Destiny 2's Randomized Loot Boxes Leave The Game This Week

Get ready to say goodbye to Bright Engrams in the Eververse Store.

As Bungie gears up for Season 10 of Destiny 2, which kicks off on March 10 with the return of the Trials of Osiris, the studio is aiming to make the looter-shooter's rewards more transparent. When the Season of the Worthy goes live on Tuesday, you will no longer be able to buy Bright Engrams--essentially randomized loot boxes--from the in-game Eververse Store.

Director Luke Smith shared a lengthy Director's Cut blog post discussing the state of Destiny 2, detailing the lessons learned and the hope held for the future of the looter-shooter. In both looking forward and backward, Smith said Destiny Bright Engrams no longer reflect Bungie's values and vision.

"For Season 10, we're doing away with Bright Engrams as purchasable items. We want players to know what something costs before they buy it," Smith wrote. "Bright Engrams don't live up to that principle so we will no longer be selling them on the Eververse Store, though they will still appear on the Free Track of the Season Pass."

Bright Engrams are a type of randomized item you received after either leveling up past the level cap or purchasing them from the Eververse Store. These items are purely cosmetic, consisting of customization options such as emotes, ornaments, shaders, sparrows, and more.

As Smith notes, Bright Engrams aren't actually going anywhere; they've just been moved from a paid in-game option to the free track of Destiny 2's battle pass. Every five levels past level 100 also nets you Bright Engrams, meaning these are the only two ways you can acquire the randomized item now.

A lot is set to change when Destiny 2 Season 10 goes live next week, including a nerf to a bunch of guns such as grenade launchers, fusion rifles, shotguns, and more. We're pleading with Bungie to not make Destiny 2's guns like Destiny 1--please. Beyond that, expect Faction Rallies gear to return along with the introduction of a new seasonal event.
