The best vehicular combat, on any platform, to date.

User Rating: 9.7 | Vigilante 8 N64
In 1999 Nintendo 64 owners got something no other has out done since, the most complete and intense auto combat game ever made. Vigilante 8 has a simple premise, choose your vehicle, and blast the junk out of everyone else. However, the folks at Activision went even further than that and added quite a bit of depth to the game play. For example, included with the slew of weapons are special button combos that increase the power of the attack at the cost of more ammo. At first the combinations seem difficult to pull off while maneuvering, but after a few tries they become second nature and really add to the excitement. The rest of the controlls are well placed and intuitive and the N64 controller lends itself well to this game. The graphics are top-notch with respect to detail and clarity. The weapon and damage effects and animation are excellent as well. To make it even better the developers included a special code (MAXRESOLUTION) that unlocked a higher level of resolution called Ultra. Back in a day it was like turning your N64 into a Dreamcast; the graphics were so detailed, crisp and clear. Ultra res is the only way I play it today and it still looks good.
The only element that detracts from the rest of the game is the story. The Quest mode was a weak attempt at extra depth that pretty much fell on its face. Still it doesn't ruin the game, it's merely laughable and easily over looked given the high quality of game play.
