Avatar Director James Cameron Offers Update on Its Four Sequels

Cameron and on and on.

James Cameron is a director who takes his time between movies, and it has now been almost seven years since Avatar broke worldwide box office records. The director has been working on a sequel since then, and is currently promising no fewer than four follow-up movies. In a new interview, Cameron provided an update on the progress of the Avatar sequels.

Speaking to Variety, he explained that while he was still aiming for a 2018 release for the first film, this wasn't set in stone. "We haven't moved that target yet, but we will if we need to," he said.

"The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern," he continued. "I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it's an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we're able to fulfill on that promise."

Cameron also gave a hint as to what the Avatar sequels might be about. "The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children,” he revealed. “It’s more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans."

The first Avatar earned $2.7 billion worldwide, making it the most successful movie ever made in terms of box office earnings.

Cameron's adaptation of the classic manga Battle Angel Alita is also moving forward. Sin City's Robert Rodriguez is directing from Cameron's script, and last month it was reported that Spectre villain Christoph Waltz had joined the cast. While no official release date has been announced, the film is expected in summer 2018.

Haha, lololol, kekek , FOUR sequels.

High-larious I tell you. The only entertaining moment of the first movie was watching Giovanni Ribisi try to be a douchey businessman when the dude is only like 5'2 and hard to take seriously as a bad guy.

Other than that, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver's characters both died. And Michelle Rodriguez, I think. I hope. If I want to see Zoey Saldana I have plenty of movies to choose from.

I barely made it through the first one. Love some of Cameron's other films, but this was total crap.

The first movie took 12 years to make. It's been 7 years since then and still no second movie. He's saying there will be five movies total? When can we expect to see them? 2040 for the 5th movie?

James Cameron is possibly the only person not working for Marvel (and Fast and Furious) who actually gets the imperious behind tent-pole movies which is both why Avatar broke the records it did and why he's taking so long to come out with the continuing story.

While the original story was not new by way of major surprises what attracted us about the first movie was the use of technology to create a very enjoyable visual experience. This will not be the case (as much) this time around, so to contribute to the same caliber of success I believe he relying on a very involved story which if true will confirm yet again that we will support a product in motion picture entertainment as long as it is a well written story. Excelsior!

Well since he ripped off pocahontas with the first one, I would assume he will rip off Pocahontas 2 with the first sequel movie.

I'm still confused about Disney's Animal Kingdom removing the childrens themed area to put in "Avatar Land." What itch, for anybody, is that going to scratch? At least Camp Minnie-Mickey had a draw.

I wonder if he wants the films to be in VR in theaters. That's just the kind of crazy innovative thing he could be thinking of. I don't know why people scoff at these sequels. They forget how great he is with sequels. T2, Aliens, the man knows how to follow up with style.

@Bread_or_Decide: He pretty much said that VR sucks, and he has no interest in it.

In this release rate the story will continue until all who saw it on Cinema will be dead and gone. Taking it that Cameron is Immortal or already finished with the Movies but waiting with releasing them.
