Diablo 3 Really Is Coming To Nintendo Switch, According To A New Report

Would you play Diablo on Switch?

Last week, Diablo fans got excited when the game's publisher, Blizzard, appeared to hint that a version of the game would be coming to Nintendo Switch. The company later quashed the rumors by saying, "We can assure you we're not that clever." Now, a new report claims the long-running action-RPG series is coming to Nintendo's hybrid console after all.

Eurogamer says its sources have informed the site that yes, Diablo is coming to Switch--specifically, it will be a port of Diablo III that makes its way to the device. The report does not state whether Diablo III's Reaper of Souls and Rise of the Necromancer expansions would be included in the port and does not mention a release date. An official announcement is still months away, the site says.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Diablo 3 For Nintendo Switch Is Real, According To A New Report

The news comes as something of a surprise after Blizzard said last week that the tweet--which showed a Diablo-themed light being switched on and off--was "meant to be a fun community engagement piece" and that the company has "nothing to announce" regarding the series coming to Switch.

Diablo III originally launched for PC in 2012. It was later released for PS3 and Xbox 360, before being ported to PS4 and Xbox One in 2014. However, Blizzard hasn't released any games for a Nintendo platform since it brought Starcraft to the Nintendo 64 in 2000. People also want to see Blizzard's Overwatch come to Switch, but game director Jeff Kaplan says that's unlikely (although not impossible).

Maybe a new view system will be available on the switch version, its been done before on GBA, it didn't work very well but still it was addressed.

Having played a vita and the likes of most wanted on it, it can be challenging from a visual perspective at times, so if this works i welcome it.

I like the idea but I really hope it has adhoc. I would love to play d3 on a plane with my wife, but sharing that tiny screen is ridiculous.

@JTWrenn: it could be worse, it could be a ds or vita screen !!!

Maybe the screen thing can be addressed as it was in some gba conversions like Earth worm Jim or sonic (both never worked, but you'd like to think Nintendo have moved on by now and it can)

It's just such a huge step down from Diablo 2. I'll pay good money for a quality Diablo 2 port to Switch.

@og_gamerzzz: Whatever. First, it's Nintendo has no 3rd party devs. Now that they're really making awesome progress on that front, it's "dated gimmicks".

The Switch rules, and all the salt in the world won't change that.

@og_gamerzzz: To be fair, it's not Nintendo's doing, it's a 3rd party putting their game on the console.

To everyone else... It's a great game if you've never played it and isn't graphics intensive (except the few pre-rendered cut scenes. It has a far off camera view so may not be great in portable mode. I think they're porting it because they are starting another season.

One thing I don't understand about Nintendo is that phones are up to 4K screens (which is unnecessary on a small display), but they've had 1080p screens for around a decade. Is it too much to ask for a full HD screen? Phones last a good while playing 1080 games, so why wouldn't Nintendo use a better screen?

They seem to cut corners in areas people care about that wouldn't impact the price or performance that much.

Not interested personally, but cool I guess. It's not really a portable-friendly game, I've played it extensively already, and unless they let you set how close or how far away the camera is... it's not a particularly befitting game for a smaller screen. If Overwatch on Switch isn't going to be a thing, this is the only other game that would make sense to do.

I played the PC version and quickly regretted it. The always online and auction house kinda broke it for me. (I'm sure it didn't for the majority, but it sure impacted my feeling of finding loot especially knowing you could buy extremely good stuff for relatively little gold.)

I hear the console versions play surprisingly well with the added dodgeroll. So if it comes to Switch I might try it again.

I think the point that a lot of people are missing with the Switch is portability.

I used to not be able to play games at work. Now I can play Skyrim, Diablo3, Dark Souls, Bayonetta; so yea, I'm happy with my Switch.

I will say, though, that the Switch is more of a compliment than a primary gaming console. When I'm at home I play my PS4.

@joejoe1639: "I used to not be able to play games at work" Good to know that instead of working you are playing games - I would fire your ass if you were my employee.

@Gbullet: When you have a real skill, you leave bosses like that behind and it’s as simple as “you cost X to employ, you generate Y in revenue, and if Y>X you get to keep your job”. If you run a register or empty trash cans for a living, you have to eat shit. Just the way of the world.

@Gbullet: So, I take it you've never worked a desk job as a technical specialist. I'm a Programmer/Analyst; I get my work done and do it well, but I'm fast and efficient, so I have a decent amount of downtime. I also would be very difficult to replace in my role, so as long as my work is getting done my bosses are too smart to fire me over something trivial.

I also don't do busy work; my downtime was usually earmarked for messing around in crappy comment sections, but now I can also do some gaming. Switch is awesome.

@Gbullet: I used to work for a call center that did directory assistance. We had a lot of downtime during calls, so our manager let us read, watch movies, play games, crotchet, whatever, provided that our quality and speed didn't suffer as as a result. The manager before him was fired because she couldn't get her call center numbers up; she was a hardass micromanager... If I were your employee, I'd quit long before you'd want to fire me.

@og_gamerzzz: It may not make sense to you but it obviously does to a lot people. Retro gaming has been huge for awhile now and not everyone has a problem going back to older graphics. Games have looked good for a long time. I can understand Atari 2600 being crappy but hell, I will play most anything original NES to the present. I like them all. Portability is making the difference and on the systems smaller screen games are very nice looking and very playable.

@mariokart64fan: Because Xbox and PS4 have more than a couple of exclusives unlike the switch who has the same Mario Kart since the wii. Not to mention other crap games they've been pushing since wii

@customx5: The switch have some of the best exclusives of all the consoles at the moment. Not sure what planet you are from but Mario Cart, Mario Odyssey and Zelda are proper triple A titles. May I remind you Zelda won GOTY on this and many other game sites with Super Mario Odyssey a very close second and that was all within its first year of release.

@kljvoph: I'm on a planet which doesn't revolve around Mario games and other recycled junk on Nintendo

Yes Zelda and Mario Kart are good, but they are not new games, they're been around since Wii U. I would like Nintendo to actually make NEW titles instead of the same old recycled crap.

@customx5: Because CoD games, God of War, Halo and Gears games are all "new" games, right?

I love all the salt against Switch, it's adorable.

@og_gamerzzz: They are modern games. It is you, sir that need to broaden your horizon. More to the point, they are fun and games are supposed to be fun. I play games on all the current platforms including Xbox, Ps4, PC and Switch so I do not need further exposure to 'modern' games as you call it.

@mariokart64fan: ps4 was getting old ports AND new AAA 3rd party games AND exclusive 1st party games ALL AT THE SAME TIME. big difference.

switch on the other hand is getting good 1st party support; some new releases, but many old remasters... that's fine. switch is also getting pretty good indi support. but when it comes to AAA 3rd party support, there are NO new releases whatsoever. they simply don't exist on the switch. it is just 5+ year old ports when it comes to AAA games from 3rd party studios and that is pretty sad indeed.

@Xristophoros: The problem is that a lot of games have multi-year development cycles and game engines have multiple game releases per iteration. If you're a year or two into your multi-year project when the Switch comes out... do you deviate and invest in a Switch port while trying to maintain the same target deadline to please asshole stockholders so you can get it out during its first year where you don't even know if people are going to fucking buy the thing or not (especially coming off of the lack of performance that the Wii U had at retail), or do you save it for something new in development? Do you invest in making a Switch version of your engine when its on its last legs and you're working on a new iteration? Smart business says no unless you're willing to take a risk... and frankly with the games that have been coming out the last few years, risk-taking doesn't seem to be on the agenda of most companies.

For me, that's why year one isn't such a massive deal for third party support and that's why it's so important for Nintendo to churn out a steady stream of games to support themselves, both new and ported. They release a staggering amount of games and at the quality most of them are, **** me do they work hard on the software end.
