Assassin's Creed May Not Have Yearly Releases When It Returns, Ubisoft Says

Chief exec Yves Guillemot indicates Ubisoft is rethinking Assassin's Creed's release strategy too.

Ubisoft has indicated the Assassin's Creed franchise may not resume its yearly release cycle when it returns.

On February 11, Guillemot confirmed Ubisoft would not be releasing a new entry in the series in 2016, ending a seven-year trend that started with Assassin's Creed 2. Instead it is taking time off so that it can be re-examined and evolved.

Asked during a presentation during Ubisoft's Investor Day whether Assassin's Creed would be yearly releases when the franchise is re-introduced, Guillemot said releases would be "regular" but didn't commit to the yearly cycle.

"The goal is not automatically to come back on annual cycle but to come on a regular basis," he said. We saw it was time to give it lots of time so [developers] could really work on the property and all the mechanics to make sure we could take [the series] to another level.

He added: "What we are seeing today is promising. We will be able to come on a regular basis [but] we can't say every year.

Later on in the presentation, chief financial officer Alain Martinez suggested the franchise could eventually return to yearly releases.

"We have focused one of our best teams behind what we are working on Assassin's Creed. We have given them all the time for releasing something that we hope to be exceptional. We are setting up rules so that they will have enough time to polish the game and come with something really exceptional, so this is what we have for our first priority.

"Then after that, if we feel like we are in the right direction and that we can continue the path and we have enough innovation for the next one, we might come with the next one in the next year. But it's no longer something that will be set up every year."

The company previously explained the decision to give Assassin's Creed a break would allow its designers and developers to make better use of modern technology. On the current console generation, Ubisoft has released Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed Syndicate.

"[In 2016] we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin's Creed franchise. As a result, we've decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016," it said.

"Since the release of Assassin's Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We've also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin's Creed a premier open-world franchise. We're taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin's Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone's playground."

The next big Assassin's Creed game is rumored to be set in Egypt and is reportedly called Assassin's Creed Empire. Fans have speculated that it may be set during the Spanish Inquisition and tie-in with the upcoming Assassin's Creed movie, but during the Investor Day presentation Martinez ruled this out.

"The next Assassin's Creed won't be about the Inquisition," he said. "That doesn't mean there will never be an Assassin's Creed about the Inquisition, but we do feel it was wiser to give the creative freedom on the movie, so therefore there is not a great immediate tie-in between movie and games."

Watch Dogs 2, meanwhile, is expected to launch before the end of Ubisoft's next financial year, which is April 2017, the company said. It will be joined by For Honor, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

Honest question, why did it take them over 7 years to realize a year off every now and then might actually be GOOD for the series, for sales, and for their bottom line...? Ubisoft has their fingers in so many projects I'm sure they're losing sales on smaller projects by pushing out AC and FC every year, and the quality of AC in particular has been declining steadily over the years. It doesn't need to turn into an annualized, rushed POS, get it together and actually build on the franchise instead of tossing in a new gimmick or two with each half assed, buggy release.

AC has all the markings of a legendary IP, but they've never really brought it as far as it could be, AC2 is probably still their best effort.

Don't return it if you still haven't change the gameplay mechanics: get rid of the clunky movement controls and outsource the combat system to a japanese developer (Capcom or Platinum, as most west developers suck in developing proper melee combat). Give us a plot that is actually interesting with characters you actually give a f*** with (or outsource the story to Bioware Studios / Obsidian Entertainment). Get rid of the repetitive mission design and pointless collectibles and give us a non-restricted, dynamic open-world with meaningful side-quests (or outsource the open world mechanics to R*/ Bethesda/ CDPR).

As a matter of fact, give me an AC game not made by Ubisoft.

@cboye18: outsourcing to Capcom is about the dumbest idea I've ever heard thus far.

As much as I am burnt out with the Assassins Creed franchise and annoyed with their execution when it comes to releasing games of late, Ubisoft is still a game development studio that takes risks and always tries to bring something new and fresh to the table.I just hope that they learnt from their lessons of poor execution and return to what they really capable of.

Im glad Ubisoft decided on taking a year off the AC franchise cause it really needed a break. On the other hand, I wonder why they feel the need to keep making them rather than putting effort into a new IP. Guess its easier to fire out sequels.

After III/IV they were saying that they will just forget about the underlying plot and make games because the reception is good and they have lots of material to work with, around that point things started to go wrong. Now they say they will rethink.

Sounds just like Saw and other disasters. They come up with a nice idea but then they think they have something with unlimited possibilities and then they need to take cover in bunkers when it all hits the fan. I wonder what they will do because it doesn't seem like there is right answer. But sales have been good anyway so I don't think they worry so much.

It's hard because when I think about my game ideas they have clean ends. I can't imagine just making infinite spinoffs and squeezing new made-up sequels before the ending.

@silversix_: Listen. I'm by no means what you call "dudebro", but I do like Ubisoft's games. Is there anything wrong with that? Is there anything wrong with people enjoying games? Maybe you should find something else to do, or if you consider video games a hobby, find another hobby, since you clearly don't like playing games. You only like annoying and tearing down other people, right?

Wonderful news! Take your time, Ubisoft. I enjoy the AC games but even as a die-hard fan, the yearly release cycle is definitely damaging the franchise. Syndicate definitely put the series back on track after Unity.

Good, I think a break is necessary. This will give me time to finish Syndicate and then go back to Unity and tackle some of the side quests.

Again like I said when they announced they were taking a year off. I am happy about this and it gives me hope for future Ubisoft franchises but it's far to late for Assassin's Creed in my opinion. While I loved the series initially it's just been done to death and while I hope this leads to better games for those who do still like the series I simply have no desire to continue with it.

@lnception: Haha. Well the only reason Ubisoft is making this decision is because of lowering sales. That has not been an issue yet for Call of Duty as it continues to sell more than almost every other game. Once sales stop, CoD will stop.

@moose-fitz: CoD has been selling less in the past few years, and I imagine the series sales have peaked for good, but I think it's a World of Warcraft situation, where CoD can see a steady reduction in sales for many years and still out perform most every other competing franchise.

Should just rethink the entire franchise at this stage.

The problem with yearly releases is that yes we get sick of them but it also stretches the material it actually has into something that doesn't even resemble what it used to be.

Frankly unless something SIGNIFICANT changes for the franchise in general, better combat, revamp the story, make good on the present day missions then I doubt I'll come back no matter how often they are released.

I wouldn't mind a total reboot at this stage because I'm just that sick of Assassin's Creed. The thing is I don't think even five years off will fix that.

I'm an AC fan but I'm happy with this - the series could do with a re-working. Syndicate is actually much better than I thought it would be so that'll keep me going for a while.

Hope they don't bin it completely though...
