Analysts endorse 360 price drops

Industry watchers agree that Microsoft stands to regain ground thanks to cross-SKU cuts, with Nintendo and Sony unlikely to counter.

Yesterday, Microsoft officially confirmed that the long-rumored Xbox 360 price drop first announced in Japan would extend to North American gamers as well. As of September 5, Microsoft's Elite 120GB Xbox 360 SKU will drop $80 to $399, with the 60GB Pro and the hard-drive-less Arcade following in line at respective $100 intervals. The latter SKU is of particular note, as it will effectively give Microsoft the cheapest current-gen console on the market--$50 less than current market leader, the Nintendo Wii.

The price drop is sure to have an impact on the gaming industry, but just how much has yet to be seen. If there's anything that industry watchers seem to be in agreement upon, it's that the cut will shift momentum back into Microsoft's corner and that Sony and Nintendo aren't likely to counter the potentially game-changing move with price cuts of their own.

Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich told GameSpot that Microsoft's $199 SKU puts the company in prime position to halt Sony's surging PlayStation 3. "Microsoft has the industry's best exclusive licenses, such as Halo, Gears of War, and Fable," noted Divnich. "In terms of software, Sony has Resistance and LittleBigPlanet, which can't compare to Gears and Fable 2. So with Microsoft beating Sony on pricing, beating them on library, and beating them on services with Xbox Live, the price cut should shift momentum back to the 360," asserted Divnich.

The EEDR analyst also believes that Microsoft has a lot riding on this drop, especially if it doesn't spark momentum. He cautioned, "It may force them to release hardware before they plan. We probably won't see next-gen [consoles] until 2012, but if this plan fails, they may be forced to release in 2011."

With Sony reiterating on several occasions that the PlayStation 3's price will remain fixed in 2008, Divnich joined a chorus of other industry analysts in saying that Microsoft's archrival isn't likely to respond. "Sony has been adamant for the last six months about maintaining its price point," noted Divnich. "This is risky, but Sony just isn't where they need to be in terms of manufacturing efficiency to drop price."

Echoing Divnich's sentiments, USB Ben Schachter noted, "We believe any cut from Microsoft aims to slow Sony's momentum before first-party PS3 releases in [the second half of 2008] such as LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, SOCOM, and others...Sony is unlikely to cut in response, though, in the unlikely event that PS3 sales significantly slow, Sony might have to reassess."

Stating that he also expects Sony and Nintendo to stick to their guns, Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian turned to what Microsoft stands to gain from broaching the $200 threshold. "Our analysis of historical console sales in the U.S. suggests that price points below $200 can be an inflection point in sales, with appeal to a mass market audience," observed Sebastian. The analyst then demonstrated via bar graph that the PlayStation 2 had its best single-year performance after Sony reduced the console's North American price to $199 in May 2002, helping rack up nearly 12 million system sales for the year.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter believes Microsoft stands to see as much as a 20 percent bump in hardware sales this holiday season as a result of the price cut, assuming the hardware maker markets the drop effectively. "They are certainly going for a piece of the mass market, and seem to have focused on the Arcade model as the central SKU," he observed.

The arcade 360 is a hell of a lot better deal than a Wii and the Pro is nicely priced especially with 60GB, very compelling indeed.

This is awesome! Not only does it allow new 360 owners to come in cheaply, but it also allows those who have a 1st generation 360 to upgrade to the arcade addition that now has an HDMI port and just swap off hard drives.

artson1966 Your kidding right? I have had a 360 for 3 years I don't own a wifi adapter and I use silver which is free (for now I will upgrade for netflix) and also 20gb HDD will be so cheap after a while I am sure it will be less that $30. You do not need a HDD to play live you only need it for video, demos and DLC not live you can play live with a memory card.

Microsoft as done exactly what it needed to do to get its foot in the door. With the momentum Sony had thanks to the PS2 i think THEY should look back onto what went wrong. They should have been outselling the 360 from the start and be in the lead right now. Im sure Sony's system will sell more in the end, but they lost a lot more ground than they should have. Next gen could go either way. I congratulate MS for their brilliant planning, despite their poor hardware.

Lord_artix i dunno about a joke to hardcore gamers yea sure but to people who want a next gen system that has waited all this time this is the perfect oppurtunity. arcade come with a hdmi model 360 a wireless controller a 512MB mewmory card to save games and it comes with 5 arcade games. pretty good deal and since the 20gb is phased out I am sure you can find a used 20gb HDD on ebay for less that 30 bucks so they can always upgrade in a few month if they do want to do demos and such. Live doesn't require a HDD; only demos and videos if they're aiming at casual gamers the arcade doesn't seem like a joke to me.

KnightwingX7 your right, it remains an oppinion. Its not fact just because an analyst says so either though. If someone who is high up says it is now found to be safe to jump from 30 foot heights without any injuries it doesn't mean hes right even if hes got a PhD in jumping down large spaces.

Good move, but I don't know if it's going to stop Sony in it's tracks. Even the pro model of the 360 at $299 lacks Wi-fi and Blu-ray. True, MS has a larger library for it's console, but Sony is gaining ground. As far as the Arcade being cheaper than the Wii? It's not going to impact a system that sells for at least $50 more then retail on ebay and Amazon, while the 360 pro sells for $50 less. If anything, it's a good price for replacements systems for the millions who bought the 360 at launch.

This isn't going to last, Microsoft is going to release a new console eventually because they can't seem to hold a momentum with gamers. They're rushing into things, they need to stop and think for a moment "How am I going to get gamers to buy and play my console?". Sony isn't worried because it knows in the end, consumers will buy the better deal, its library is growing and the PS3 hardware itself is a shining example that Sony is thinking ahead. Something that Microsoft really needs to do.

Buy an Arcade for $199. Buy a cheap Hard Drive off of Ebay. And voila... The people that say the arcade is a joke most be afraid of a little Hard Drive installation huh? Plus if you wanted you can just pony up the $199 subscribe to gamefly for a full year and have access to the most games and its still cheaper then a PS3.

A smart consumer will understand that it still will cost an additional 179.00 to get the arcade compatible to use for MS's famed online service 99.00 for wifi and 79.00 for hard drive. So If the elite dropping to 399.00 is equal to the 40 gig priced with a game to be the better deal. 299.99 for the 60 gig pro maybe the better deal. Only time will tell. I disagree with Halo and Fable being the best first party exsclusives. They really only sell well in the USA not world wide and if it is the US market they want Sony will let them have it all day long. Sony is stead fast at the 10 year plan where as MS will have a new model with in 2-4 years either way. HD gaming is going to be the norm in 2012 and with the 360 unable to produce HD natievely in order to compete with Sony they have no choice but to move up the next model sooner then planned. 720p is currantly because of software with most households getting HD tvs over the next 3 years consumers will sway over to blue ray in droves.

For the dozens of people claiming that the arcade version is a joke, keep in mind it is basically the same PACKAGE as a PS2. A System, a controller (not sure on this one actually), and no hardrive. A memory card or a hardrive is required. Seems familiar no?

This will put the 360 way ahead of the PS3 in sales.

"So with Microsoft beating Sony on pricing, beating them on library, and beating them on services with Xbox Live..." - It's nice to hear an analyst say what most all Xbox 360 gamers feel. See, it isn't biased or being an "Xbox 360 Fanboy" if it is true.

Doesn't change that if you're considering an Arcade unit, you might as well pony up the extra $100 or so and grab a Pro. Seriously, the Xbox 360 Arcade is a joke.
