Cyberpunk 2077 Design Documents Being Held For Ransom, CD Projekt Red Confirms

CD Projekt Red acknowledges the legitimacy of the leaked files.

Documents related to the development of Cyberpunk 2077, the upcoming game from The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, have somehow found their way out of the studio. Now, they're being held for ransom, with someone (or some group) threatening to release them if CD Projekt doesn't pay up.

The developer revealed this news in a message posted on Twitter today. It describes the documents as "a few internal files belonging to CD Projekt Red. Among them are documents connected to early designs for the upcoming game, Cyberpunk 2077."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Cyberpunk 2077 Design Documents Are Being Held For Ransom

"A demand for ransom has been made, saying that should we not comply, the files will be released to the general public," CD Projekt's message continued. It said it has contacted the authorities and does not intend to pay the ransom, which it acknowledges might result in the files making their way online. It did not say what the ransom entails.

"The documents are old and largely unrepresentative of the current vision of the game," it said. "Still, if you're looking forward to playing Cyberpunk 2077, it would be best for you to avoid any information not coming directly from CD Projekt Red."

It's a somewhat bizarre situation, as it's not often that leaks manifest themselves in this way. One of the more famous leaks in the industry involves Half-Life 2, which saw its source code leaked following a Steam hack prior to the game's release. This also led to the public release of a playable version of the game. Valve would later attempt to lure the hacker into being arrested by the FBI under the guise of a job interview, though he was first arrested in Germany.

Little has been shared about Cyberpunk 2077 since its announcement; you can see a 2013 teaser trailer above. The RPG is slated for release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One at some point in the future. CD Projekt Red's message concludes, "When the time is right, you will hear about Cyberpunk 2077 from us--officially."

Seriously, anything that gets leaked will just increase the level of excitement for the game. In fact, let the info get out there and evaluate the responses. Adjust the game accordingly to appeal to even more people. It will only make it easier for people to buy knowing more about it because it will be good.

The best products are the ones where the customer has more say in how it's made.

For those who says this is a PR stun: CDP is a public traded company, that means most stockholders dont really understand the company's business. If they panic that this could potentially spoil the game and dump their stocks, the price will fall. And knowing CDP, this will never be their approach, rather than provide a good quality product and let it sell itself.

to be honest unless the design doc specifically states ways of duping people out of their money by making them pay for a half finished game or something (not that CDPR would do that, in fact I'm certain of the opposite). or specific and important story details, all releasing those documents can do is generate hype for the game. Not paying these idiots hurts the developer and the game not one bit.

Leak is a leak. Paying ransom doesn't revert it. You can't trust scumbags to not spread copies even after getting paid anyway.

Gladly they are just design docs.

Pshhhh, design docs who cares.

The real question is after the leak, will game journalists sell their moral integrity and report on their contents, instead of completely ignoring it as this deserves.

@Thanatos2k: CDPR made the announcement themselves. They wanted this to get attention, and you can see the reason in their post.

I can point it out for you if you can't spot it; they want to give a heads up to gamers that they might see some old Cyberpunk 2077 material, that is not representative of the current vision of the game.

@groowagon: Uh, they certainly won't be making the announcement that their stuff is leaked - nor will they be providing the location to obtain it.

@groowagon: Maybe you should read the article. The article is them responding to the question of "Is this true?" with "Yes it's true, and we're not paying."

They are not linking to leaked materials. They are not proving leaked materials. They are not saying the materials have been leaked. They are saying they *may* be leaked.

@Thanatos2k: Where is the part where someone asked "is this true"? And where is the part them responding "yes it's true"? This article doesn't mention the fictional quotes you are making.

@Thanatos2k: Thanatos, you're an idiot. "Uh, they certainly won't be making the announcement that their stuff is leaked"... Read what's in the picture.... very veeerrrry slowly.... that's CDPR ANNOUNCING the leak!

"Maybe you should read the article. The article is them responding to the question of "Is this true?" with "Yes it's true, and we're not paying." "

Maybe YOU should read it again. Nowhere does it say that anyone asked them if this is true.

"They are not linking to leaked materials. They are not proving leaked materials."

No one said they did

"They are not saying the materials have been leaked. They are saying they *may* be leaked."

True... they didnt' say it WAS leaked... they just said a group told CDPR that they had their files. But ask yourself this. If it wasnt' true, why would they even bother coming out and saying it happened? We wouldn't see any fallout when they don't pay...

@Dragon_Irons: They haven't announced any leak. If they were, you could go get the leaked documents now. You can't, because there hasn't been a leak. There has been a theft, and a threat to leak. That's what they announced.

"But ask yourself this. If it wasnt' true, why would they even bother coming out and saying it happened?"

As an explanation for why a leak may occur in the near future. As they explained.

You can insult me all you want, but that's probably because you know I'm right and that's making you mad. I get it. I do.

I avoid pretty much all info related to games, aside from gameplay demos and/or reviews (to know if a game is worth playing or not), prior to release, so this kinda doesn't matter.. unless people start talking about it on every platform imaginable and spewing spoilers because they're scum, ala Star Wars 7.

It all sounds like a very good marketing campaign for me. And also like the plot of a Cyberpunk 2020 game: a netrunner steals files from a corporation and then asks for a ransom for them. In the game, though, they would sell it to a Fixer, but in this case, is released on the net.

And as a marketing move is BRILLIANT: they have the people talking about the game like crazies without showing a single image of it. Also, the timing is convenient: so close to E3, and with a statement said shortly ago that the marketing campaign was already planned. If this is a marketing campaign, is the work of a GENIOUS.

@livelong: I was thinking about that as I was reading this article but to me it looks to official to be a marketing tactic. How will the devs justify announcing this in the way they worded it on their website?

@livelong: As if this would be the best way to market a game... they can do better if they want this game to get more attention. All they need to do is release a 10 sec teaser and there's an article on every gaming site.

I'm glad CD Projekt Red is not going to give into the demands and it's pretty cool how they informed the public about it. Even the documents contained spoilers I hope they'd still refuse out of principle. I'd certainly refuse to look at the leaks out of principle and I think you can count on most fans who wouldn't want the story spoiled would do the same.

Now CDPR has to trust that gamers aren't idiots.

Once this gets leaked how long do you think before people start claiming "Cyberpunk looks like a dud!" and "CDPR clearly doesn't have it any more!" based on some crappy pre-development models and ideas?
