Fun gameplay mechanics, excruciating progression

User Rating: 7 | Watch Dogs PC

I did enjoy the game more than I expected, especially at the beginning. The game is filled with a lot of fun gameplay mechanics. And even though everything regarding hacking was as unrealistic and unengaging as it gets, the additional mechanics that it brought on was still a blast to work with. The police chases in this game was the most fun compared to the other games because of the "hack" mechanics. I played the game without any issues (probably because I played on a high-end system), and with the worse mod the game looked absolutely gorgeous, although I wouldn't fully credit Ubisoft for that. I enjoyed the early missions (up to middle of Act 3) quite a lot since I was doing a pacifist run which made the campaign missions significantly more interesting and challenging. I'll get back to what happened after. If I were to rate just the gameplay, it would be an 8 or 9/10 game, but there's more to it unfortunately.

Aiden Pearce was by far the worst-written protagonist I have seen in any game. Everything from his attitude, his actions was cringe-worthy and showcased a complete loser. Besides the inconsistencies (e.g. if you are a smart hacker, you cannot be as dumb as Pearce), the story itself was just really poor. They had a virtual "Criminal <-> Vigilante" progression scale that has no meaning and is completely useless, as **SPOILER** I found out later in the game, that it was impossible to complete the game without killing anyone, because there were missions literally designed for you to massacre people. The first mission of such kind was when you try to get Raymond to escape the fixers. I tried a bunch of times to clear the mission without killing anyone (by neutralizing the targets), but Raymond would keep dying because of the huge number of enforcers you are up against. The only choice you have, the only choice that the game gives you is to blow up the traps in Ray's lair and kill off all the fixers. And as the game progresses, most of the missions need you to do that. Now don't get me wrong, the gameplay mechanics around the shooting isn't terrible in any sense of the word, but the game pretends to have a sense of choice for the player with no grounding. And surprise surprise, at the end you find out that that was the character writing after all! Aiden Pearce loses sight of his character in a vengeful run and plows everyone getting in his way. I did get a sense of this earlier when Jackson gets kidnapped. I neutralized everyone without killing, and the cinematic shows as if Jackson saw Pearce killing everyone in the CC TV, like seriously? And the fun gameplay does get very repetitive, and with no good story to hold down the fort, the game gets very uninteresting and unenjoyable about halfway through, after which it felt like a chore to finish the game to see a cliche ending. Hope these issues are fixed in the sequel.

TL;DR Fun gameplay, that gets boring because of terrible story and character writing as its foundation.
