Active duty military and veterans can grab dozens of Steam games for free right now through OSD's Games to Grunts program, an initiative centered around providing military members with digital games free of charge. The current crop of games includes SoulCalibur VI and Tekken 7, the most recent entries in the pair of long-running fighting game franchises.

To secure codes for the free games, you'll need to register for a Games to Grunts account using your military ID. Note that some games are already selling out, so don't wait too long to claim your freebies.

See all free games at Games to Grunts

In GameSpot's Tekken 7 review, the game earned an 8/10, with reviewer Peter Brown praising its deep fighting mechanics, well-balanced tone, and memorable moments that callback to the series' rich history. Likewise, our SoulCalibur VI review scored that game an 8/10--critic Tamoor Hussain noted its excellent single-player campaign and intuitive mechanics.

Along with Tekken 7 and SoulCalibur VI, active duty military and veterans have a score of indie games to choose from. Here are a handful of standouts from indie developers and publishers like TinyBuild and Meridian4:

It's worth keeping an eye on Games to Grunts if you're a veteran or currently serving in the military. Earlier this year, Games to Grunts offered a free two-year subscription to Xbox Game Pass and a free 12-month subscription to Xbox Live Gold.

What a great program. While I don't always like the approach of our military, the people that make up the rank and file absolutely deserve support. I would imagine when you're stationed abroad on a military base, having a bunch of great games to play would make a huge difference in being able to unwind and relax a little bit.

I am a veteran of the USAF and I love that people offer things like this. It's not offered through the military at it's people taking time out of their day to run the website, contact publishers, and letting us forget a bit with the joy of video games. There is also another website called Vet Tix but does the same thing with live shows, sporting events, etc: https://www.vettix.org/ref/1821519

@Robamcclellan: I am a veteran of the US Army myself. I also love that people offer things like this (as well as many of the local places, such as free meals at Golden Corral on/around Veterans Day). I am checking out that Vet Tix site as well. As for this Games to Grunts, a lot of the good stuff is sold out, but still found some pretty good stuff, such as Star Traders : Frontiers.

So that's what the US military is concerned about, huh? That their troops have enough videogames to play.

Oh, now I get it. It's part of their marketing to try and get more guys into the military. Since the US forces seem to have huge problems recruiting enough soldiers to further expand their army, and since pretty much everyone is overweight now and unfit for duty. Great idea, luring the kids in with free games. They should offer free subscriptions to porn sites as well.

@Atzenkiller: I don't think OSD is a part of the military proper. It's a veteran support group. So I don't think your comment really applies. Plus, even if it were part of the military, addressing smaller scale quality-of-life issues for soldiers is still valuable, even if there are bigger systemic problems at play. Not fixing small problems because bigger ones exist is foolish; supporting veterans and soldiers with programs like this is not mutually exclusive to fixing bigger systemic problems, in other words.

@howlingfantod: I consider this as much "support" as providing people with junk food. If they wanna eat it, let them pay for it themselves. But handing it out for free, same as with videogames? I don't see how that could help anyone. Videogames are not exactly a necessity in life. They're a way to waste time and we all know it.

@Atzenkiller: Seriously? You think video games are a waste of time? Entertainment 'junk food,' huh? I could not disagree more. While not all games straddle the art/entertainment line as much as others- i.e. some games have more artistic/intellectual/creative value than others- deciding that games don't have value because you say so is really narrow-minded and frankly, pretty ignorant. I mean, books and movies 'aren't exactly a necessity' either, so maybe you should make sure no one is giving out free blu-rays or books to veterans either, god forbid.

@howlingfantod: Good idea. Maybe they should hand out educational books to those veterans and soldiers so they could spend their time more productively. I certainly couldn't say anything bad about that. But we all know where those books would end up.

Further encouraging people to spend their time on meaningless entertainment is not what the government, military or any other organization should be doing. You can already play all the games you want for little money, or even for free. Nobody needs some organization to give them free games.

@Atzenkiller: Out of curiosity, what the hell are you doing on this website (focused on the 'meaningless entertainment' of video game & gamer culture) if you hate video games so much?

@howlingfantod: Do you always make so many assumptions? You don't have to be delusional and tell yourself that you're improving the world to be able to play videogames. But boy, if you're telling yourself that they're not just a waste of time, like pretty much any other form of entertainment, then you are very delusional and should try to fix that as it can lead to all kinds of mental issues. It's okay to enjoy any forms of entertainment from time to time. But if you act like your life revolves around it, then that just shows that something is seriously lacking in your life. And if you had other things going on you also wouldn't feel offended if someone called your favorite pastime a waste of time. You could enjoy fishing instead, which is also a waste of time if you look at it objectively since you can just as well go into a store and buy from fish. But if you enjoy doing it from time to time, then why would you care what anyone else thinks about it? If you have to convince yourself that it's the best way to spend your time though, then you've got issues you're trying to ignore through these pastimes.

@Atzenkiller: So 'mostly all entertainment' is a waste of time? You're clearly just dumb. There is a middle ground between 'valuable because it's improving the world and the people in it' and 'utter waste of time.' I enjoy video games; even when they aren't narrative- or character-driven, as long as they're designed well and fun, they provide stress relief and entertainment and therefore have value and worth. Some games- The Last of Us comes to mind- manage to both entertain and provide insight into the human condition on par with great films and therefore have value. People don't go fishing because they want to eat a fish- they do it because the activity has value to them. It isn't a waste of time simply because there are more efficient ways to get fish. If you don't understand that, then I honestly shouldn't even bother with this response; no matter how well-crafted or articulate my explanation, someone who thinks fishing is a waste of time 'since you can just as well go into a store and buy from fish' will never understand. So, nevermind, I suppose. You're right, mostly all entertainment is a waste of time. People who enjoy video games are delusional and think they're improving the world by playing them. Kudos on your insight.

@Atzenkiller: they should be concerned about giving them better housing. One of the sons of a colonel got lead poisoning from badly mantained old painting in a designated home, and now the poor kid health is in the line.

@Atzenkiller: No, the U.S. military is not concerned about having “enough video games to play” for military service members. This is an initiative that a veteran support organization is doing on their own as a thank you to people serving now and those who already served. The military didn’t ask them to do this. Don’t confuse the two.

Also, saying that this is a marketing move to recruit more people into the military is so asinine it’s almost impressive. If that were the case, they would have made it so that people signing up to join the military would get this benefit, and not people already serving or those who are veterans and already left.

@elementalweapon: Are you aware that the US military has funded a few games by now over the years? They are very much using videogames as a recruitment tool. Whatever helps them get new recruits is fine to them. And especially now that capable recruits seem to have become extremely hard to get in the US.
