Assassin's Creed May Not Have Yearly Releases When It Returns, Ubisoft Says

Chief exec Yves Guillemot indicates Ubisoft is rethinking Assassin's Creed's release strategy too.

Ubisoft has indicated the Assassin's Creed franchise may not resume its yearly release cycle when it returns.

On February 11, Guillemot confirmed Ubisoft would not be releasing a new entry in the series in 2016, ending a seven-year trend that started with Assassin's Creed 2. Instead it is taking time off so that it can be re-examined and evolved.

Asked during a presentation during Ubisoft's Investor Day whether Assassin's Creed would be yearly releases when the franchise is re-introduced, Guillemot said releases would be "regular" but didn't commit to the yearly cycle.

"The goal is not automatically to come back on annual cycle but to come on a regular basis," he said. We saw it was time to give it lots of time so [developers] could really work on the property and all the mechanics to make sure we could take [the series] to another level.

He added: "What we are seeing today is promising. We will be able to come on a regular basis [but] we can't say every year.

Later on in the presentation, chief financial officer Alain Martinez suggested the franchise could eventually return to yearly releases.

"We have focused one of our best teams behind what we are working on Assassin's Creed. We have given them all the time for releasing something that we hope to be exceptional. We are setting up rules so that they will have enough time to polish the game and come with something really exceptional, so this is what we have for our first priority.

"Then after that, if we feel like we are in the right direction and that we can continue the path and we have enough innovation for the next one, we might come with the next one in the next year. But it's no longer something that will be set up every year."

The company previously explained the decision to give Assassin's Creed a break would allow its designers and developers to make better use of modern technology. On the current console generation, Ubisoft has released Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed Syndicate.

"[In 2016] we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin's Creed franchise. As a result, we've decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016," it said.

"Since the release of Assassin's Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We've also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin's Creed a premier open-world franchise. We're taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin's Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone's playground."

The next big Assassin's Creed game is rumored to be set in Egypt and is reportedly called Assassin's Creed Empire. Fans have speculated that it may be set during the Spanish Inquisition and tie-in with the upcoming Assassin's Creed movie, but during the Investor Day presentation Martinez ruled this out.

"The next Assassin's Creed won't be about the Inquisition," he said. "That doesn't mean there will never be an Assassin's Creed about the Inquisition, but we do feel it was wiser to give the creative freedom on the movie, so therefore there is not a great immediate tie-in between movie and games."

Watch Dogs 2, meanwhile, is expected to launch before the end of Ubisoft's next financial year, which is April 2017, the company said. It will be joined by For Honor, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

@sepsis216: I'm sorry, but Assassin's Creed II is vastly over rated. The series in no way went downhill from there. AC Brotherhood, AC Revelations, AC III, AC IV Black Flag, AC Rogue, and even AC Syndicate were all successful. Only Unity was the one they did poor on and even then, that was only at launch. Sure the story of it was lackluster, but they learned from that mistake.

@sepsis216: I agree. I liked Rogue for the most part even though it was only 6 sequences instead of the 12/13. But I thought the naval combat was way better done than 4. But yes, 1 was great, so was 2, and then they started this every year we have a new game which gives little time to build the hype and improve or revolutionize everything. They should've just quit after 3 because that was a disgrace to the AR.

Great news for me. I couldn't keep up with the yearly release schedule and all the side games. Maybe now I can catch up on the main story line.

it's clear they have burn the franchise out and are running out of ideas where to take it, so why not slow it down and move some of the other dev around to work on other projects...

I hope that having a movie doesn't bring down this franchise's quality even more. I know that the game series came first, but there seems to be some game-movie curse that brings down both forms of media.

And then they launch Far Cry Primal next week - a 15 month reskin of Far Cry 4 and ruin that franchise.

A sensible move for a long proud franchise that has become somewhat frazzled of late. This is also a good time to reevaluate seeing as Syndicate is a strong return to form for the series.

This is awesome. I was worried that the gaming industry as a whole would get pressured into this "game a year" cycle and the quality would diminish as was evident in Assassins Creed. It's refreshing to see that, instead, fans are pressuring the gaming industry into doing the right thing, slowing down their development cycles, and focusing on quality over quantity. The fanboys who are pissed about this were apparently blinded by their fandom and unable to see that a game-per-year release cycle was clearly leading to repetitive and formulaic games filled with obnoxious glitches. I might actually come back to Ubisoft games after I swore them off post-AC Unity.

@Daelusca: lmao who shit in your cereal? Of course I believe what I wrote because it's the truth. Go back and read all of the statements that came out of Ubisoft in response to all of the backlash after AC Unity. The overwhelmingly negative response from fans forced them to reevaluate how they do things. So maybe do yourself a favor and educate yourself a little bit instead of arguing from a place of complete ignorance for literally no reason, and try not to overwork your brain in the process. I mean you suck at even trolling behind the anonymity of the internet, I can't imagine you have a ton going on upstairs.

@CMMNDO: Trolling? I am responding to an idiotic comment in the subtlest way I can; I could have brute forced the argument by pointing out your obvious limited intelligence (on this issue, but I doubt that's its extent) should preclude you from commenting...." I was worried that the gaming industry as a whole would get pressured"...it takes some type of noob to be (i) worried for the gaming industry, (ii) think that console/ pc gaming encompasses the whole of "the gaming industry"; or (iii) think a few haters would pressure a company like Ubi into doing or not doing something....your contentions, along with your intelligence is laughable.

That's good, they didn't pump out AC2 in a rush after the first and that period of development really showed in 2.

That is horrible news, I looked forward to every November playing my favorite game. Even with a few glitches, the game was still amazing and this is why true lovers of the game bought it in the millions. Don't make us wait too long Ubisoft, and if not for 2016, I ask that you go back to the yearly release.

Funny enough I love Syndicate so far and was looking forward to the next game. Now I have to wait 2 years. I never cared if AC came out every year as long it was still a good game.

It's interesting how Guillemot changed his mind on the whole AC thing. Only a year ago or so he said he had no intention of slowing down the franchise, since the gamers were, supposedly, asking for more. Guess he was wrong. And I'm quite glad to see this franchise taking a step back. We need a new AC2.

@camou504: I am enjoying Syndicate more than Black Flag and Rogue. I am enjoying the personalities of the main characters more. I got tired of Black Flag (did not finish) and rushed through Rogue's main story and stopped while I am taking my time in Syndicate. Probably because I am one of the few who didn't take a liking to the naval related gameplay.

Instead of you gamers whining about milking this that, you got no one to blame but yourself. If you wanna tell these greedy Co. to stop milking these games, STOP BUYING Assassin's Creed every damn year, [same for CoD] and Ubisoft, Activision and even EA will finally get the message.

Stop buying these milk franchise and tell'em you mean business that you want new IP's.

@davillain-: Only buy Treyarch's CoD so 3 years for every CoD isn't bad imo.

Stopped buying AC after 4, got boring and samey after that , I imagine there going for a witcher style now thats the in thing lol, as indicated by that recent article somewhere irrc.

How did it take to them to add the possibility to duck, considering it's a stealth game? It's probably a marketing scheme to make the next game sell, but it'd be nice to see a properly assassin's creed game, like Shadow of Mordor ; )
