GameSpot's Battlefield expert Aaron Sampson gives us his impressions on the game's beta as we ask if Hardline is more than a glorified expansion pack?

Everyone wondering about the game being 60$ and if it is worth it go to G2a where it is about 35$ if you are a picky buyer and want the cheapest dont buy the games from origin themself where it is very overpriced (unless you wish to support them).
My first impression of the Beta: NO TANKS!???? Just armored vehicles with no stopping power whatsoever... jesus christ what a mess EA have scrapped together.. BFBC2 still the best game.
@Pr3DaToR92 BC2 will never be topped :) necro or not. =)
i thought the beta was fun, but i think blood money and heist will get old fast. so if they are questioning making conquest, not sure how long the other modes will last. so based off that and what i played, no i dont think its worth $60.
it's a great game, doesn't look as good as BF4, it's definitely fun but it won't be worth $60. $70 for deluxe... i think it's worth about $35 though.
Why is this question never asked about other games? There are so many games we could question the value of besides the obvious such as every game that has annual releases. For example is a game took one year to develop of lesser value than one that took three? How about a game that cost one million to make versus fifty million. I remember when this came up for left for dead 2 and that proved more than an expansion. Worse is making this salacious headline based off the beta. I am not a fan of EA myself but this seems like fox news style of opinion reporting.
Why are people treating this like it's the full blown retail release? Why is it so hard for people to wrap their heads around the idea of a beta? It's a programming snippet used to gauge netcode, server and coding issues which they will then use to improve the final product. Naturally it feels akin to BF4 because it's using the same engine, but the gameplay differs substantially so far and will probably be even more evident upon release.
@Zombrex A beta, is very close to a release with AAA games. I think you might be mixing up Alpha and Beta. This is THE game. A snippet; yes. But most of the changes from here until release will be tweaks. There simply isn't enough bandwidth on a team to do much more in a few months.
And the engine has little to do with it. Entire portions of maps and objects are simply lifted from BF4. It's a reskin...there are countless examples of this being the case. So our heads are sufficiently wrapped- I assure you.
But to your point, we have no reason to think, based on previous betas, that the launch will be much different. Just look at the BF4 Beta as evidence alone.
Drysprocket - a beta is still a very limited view of the game and is mainly focused on feedback and gathering statistics. There are usually many maps and modes not included and usually do not include shingler player. It is really strange for the value of any game to be questioned before release but especially strange to question it off a beta. I guess people are still butt sore from the problems with bf 4 and they have a right to be m it might be nice if EA would offer a discover to premium members and somehow those who bought bf4 early.
I'll wonder if they will offer Premium for Hardline also. $60 for a game that many don't feel it's worth plus $50 for more DLC.
BF Hardline is really fun but it will only be worth $60 to me if it has an excellent campaign and 50% more multiplayer content than BF4 from the get go. Otherwise, it really is just a mod and worth $30. $40 tops.
@Rushaoz 50% more multiplayer content... Do you actually expect each successive installment of a franchise to offer up 50% more than its predecessor before you'd consider it worth full price? Much as I enjoy both Battlefield 3 and 4 they are in a lot of ways the same game. Doesn't mean that I don't feel like I got my money's worth out of both even at full price.
So CoD does this every year and no one bats an eyelash... Battlefield gets in on annual release and suddenly it's being called an expansion pack... hypocrisy people.
@endorbr I agree with you, however I would say that CoD releases seem to be more complete, feature-filled (zombies, extinction, spec-ops, etc.) games and have overall better quality assurance than what BF has been releasing. I don't think they would get as much crap if their last game wasn't such a disaster. We have yet to see Activision release a really buggy and broken game. I'm not saying one is better, that's just preference and opinion.
I played the beta from day 1 when it was announced at E3 and while it is fun it has lots of problems, matches don't last long enough, maps are too small for so many players, at least the one map we got to see, you can do anything without it turning into a pile of dead bodies as massive amounts of players go to the same spots every round, the helicopter is almost useless as it either gets shot down right away or crashes into nearby buildings, I won't be buying Hardline, I have high hopes for R6 Siege though.
I am confused, where are the tanks, where are the jets .. how can you have a battlefield without such basic things .....this is just CoD with police cars, pointless.
*left scratching my head*
@borrisimo Yeah, I don't know how they had battles before tanks and jets.
@borrisimo yeah I didn't quite get that. This feels like a step backwards for the franchise.
That was sarcasm man. Battles have happened for centuries without tanks. If they made a Battlefield: Revolutionary War it wouldn't have tanks. If it's not in the context of the game then it would be assinign to have tanks in the game.
@Zombrex I'm talking about Battlefield franchise video games. Obviously throughout human history there have been tank-less battles.
I love Battlefield, played every game in the series apart from Bad Company 1. I will not be buying Battlfield Hardline at launch though
Only problem is you don't buy it at launch there will be a new one out by the time you get it, and the servers will be half emptied and the few people playing it will be on different modes and DLCs. That's what BF has become, maybe Infinity Ward/ Treyarch can start making BF now that DICE/VISCERAL is making anual COD.
They shoudnt of released a beta because it made people see what the game was. Its BF4 with a new skin and medals. It could and should of been DLC as its no change apart from the skins looking different. Plus its just a milking test game for BF5.
@scraper2k haha the developer just can't win, can they? People bitch about devs that release betas too late, too early, not having a beta, and then there's you. Saying they shouldn't have released a beta at all. Do you feel that the developer should've tricked people into buying the game? How can you possibly complain about a beta release?
Release a beta for a good full game, not a half skin job and charge full price. I played there beta, had to look twice because I thought I was playing bf4...
They always sold themselves as the fan friendly alternative to cod.
Didn't charge for loads of maps
Didn't release the same game with tweaks every 6 months
@scraper2k Can I borrow your time machine? I want to see what the finished product looks like too.
This is another game that does not force people to work together. The only time you will probably actually work together is when people you know in your squad like friends or some gaming group you are part of. The game is really stupid when it does not give you freedom to move around the whole map and then kills you for thinking you are leaving the battlefield. I might actually be interested in buying the game as long as you can actually rob banks inside buildings. I would hope they would add that when the game is finished. I am happy though that you can shoot windows.
@Cashmoney007 That was one of the things that bothered me most was when a teammate would drive or fly off the battleground and you all die.
Ok...honestly...now we are asking this question? About a billion CODs later ...God knows those games don't change at all...but now we want something drastically different.....
@Winchester01 COD:Greed. Assassins Creed Greed, NHL greed, they're all the same man. Don't give battlefield a hard time
Pulling punches a bit guys...just call it what it is. Polygon did it right; this is a must-read article for everyone:"I won't buy Battlefield Hardline at launch, and neither should you"
no its probably not ! Hell I even regret cashing out 50 Euro for Titanfall and Battlefield 4 on the PC. Seriously BF4 alone put me off from pre-ordering anything.
Pretty good commentary. It is clear they all thought this was an overpriced mod. But they seemed afraid to admit it.
Still was worth watching.
BF franchise is know to go half off on black Friday. BF3 did it and BF4. So just wait 1 month and you can get it at half price if you want too.
I'm still waiting for Battlefield 4 to be worth $60...let alone the $110 I paid for it. Oh well, at least I have a couple more uninspired DLC cobbled together from the bits and scraps leftover that didn't make the original release to look forward to.
Definitely....not buying it for X360. It seems like anything coming from top studios since the "next-gen consoles" were released seem to be sub-par and are going backwards in terms of visual fidelity and quality. I have been thinking of getting a PS4 but we'll see.
I enjoyed the concept.... But found the beta to be a little unbalanced... When your are in a bad team(or new players), you have NO WAY to win... The other team will just crush your's... And there's no auto balance beteween matches... So when you enter a game, you are either doomed or winner...
....i'd say they will fix up auto balancing & squad changing b4 release..... The like to you is purely because you have a dream theatre logo.... The greatest prog metal band on earth!!!
@Bjjallday A battlefield game fixing stuff before release? Doubt it.
