Battlefield 1 Campaign Details Teased, Dev Says Diversity Is a Key Component

"We wanted to challenge some preconceptions."

New details have to come light regarding Battlefield 1's campaign.

Lead designer Daniel Berlin shared some new information and also spoke about how the game overall aims to shine a light on elements of World War 1 people might not know about.

Now Playing: Battlefield 1 - Announcement Trailer

Talking to GamesBeat, Berlin teased that Battlefield 1's single-player campaign may follow multiple different characters. It "will focus on different stories and different personalities across the world," he said. One of the playable characters will be the Bedouin woman warrior from the announcement trailer.

As for the character on Battlefield 1's cover, an African-American Harlem Hellfighter, Berlin said putting him on the cover was meant to represent EA's overall goal of spotlighting lesser-known elements of WW1.

"When we set out on this game, we wanted to depict not just the common view of what the war was like," he explained. "We wanted to challenge some preconceptions. We want to delve into some of the unknowns of WW1. Maybe people don't know that this person fought or that person fought, that this army was involved. We're stretching out and bringing all those stories into the game."

No Caption Provided

Berlin went on to say that some people did not know the Harlem Hellfighters even existed. The game will focus on highlighting diversity, which also extends to the single-player story.

"We want to show diversity in the game," he explained. "That's been a key goal. You can see in the trailer that there's a Bedouin woman warrior on a horse. She's a playable character in the single-player campaign."

Battlefield 1 comes out on October 21 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. A beta will be held before launch, but there is no word yet on when it will begin. EA or Origin Access members on Xbox One and PC, meanwhile, will be able to play the full game on October 18.

Nothing like taking a crap on history for the sake of shoehorning in women and minorities. I am a female myself and I hate the idea of a woman being in a WW1 game just for the sake of pandering. In fact, women and minorities should downright be insulted by this. Going out of your way to kiss our asses only makes us appear more weak and whiny. We don't need to be catered to. Only the truly weak and whiny expect that sort of treatment. DICE is obviously filled with a bunch of delusional Eurotrash who wished everything was some crazy leftist fantasy. This game is a total turnoff now.

Okay, yeah it'd be nice to see often ignored theatres and or battles of the Great War... But I would happily settle for one that just focuses on the stuff everyone knows about if there's a decent narrative, solid gameplay and it lasts a few hours!

Ugh, I hate this so much. This was one of the reasons I left this site, and am only posting this here, because this is just ridiculous. Why does everyone have to bring politics, racism, racial tensions, feminism, etc. into gaming and entertainment?! It's stupid. And all of you, whether you're anti-white, anti-black, or whatever, are just feeding into it.

"WAH, WAH, black people are disgusting! Whites are superior!"

"WAH, WAH, we need all white men to disappear and rewrite history, just so we can have a bunch of gays and feminists in our games!"

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being black, white, orange, blue, purple, or whatever the hell you want to call yourself. There's nothing wrong with gay people, or women holding prominent roles in entertainment. It's actually a good thing, as long as it fits well and is balanced. Why does everyone need to have such a big emphasis on minority groups in entertainment?! I play games, or watch movies/TV shows, etc., because I enjoy them. I love games. Watching TV is relaxing, funny, etc. Why do we need to bring politics into everything? I hate politics, I hate SJW's, and I hate that everything needs to be like this. For God's sake, race doesn't matter! Gender doesn't matter! Does anybody else agree with me? Am I the only sane person here?

@MVan86: Of course not, but to be honest, the war was mostly fought by "white people". Whether you like it or not. Of course there were black people, women, Asians, etc., but not predominately. Putting a female and African-American character, with probable leading roles, in a game based on WW1, doesn't make much sense. It's clear political agenda and/or just kissing the asses of minorities to show everyone "how tolerant they are".

I am absolutely in no way saying that there shouldn't be African-Americans or women in this game, but this is obviously an agenda.

@MVan86: What's the bet there's no mention of Indian troops, or Cameroon troops, or in fact anyone that isn't the current fashionable non-white male? Specifically African Americans (not Africans straight from Africa itself) and women.

We shall see, but the difference between genuinely wanting to show the full spectrum of war, and just a cheap political move in a suitable climate, is obvious.

There's a black guy in it, who cares? Man, you can spin it however you want but being upset that a black guy is a playable character makes you trash. And this is coming from someone who thinks the SJW movement is generally stupid.

Aaaaand now I remember why I don't come to this website anymore. Holy shit is this community disgusting.

Bunch of white boys whining about the "Anti-White Agenda," like are you kidding me? Game developers add women and people of color to their games and you take it as a personal attack? There is no such thing as an "anti-white agenda." No one is demonizing white people by having black people in a game. If anything the fact that you think that means you should probably reexamine your priorities.

And as always, the solution is simple. Don't like something about a game? Then don't buy it. Complaining about it in news articles will do absolutely nothing. Your wallet is your voice.

@waterguyroks: No one is saying there is an "anti-white agenda" (not the ones I know of at least) and for you to assume that everyone is against this because they're racist is.. wrong

I'm a middle eastern woman, I have no problems with black people and women being presented in games, what I do have a problem with are the characters who are shoved in there just to fill up a "quota" and that is happening a lot recently. Developers have the power to genuinely create characters from different backgrounds in different settings (look at overwatch, amazing game, amazing characters). WWI is not one of them, women and minorities were not prominent in that era and most of the ones who fought were "white European men"

But if they want to include them, that's fine, it's just a game, but at the same time, it really defeats the purpose of it being in WWI and it loses the historical accuracy of the setting, which is part of what makes players immerse, just like how assassin's creed lost its magic a loooong time ago

this is not about not wanting diversity, I couldn't care less about who I play as, as long as the story and gameplay are good, what I do have a problem with however, is the unnecessary inclusion of [insert whomever doesn't fit in the game's setting] just for the sake of..

sorry for bad english, it's my second language :)

@waterguyroks: 'People of color', I just don't get you Americans.

See, anywhere else that is obviously a racist term, because how can a term that shoves all non-whites into a group not be? We have white people, and those 'colored' folk. Yes, even non-white people in America use the term, and I know that it isn't considered wrong there-- but I can't see how that's a sensible term in the very fact that not only does it generalise every non-white race, but it strangely excludes whites and being 'not colored'.

What does it even mean to be coloured, or not coloured? I mean white isn't a colour, but then neither is black; calling far eastern people 'yellow' isn't an acceptable term, and as far as I gather neither is calling native americans 'red', or indians/middle eastern folk 'brown'.

Maybe it's intended to refer to the personality of ethnic people, 'colored' as in quirky? Different? Because that wouldn't be racist at all would it.

Someone explain the sense in using this term.

@waterguyroks: This is about the equivalent of having a white guy on the cover of NBA 2K. About 99% of the people who fought in WW1 were white so again it's just pandering to pathetic minorities who are already over represented. Some user who uses the term "white boys" says there's no anti white agenda..... LMAO that's funny.

@AM-Gamer:

Also your comment is extremely retarded. Over represented??? Are you serious? Video game characters are still majority white you. And your 2K comparison is just as racist and stereotypical. There are white basket ball players in the NBA, just because the NBA may seem majority black does not mean there can't be a white NBA star on a 2K case.

And calling minorities pathetic is not racist. @billzihang See what I mean with minorities randomly taking random stray bullets for no reason because a bunch of babies are throwing a tantrum because developers decided to at some non-white characters.

And dumbass(not you Bilzihang) for your information the "black" character in this game is based off the Harlem Hellfighters who actually have the most spent MORE combat time than any other American unit.

"The Harlem Hellfighters spent 191 days in front line trenches, more than any other American unit. They were the first unit to cross the Rhine into Germany."

http://www.american-historama.org/1913-1928-ww1-prohibition-era/harlem-hellfighters-facts.htm

How's that for some historical accuracy...

@blessedbyhorus: Well, think of it more like this: having an American soldier on the cover of a WW1 game is kind of annoying, a country that joined at the last minute. Most people would be surprised to have a Turkish soldier on the front, but then they played a much larger role than the Americans in WW1.

Considering black people were quiet involved in the American Revolutionary war (many fought for the British which is an interest historical fact, of course with promises of freedom after-- not sure how many actually got it), is it really that much of a surprise they were in WW1?

My issue is of course not having the little known events and people who were in the war-- but I absolutely assure you there will be little or no mention of the Indian forces under Britain, even though they were HUGELY more impactful on the war effort (more troops, longer involvement). How about the 150,000 Algerian troops under France?

Can you see what I mean? In all though, there's nothing wrong at all with just showing some sides of the war people never really consider, but it is kind of lame to appease the obvious 'America had its famous racism in the early 20th century' motif, and not bring in something actually alien to American audiences-- such as the Indian, Algerian or Cameroon troops (of which there were quite a lot, each with hugely complex motives and conflicts within their subject empires). It's just such an obvious choice, when there are literally hundreds of others available.

Just to state again: I am not going to refuse to buy the game because "I don't wanna play some woman or some black guy", as that would be stupid.

Methinks the Harlem Hellfighters were the first to cross the Rhine because frankly, they were ordered to as I'm sure the generals considered a black unit cannon fodder-- so I wouldn't go far as to suggest it was heroism or anything like that. Just to be sure of history, these were oppressed people of course. As of course were the soldiers brought from the European empires, it was common for non-white units to take heavier losses and go in first, because they were frankly considered more expendable. Just to be real here.

It all depends on HOW they portray these things. There's doing it sensibly, and then massively inflating the impact they had on the war in an obvious political effort. Just to be consistent about these things I am a stickler for people who inflate the importance of their own country's contributions to things like WW2-- say totally underestimating how much the Russians did to cripple the German army.

As a side note as a Tommy myself I'd probably play as a French soldier, as crudely I just like the uniform.

@billzihang:

Very good post. Glad to see someone being rational. Yeah I can too admit that it can be annoying that devs would FORCE political stuff on us. And I say this as a black person. I play games just to play them and get out of reality. But just hate it when certain people blame minority for devs THEMSELVES choosing to "diversify" a cast. We didn't put a gun to their heads and force them to.

Anyways yeah blacks in the Revolution war did in fact fight for the British. And yeah I think it would be cool to see an Indian force under the British fighting. I mean India at that time was colonized by the British. Yep I totally get with you mean.

The only part I disagree on is the Harlem Hellfighter part, I believe they did actively want to join the war. Yeah the Generals may have not seem them as heros, but the HH just wanted to show everyone else that they too are Americans and will fight for America.

And if theres anyone who should be complaining it should be the Russians, because most WW2 games(minus WAW) don't have them like you said crippling Germany. Russia almost single handily destroyed Germany and had the most lost. Intsead Russians getting their dues, they are instead portrayed as villains constantly.

PS: The black characters/Harlem Hellfighters are only apart of a DLC. So I think people should chill now.

Oh, I'm not trying to suggest they were forced to sign up (the Harlem Hellfighters). What I am saying though is it's pretty likely the generals on the field will think "Oh, we've got to send in some troops to take this point, it's gonna be pretty tough on the first wave, with heavy losses. Send in the black guys." They would've fought just like any American (it's also likely some may have fought with the extra vigor to prove they are as worthy as any US soldier, as you suggest), of course, but the reality of that time period is generals would have almost certainly seen them as more expendable then the white soldiers.

As far as Indian soldiers go, it's quite extraordinary to learn over 1 million served for Britain, in East Africa as well as Europe. I was wrong about Cameroon serving for France, they were actually Senegalese-- I hope these guys get a mention in the game as well.

My concern is that they will simply depict history wrongly, and make it appear as though America was more progressive by having black soldiers, but Great Britain and France being apparently less so with only whites. The truth is both America and Europe were just as racist, and maybe America being even more so in some respects.

@blessedbyhorus: Except it's not... they make up 13% of the US population and want 50% of the representation. Could there be a white player on the cover of NBA 2K? Sure... has there ever been? I certainly can't recall.

White men were the vast majority of participants in WW1 that is a fact. To this day they make up nearly 80% of combat roles in the US military. But somehow we find it to be a progressive to make sure they are represented less. If you're to stupid to see that fact I can't help you.

@AM-Gamer:

Your post is nothing more than bigotry and I bet if the rules on this site were loose you would be spewing even more bigot garbage. So you're now claiming that blacks are FORCING representation??? Black people did not ask for their to be a black man on the cover. See what I mean with minorities randomly getting attacked for no reasons.

And so what if black people are 13% of the US population. Black people are in almost every main city in the USA, but more important the population number is 40,000,000+. That's MORE than the population of Canada. So just because black people are 13% means there can't be black characters in videos? What about Asians who's population is even LESS! As for the 2K thing I'm not going to even bother with that as I know its just another more of your silly bigot strawman.

And did you even bother to read the source I posted? I guess not. Yeah indeed WW1 had most "white" participants, but those were from Europe. However, the Harlem Hellfighters, an African American unit from America had the MOST combat out of any unit during WW1. Which is why I think they were added.

@blessedbyhorus: and SJW spewing the terms racist and bigot... LMAO what a surprise.

They never asked for the cover? Lmao are you serious? They ask for everything and sometimes they don't have to because pathetic liberal beta males give it to them for no reason. If you make up 13% of the population and 40% of pop culture that's called over representation. It's not rocket science. And what about Asians? They are represented in many games.. because they actually make games. They don't need to cry about not being represented.

You also dodged my question... when's the last time a white guy was on the cover of NBA 2K?

@blessedbyhorus: It's not complaining about the fact, when will you people ever learn?

It's complaining about the heavy handed implementation, and the strong possibility that it's done for warped political reasons, rather than genuine historical interest.

Did GTA 5 sell badly because it had a black playable character, or indeed GTA SA that only had a black character? NO, because it was implemented in a sensible non-political way. Did Perfect Dark, did Alien have trouble selling as a film?

It's too soon to tell, yes, the nature of how it's done.

BUt you really need to get your head out of your arse and understand that the issue people have, even if they misjudge, is not the fact of having women and non-whites in games, rather it is the perceived method of 'using them for political agendas'.

@waterguyroks: Well if you dont want to come back nobody will mind.

And yes purposely removing white people from a game because they are white men is racist problem is not they are adding people of color but that they are doing so to make game "less white" intentionally. I don't see how that is any better than segregation of last century only difference is the tables are turned. If you cant see the anti-white agenda going on you are blind because the media demonizes white men constantly. Anti-white racism is not only accepted by mainstream media its encouraged.

@excelsiorauctor: I don't see how using a black guy in a game (which may also still have white characters) is equivalent to segregation, back when black guys were being hung from trees or lynched. That this game is probably historically inaccurate is one thing, but how that is remotely like segregation I don't see it.

This sounds more like someone's hurt sense of entitlement to me.

As I said problem is not the existence of minorities in the game it's that they are being forced into game in an historically inaccurate context to intentionally make it "less white." If EA added fake white characters to next NBA game to make it more diverse people would be calling it racist so "adding diversity" really just means "too many white men."

What "sense of entitlement?" Are you just throwing out political phrases not even knowing what they mean?

"Diversity" is just a buzzword thrown in to appease games media and progressive hangers on.

I don't think gamers are that hung up on if one of the protagonists is a Bedouin woman or Harlem Hellfighters, if its part of history then by all means.

Kinda makes it seem shallow when you want a parade because you put diversity in though.

I don't know about you guys, but I always love random social undertones in my online shooters.

Its comforting to know that there's history behind the premise of blowing someone to bits.

I'm hoping Bethesda gets around to exploring just how misunderstood cacodemons are in Doom.

Was there a strong demand for "diversity" in BF games?

When will you all realize that white people are inferior because old white men and college white girls say so?

Personally, i'll be buying the game day one (which i dont do) but i support the devs in this whole heartedly.

For those who dont like it, dont buy it, i certainly dont want to play with a bunch of whiny little cunts anyway.

You'd think that on a gaming site; any mention of 'diversity' wouldn't be followed by a racial shitstorm... in 2016 no less. Nope; it's the internet and all the little racist cowards hiding behind their anonymity are out in force... Typical.

While I do like the setting, as WWI is almost untouched in the genre; I still think EA is trying a bit too hard to be politically correct. Just make a good game anyway you see fit and I don't think people would care too much about the colour of the character's skin or their gender except for the obviously racist retards and misogynists.

@BigFeef: There are much more prominent fronts and groups in WW1. Making the main story revolve around groups just because of their diversity is just bs. US barely joined WW1 near the end of it and suffered the least amount of casualties and there are 0 I repeat 0 prominent bedouin womans warriors let alone any woman warrior at all. Bedouins also barely fought in a similar fashion and even much less than US. I hope this is just a marketing campaign and we actually see real and important battles instead of this bs.

@origamibomber: The way they are talking about it does seem like they shoe horned it in to pander to the social justice crowd.

I suspect its a marketing angle.

You know, I'm all for diversity, but when a developer has to make a big deal out of it, it just comes across as them pandering for brownie points.

Pretty sure that Bedouin Arabs would be the last group on earth where you would find a strong female empowered soldier.... maybe if she had escaped from her slave harem, killed a few guards, and was on the run. I might believe that. But I don't think that's what we'll get from P.C. E.A.

@Rufus_the_rat: And I'm pretty sure you don't know much about Bedouins...
