Avatar 2 May Have a Release Date

Will the sci-fi sequel arrive in December 2018?

James Cameron has been talking about his Avatar sequels for a long time, but the first of these is yet to be given an official release date. While this still remains the case, Fox has now scheduled a movie from Cameron's production company that may be the follow-up to his 2009 sci-fi blockbuster.

As Deadline reports, the studio has set a date of December 21, 2018 for a film from the director's Lightstorm Entertainment. Avatar 2 has been rumoured for Christmas 2018 release for some time, and Cameron himself has spoken about his hopes to have it ready by then.

In September, the director was asked about the movie arriving in December 2018. "We haven't moved that target yet," he told Variety. "The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. I want them to be released as close together as possible.

"If it's an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we're able to fulfill on that promise."

Earlier this month, Cameron revealed that he hoped to make Avatar 2 and the preceding three films in glasses-free 3D. "I'm going to push," he said. "Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range and high frame rates--the things we are working toward. I'm still very bullish on 3D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen--with no glasses. We'll get there."

The first Avatar earned $2.7 billion worldwide, making it the most successful movie ever made in terms of box office earnings.

Isn't Gone With the Wind technically the biggest ever?

@kyelo: No its not, it was the only quality movie to see at the time, hence it sold alot of tickets. If Avatar was the only quality movie to see for several years, it would have had similar numbers.

@kyelo: In terms of tickets sold? Yes. Gone with the Wind is virtually unbeatable.

This should of been released like 2-3 years after the first one when people still cared about it. It will probably flop like other revivals of franchises like terminator and independence day

@gamingdevil800: Comparing Avatar and Avatar 2 (9 years between) to Terminator and Terminator 5 (31 years between) is ridiculous. If you have to compare the two franchises, compare them to Terminator and Terminator 2 (7 years between) - or better yet, just don't.

This is the biggest bit of non-news I think I've ever seen; so some film may be released in 2 years (really? 2 years??) and it may just be a film that's been talked about for years and everyone knew was coming. But we're not sure.

In other news; "next year, starting in January (as they usually do), some films will be released! And some games!" You heard it here first.

GS - please stick to the gaming stuff; this is a new low in online "news".

Does anyone honestly care about this franchise anymore? By the time this comes out it will be almost a DECADE since the original. 3D has all but died since then and that was the only thing that made the first one successful. Absolutely no way the sequels will pull in anywhere close to the same money.

@dryvlyne: don't care about the franchise now and didn't care about the franchise then. i was underwhelmed by the movie... that being said, anything with cameron's name on it gets me excited so i have hopes he will make a sequel that far exceeds the first movie. at least i hope. i'm far more excited about battle angel alita and he is only producing that one. as for the money, ticket prices have gone up a fair amount since 2009 so i expect an avatar sequel to rake in even more money than the original.

Telling the World about a release 2 years from now, that MIGHT happen. That's just evil.
