Borderlands 3 Trailer Includes A Gun With Legs, Tiny Tina, And More

Gearbox's next Borderlands game is on the way.

Gearbox Software has finally confirmed Borderlands 3--revealing the game's first trailer during the studio's PAX East panel. You can watch the trailer, as well as our impressions of it, below. Unfortunately, Gearbox did not announce a release date for the game. However, the developer did promise to reveal more details on Borderlands 3 will come out next week, on April 3. [Update: Before those details can come in, it looks as if Gearbox may have leaked a release date: September 13. You can check out everything we know about Borderlands 3 so far for more info.]

The trailer begins with a shot of the iconic Psycho mask and pans up to reveal that the wasteland is as desolate and full of mayhem as when we last saw it. A Children of the Vault camp is one of the first things we see and next to the entrance there are signs referring to Calypso. One message reads, "Answer Calypso's call," while another invites people to "Meet Calypso." This enigmatic figure is introduced in the very next scene and from her wry grin, overconfident swagger, and snarling sidekick, it's a pretty safe bet to say she'll be one of the key villains of Borderlands 3. For those that know their Greek mythology, Calypso is the daughter of the titan, Atlas. It just so happens that Atlas is also the name of one of the big corporate entities on Pandora, where the Borderland games primarily take place.

Now Playing: Borderlands 3 Is Finally Confirmed - GS News Update

In the next shot, we're re-introduced to Lilith, who made her debut as a playable character in the first Borderlands title. She's a key figure in the mythos of Borderlands, being a Siren--incredibly powerful women that have mysterious backgrounds. It is believed that only six Sirens can exist at any one time and, to date, three have appeared in the games. While it doesn't seem like Lilith will be playable, she will no doubt play a huge part in the events of Borderlands 3.

From there, we're introduced to four characters. These are likely the Vault Hunters players will get to control. As of yet, it's unclear what classes they correspond to. The Borderlands games tend to have a mixture of traditional archetypes like Berserker, Hunter, and Soldier, but also throw some unexpected ones into the mix too, like Siren and Mechromancer. At one point the female Vault Hunter, who looks to be melee-focused, given her ripped physique and knuckle duster, summons multiple ethereal arms like a Bodhisattva.

The trailer quickly rolls on to quick cuts of action, with the four Vault Hunters cruising around in vehicles, firing all manner of strange weaponry--including a battle mech--and taking on vicious looking monsters. At one point Borderlands 2's Maya, who also happens to be a Siren, makes an appearance, though with much longer hair now.

One of the key new features for Borderlands 3 is revealed when the words "Explore the Worlds!" appear on screen. This indicates that the game is going to be much bigger than the previous two entries, offering players a variety of different worlds to scavenge for loot and hunt down mythical treasure in. The trailer showcases some of these, with a neon city that has towering skyscrapers and overgrown swamplands, alongside the traditional Mad Max-like desert terrain.

There's a brief intermission in the trailer for Brick to lay down a sax solo that, frankly, is quite good, before we get to the Borderlands series' biggest claim to fame: guns. This time around Gearbox is claiming that Borderlands 3 will have "one billion guns," one of which is an assault rifle with little robot legs that is skipping along while firing off shots. Basically, the trailer shows off pretty much exactly what most Borderlands fans want from a sequel.

Gearbox has said more information for Borderlands 3 will be revealed on April 3. We don't know exactly what to expect, but the studio says the details will show up on Borderlands.com. If you're wondering what we thought, some of our biggest fans of the series shared their thoughts in a Borderlands 3 trailer breakdown.

The Year of Borderlands will also give fans of the series the opportunity to play a Game of the Year version of the first Borderlands, complete with new weapons and other improvements. Additionally, the Borderlands Handsome Collection is getting graphical improvements by way of a free Ultra HD Texture Pack. This will also be available for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2 on PC. Finally, all Borderlands 2's DLC will be added to Borderlands 2 for PlayStation VR this summer.

Other news out of Gearbox's panel included a trailer for Risk of Rain 2, which is now out in Steam Early Access, as well as a trailer for Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland's new game, Trover Saves The Universe, and the announcement of Bulletstorm for Nintendo Switch.

@xboxfanonly: NO. and Thank God for that !! Nobody cares about Battle Royale except a minor subset of gamers. It's boring, repetitive, and meaningless. After you beat the game, that's it !!! Go play something else. Or if they release DLC episodes then play that. There is enough Battle Royale cancer out there. We don't need any more of that. Give us all the single player experiences we want !!!

@pongman1975: But how do they expect to succeed in the era of battle royale without battle royale? when people finish the campaign, what will they play? dlc? no they need to release a f2p battle royale mode soon after launch to stay relevant with the gen z's becuase they will never have the money to buy the game in the first place, let alone dlc...

@xboxfanonly: Who cares about Battle Royale. Not all gamers like it or play it. A majority of gamers LOVE single player games. Enough with the social gaming bullsh*t. There are enough Battle Royale games out there. ONLY single player experiences moving forward. BL3 will be fun and popular because they chose to ignore Battle Royale.

That Neon lit huge city looked pretty impressive. I'm wondering if they are going massive this game. We'll see. I enjoyed the Borderlands games, but it could get a bit repetitive. Never finished 1 or 2, always enjoyed playing them though.

@supamastergamer: "This looks like Borderlands 2.1"

If you don't understand why so many of us are hyped because of that then you don't understand why so MANY gamers love the Borderlands series and why it will be a huge financial success for Gearbox.

Kinda excited for this despite complete lack of faith/trust in the company.

I even installed the Handosme collection to give 'Zero' a playthrough & maybe play The PreSequel again.

I never finished it becaue it got very repetitive & stale..

Actually I never finished Borderlands 2 either for the same reasons. I played w/ 3 characters & always got bored shortly after the city relocates.... I hope B3 has a better mid-end game. cause once our character has all the skill points then it's up to interesting content to sustain...

I often miss the addicting music of Halloween & Christmas mini DLC.. both we're hella fun..

The Art style has annoyed me since 1st Borderlands.. it makes everything look dated..

As if it's covering up detail.. hope B3 looks impressive & more importantly=plays great

---WHO REMEMBERS A year before Borderlands 1 was released " Game Informer Magazine " revealed the game

w/ a cover story & the graphics weren't this cartoon'ish vibe but had a realistic look to it...it was pretty epic looking..

I tried to find that issue or ever pictures of it whith no success... StarWars MMO The Old Republic did the same thing.

The MMO had a realistic look to it & Bioware switched it up & people we're pissed. the lighsaber instantly wen't from lifelike to over sized & kinda silly. (at this time myself & many we're hyped on TheOldRepublic as we didn't know Bioware went to mediocrity)

rip Bioware

They are fun games to be sure, but I really hope it's not just more of the same. I never finished The Pre-Sequel because coming straight off of BL2 it just got too monotonous. Also, the enemies in two seemed a lot more spongey than in one.

@lionheartssj1: I sure hope it is. Great action. Great RPG mechanics. Highly replayable. Seamless drop-in, drop-out co-op, both online and off, with absolutely no restrictions on things like level and campaign progress. It's practically the perfect game. Why the heck would you want to change that?

@Barighm: I don't disagree. Guess I'm just hoping for some more variety. More vehicles. Flying vehicles maybe? More varied environments. I dunno...not asking for a complete overhaul, just differentiate it a little bit more than BL1 to BL2.

@lionheartssj1: Vehicles is the one thing Borderlands has always sucked at, so I'd prefer they leave those out. I suppose dropping vehicles entirely for mechs would be cool, but it's usually when devs get too inventive is when things go horribly wrong.

I know what I would do for something "new" (ish). Hopefully they got the same idea.

@owizeisme1: you saying this really shows you have never played any of the borderland games before. you can click and pause on each weapon in the trailer alone and see every one looks and plays vastly different. each weapon has its own weapon maker that gives it unique quirks and mechanics. not only that but EVERY gun in the game has different parts thats randomly generated that makes the same gun very different to another variation of the same gun. go look a bl2 and youll see that there is no many guns and gun variation. hence why they say billions because the amount of different guns that can be drop from manufacturer and different parts of those guns can create insane amount of different guns with so many different effects to them.

@owizeisme1: Bingo. Nothing but palette swaps and re-named guns.

People are clamoring for true weapon customization like putting a missile launcher on a shotgun that shoots knives. I think it's a great idea, but I don't see Gearbox implementing it at all, which sucks balls.

@owizeisme1: There's variations that can dramatically change how a gun behaves, so "same gun, different stats" isn't accurate.

Besides, these day "change" inevitably means follow the leader shit that no one wants, so screw that noise. I'll take unoriginal and retrod.

@owizeisme1: You don't.

You buy a $1000 PC every 7 or so years. After spending money on peripherals and $60 a year to play console, PC gaming isn't much more if you stick to the 7 year rule. You could probably even just get away with upgrading your GPU ever 5-6 years until the newest ones no longer support your old chipset.

I just upgraded mine after a long time, but even before my upgrade my rig was superior to console.

Don't get me wrong, I have all consoles and PC. But consoles don't compare to PC when we're talking about the full experience. Consoles are for when I just want to chill on my couch or play a PS4 exclusive or something.

@ecs33: That "full experience" includes maintenance, and it's not like you don't have to replace peripherals on PC, either. Your price also assumes a self build, and let's face it, most people won't do that, so it's actually even more expensive.

I'm not about to agree with the previous guy that consoles "will always be better", but let's not pretend PC is some magical IWIN box that automatically provides the best experience if you're willing to pay for it. It's not. It has its own issues.

@Barighm: It is an IWIN machine if you're willing to pay. My PC setup has an ultrawide 2k monitor (3440x1440) operating at 100hz with Gsync enabled. My 4k TV couldn't do anything close to that, and that's all my console supports (and 4k isn't even 60fps most of the time).

It's like comparing a Ford Mustang and a Ferrari. In the end you get what you pay for. My recent upgrade was $700 (mobo, CPU, memory). A year ago I also got a GTX 1080TI for about $600. So in the last 5 years I spent $1300 for upgrades and have a far more premium experience than I could ever get from my consoles.

I'm not crapping on consoles. For $300-$500 you sure get alot, possibly more value than you get in a PC. But it's crazy to try and say that consoles are in any way comparable.
