Assassin's Creed Unity, the first entry in the series developed exclusively for current-generation consoles and PC, has finally arrived. More than 10 studios worked on the game, which also introduces four-player co-op to the series for the very first time.

We already know what Conan O'Brien thinks of Unity, but how did the game fare with critics? Check out a sampling of review scores and editor opinions about Unity below. And be sure to read GameSpot sister site Metacritic for more on the game's critical reception.

Another new Assassin's Creed title, Assassin's Creed Rogue, was released today across Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Check back later this week for GameSpot's review of that title.

GameSpot -- 7/10

"Is it the next-gen Assassin's Creed game we've all been waiting for? Not quite. It's very good, maybe even great in places, but the story's smaller focus has come at the expense of its exquisitely rendered backdrop. The grandness and spectacle that so often graces the finest Assassin's Creeds is sadly sorely lacking here." - Mark Walton [Full review]

Joystiq -- 2.5/5

"Assassin's Creed Unity is the best and worst of Assassin's Creed. It's hard not to appreciate everything that it gets right, and you'll have a good time if you can wrangle some friends for co-op, but it's impossible to ignore where Unity falls tragically short." - S. Prell [Full review]

GamesBeat -- 91/100

"I was not expecting to love Unity, but I do. Ubisoft nailed the big assassination missions and everything in between. I lost several days to this game, and I'm looking forward to losing a few more. I want to see if I can find all the highest-rated equipment. I want to do some more multiplayer missions. I want to solve the rest of those brilliant murder cases. I want more Unity." - Jeffrey Grubb [Full review]

GamesRadar -- 4/5

"Unity manages to push the series forward enough to make this truly great, it's only sad that a few left over hiccups have carried over from the previous generation. Traditional Creed problems aside, this manages to be an unrivaled murderous sandbox and Paris hands over a visually impressive blood drenched historical playground." - Louise Blain [Full review]

GameInformer -- 8/10

"Inordinately long load times, repeated onscreen notifications, and a couple of hard freezes prove that Unity is a complex game that hasn't yet had all of its bugs smashed. However, Unity's frequent missteps are balanced against an astonishing array of engaging content set in a stunning world. Even as I tallied problems, I marveled at the game's breadth of gameplay and richly realized world. I encourage fans to give Unity a try, and leave your expectations at the door. For both better and worse, Assassin's Creed is moving in a new direction." - Matt Miller [Full review]

IGN -- 78/100

"Assassin's Creed Unity leverages the new-generation consoles to add spectacular new sights and successful co-op multiplayer, but in doing so, it's created some substantial new problems instead of solving the series' most persistent ones. The scope is stunning, the customization is satisfying, and the multiplayer touches upon some really ambitious ideas. But the lack of a strong main character or interesting take on the Assassin's Creed universe costs it momentum and excitement, and the persistent control problems are still a thorn in its side. The first truly new-gen Assassin’s Creed game is a gorgeous, entertaining, and successful proof of concept for what lies ahead for the series, though it isn't what I'd call revolutionary." - Marty Sliva [Full review]

Polygon -- 6.5/10

"The ingredients are all here for a spectacular new standard for the series on Sony and Microsoft's new machines. But in the quest to build something that looked and sounded 'next generation,' Ubisoft Montreal failed to fix the problems that have accumulated over so many annual releases. Combined with an uninspiring story, and a long list of considerable technical problems, Unityfalls short of the fresh start Assassin's Creed needs." - Arthur Gies [Full review]

not going to lie this game looks absolutely stunning and has the potential to be one of the best assassins creeds ever made. however I haven't even been able to complete the game, in fact I even have a hard time trying to start it because it makes me so angry. the bugs, the freezing, the brutal load times, and especially the bullcrap microtransactions (all thanks to call of duty and those stupid phone apps and mobile games for turning that into the norm to get extra money out of people) and that Assassin's Creed unity companion app are an absolute kick in the nuts. if this is how ubisoft is going to treat its loyal fans, I hope these comments give them a major reality check because this is an absolute outrage.if they get rid of the microtransactions and clear out the bugs and speed up the load times a little bit this game would be freaking good...but only time will tell if Ubisoft will have the decency or the brains to actually do it....

Currently playing Shadow of Mordor. A little Assassin's Creed goes a long way with me, and SoM is definitely meeting my parkour/stealth/action needs but in a possibly cooler setting, with the sweet nemesis system (great, innovative idea, seriously) and no bugs so far.

Plus I'm guilt free about rewarding Ubisoft for putting out yet another game stuffed with bugs, microtransactions and annoying pop-ups. Win!

Rented and played this game for about 12 hours on both the PS4 and XB One, mostly to see which one I'd buy; and decided to pass on it completely. The 7/10 score GS gave this game is being very generous and I really can't see how anyone can score this 91/100.

We have wonky controls (still) and a fancy parkour mode makes things even worse now, frequent and long loading screens, and constant lag that usually ends up making combat a chore because of missed button presses and adds to the movement frustrations. Add to that the slap in the face micro-transactions, the separation of activities like assassin recruitment from the main game to an app coupled with their bungled attempt to include that app's activities into the main game, and the same repetitive copy/paste side quest and collectibles. And it all adds up to make your map a cluttered mess.

This game is easily the worst game of the main AC series, which is saying a lot. Way to go UbiSoft; you've finally found a way to ruin the Assassin's Creed franchise.

This just in. You can buy Helix points for 120 $ in order to buy more frames per second. Additionally for 50 $ you can get additional 180p to get to 1080p. Problem Solved!

Just what I thought would happen when this was announced.

Assassin's Creed Rogue looks the far better of the two in terms of fun gameplay.

See my reply to diablohitman above... If this answer does not satisfy you.

I meant just that... It looks more fun.

What is so hard to understand about that?

The original Resident Evil games (1&2) have more fun game play FOR ME, than that of say Resident Evil 6, and yet RE1&2 look crap compared to RE6.

"Unity has many more improvements and is way better," you say, well okay but that's a bit vague is it not? I was talking about a game that is more fun, not what improvements it may or may not have.

If you prefer Unity then I'm not going to question you about it. Go enjoy it, have fun with it and get your money's worth, I don't care what it is that makes it way better for you, only why it doesn't work for me.

that's not really the problem. the problem is Assassin's Creed unity has so many problems that outweigh its benefits that assassins Creed rogue is the more popular game because it stuck with the tried-and-true engine and has a more interesting storyline and doesn't have all the stupid microtransactions and stuff. honestly I was expecting that to happen because I've noticed how much advertisement went into Assassins Creed unity

<< LINK REMOVED >> rogue story was nice but most of that could have been prevented if shay would have used his head a little bit and explained things arnos story felt natural but most critcis didn't have a problem with bugs they got on the fact it didnt change enough yet loved rogue which is an excat copy of 4 with new areas as for the microtranstions have been there for a while not just in unity but you dont need them at all if your lazy sure go ahead i did everything in unity without ever using it

<< LINK REMOVED >> well first those aren't microtransactions both of those are free but even so you dont need any of that for the main game or achievements all thats in those chests is some extra gold (not really much at all) and the legacy gear the legacy gear being mostly though initates which makes sense as it rewards people who played the old games with the assassins outfit from that game (i.e ezio or altair) but thats just some extra look that you dont need at all

Have I offended you? I'm saying that between the two, AC Rogue looks far better in terms of being the more fun game of the two.

It's a personal choice is it not? The idea of playing AC with 3 other players is a huge off putting idea FOR ME in what I like from games.

There is no reason why this should be "Killing," You or anybody else for that matter.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> oh no you didnt offend me and oh its definitely personal choice im not trying to say your choice here doesnt matter. My comment was more commenting on the fact that people are ripping apart unity for not innovating and changing enough while praising rogue despite it not innovating at all and alot of the "con" ive seen with reviewers have been personal preference (i.e one guy says amazing story another was liek eh it was meh)

i said killing meaning its cracking me up how critics were saying that but yes its definitely what you prefer.

That's fair enough.

I get so many replies from GS Users getting all upset that I don't like the same things as them, then treat it as if I am personally attacking their choices, that was what I thought you were doing.

I believe Assassin's Creed would be finished by now (or at least on it's way out) if it wasn't for AC IV being so much fun being a pirate. Then they removed all of that stuff and add 4player co-op, make it look visually better but there is no real incentive for me to go back to another Assassin game, unlike AC IV did.

Meanwhile another, less powerful game comes out alongside their new show piece that does have all that cool stuff from AC IV, although it may look and play like crap compared to AC Unity, it has something in it for me that has me interested... Pirate lore, ship warfare and I don't need a fancy new rig to play it.

That's maybe part of why reviewers are being so harsh to Unity, as it seems to be a less impressive package in comparison to it's older brother of AC IV and now AC Rogue.

I don't know any of this as facts, I just say this to explain my original post above... As I had a feeling that it would be less interesting game for me to play and yet it was on Next Gen, while the more interesting one was on Old Gen.

By the end of 2015, I wouldn't be surprised if Rogue ends up being ported up to Next Gen, just to keep the interest alive.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> i can see that happening

I love unity so far and i've been dieing for co-op and its alot of fun however i know thats not for everyone
I think thats what the real "issue" is unity plays like 1 and 2 (which i love) goes back to the assassins and has the city to explore and adds what we've been wanting since then. on the other hand some people feel off after 2 and only got back on for 3 and 4s new naval system and it provides a fun experience for them and adds that cool mechanic to the assassins and templar conflict. Unity doesn't have anything to replace the "fresh" (i say it like that cuz its the 2 game with it 3rd if you count 3) mechanic of naval combat.
This is why i was ok with them releasing two AC games in one year because it catered to both ends of the spectrum. I just didn't expect to see the harshness of the few its apparently you either love or hate it.

any reason why not a single one of these reviews is bringing up the horrible performance? I'd think it's valid to include performance in a review of a game.

<< LINK REMOVED >> How do you define performance? Performance is not just a measure of how many frames you pump out at a given resolution. The quality of the rendering is also a performance aspect. You can always get more frames by lowering the quality. Which do you consider more important? This spec chasing trend is going to be really bad for gaming where marketing departments dictate frame rates and resolutions instead of developers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It has been pointed out several times. If you want to hang on it fair enough. But any avid gamer should expect and understand that there is to be some issues.

I haven't played it so I have no Idea how it plays for me and I don't want to say how it will. But for example. Watch dogs worked for me without issue. Majority of people with issues were those using Sli or AMD graphics cards. Tons of complaints made constantly at launch about it. Yet people still pilled on about it. There were explanations given... part of the problem is peoples inability to be patient and expect performance problems.

In a perfect world of course none of that would happen but it does, and with a majority of games... not just Ubisoft. It's the typical console gamer attitude. Yes there can be issues on console, they also need to receive updates usually to iron out a few things. And I doubt they can properly stress test the networks which is why they always have issues on launch.

Look at Blizzard.. any new game/expansion that comes out the game and servers are always down and its consistent throughout the first couple of days of release. If not it lasts longer. Blizzard has a pretty respectable reputation for its technical abilities and sorting these things out. Ubisoft hasn't really bothered me that bad. I usually turn multiplayer side of it off and play offline especially on a new launch.

reality check: it's xmas time, but are you so young or dumb enough to believe santa's gonna be coming through the chimney?

everybody did his job, ubisoft telling, the best realease to assassin's creed to date, pr people saying "this time hardcore fans of the franchise will be pleased and amazed", gamesites did deliver day one reviews for a game that took years to achieve and of course fanboys whith the usual band of haters.

7/10 is is not a bad score nor a excellent one, it just fit absolutely right for an annualized IP.

why dont you wait a bit and get it from steam sale?

by theses times, the whole concept of "old" game is just pointless, there are so many great games to play.

game industry is like movies, how long will be waiting to see something new and brillant?

have you played every great game so far?

of course you did'nt.

i am one of these "lucky" basterds who have nothing to day every day but playing games.

and with mordor shadow, advanced warfare or the evil whithin, playing at last 8 hours every day, to only name 3, i cant follow the production.

dont be a fool, dont be a tool and take some time to make an idea of pros and cons of a game by yourself.

the one title i spent 70 bucks this year is elite dangerous.

the gaming industry face what happened to comics, movies before them: there just here to sell advertisment space whith so few creators.

take gaming for it is, just average fun and rarely masterpieces or just put milk and cookies beneath the xmas tree to engross the already overwheited man in red pyjamas.

to choice is yours, ours and merry xmas, hannuka of anything that can can unite people in these hard times to live.

oh, i just fogot happy rob-hannuka since it's te most sacred date of the years for robots like bender rodriguez^^.

@jenovaschilld oh oh stop please, i did'nt intent to offense anyone.

i am atheist, for various personnal reasons, i take note of my mis-spelling of hanukkha.

i was just adding my two cents to the debate, i'm french i'm 50 years old and i did learned english by myself.

i did worked more than 30 years in video games and the main reason about learning english was understanding comics, movies and of course video games.

i can read more than 6 six languages including latin, ancient greek and some japanese, which is not that bad.

i just want to say gaming is not about fanatics slaves to a system, evolution need competition and last year underdog can become the outsider of the next.

as i said, happy new year, wathever are your beliefs.

as kojima said, the most important thing is loyalty to the end; yesterday ennemy can become today's best buddie.

I bought a ps4 copy, haven't had time to play it yet. But reading about the performance on either console I should have opted for the pc version probably. Even though i prefer to play games like this on the couch on the big tv, I do prefer a playable game on my desktop over an unplayable game on my couch. Prime example of unplayable was DR3. I actually got a refund for that game and later bought the pc version wich was a shitty port but atleast runs at rock solid frames and in full 1080p with better textures as a bonus.

The office is to small to have a big screen and I don't want (nor would my wife let me) to move the desktop to the living room. And they are quite far apart to run cables without major work. I have wireless hdmi but other than movies/music it is not optimal for games as there can be input lag on demanding games. Works on simpler games though.
Haven't checked the pc port reports yet. And << LINK REMOVED >>, I do have a beastly rig i74790K, 16gigs of ram, ssd, and nvidia titan black with 6gb of vram. usually that is enough to force crappy ports to atleast keep a stable framerate.

Surprisingly no issues so far. That said, it's nothing mind blowing either except for the visuals - and holy heck are they nice. I expect more problems will manifest as I go along but right now I don't have too many complaints.

1/5 snooze fest with little redeeming qualities and poor rendering.

The one that got bad reviews. All news sites are calling it half baked. It hardly runs at 30fps on high end pcs. Pop in is awful. Unless you're playing it on some amazing pc I don't see it working any better for you.
