Cyberpunk 2077 has multiplayer

CD Projekt Red managing director confirms upcoming role-playing game will have unspecified "multiplayer features."

Cyberpunk 2077 will have a multiplayer component. Developer CD Projekt Red managing director Adam Badowski confirmed the news to Eurogamer, but did not go into greater detail.

No Caption Provided

"It will be a story-based RPG experience with amazing single-player playthroughs, but we're going to add multiplayer features," Badowski said.

Badowski also confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will not cast players as a predefined hero but rather allow them to forge their own creation. "We'll have different situations in Cyberpunk," Badowski said. "Cyberpunk will have different character classes."

Cyberpunk 2077 puts players into a "dark future" in 2077 where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity." The game promises a nonlinear story designed for "mature" players and is set in the metropolis of Night City. It has also been revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 will feature sandbox elements, though this was not detailed.

CD Projekt Red's other project, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, may also include multiplayer. The developer recently said it was "thinking about something" related to a series-first multiplayer option for the 2014-dated role-playing game.

I don't really recommend multiplayer for story-driven rpg's but all i can hope for is that it doesn't affect the quality of the single-player, hopefully they implement the multiplayer in a way similar to dark souls..

Seriously people stop going crazy this is CDprojeckt we're talking about here the only reason they're gonna put multiplayer in is if they think it will make the game better and there's no way they're gonna do some always online DRM bull or ruin the single player. you'd think everything they've done so far (free DLC, massive content updates, giving out DRM free versions of their game to all the people who brought versions with DRM, just to name a few) would earn a little more trust from people. Multiplayer itself isn't bad its only the crap people like EA do with it that's wrong

This game is not even Pre Alpha stage , still prototyping this . Keep open mind people , I understand your concerns about Resources being taken away from Single Player but give them a chance . They deserve it .

@Cloud_imperium Yup, MP in and of itself isn't a bad thing, it's how it is implemented. I.E. SimCity, With the whole regions thing in SimCity 4, Multiplayer was an obvious addition for the next game, but making it so you're forced to be online to even play the game was bad.

@LesserAngel @Cloud_imperium Multiplayer in The Witcher 3 doesn't make sense because that game was built from ground up to be SP only game . I'll be first to bash MP for TW3 . However Cyberpunk is brand new franchise which is still in prototype level , possibilities are endless . So I'll keep an open mind about it .

They will ruin the game to attract more buyers. They will reduce the efforts for singleplayer and it wont be as great as the previous games for sure.

Greed is sad. It reaches everywhere!

co-op with lan support would be awesome.

death match, cod style multiplayer, however, would not be awesome.

hopefully CDPR know this, and will do it right.

I've never been interested in multiplayer, but as long as the game offers "amazing single-player playthroughs" I'm fine with it and I do believe CD Projekt Red can deliver on their promises.

It's not so surprising that we won't play a pre-made character, because Cyberpunk, as well as other table top games, are created to give you an opportunity of making your own personal character. I like the sound of character classes, though actually, I like everything I hear about CD Projekts projects. I'm like Gary Oldman when it comes to CD Projekt Red's games: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrTsuvykUZk

@Vojtass @NeverMore0 Then again, BioWare once released a game based on licensed system called Baldurs Gate, not Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Forgotten Realms.

@tom_cat_01 @NeverMore0 Because it's not a title, it's a description. It's the setting.

"We're making a cyberpunk game set in the year 2077, so what should we title it?" "Gee, I just don't know..."

There's been a lot of incredibly unoriginal movie titles lately too. Really annoys me.

I don't know why people don't want CDPR to grow and become bigger power house for PC gaming like Valve . I don't want multiplayer in The Witcher 3 not because I don't trust them but because if something buggy will appear in single player I'll be blaming multiplayer like crazy because it wasn't there in first two games . Both games were polished to perfection , at least on my PC I never ever experienced single bug in both Witcher games . However , when it comes to Cyberpunk , as we know it's brand new IP and they start it with Strong single player game and well done multiplayer from the very beginning of the series then multiplayer will become part of the IP and won't bother people , at least not me . Just imagine multiplayer in dark Night City with ground breaking Graphics of Red Engine 3 .

@Cloud_imperium So you're implying that in order for CDPR to grow and become a big power house like Valve, then they need to start pushing out multiplayer games? No thanks, that is the complete wrong advice, especially for a company that makes incredible story driven single player experiences.

IMO they should just keep doing what they've been doing, and don't get overpowered by greed like EA, Activision, Blizzard and Capcom all have. That is ultimately what kills game studios and creativity.

@2bitSmOkEy You didn't got the point so it's not worth to explain you . Read carefully , I said if they do multiplayer for CP along with strong Single Player from the beginning of the series can be justified but not in The Witcher 3 .

@Cloud_imperium @2bitSmOkEy You're just dodging the question lol.

In any case, no I don't agree with you. I don't believe they need to add multiplayer experiences to continue growing, I think by simply putting out the same (or higher) quality single player experiences they've already been doing, they will naturally get bigger.

I swear, sometimes people forget that gamers just want to play good games....

@2bitSmOkEy @Cloud_imperium Yes I want to become a power house , I want GOG to grow so they can spend more money on their titles . Look at graphics difference between the first game and second . 2nd one looks phenomenal thanks to Red Engine which costs money to make you know .? If you would have read their interview then you known that Adam Badowski doesn't want to exceed 200 numbers of employees because lesser employees are easier to manage and by this they'll be able to focus on Mature audience instead of broader ones to fill the pockets of 1000s of employees . You have understood before mentioning Blizzard , Activision , EA and bla bla bla .

I hope I'll like this game. Witcher series was too complicated for me, not only the gameplay mechanics but also the story... too much back stories! =(

Maybe I should stick to simpler games like Ni no Kuni :P

@Yuna08 Their games are always complex and will stay that way . I myself understood the whole plot of The Witcher 2 from beginning to end after playing it 4 times but after understanding it I had no problems in understanding The Story of the first witcher (I played 2nd first then 1st after that then 2nd again with 1st saves) . The story is one of the reasons why I love their games .

Make it fully co-op with everything available (as if you were playing single player). Co-op is really the only necessary MP portion I feel should fit the game. I trust CD Projeckt Red with all of this and any games they make.

Adam Badowski also said in interview that currently there are 150 developers in CDPR and he doesn't want to exceed 200 . I think that's amazing strategy .

More employees = Will need more profit to fill their pockets = Game for broader audience

Less employees = Lesser Need of money to run the company = Quality products for Mature gamers

@Cloud_imperium Not really. It really balances out overall. Less employees does mean lower cost in the short run but it also means that it takes longer to get the job done meaning that the lower cost is extended over a longer time.

Just as an example say it costs 1,000 dollars a month to maintain a staff of 100 and 2,000 to maintain a staff of 200 (just an example I know the number is unrealistic)

They make the exact same game. The team of 100 completes the game in 2 month (once again I know unrealistic but it makes for easy calculations). So the total cost is $2000. The team of 200 has more people working on it so the job gets done in just one month. So their overall cost for the game is still $2000 dollars. It balances itself out. More people less dev time, less people more dev time.

There is also the aspect of more people allows the company to work on more aspects of the game at once allowing a deeper game. A small team could do this as well but it would be a lot more time consuming and challenging because of being spread thinner than the larger group would.

On small teams benefit though they are easier to manage and keep up with what everyone is doing. Its a lot easier to organize 10 people to a common idea and keep them on track than it is with 20.

There are pros and cons to both. but cost isn't really one of them. Cost will pretty much remain consistent whether you have a large team or not.

@Celiria_Rose @Cloud_imperium Dude when you have larger company it's difficult to handle them . When company can't afford them they lay off their employees . Just like Gamespy which was recently shut down IGN which is their parent company . Obviously CDPR are not stupid and THEY are in the business , not me or you . Lesser employees are easy to manage as well . You should read the interview yourself .

@Cloud_imperium @Celiria_Rose Though the real difference to me, when it comes to "good" or "bad" companies, seems to be whether the company needs to please stockholders or not, rather than whether the company is large or medium size. Although, it's more likely for a large company to have stockholders than a medium/small one. Anyway, too many cooks spoil the broth.

@Celiria_Rose @Cloud_imperium That was my point as well from different prospective . Obviously when you have more people in company you need more profit to pay them . That's why people are fired when profit's are not good and employees are more than that .

Dear everyone, it seems...

Not ALL Multiplayer is "tacked on", sometimes it's a prominent part of development that runs concurrently with the game from its conception - not added at the end or half way. Also, not all MP is depthless and un-innovative. I, for example, really like the Assassin's Creed MP, because it's unusual and encourages tactics and logic and thinking about your situation in different ways.

I don't get what's wrong with MP if the single player experience remains exactly the same as it would have been without MP...

While it's not news I want to hear, since it's a completely new IP, it could work out. Instead of forging a single player world for a few games THEN tacking on MP, the universe can be built from scratch with MP in mind to put it where it belongs.

@KiLLLeR150 The world doesn't need to be built with multiplayer in mind. Multiplayer just has to be designed to fit. Multiplayer in the Witcher 3 can be perfectly good as long as they put thought into how its done instead of just throwing it in. Assassin's Creed for example, the world and game style wasn't built with multiplayer in mind but Ubisoft put thought into how to handle it and made a mode that fit well within the world.

This makes perfect sense- and I speak as someone who has no plans to play the multiplayer. It's based on a PnP RPG, so being able to roll your own character and play multiplayer fits in fine.

It almost certainly won't mean an Online Pass because CD:PR have come out against all forms of DRM pretty strongly. The only real risk is that it dilutes their focus a bit, but they're a developer who historically has known what they're doing.
