With The Super Mario Bros. Movie's release bringing the plumbers and his pals into the spotlight, YouTube has joined the conversation with some startling figures: Super-Mario-related videos have been viewed over 100 billion times on the service, with a new video uploaded every 20 seconds.

A new blog post from YouTube shared the Super Mario milestones, saying that Mario videos have "been a part of YouTube’s DNA since the beginning." Speedruns of Mario games are uploaded more than any other franchise, according to the blog, while over 2 million channels have uploaded videos related to the series.

YouTube also released a trends report corresponding with the blog post, which offers more insight into what its research found. 2022 saw more Mario videos uploaded that any other year, while the US and Japan, according to the report, account for 40% of all Mario video viewership around the world. The report also reveals the top 10 Mario games by overall viewership, which is as follows:

  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • Super Mario Maker
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Super Mario 64
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Super Mario Maker
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Super Mario Party

A new Mario game may soon enter this list, or not, as series creator Shigeru Miyamoto recently told Variety Magazine to "please stay tuned for future Nintendo Directs" when asked about the next Mario video game adventure. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has also stirred up some controversy upon release, with the original composer of the DK Rap being left out of the movie's credits.
