Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has teased the company's next game, boasting that it's the "greatest" thing the studio has ever made. Speaking to IGN, Pitchford did not name this title outright and said an announcement will come in due course. As background, Pitchford gave his comments after being asked to name his favorite Borderlands game. Many are taking this to mean he might have been referring to the unannounced Borderlands 4.

"Look, we haven't even announced anything of it," Pitchford said. "Clearly, we're working on something. And I know what we're working on, and holy shit... It's the greatest thing we've ever done. And I can't wait, but it's not time yet. It's not time yet. There will be a time."

Now Playing: History of Borderlands

Gearbox has been releasing "the story so far" video recaps for the Borderlands series on social media, and some believe this is part of a campaign that could culminate in the announcement of Borderlands 4 at PAX East in March 2024. Gearbox is known to make big announcements at the Boston-based show, but as of yet, there is nothing official that points to any announcements from Gearbox at PAX East.

Next up for the Borderlands series is the Borderlands movie, which stars Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, and more big names. The first Borderlands movie trailer will be here any moment.

The Borderlands series debuted in 2009 and has spawned two direct sequels in the mainline series so far, including Borderlands 2 (2012) and Borderlands 3 (2019). A spin-off, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, was released in 2022. There have been other games in the series, too, including titles from Telltale and the additional spin-off, The Pre-Sequel.

Gearbox is owned by Embracer but the Borderlands series continues to be published by 2K Games. Gearbox might not be owned by Embracer forever, though, as the company is reportedly up for sale.
