to fight the butcher. After downing his health to 35%, the whole place always lit on fire. How the hell am I suppose to kill him then?

Am I suppose to farm for a very long time until my gear is good enough? What kind of stupid game is that, where you have to wait for gears in order to take down the boss?

David Brevik should come back to Blizzard, and Jay Wilson along with the new crew should be fired.

It isn't really that hard to beat the Butcher in Inferno, and doesn't take long to get proper items. But, it does take a certain level of competency and skill.

Since you asked: "After downing his health to 35%, the whole place always lit on fire. How the hell am I suppose to kill him then?"

One way: kill him faster.

Another way: run to the bottom of the area, in the center - the fire won't hurt you there.

Another way: save up better gear.

Another way: use appropriate cool downs to avoid the fire.

Gotta get some skill, man, Butcher on Inferno is not that hard.

Diablo 3 is a great game.

Brevik is right - and even if he wasn't he expressed his opinion in a polite fashion with respect to the people who made Diablo and the legendary team of devs who were scattered when Blizz North shut down.Wilson's comment does nothing but empasize the truth of Brevik's words.

I was on the side of the D3 developers, its sour grapes to bash something because you dont think you get enough credit. Then two and a half hours ago i tried to log in and got an error. It still isnt fixed and blizzard has no eta. Its not the game balancing issues that I have a problem with, they will patch those and the last patch adding paragon levels was a big change....but the endless bugs, the error messages, the awful launch....this game was put out earlier than it should have been. We all wanted d3, but i would rather have waited a few more months for a more polished release with none of these crippling bugs.

If someone told me I was not talented and the game I spent years of hard work making sucks I would be pissed too.

D3 has gotten A-LOT better with all the fixes and the recent patch. Itemization still needs work but overall it is a good game and a good time.

Jay Wilson shows why he failed with D3 with stupid his no class remark. You can't deny the RMAH was a fail idea, major fail. D3 had years, a decade to surpass D2 and its a joke what they were able to come up with considering the time and money they had.

@Runock @trueepower44 Really? "Trolls?" Do you not know what that means are do you just think everyone who dislikes what you like is a troll? The game is an awful excuse of an entry in the Diablo franchise. I wouldn't care if it was it's own IP, but to do that to a series I knew and loved is just unforgivable. The game is mediocre at best, and it looks awful. That should not describe a Diablo game.

I'm now wondering if D3 was as bad as it was because of Activision's interference or because it lost some of its most important creative talent from the first two games, leaving a bunch of immature, overgrown kids to develop it.

This soap opera makes me sad. I had good time up to killing end boss on inferno and that was that. Spent more time in this game compared to many others, I got my moneys worth. This "death dance" never stops to amaze me. Move on, let it go, you sold millions of copies, be content, sell us an expansion, something new, this patient is dead.

Alright kids, lets get one thing straight.....

When diablo 2 came out, all the diablo 1 fanboys came crying out the gate saying, "This game is trash compared to d1!! Way to ruin my favorite franchise you dumbasses!!" And here we are yet again, d2 fans coming out of the woodworks singing the same song and dance as before.

Its called evolution people. I acknowledge d3 isnt perfect, but neither was d2 or d1 for that matter. I have over 120 hours into d3, have my lvl.60 and completed acts 1-4 on inferno, havent spent a dime in the RMAH, and I STILL love playing this game. Realize its going to be SEVERAL patches till all the kinks are worked out. (ahem* like the others)

So please, do yourself a favor and grow up. Learn to embrace this truly solid game. Or dont, and hang on to your shitty disposition.

I enjoyed D1, and D2 immensly..(I still play D2) Calling this game "Evolution" is a pure joke..the graphics are that of WoW... Ever hear of something called Direct X? well..Diablo 3 runs on Direct X 9 graphics..current gen of Direct X? Direct X 11.1..The storyline was garbage...totally horrible..They even dug up Diablo 1's storyline and toyed with that and twisted it around aswell...Seriously? Even the Male barbarian that has returned from diablo 2's story of 20 years past? He doesn't even know who Cain is or what he is about? (and yeh..Cain's death was as lame as a legless horse..)

Well you have revealed a few things to me about yourself.

1. Apparently graphics matter to you, one of the most UNIMPORTANT things that make a game good.

2. You have no idea what the word evolution means. It means any change across successive generations in the inherited characteristics of all things. Not a personal opinion of improvement.

3. You care about that stupid ass character deckard cain. I hated him in general for overall lameness.

Besides, story only goes so far. If D2 had a great story but its gameplay was poor, It wouldnt have taken you as far as it has. D3 smokes D2 in gameplay. If you dont like the frame the gameplay has been put in, Thats another issue and i can understand your frustration more. But the facts are, it IS the evolution of the Diablo franchise. And it IS a fun game to play. Come on man, your comparing fruits and vegetables. They are different, but both delicious to eat

If graphics matter to me? Why am I devout to diablo 2 still? If evolution means taking a game that could have been applied as an expansion to world of warcraft and slapping the Diablo name it? Then thank god or whatever I still have only 5 digits per hand/foot.As for Cain.. I don't care as much about him as I do the part they didn't keep a main character's storyline from previous games in check.Lastly..gameplay? You're kidding right? I can't even play through it twice..it's the same thing..wash rinse repeat every single character..build up a resource. use secondary attack..done deal. (even a wizard can use a high dps axe/sword/pillow/frying pan and cast a high damage attack...just an idea of where I'm coming from)

@MeestaPleasta d1 was a work of art, a true masterpiece. d2 was also great, more sporty in way, much more action, loot and content, not nearly as atmospheric as d1 but still unparalleled in its genre.

d3 is just, as you put it, a solid game... i guess we expected some trademark blizzard magic but they failed to deliver..

people feel when a game is made with great inspiration for the purpose of impressing them, or when its made primarily for achieving profit. same story with the film and music industry....

Maybe your expectations were to high... almost, dare I say, unattainable. You said it best yourslef with the music industry. Ill use the band Tool as an example. Aenima was a masterpeice, a true work of art. So as you can imagine everyone expected Lateralus to even better than before. Well... it wasn't. And i remember fans saying "what is this shit!?" Ive learned that when you go into something with absolutley zero expectations, its much harder to be let down if at all. Look at GTAIV for another prime example.

The Blizz trademark magic is there, your just looking at it from the wrong perspective. I appreciate your mature response though! Its refreshing to hear instead of a, "**** DIABLO III, BLIZZARD AND JAY WILSON" baseless rant. People just need to take their damn nostalgia goggles off and enjoy a new, fresh experiance. ^_^

@MeestaPleasta @bambrek Oh left out my key assessment... Diablo 3 was aimmed towards the "WoW" crowd and simplified "COD" players. From the start you had the training wheels on. A goofy UI and a story that made me skip over it because it was so f'ing boring.I'm sorry to burst anyone's bubble but, I was completely disappointed with D3. I honestly can't believe I bought it after I played the Beta. I kept thinking... Its the Beta, its going to get better... right? WRONG.

Sigh... the days of good games getting produced is over. What happened to the good ole days... Diablo 1, Diablo 2, Warcraft 2, Starcraft... we all traded that in for sparkly graphics and games that you can just play within 15 mins.

Maybe I'm getting too old.

I have no interest in playin anymore i hit level 60 and just stoped, they did not put any thought into this game. They should not have added the auction house at all due to the fact that everyone gets real greedy and sells the good stuff for unreasonable prices. They just screwed up on the game period. I did find one good use for it a coaster for my mug when i drink coffee or any other drink.

I hate to jump on the Blizzard hate wagon here because I've really enjoyed things they've done. Warcraft 2 & 3, WoW Vanilla & TBC, D2, SC/2. To me, I think the company might be passed its prime. Diablo 3 just didn't hold my interest. Am I the only one who felt the act progression and design was ridiculously similar to D2? The cinematic scenes were great but the story was completely forgettable. For a game with so much anticipation it just didn't hold my interest. I beat it three times and couldn't see myself sticking with it to farm. If I were to do that, I should have stuck with WoW and at least had a more dynamic multiplayer experience. People compare it to WoW but I say it's like WoW Lite. There's no incentive here to keep going. Unfortunately, I was a real sucker and signed up for the year long WoW subscription, got D3 free but have only played two months of my subscription. I can't blame Blizzard. I ripped myself off. I wish I could just get the money back and buy something else. After Cataclysm and the perpetual added lack of challenge in WoW, that game is no longer an interest to me. Diablo 3 is boring. I really wanted to love it. I even told myself I loved it while playing it. It just didn't satisfy, sorry. The comment by Wilson just seems like childish misplaced frustration. I know he apologized on the forums but he ought to apologize to Brevik -- I certainly don't give a shit about being apologized to. I mean, apologize for taking my money and putting me through your beta test. Offer me money back. But save your apologies for the people you've insulted.

@bruno321 i dont even think its the "past their prime" thing. i just think they sold out. and now they have to feed the ALWAYS HUNGRY corporation they are part of.

you cant produce art with 99% of your motivation being the profit it will achieve. it just.... doesnt work that way..

I agree with you on the hype of D3 and I am going to wait for those post release reviews or see if there is any in game videos before buying. Most the games that was released within two years did not live up to the hype.

In some aspects I agree with Brevik's statement. The AH(Auction House) in the beginning stages of development should have been done like a voting process among it's customers first to see if there is any opposition to it.. Jay Wilson remarks was uncalled for and childish. I like D3, but it is no game of the year.

Wilson's version of Diablo wouldn't have sold much at all if not for Brevik's work.

Wilson is damn lucky he has nude photos of someone high up at Blizzard nude. He must, how else can they justify this man not having been fired? The game is terrible, this remark is unprofessional, yet he is retained by Blizzard.

Jay Wilson really had no idea how to build this game. The game is a complete mess. The loot system is terrible, the monsters are either too easy or ridiculously cheap, the quests are generic and completely forgettable, there's no plot, or story, or quest that is class specific, the class specific gear usually sucks.

The game is just garbage.

The simple fact that it was IMPOSSIBLE to find a random drop to increase your characters stats makes it unplayable. Why do slot machines work? Because from time to time they reward you.
