The movie is directed by Justin Kurzel, who recently helmed Macbeth, which also featured Fassbender in the lead role. His Macbeth co-star Marion Cotillard will also appear in the Assassin's Creed movie, alongside Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and Michael Kenneth Williams.

Earlier this year, Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet explained that Fassbender's role in the production would go beyond simply playing the lead. "We told him we were going to build the project together," he said. "We have a huge brand and we want to make a make a film with references to feature films like Batman Begins and Blade Runner. He was promised that he could work with the writers, we would associate it with all key creative choices."

The Assassin's Creed movie is produced by New Regency and 20th Century Fox and is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2016. That's just one week after the first Star Wars spinoff movie Star Wars: Rogue One.
