Dark Souls sequel in question

From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki apologizes for "technical difficulties" in last year's role-playing game, says not sure if studio will make another title in universe.

The existence of technical issues in a game as large as Dark Souls comes as little surprise, but for developer From Software, these headaches might prevent a sequel from seeing the light of day.

Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.
Gamers might not get another game from the Dark Souls universe to die a horrific death in.

In an interview with Edge, From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki admitted there were numerous bugs in Dark Souls, and apologized to fans for this.

"Yes, there were technical difficulties," he said. "I don't believe that it's okay to have them, but realistically speaking, it was quite a large-scale game--even in terms of budget and expectations. So we're very sorry for the trouble we've caused by our processing errors and bugs from Japan."

When asked about the likelihood of From Software creating another game in the Dark Souls universe, Miyazaki said he's not sure it will happen, or if fans will forgive the studio for previous technical issues.

"We don't even know if we'll have another chance," he said. "We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes, so I cannot give an exact answer."

Technical issues do not spell doom for all large-scale games. The Fallout series, a franchise notorious for its widespread and sometimes comical bugs, has spawned numerous sequels despite these issues.

Dark Souls was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October to a glowing critical reception. It went on to ship more than 1.5 million units worldwide and was October's sixth-best-selling title.

FromSoftware are great developers, they are currently the best. After patch 1.05 the game is much better. After i played Demon's/Dark Souls, it became my favorite RPG, just make the sequel.

@Outer_Raven -If he only apologized for the mistakes, then i wouldn't have said that, but "oh i don't know if i can make another game". It's false modesty, trust me. Mistakes are made and you fix them with actions, not words. We all know the Souls series have potential to go on, you think From doesn't? I'm the first to complain about companies that care only about money, not saying that From is one of these, but they could apoligize and leave the promise of the next souls game being better.

@XanderZane Yeah , I dont think Dark souls will come to the Pc. My personal opinion among some other who had the same opinion was that they held the petition because they wanted to see if they should do the next Souls game for Pc as well...just speculation of course

@Outer_Raven And you, i was expecting more answers of your kind. You defend the game with only emotions and no reason, if you truly think it's that good then i'd reccomend you only play Demon and Dark Souls then. -Blighttown was even harder, a game that needs precisions and reflex don't go well with lagging. And millions completed 8+ times? Don't push. That's a feat for a few, it's doable, but not for everyone. -I KNOW it was fixed, but take a look at the leaderboards, do you think ALL of them got so far without that glitch? It was fixed but already left it's marks on the game, so it was not "flawless" -About 40% of the times i died was because of the camera and the crappy lock-on, "Finicky target lock." complain with Kevin VanOrd too, that's something a reviewer said. I'm backed with facts instead of a vague "lol no" -If the dificulty it's the only what defines that game then the game would suck, no it isn't the fact of you spent more time dieing, losing souls, spend hours getting into the boss every time you want to challenge him that makes it fun. It's the dark atmosphere, the original story, the reinventing of a RPG and the gameplay physics that made Dark Souls being a good game. Otherwise BattleToads would be the best game ever, if difficulty was all that mattered.

@RealFabioSooner I'd never thought about it in that way before. But once given a thought you point of view seems right. I don't personally think that the bonfires are much different than the nexus and the archstones, but i don't think the Souls series can get any easier, though i do hope they remove that "curse" thing, it took me a 5 hour farming to be able to remove it...

I still don't think they will port it to the PC, even though it should be easy since it's already on the 360. It's all about sales though and the XBox 360 version didn't sell that great.

I think they should TOTALLY make a sequel. I´ve put 70+ hours in it, and each night I get back from work, the only thing I want to do is continue playing it.

While the assorted 'issues' are dealt with there is only one reasonable course of action to take- King's Field revival. Do it. Hell, even a retread of the Playstation game would be kind of novel and totally new for most of the current player base. Damned kids don't know about magic-spewing two-headed snails or the 'joys' of backpedaling from an over-leveled skeleton that someone jammed into a treasure chest. I wanted a flask, dammit, not a sword through my eye! It won't happen, but feh, a gal can dream.

"The Fallout series, a franchise notorious for its widespread and sometimes comical bugs, has spawned numerous sequels despite these issues." What the hell? Do your homework please - only Bethesda produced iterations of it have mass bugs. And it's a common knowledge that it's the developer's staple, not the series one

Beat the game twice on the 360 and I don't recall a single noticable dip in the FR or any memorable glitches..... I do recall, however, one of the most memorable games I've ever played, and that's saying alot.

WE FORGIVE YOU FROM! The game wasn't so buggy it couldn't be played and enjoyed. It certainly didn't stop me from playing it over and over and over. The only glitches that comes to mind: The dragon dying from 1 arrow and blightown frame rate. Most everything patched were to make the MP more balanced

It doesn't belong there. Petitions won't do anything. The game is made by a Japanese company. It has about a good a chance of coming to the PC as it does to the XBox 360. lol!! Oh wait, it is on the XBox 360. Demon's Souls isn't though. they can port it from the Xbox 360, but I doubt they will waste their time doing that.

Nice to know they're aware of the flaws, but to be honest, except for the dip in FR in Blighttown, didn't bug me too much. What does bug me, is the extremely flawed online... their concept is great, but due to the bottomless box glitch, flawed weapon scaling, and gear balances in general, the online interaction is extremely unbalanced. When I first jumped online, I didn't think there was a level limit to invasions, because I kept getting jumped by people with high level gear, maxed out lightning weapons, and armor only obtainable after a certain point. However, there is a restriction to invasions, the problem is due to the bottomless box glitch you're able to transfer everything from one character over to a brand new one. I've beaten the game a good three times offline, but waiting for a patch before I step back into the online experience. Though with as many balance problems they have (Those I've stated and not), I'm not very hopeful that there will ever be a complete fix to the online.

Rovelius Posted Feb 2, 2012 8:34 pm GMT -12 @XanderZane For your information, I've watched the video carefully and every single deaths were at the result of player stupidity. It's just a hype montage, don't take it too seriously. The whole "PREPARE TO DIE" thing is mostly aimed at today's impatient gamers, those who take their time and think don't die all that much. **************************************************************** So the 100+ times you've died was because of your stupidity as well? lol!! Actually, they died, because they ran into something they weren't prepared for; the same way you died. It's all trial and error. Escaping isn't always possible. I'm sure you know this.

@scorpgul...I have the ps3 version...and YES the only time the FR dropped for me , was in blighttown. Other then that I havent seen any other glitches or bugs at all in the game and I've put over 400 hrs into it. I think it should of just stayed exclusive to the ps3, you wouldnt have heard half as much whining and moaning about the game. Also, @Gelugon_baat when your past 6-7 posts on the same page of this forum have -9 thumbs each and peoples comments arent very happy with you...I'd take that as a sign you should just stop.

Well if From Software was smart they would make a follow up without question and asses those problems that seem to be bothering Miyazaki so much. I played through Dark Souls almost 4x and was never bothered by technical issues to the point that I would stop playing the game. There were some issues but nothing I believed was major and could not be fixed. By far, Dark Souls is one of the best games I've ever played. Figure it out From Software!!

The only bug I ran into was the dip in frame rate in blight town, but as a whole the game is incredible! Many games out there have way worse bugs. Its good to see that the developers are really taking this to heart though and I reckon all of the fans will be wanting a sequel!

About time a developer admits they screwed up. The framerate drop on the PS3 version was shocking and its the PS3(Demon's Souls) that got you recognition for Soul series -.-. I heard the 360 versions has virtually no framerate drops 10-12 fps come on. Worst thing is the game is FAR from the graphical powerhouses available on PS3 which perform BETTER. Don't tell me Dark Souls looks like Uncharted 3 and Killzone 3 and those games play SMOOTH. This constant framerate drop killed the game for me. Played first 2 levels then threw my copy away even got the special edition you thieves. If you cannot develop a lagfree game for a system that has been out for 6 years then you are not a real developer.

The only glitches I've come across in the game were some clipping issues. I was hit by the hellkite dragon's fire through a wall, and the wyverns in the VoD keep jumping through the ground and inevitably killing themselves. Both were easily excused... I don't see the problem Miyazaki-san?

Sounds like some kind of marketing ploy, why would you apologize for a game riddled with bugs when there were barely any to speak of. Framerate drop I would not consider a bug at all, and that was really only in blightown...thats what an hour or 2 tops? Seems kind of silly to release something like this, sounds like they just want to cut the project and move on to something else, but this is better marketing than saying, "we are done with this franchise, sorry you millions of fans." A few buggy online issues and framerate drops do not warrent an apology from a gaming studio.

Hidetaka Miyazak - What a hero to be so humble about a few bugs and framerate drops, more devs should be like this, rather than the ones that only get praise for broken games. I would rather buy a sequal from someone with this attitude. ...

XanderZane Posted Feb 2, 2012 1:11 pm GMT -12 (hide) The video is hilarious. 1-2 hits and you're dead. Many of the players just jumped off the walls to their dead, cause it wasn't going to make a difference. If you enjoy dying about 600-700 times in a game before you even make it half way through, Dark Souls is the game for you. lol!! I don't care if they make another or not. I'll be playing Kingdoms or Amular and FF XIII-2 instead.

I loved this game, as I said before, it's my new all time favorite. There is no reason to worry Mr. Miyazaki, the only real problem was some frame rate issures in Blightown (at least to me). As for a sequel, I expect another spiritual sucessor not a Dark Souls 2. The Souls franchise can be like the Final Fantasy franchise. I'd buy every new release. :D

Yes, you certainly should make another game in the series. It's arguably the most exciting RPG to come along since The Elder Scrolls. On that note, look at Skyrim, absolutely bug-ridden, do most of us still play and enjoy it? Yes. I'd wait for the next generation though and see if you can expand Dark Souls into a full open world experience, it would be great.
