Destiny 2: "I Hope People Complain About How Much Story We Have"

"We're learning from and listening to all the feedback we got on Destiny 1, and we're applying it."

One of the most heavily criticised elements of Destiny was its story, and that's nothing new for Bungie games, as people didn't always love Halo's story, either. Now, senior narrative lead Jason Harris and cinematic lead Matthew Ward have talked about how the story for Destiny 2 will be more of a focus compared to the original.

"Destiny 1 in a way was foundational," Ward told IGN. "It was meant to set up the world and ask a lot of questions, but not necessarily deliver too many answers. But leave enough out there for us to build upon."

Now Playing: Destiny 2 – Official Open Beta Launch Trailer

Destiny 1's DLC, including House of Wolves, Rise of Iron, and Taken King did not focus much on the mysterious Traveler, but Destiny 2 will, Ward said. While he didn't give away any specific details, he and Harris promised Destiny 2 will have a lot of story baked into it, so much that fans might take issue with how much story there is.

"We're learning from and listening to all the feedback we got on Destiny 1, and we're applying it," Ward said. "I hope people complain about how much story we have. That'd be the Reddit thread I'd like to read. 'Too much damn story [makes angry typing gesture].'"

No Caption Provided

Harris said in the interview that Bungie "spent a lot of time" world-building for the Destiny franchise overall. He added, "I can't emphasize enough that we are now ready to tell stories in this world. Big, expansive, cinematic stories."

"I think players are ultimately going to see a wide variety of story channels, an eclectic number of outlets to see story infused throughout the game; top to bottom, soup to nuts. There is story everywhere," he said.

Destiny 2's beta starts on July 18 for PS4 and July 19 for Xbox One, first for people who pre-order the game. It then opens up to everyone on July 21, wrapping up on July 23. The beta will be available on PC later.

The beta lets you try the opening story mission, called Homecoming, as well as the Inverted Spire Strike mission. In Crucible, you can try two modes, Control and Countdown. Additionally, the new social space, The Farm, will be playable for a period of time.

Some services won't be online yet, however. The beta won't support Destiny 2's Clan features, character progression won't be representative of the final game, and characters will be wiped before the game is released. If you participate in the beta, you will get a special emblem.

The full version of Destiny 2 launches in September for PS4 and Xbox One, with a release on PC to come in October.

Recently, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said Destiny 1 didn't release content fast enough to meet players' expectations. To address this, Activision is bringing in more studios to work alongside Bungie on Destiny 2.

I literally LOL'd. That's like you messing up and saying " I meant to do that".

They know people are going to be much more cautious about Destiny 2 after the reputation Destiny 1 has.

Well, here's hoping that they know the difference between "more dialogue" and "more story". I'm willing to give it at try, but fool me twice...

And to say that they intentionally skimped on the story? Yea, sure, whatever... I don't buy it and think those folks changed directions so many times for D1 that... Ah, never mind.

We shall see what we shall see...

They "held back story". In other words they intentionally made the first one boring. You know, this makes me want to full on boycott bungie. If they would just come out and say, "yes we dropped the ball with Destiny and we're very sorry. We've seen how disappointed our customers are and have worked hard to give them what they want this time" I'd call it good and give them another shot. But to take all the fan outrage at being blatantly screwed out of a decent experience and just say they meant to do it? Talk about balls. I hope the second one is fantastic in every way, and no one buys it. I'd love to pick it up in a bargain bin for $5 four months after release.

They both sound like utter idiots. I have massive doubts they are capable of writing and directing a decent story.

I never invested enough into the first game to even consider getting into this one. Anthem is your doom Bungie. Keep up the exclusive deals! I guess your loyal fans meant jack shit to you.

@obsidian_born: Anthem just looks really good. Just like how Destiny 1 looked really good before people played it and saw there was nothing to do. Bioware has been sucking ass recently anyways.

@obsidian_born: You reeeally think that BioWare, an RPG developer whose been a little iffy lately, can make a shooter that plays better than a game built by the folks who made Halo? Anthem might be pretty good, but I have serious doubts about its ability to stack up to Destiny.

@sellingthings: I mean, you can say what you want about Destiny, but it played great; the shooting and combat mechanics in that game are top tier. Even if Anthem gets everything else right, if it doesn't actually shoot any better than Andromeda, that game is not going to have near the popularity Destiny has.

@Mogan: It is not the same team. Most senior developers left for other projects, as well as designers, writers, and etc. Up to what I can remember of course.

@Mogan: ME:A was designed by a smaller development group of BIOWARE that had only worked on DLC content until Andromeda came along. It was no wonder that it turned out to have issues. Bioware main office has been working on Anthem(also known as Project Dyllan) for 5 years!!!!! Or as soon as the Mass Effect 3 released. Insane!!

@Mogan: Bioware has access to EA resources. They tapped into Battlefield dev team for ME:A, and combat is the only good part of that game.

@siarhei: Good compared to the rest of Andromeda. Doesn't hold a candle to Destiny's combat though.

@Mogan: Honestly, it doesn't even hold a candle to previous ME game's combat in my opinion. I gave ME:A about 20 hours, but just couldn't get into it. If the combat was better, I could have kept going.

Dunno if they get this, but dialogues and lore are differente then a proper story. They put some dialogue betwin npcs in the taken king and everyone was like: "Oh, theres a story now".

Goddamit!

@everson_rm: I don't think people were like, "There's a story now!" so much as they were, "They're actually telling me the story now!" Because there was ALWAYS a story in Destiny, even in the original launch game ... they just repeatedly refused to tell it to you.

@Mogan: No, dialogue and lore are differente then story. You must play with different ppl, because everyone i know who plays destiny said the same thing: "Wohoo! Theres a story now"

To tell you the truth, i really dont care that much about story, if the gameplay is great (like destiny). And, after playng games like The last of Us and Life is Strange, wich deliver a great story, on every aspect of it (like acting, script, pace while being really believeable) , story in other games feel shalow now.

I get the feeling that, even with all this "not falling for this again" attitude, I'll still see a majority of my friends on this game on launch day. I'll stick with the blah blah blah unannounced version a year and a half down the line when it's $20. Even that's a maybe. I don't even want this to fail but they're telling us what we want to hear so pretty damn skeptical.

But....good luck to all the suckers.

So, will that take the form of "boss spouts exposition throughout each 30min battle", which is now commonplace?

Not that it matters -- many of us won't spend another dollar on any of it.

Always the same bullshit from Bungie's PR department. It wouldn't be the same game if it had too much story, in fact it would have nothing to do with the mess that Destiny 1 was if that was the case. There wasn't even npc dialogue in that game, all you'd ever get out of npcs is a line when you hand in a task and the random mumbling they give off at times.

I will (maybe) buy this a year down the line, when it is a full game.

People will complain about how cheesy it has become that's all. With Cayde 6 just trying to crack one liners all the time which are the least funny thing I've ever heard.

I recently watched some videos of this game. It looks like one of the most boring fucking games I've ever seen. The story is probably the least of their problems.

I was thinking of trying out the PC Beta, just to see what it's about, but now I wont even do that. Giant waste of time.

Oh bullshit, they can't go saying the first game was intended to be so light on story when it was already public news that the plan always has to have it be much more story/campaign focused until Activision forced them to rip out nearly everything.
