Thief - Now Playing
Kevin VanOrd is joined by Stephane Roy from Eidos to give us an early look at Thief.
Do NOT play first person games with a keyboard and mouse (unless you play for competion and need speed)..
the movements are often just not as round and smooth when straving, turing, aiming, moving... to trully enjoy the grafix and envirment
(and game like Skyrim or Dishonred are ruined like that)
at least the guy here is really trying to move (strave...) smooth as possible (at times..), cause it's more for "demo" reason..
but when you see players really playing such 1-person games with a keyboard and mouse it's often too jerky and fast
(like TotalBiscuit.., watching him gave me a headache..)
you can turn off the focus stuff and on PC it looks like it runs awesome with negligant loading times, that you barely notice if you have the hardware. This game looks better than the review says it is., theres many people on the planet that are enjoying it.
Also on the higher difficultys the Ai does spot you.
this shows that 1080p vs 720p is not very important. xbox one holds a much better fps in thief. where as ps4 version drops to nearly single digests from 30 fps during times of intense action. when a game hits 15 fps n lower its unbearable to play. i would sooner have a more stable game at 720p than 1 that is unbearable at 1080p... where is this 'room to spare' on ps4 when bf4 is most impressive game on ps4 visually and its only 900p... it just proves the 1080p debate is over blown.
This looks worse than I expected, the AI is laughably dumb, everything feels so placed and unnatural, the visuals are terrible to say the least and the level design looks horrendous, I wonder if this team has even played the original Thief games?
i like how they always act so nice about the game when they sit next to its designer.. than when they review it they blatantly say how shit it is
I'm not a big fan of first-person open world games for the exception of Borderlands and Skyim. Plus, I think this would get boring pretty fast. I'll wait for the South Park game next week.
So someone clarify this for me: As far as I can guess from listening, Thief in an open-world game of sorts? Since he did mention side-quests and a city...
Hopefully it will be a larger game and not like...I don't know.. Being a little closed off. What I remember from Deadly Shadows is that the game was indeed open, but honestly I felt that the world was a little...Small in some respect
'Water arrows' always bugged me - was hoping they'd change them to something more physically probable. Looks promising though; Ord asked some great questions, just a shame they weren't all directly answered!
Friend of mine had a leaked copy for 360.....canceled my preorder.
I think i will just simply rebuy the old ones on steam.
@ninboxstation Like any tool it is only as good as the person using it. Nothing wrong or restrictive with using keyboard and mouse for 1st person games. Strafing is done with ease and smoothness as is many other movements. Just a matter of setting up the binds and mouse speed to an individual's taste.
Like most things, practise makes perfect.
both have framerate troubles..., and the framerate of the X1 is very, very seldomly better (so seldom, that almost no reviewer noticed it...;)
so play the whole game with only 900p and a very, very few times a better framerate? or play the whole game in 1080p with a very, very few times a worse framerate?
=> at least you can play 1080p on the PS4, and if you want overall less framerate problems, you'd have to go on both conosle at 720p
(but I don't see the X1 being smoother thant than the PS4 at 720p)
by the way, the -day 1 patch-, just might very well fix that framerate thing.. (but not fix 1080p for the X1 ;)
just proves, that 1 out of 10 games can't handle 1080 perfectly on the PS4, because of the release date stress.. (there will be a day 1 patch, to fix a few things..)
and just proves, that 10 out 10 games on the X1 can't play 1080p..
@pyosisified You should check out the total Bicsuit review then and watch the PC version. it looks and plays way better. It actually looks good when hes playing it and very similar to thief 3.
@dannydopamine28 Would you rather them be assholes? It's their job to give their detailed opinions on games, not tear into peoples self esteem.
@dark_rising76 Skyrim was pretty good in third-person compared with Oblivion. However perhaps with the developers success with Deus Ex it was best it remaining a First person viewed game.
Also likely a calling back towards the series roots?
Have fun with South Park next week, I'm on the fence about that one personally haha.
well if you prefer southpark to thief, then you shouldn't even post in thief topics
@angeloti83 From my understanding it works in the same layout Deus Ex (last gen) did.
An option to kill, or one for that dizzy knock-out.
With that said stealth games reward the latter over killing. . Normally.
@margevich Human Revolution was a game I really enjoyed, so by your logic I would like Thief also haha.
If you find it a "fail" personally, your call. You enjoy your games and we'll enjoy ours.
@margevich How exactly is HR a fail? Or a game you haven't played yet for that matter.
@kalgert It's likely to be very similar to Thief 3 in that respect. It will hopefully be a fair bit bigger (especially the main city hub), but I wouldn't expect a whole lot of difference in regards to being open-world.
@Thathanka Stealth games are not for you.
@Dark_Rage VanOrd is great I do like Danny alot too they are probably the only reasons I come to this site honestly.
@Dark_Rage Game developer may feel their ass getting on fire.
The last of a great breed of reviewers.
@josnas What would being on a console or a PC have anything to do with the difficulty for a game like this?
on one side, TotalBiscuit did show the game in a better light and showed off some of it's strenghts (I'm just playing Thief right now on the PS4..and I agree a lot with TotalBiscuit onthief. ..also the diffrent seetings are cool.)
BUT watching TotalBiscuit play with a keyboard/Mouse was painfull (jerky and un-smooth movments and turnining.. , no real straving...if he played Skyrim like that, he ruined the half the Skyrim experience..)
Oh no, I love stealth games. Played the original Tenchu to death when it came out, and Splinter Cell, etc. This just looks like stealth-lite to me. Easy yet restrictive = boring.
Not true Angry Birds on PC is more hardcore and difficult
Megaman on the NES makes me angry
I played Morrowind on Xbox and Oblivion on Xbox 360
@Jacknoll Playing with a controller has nothing to do with it. I play some PC games with my XBOX controller. Have you played the older Elder scrolls games?
@Jacknoll This. It has nothing to do with consoles. I play on everything and PC games have never seemed more advanced in that aspect. All older games were more difficult, regardless of platform. Blame casual gamers and/or developers, not consoles which have both types of games, just like PCs.
@billlabowski @josnas :P I'm a PC gamer, so I appreciate the range and speed the mouse affords. But still, I played most of Skyrim on an Xbox controller and it didn't feel too different.
