Crysis 2 delayed, Need for Speed Shift 2 announced

[UPDATE]: Electronic Arts reveals Crytek shooter and previously unheard of racing sequel both set for launch in first quarter of 2011; Dead Space 2 also listed for handheld and mobile devices.

While investors poured through Electronic Arts' first quarter results looking for good news of the publisher's financial fortunes, gamers taking a peek found both good news and bad. The company's results included a publishing and distribution schedule revealing two unexpected games penciled in for the first quarter of 2011: Crysis 2 and Need for Speed Shift 2, both listed for the console and PC.

This Crysis just got less imminent.
This Crysis just got less imminent.

Previously, Crysis 2 had been announced as launching in the 2010 holiday season, while Need for Speed Shift 2 hadn't been announced at all. The revelation of Shift 2 being due by March 2011 is especially notable considering it comes on the heels of Criterion Games' much-anticipated first Need for Speed game, Hot Pursuit. Currently, Hot Pursuit is set to arrive in stores November 16.

Crysis 2 sees players fend off an alien threat once again, aided by a nanosuit that grants the user superhuman abilities ranging from speed boosts to active camouflage. One departure the sequel will be taking is in the setting. While the original game featured lush tropical environments, Crysis 2 takes place in the urban jungle of New York City.

Unlike its campy predecessor Need for Speed Undercover, Shift focused more on the experience of driving and was oriented around first-person, in-cockpit perspective racing. Upon its release last September, Shift featured more licensed cars than any previous installment of the series, as well as a number of real-world tracks, including the UK's Brands Hatch course. The game was released on consoles and the PC, with development handled by Slightly Mad Studios in collaboration with EA's Black Box studio.

For more on Crysis 2, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

[UPDATE] In a post-earnings conference call, EA's John Schappert said Crysis 2 was delayed for a "better window and polishing."

Another title lurking in the publisher's quarterly report was the acknowledgement of Dead Space 2 coming not just to the PC and consoles, but also to handhelds and mobile phones. EA didn't specify if the "handheld" designation indicated a PSP, DS, or even a 3DS installment in the survival horror franchise.

The Dead Space brand is spreading faster than a necromorph infestation. EA has already documented a multimedia blitz for the series involving comics, novels, and animated films, and recently registered a URL for a Dead Space Sabotage Web site.

Hmm ... so Crysis 2 is going to come out late !! ... but I don't think they are doing the right thing !! ... as a matter of face the RAGE also backed down from releasing this year and moved to the 2011 ... and there is other good games like DRAGON AGE 2 and Dead Space 2 has gone back ... and maybe DIABLO 3 is going to come out next year too !! ... and again SHIFT 2 !! WOW ... and no matter how good a game is it's still tough to survive in business competition ... I just hope it won't go down ... and still I would very much like it if it come out this year somehow !!.

@PenthiusX No, it isn't sad; the ragdoll physics presented by Crysis offers nothing new and indeed made a lot of steps back. Virtually every game nowadays, shooter or not, has a rag doll physics, and a lot of games pre-Crysis offers a ragdoll physics too much better, as you can see in Painkiller, Freedom Fighters, Half-Life 2, various Tomb Raiders, Call of Duties, Call of Juarez and a lot more, don't even asking you to have a futuristic PC. And I'm saying "Rag-Doll Physics", i.e., the bodies physics, not the materials physics like bottles, crates and whatnot, because these physics, Crytec made a good job. And no, I didn't play Crysis with the effects off; I don't have a next-gen PC indeed, but I think my Athlon 64 6000 with a GeForce 9600 256bit with 1Gb and 2Gb RAM can run Crysis 1 very well, to say the least.

Delay isn't always a bad thing , they will have more time polishing it to be better.

This delay has nothing to do with polishing up the game and everything to do with avoiding what looks to be a bad Christmas season retail sales-wise and to avoid the annual juggernaut of Call of Duty Black Ops. Hell Medal of Honor is going to have a hard enough time competing with Halo Reach and Call of Duty. When little Johnny only has $130 to spend on games this Christmas neither Crysis or MOH will be on the list. The problem is that a lot of games are getting moved to the late winter/spring release so that field will be over crowded as well.

If that's what it takes to make Crysis 2 as good as it can be, I'm cool with that.

I don't know, maybe EA learned their "rushing games out makes them horrible" lesson with APB. If so, then congratulations!

So upset that crysis is being held back but it aint all bad seeing how we've got loads of good games coming out by the end of the year (except for Cod), cant wait for Vanquish, halo reach, NFS:Hot pursuit (again), Medal of honor, dead space 2 and GR:Future warfare.

Dead Space: Ignition could work on the PSP, DS, and Cell phone; I bet the main Dead Space games could also work on a PSP and maybe the 3DS, but not on the Cell phone.

Wait... how many Need For Speed games they have coming out this year? I thought it was just World? Ah, well. I haven't played a NFS game since Underground 2, but it seems like they're kinda bunching them together. Are any of the newer games good?

@ mardinn lol, ACTUALLY blizzard is notorious for delaying games or outright cancelling games that dont meet their standards, starcraft 2 was one of the first they didnt have a date set in stone until the very end. not that delaying a game for quality control is ever a bad thing as it always has worked for them and im sure crytek knows what they are doing.

Two NFSs in 6 months...hopefully they'll be good, but this is usually a recipe for disaster...I don't want NFS to end up like street fighter which is now just sad, they pop a new SF every 6 months...same stuff, new package...

@ Robinvd1986 Yeah, like it's been less than three years since Crysis came out - so that's pretty far-fetched. Still, not too far off. It would be cool if they released a demo slightly earlier for the PC-gamers.

What a bombastic announcement! Who would expect an announcement of a new NFS with Hot Pursuit being already in development? No one. It seems NFS Shift has become a sub-franchise from EA.

Stupid Crytek.. No one can hold onto schedules. Blizzard at least announces it and hold up to the schedule unlike other companies.. even if it takes 10 years.

@GodGundamNT1 whats the point of comparing it to halo? not like halo ever had amazing graphics/storyline or anything ,only its multiplayer is good ,and yes i had the chance to play crysis on low settings with my older pc and it still looked better than that microsofts money cow with stupid looking space suits and even uglier aliens.

Yeah, I knew they were going to delay Crysis 2. A game with great graphics on all platforms has a lot of bugs to fix. Awells, at least it gives me time to upgrade my computer.

Crysis 2 delayed? Meh! I still haven't even beaten the first... I think there's something wrong with the version installed on my PC. As long as Star Wars The Old Republic doesn't get delayed I'll be fine.

For me, if a racing game is not an illegal drag, it is not fun. shift 2? please. they only want to compete with Forza. just keep truthful to the brand and stop copying the ones who tried to copy you. EA = brands destroyer.

NFS Shift, AGAIN? Really, EA doesn't give up, they will push this fail sim race game down our throats again. If so, try to call it another name but "Need For Speed", you are forgetting its roots. Its a street game, not track one, as @admiral_picard said. Try something different like put the sims features into a street racing, and see what happens. Now, Crysis 2 delay... maybe this time they will realize that bombastic-future graphics would do better if it has decent gameplay instead of those shameful out of date ragdoll broken physics, and a real plot, instead of the saturated brainless "shoot the hell out of the aliens" shooter. Btw most of all will be able to play crysis 2 a couple of years after it's release, no matter what we do, it's system requirements will always make a time travel to the future and come back.

You can't rush perfection so am not mad at crytek for pushing Crysis2 to 2011. but I do hope this means crysis2 will have a long single player campaign coz of late fps campaigns have beeen getting shorter and shorter, which to me is not good coz I consider the campaign to be the core experience of the game, and the mp just a bonus to play after beating the main game(campaign). So please crytek give us a sp campaign of decent length. Anyway am certain crysis2 will kick major a$$.
