Dark Souls sequel in question

From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki apologizes for "technical difficulties" in last year's role-playing game, says not sure if studio will make another title in universe.

The existence of technical issues in a game as large as Dark Souls comes as little surprise, but for developer From Software, these headaches might prevent a sequel from seeing the light of day.

Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.
Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.

In an interview with Edge, From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki admitted there were numerous bugs in Dark Souls, and apologized to fans for this.

"Yes, there were technical difficulties," he said. "I don't believe that it's okay to have them, but realistically speaking, it was quite a large-scale game--even in terms of budget and expectations. So we're very sorry for the trouble we've caused by our processing errors and bugs from Japan."

When asked about the likelihood of From Software creating another game in the Dark Souls universe, Miyazaki said he's not sure it will happen, or if fans will forgive the studio for previous technical issues.

"We don't even know if we'll have another chance," he said. "We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes, so I cannot give an exact answer."

Technical issues do not spell doom for all large-scale games. The Fallout series, a franchise notorious for its widespread and sometimes comical bugs, has spawned numerous sequels despite these issues.

Dark Souls was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October to a glowing critical reception. It went on to ship more than 1.5 million units worldwide and was October's sixth-best-selling title.

The only thing I notice in Dark Souls (almost at the end of my second play through) is the frame rate problem in Blightown and the delayed attack bug in rare cases....and I haven't installed any of the patches. Please make another Souls game :). The industry doesn't care about bugs...I mean...Skyrim was given game of the year by many websites and it's full of bugs.

I found no bug that prevented me from enjoying it a lot so I don't think they even needed to apologize, the game's great an that's that.

"Insignificant" enough for you to notice it!

And not as egocentric as yours that has been made just to highlight that you have noticed an "insignificant" comment. :P

Why everything has to have a sequel? Demon's and Dark Souls have plenty to offer for months of replay value, this thing people have about craving for sequels is just consumerism...

@Gelugon_baat Slow-down and bugs are not the same. I have put over 60+ hours into it so far and cannot remember running into any real noticable bugs. I'm sure there are plenty of glitches, but those aren't bugs either. Also, I am not sure anyone is forgiving them in the sense you are using it. It's just that the slowdown is such an insignificant blight on an otherwise incredible, daunting, lengthy and some might even say "difficult", soul scouring adventure.

MY GOD. how could you even compare the glitch fest that makes a bethesda game to some slow down? seriously...they're not equivalent Though, I do hope they make a sequel whether it's dark souls 2 or demons souls 2 I'll be all over it. Personally, I would love a Demon's Souls style game for the Vita. Just make the levels a little bit shorter but keep the "quit anywhere" feature of Dark Souls and you would have another big seller and a handwritten thank you letter from yours truly. PS3 = Dark Souls 2 Vita = Demons Souls 2

It's never good to see any perfectly good franchise die especially a non-mainstream RPG with great ideas. Hopefully they man up and give us a sequel. If it's really a problem just wait til next generation.

@Rovelius The bugs still got into the game though - which they shouldn't have, by principle. Hey, I can see that many of you are rather forgiving of Dark Souls, but then, the lot of you are typically - easier for them to get away with mistakes. :D

I cannot believe they are saying this. There were a total of 2 or 3 small bugs that we conditional. You did them if you wanted to get a leg up and cheat like a homo while the rest could just ignore them and play the perfect game as it was meant to be played. If they are looking for forgiveness from us then they are crazy. I love From Software and I want another Dark Souls.

I have faith in From. They didn't let me down with Dark Souls, nor with any previous titles I purchased. Sure, took them a bit long to bring out 1.04 for Dark Souls, but still, it fixed major problems. I understand it's a complex game and that games weren't perfect since the first one, never were and never will. I had tons of fun with the game, loved it, and the problems weren't enough to keep me away from a new title. As @Jbul said, it's admirable that they're, in fact, apologizing for their game's hiccups. They are asking for their audience's forgiveness, and they regret bringing out this game. That's a reason more for us all to respect them. If they released Skyrim... they'd have dropped game developing after a sincere apology. But no, Bethesda releases the development kit so that fans can fix their broken game. I still can't play it, it freezes, and it's been almost 3 months since release.

This is definitely a Japanese perspective. Honor is a big part of their culture, so they feel bad about releasing an imperfect game, and wants fans' forgiveness. This is amazing. Todd Howard and Bethesda could learn a lot from this shocking display of humility.

FROM SOFTWARE have been making this kind of game since the PS1. There's no reason why they'd stop now when they're getting all the support and funding they need. They're making these games because they love doing so, not for money. I'd give a lot to have such an opportunity at expressing myself... of course they're gonna make another one. I'll pre-order and buy their next title, just like I did with Dark Souls. I know FROM won't let us down.

@XanderZane For your information, I've watched the video carefully and every single deaths were at the result of player stupidity. It's just a hype montage, don't take it too seriously. The whole "PREPARE TO DIE" thing is mostly aimed at today's impatient gamers, those who take their time and think don't die all that much.

Imagine Bethesda saying this; Due to the bugs in our game we won't make a second one. Series would have ended after Daggerfall.... On topic: I'm pretty sure they'll make a sequel, this is just the first part of the promotion campaign. Say you're probably not going to make a sequel to such a popular game is the perfect way to get public interest going. It's basic marketing, people.

I`m all about playing these large open-world RPG:s, and compared to Bethesdas Fallout- and Elder Scrolls- series, Dark Souls is much more intact and well composed game. Not sure what those tech. issues are, since I haven`t encountered any yet. Only issues I have confronted are personal and related to chewing the controller while shouting to my TV: -"Queelaq, why WON´T YOU DIE!!" :)

@Gelugon_baat True, but it's not like Dark Souls had massive glitches or anything. Like 3 or 4 minor glitches in the whole game at launch and they all got patched rather quickly. Still, goes to show the difference between the honest and shameless.

Look Armored Core is a respectable series, but it was Demons Souls, followed by Dark Souls that really made From Software A listers in the gaming world. Unless they have an idea for another franchise, I would not write of the Souls series.

Dark Souls is the game if this generation! I only encountered a few small bugs, and none of them were really noticeable, even 100 hours in. Compare that to a game like Skyrim, where they are abundant even 1 hour in. It would be a great tragedy to see From Sofware leave this series behind, when it is truly the freshest breath of air amidst the pile of crap most developers are responsible for. I have been gaming for over 20 years and Dark Souls is the best I have come across. Everyone who loves this game needs to post comments here and on their website. They need to know how precious this series is!

The only thing I won't forgive, Hidetaka Miyazaki, is if you don't make another game to show us how sorry you truly are. Visionaries like you are bound to make mistakes when you attempt to do something that nobody else has. Since when has a hiccup in innovation induced fickleness? Heck, I think I'm going to buy a copy right now! (I rented it before, wasn't sure I was ready to tackle the difficulty...)

I am moved by your words, Mr. Miyazaki. I didnt experience anything that removed me from the overall experience, only a minor hitch here and there. Dark Souls is all about learning from mistakes, both on our end as the players and your end as the developer so of course you are forgiven. I have poured most of the last 3 months into this fantastic game and would love to see what From Software can do next, be it a direct sequel or not.

Of course we can forgive bugs. They are pretty much a minor annoyance (bar game-breaking stuff). 1.7million people are subscribed to the buggy mess that is The Old Republic and millions bought Oblivion, Skyrim and the 2 recent Fallout games and have loved them despite numerous bugs.

I hope they read these comments... If anything they should just make grouping up in co op better, and the difficulty more like Demon's Souls. Some deaths in Dark Souls felt a bit cheap, or like you weren't in full control of the situation. Demon's Souls worked just fine without open world, so they could just make like 10-15 worlds instead of 5 and I would be very happy. Maybe add some kind of LFG feature in the Nexus... I want my Maiden back too :( she's better than any campfire will ever be. Touching the demon inside her never gets old...

the only bugs that i saw was that infinite souls glith with the dragon head stone and that new londo went a bit laggy but that didnt affect the game at all Dark souls was much harder than demon souls and much more fun the director is very modest but no ones angry at him only angry at skyrim for stealing all the game of the year awards which it did not deserve

Die! Hahaha, so good to see others suffer the same fate as my char. Like others said, technical difficulties are not bothering to me. The challenging enemies, bosses, obstacles are fine as long as the nearest bonfires (save points) are found. Just one comment, please make more and easier to find bonfires! Excellent game.
