After 12 Years Of Only Making PlayStation Games, Quantic Dream Is Going Multi-Platform

Quantic Dream is branching out.

Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit developer Quantic Dream recently raised money from Chinese internet company NetEase, at which time many wondered if it meant that the French studio would continue to make games only for PlayStation consoles. Now we know it won't.

Quantic Dream boss Guillaume de Foundaumiere told GamesBeat that while the studio will continue to release games for PlayStation consoles, the exclusivity arrangement is seemingly over.

Now Playing: Detroit: Become Human Video Review

"We will continue to work on PlayStation, which is a platform we love and that we know very well, but we will also consider other platforms as we want to make our creations accessible to as many gamers as possible worldwide, regardless of the platform," he said. "This is definitely a shift for us after 12 years developing exclusively for PlayStation. We are confident we can make a smooth transition [to multi-platform development] while keeping the high level of quality that we target for our games."

As for what Quantic Dream's next game will be, studio founder David Cage said it's "too early" to reveal anything. However, he did tease that the studio is working on a new game engine that will support multiple platforms. The engine is "even more impressive than anything we have done before," Cage said.

He added: "We will keep working on projects that are ambitious and original, building on the genre we pioneered and that we will continue to develop, but we also want to explore new grounds."

Also in the interview, Cage said Quantic Dream wants to become a "global, multi-franchise company" that retains its independence, and raising the money from NetEase will help it achieve that. "We want to keep developing original games in the genre we pioneered, but also expand our audience by being present on all platforms," he said.

Quantic Dream raised an unspecified amount of money from NetEase. The company previously invested $100 million into Bungie to develop non-Destiny games. NetEase also invested $30 million in Second Dinner, a small team founded by Hearthstone developers who are making a Marvel game.

Detroit: Become Human was released in May 2018 as a PlayStation 4-exclusive. It was generally well-received and it set sales records.

Too effing late. They made too many games I wanted to play but won't ever get to. Not going to reward them now for their allegiance to $ony by buying their future games for PC.

This studio makes the worst games, imo. This is one studio I wish would disappear.

They never have gameplay, it's always a dialogue game, and they can't even get that right. You literally walk around and talk, yet it controls like an old Resident Evil title. It's not like your character is moving and dashing all over the place either. They can't even get walking to be smooth, the one thing you actually do in the games.

I still haven't finished Detroit because it bores the hell out of me. It looks gorgeous, but sucks to play. The first 10 mins are the best part of Detroit.

The sad part is, that's their best game. I kept hoping they'd eventually have something good, but Cage sticks to the same crappy experience. The guy is definitely in a world of his own.

Don’t think news like this should surprise gamers as after all money is very persuasive.

I’m sure the first thing Cage and the team will do is port over various titles that have already been completed (Detroit/Beyond/Heavy rain, etc…) to other systems.

One of the things that made Quantic Dreams stand out (especially over the last 10 years.) was its unique position as being an exclusive studio for Sony. That right there I believe helped set them apart from the slew of other 3rd party multiplatform titles out there.

Hopefully making the decision to go multiplatform actually helps the company expand rather than makes them get lost in the shuffle.

Quantic Dream games are niche to mildly popular similar to many Telltale Games titles. And like Telltale, I fear that expanding too fast and being too ambitious beyond the studio's manpower and capabilities may be its undoing. Don't expand to fast. Be selective with the titles you make. Pay your workers. If Minecraft approaches you to make a David Cage Minecraft game, just say no. Don't let NetEase bully you. Other than that, I look forward to many more Quantic Dream games to come.

@restatbonfire: They won't be able to port their existing PS3/PS4 titles for legal reasons, unless either there was some time limit on the exclusivity agreement, or they bought Sony out of the agreement.

I applaud their move to multiplatform, even if I'm not a fan of what they've made thus far. (Need more gameplay in their games for my taste... Had the same problem with D4.)

@lonesamurai00: They're not really my cup of tea either, in fact I couldn't even tell you what genre I'd put them in. I wouldn't say they suck though, they're pretty well reviewed

@aross2004: It's one of those games that you either liked or loathed. Those QTEs make the games feel boring to play.

@aross2004: And why prey tell would I do that? First off I would never buy a game with that kind of gameplay. What's funny is that I have a neighbor who worships Sony's consoles and he is always asking me over to play some new game. Unfortunately that Detroit game bored me to tears and if their future PC titles are based on this kind of gameplay forget that.
