Hideo Kojima made a surprise appearance during the Summer Game Fest kickoff stream to reveal Death Stranding: Director's Cut, which is coming to PS5, and it appeared that it could have been something very different for a second. Just before the reveal, he spoke with host Geoff Keighley about his next project and the current state of the world, and debuted a trailer for the Director's Cut, which had a distinctly Metal Gear style to it--to the extent that he was essentially trolling the audience.

Captured on PS5, the trailer showed Sam "Porter" Bridges exploring a small stock room, dumping out a box of oranges--in a slight nod to Metal Gear Solid 2--and hiding inside just like Solid Snake. In the underground facility he was in, which wasn't present in the original game, there were soldiers who looked similar to the Homo Demens terrorists that made appearances throughout the game, but far more militarized. At the end of the trailer, a title sequence came up revealing the Director's Cut, followed by a PS5 console shot. Host Geoff Keighley remarked that the full reveal is "weeks away" and that the PS5 update is coming soon.

Now Playing: Death Stranding Director's Cut Reveal | Summer Game Fest 2021

Prior to the Death Stranding reveal, Kojima discussed how COVID-19 has impacted game development at his studio and teased some details about his next project. He told host Geoff Keighley that the reality of COVID-19 felt similar to the world of Death Stranding, and it's caused him to rethink his creative process. Kojima said he can't say what his future creative projects will look like, but he's putting thought into how to spearhead new ways of creating games. He also reiterated that he likes to put societal elements into his games.

Not much else is known about Death Stranding: Director's Cut, aside from the fact that it will feature some new content and will bring Kojima's game to the PS5. According to Keighley, we should expect to hear more about the game in the weeks ahead. Following the reveal of the game, the Twitter account for Nvidia GeForce also made a brief nod to the reveal of the Director's Cut, which could be a hint that this edition of the game could be coming to PC as well. Last year, Death Stranding was released on PC, and it included a set of visual and gameplay upgrades that greatly enhanced the open-world game.

It'll be interesting to see what gets added to the game with the Director's Cut of Death Stranding. Plus, Death Stranding will likely take advantage of the PS5's unique DualSense controller, which offers a very tactile and unique way to connect with games due to the enhanced vibration and haptic feedback. Previous Kojima games have seen similar enhanced ports, which added in bonus content, so we may see something fresh with Death Stranding in the future.
