Now Playing: Welcome to the Summer Games of Overwatch

Some Blizzard Entertainment games are experiencing connection issues today, August 23, as a result of a DDoS attack against the video game company's network providers.

Blizzard made the announcement through its support channels today. The tweets came from the US and EU regions, suggesting the DDoS attack is not limited to one part of the world alone.

It's not immediately clear which games are affected, though Blizzard said multiple titles are impacted. Additionally, another tweet says Blizzard's sites and forums are "experiencing issues" right now.

This is just the latest DDoS attack against Blizzard. Earlier this month, a similar attack affected all games accessed through Battle.net, including Overwatch, World of Warcraft, and Hearthstone. As of yet, it remains to be seen if any hacking group is claiming responsibility for this latest attack.

Blizzard has also faced a major DDoS attack in April of this year, with Lizard Squad claiming responsibility at the time. Today's service interruption comes on the final day of Overwatch's Summer Games series, which wraps up today at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET.

Some idiot probably got his ass handed to him on Overwatch, then threw his toys out of his pram and did the ddos attack.

Perfect World's games, like Star Trek Online and Neverwinter, also experienced an unexpected outage in service last night. I was wondering if it was some kind of attack. Overwatch going down at the same time is too much of a coincidence.

@Kezzy123: WHat are you talking about? They changed the boxes to give summer items sometimes. How the hell is that a cash grab? It's an EVENT like many other games do.

@Zorlac: @Kezzy123 's complaining, like most kids are since the start of the event, that we can't buy the new items with credits. The only way is to open a box, which either are earned in game or costs money.

Those kids act like Blizzard owe them something and they should get everything they want. They forget that you actually get a lot of that stuff while playing the game. They forget that once you buy the game, every single new maps and characters, other game modes and other modifications impacting the GAMEPLAY will always be free.

And they forget that Blizzard will continue working on the game for years to come without any income coming from the sales of DLC. They can't sustain it only with hoping people will still buy the game 6 months or a year from now. They will eventually run out of steady income. So selling loot boxes with OPTIONAL, COSMETIC ITEMS ONLY is their only way of income to still continue working on the game for years.

Who cares if you didn't get the Genji skin you wanted? It won't impact your enjoyment of the game in any ways. You can't even see your skin while playing except for the weapons! And you can still get them by having fun playing a game you should like whether or not you have nice shiny skins or not.

So, kids, what do you like better? Having COSMETIC stuff you can't buy with credits but can earn by buying loot boxes or earning them in-game and have new GAMEPLAY related things free? Or having all the shiny skins you want for free but have to pay for DLC down the line because these things take money to make?

I don't know you, but my choice is clear.

And to be honest, throwing a tantrum and wanting them to lose money and get hacked and DDOSed because you didn't get what you wanted is really extremely selfish. Yes, you are entitled to your opinions. But Blizzard have the right to do what they want with THEIR games. You don't agree? Fine. Don't buy or play their games. It'll make them lose money that way too and it will show them a lot more efficiently that you don't agree with their way of thinking. DDOS attacks won't.

@indojimbo: Blaming a "cry baby" and "his boyfriends" makes u many things, including homophobic. Down-playing the effects that a DDOS attack has on millions of innocent subscribers helps the attackers continue to get away with malicious, illegal activity. Wake up, World. Cyber-attack is a crime, and it's the fastest-growing and least punished crime in humankind. These illegal actions have real-world ramifications other than me just not being able to play a game that I paid for. They are not benign or innocent actions. The health of the world's Internet can impact the health of the world. Stick your head in a hole if u want, but the more accurate and bold these types of attackers become, the less safe the world becomes.

@tonywalthall: the problem is enforcement. Who can detect and punish these criminals?

I agree something needS to be done, it'sjustamore complex issue that conventional law enforcement isn't equipped or trained to tackle.

@Richardthe3rd: but who will enforce the companies like blizzard who make false advertisement and prey on people with mental disorders to scam money "legally"

@Kezzy123: The Better Business Bureau. But I don't think Blizzard has done anything that would warrant legal action. Also I don't think they're targeting individuals with mental disorders. Their games more target introverts that seek much needed social interaction in games. Those individuals gain self affirmation from owning virtual items that others online can see, so they're more likely to pay money for them or at least be bothered by not being able to obtain them.

@Kezzy123: There is nothing that is flase advertisement in this Summer event story whatsoever. Blizzard said everything GAMEPLAY wise will be free. They're holding up to that. They also said every cosmetic items will be available by playing the game. Guess what? They are. You can;t buy them by credit and the way you get the new skins and stuff is lottery-like. I agree it might anger some people.

But it's NOT false-advertising. Even if they had said that you can buy everything with credit, it's not false-advertising. They changed their minds for some special events. The rest is still available for credits. They are allowed to change their business model as they go along. It's minor. If they had started selling DLC with new characters and map, THEN it would be a major break of their words. But still, it wouldn't be false-advertising.

And not having a shiny Genji skin doesn't warrant the company having to spend resources on those attacks and make millions of people have to wait and not play their favorite games just because some kids didn't like something Blizzard says.

Same things when they DDOS because Blizzard bans them because of cheating. There is NEVER a good reason to hack or DDOS. But those reasons are by far the worst reasons ever to do something like this. Entitled kids, I swear.

PS: When I say kids, I am talking about people ACTING like entitled kids, whether they are 12 or 30yo doesn't matter. If you are a nice 12yo kid, good for you! You're not the "kids" I am talking about in those posts :) You're fine by me!

Yawn another pointless DDOS attack that will probably last a couple of hours at most/won't even affect some people. I dunno it was interesting when they took it down on xmas day but that was pretty pointless too. These Tweens need to get a new hobby or do something useful with their lives like DDOS terroist skype calls or twitter.... ahhh wait nvm these kids wouldn't even know how to find them lmao.

If some group claims responsibility, their name should not be spread. In this article we have the news; that's what matters. Adding their name is just giving them the propaganda and attention to on they crave.
