@Darkhearted91 Honestly, when I first heard about AC4, I thought that's what they had done. Sure, the pirate-theme seemed trite, but after the "surprise ending" of AC3, it made sense to sideline the Greek God/Animus/Desmond plot for a bit while Ubisoft decided what to do next. Since they still needed to publish a game every year or so, why not just make one for giggles where the player was a pirate? It could still give some insight into the whole Templar/Assassin line without focusing on Desmond. ...at least, that's what I'd thought.

@TrueNone13 @Darkhearted91 I just cant bear the "Animus" situations anymore....they killed off Desmond and so many answers are going unanswered with Desmond; just make it simple put us in the moment and build from there.

@marceldelta @Darkhearted91 Actually its based on the war between templars and assassins ubisoft uses the animus to to help the modern day character to "experience" the past events; please dont be an ass when you dont know what youre talking about.

@TrueNone13 @Darkhearted91 Are you serious?? You're explaining the plot to me? Me, who has finished all AC games and one portable (Bloodlines)? Me, who has read the comics? I'm not a fanboy, just like the franchise, not my favorite franchise, but I think EVERYONE is nitpicking here. This is a great franchise, period. AC3 was kind of weaker, but a colossal great game. AC4 will probably be better. Now enough you guys! Stop trying to have something to say. AC is being criticized because our expectations are always too high for this franchise, which is a testament of its quality.

Now, excuse me, I was playing Metro Last Light with my girlfriend, my favorite franchise and THIS ONE nobody disagrees is a masterpiece. No offenses buddies, I just think everyone is acting like nitpicking trolls. Later.

@heartindarkness Best? Then, I'm assuming you played the others also, yeah? What made AC3 best? I actually liked Connor a good bit, but I couldn't bother myself with finishing AC3. I can't pinpoint why I disliked it, though. So what made you like it?

At the end there, I think Danny hit the biggest problem plaguing the entire industry. The franchise milking is what's killing Assassins Creed within the span of a single console generation.

the AC series could of been a break out that stood shoulder to shoulder with Grand Theft Auto and Half-Life as a series that stood the test of time. Instead Ubisoft decided to exploit it for short-term gain, turning what was once one of my favorite new IP's into a joke.

Also, they have already made it abundantly clear they intend to do the same thing with Watch Dogs.

@keech for sure...this is basically assassins creed 6 and the first assassins creed came out 3 years after half life2 ...still waiting for half life 3. black flag still looks fun...but I was prepared to wait longer for it. took me off guard when i heard AC4 was coming out so soon.

I disagree a little bit with Danny over the immersive worlds of the original games. All of them had rather obvious game elements, so it was an issue from the very start, it just got more obvious. I liked the first one a lot, but it did get repetitive with its objectives and mechanics, reminding me I was playing a game all along. The second one was a leaps and bounds improvement with that. I then skipped the next ones, except for AC III because I already felt they were milking it... I liked AC III (specially the naval assignments), though the story was disappointing. They really focused too much on the weak Desmond parts as well. I'm not looking forward to Black Flag, Watch Dogs looks much more promising.

@neptunedon I think Danny's point is that it got worse over time, not necessarily that it was perfect initially. I still remember the first's obtrusive cues to dive off a ledge or clamber up a wall. Eventually, they stopped reminding me I was in a game, though, and AC2 made this transition more quickly. Granted, I didn't get especially far into AC3, but even while sprinting around town, I couldn't escape cues.

I always felt Ubisoft was just making up things as they went along. None of the AC games ended with you feeling completely satisfied. There was no real meaningful underlying story, despite Ubisoft wanting to fool you into believing so. They had no idea where the animus thing was going or where to take it. Or how to tie up all the loose ends from the different games. I'm guessing the developers were big fans of the television show Lost . . .

@Qixote Sounds like discussions I've had with fellow gamers. The story to the first seemed vague enough to allow for the premise and, should the game be successful, allow for an actual story later. Maybe they knew what they were doing by AC2, but the overall story--the whole Athena business--lacked the intrigue and subtlelty of the in-game stories--both Ezio's personal struggles and the larger battle between Templars and Assassins. As the series progress, ignoring the contrast became impossible.

Some good points. I don't know anyone who enjoyed the Desmond sections in any game. Though I personally enjoyed AC III overall, I don't think I ever looked forward to micromanaging every single item in my trade caravans, collecting random things to craft the better weapons, or having to play one specific way every time to get 100% sync.

I think the decline in quality we've seen with the series can be attributed to its initial success. Once games garner that much attention (and profit) more and more people (especially corporate tools) feel the need to put their hands on development thinking they'll be the one to give this already successful thing what it really needs to be great (read: an even more profitable venture for the company) until we're left with what Danny described very well, a product coming off an assembly line offering only safe choices that cater to as many potential consumers as possible. A great example of this principle in practice can be found in Mass Effect, which started as a great story driven RPG, and turned into a mediocre third person shooter with a few RPG elements by the time it reached its horrid ending.

One incredible mistake in the gameplay were the displays of the "do those 3 things exactly while you're living the story and you will get 100% in this mission". Terrible design choice. It sucks you right out of the story and makes you think in mechanics and railed activities. And when you "fail" by, for example, choosing to kill your target in other way different that the one displayed, thar red line, that "X", "you failed!". Coitus Gameplay Interruptus from the start.

@reindertot I agree completely. I have a hard time pinpointing any reason why I didn't enjoy AC3 as much as previous games, I just know that I didn't really love it. Reading your comment made me realize an inherent problem that many games seem to be utilizing now - a gameplay score.

I absolutely hate this. I would like to play it how I want to play it without having the game penalize me for it in some way. I love Splinter Cell: Blacklist...a lot. But I hate that I feel obligated to play in one play style for a mission if I want to get any kind of real progress or money.

This was my biggest problem with Hitman: Absolution as well that I stated outright. I loved the Hitman games. I think they're creative, interesting variations on the stealth genre. But as soon as Absolution introduced a score bar right in my face, I hated it. I hate watching my score go up and down as I do things right and wrong in the game. It's horrible. It makes me feel bad that I'm doing things "incorrectly" by the game's scoring standards.

I went on a rant, but you're comment triggered a small realization of my problem with some games recently in series that I have loved for a long time.

Maybe they were too much focused on introducing new things in every other title that they forgot to keep that "organic feel" in place for the gamers. I also didn't like how they ended desmond's story, they could have done much better!! But even so ezio and altair were phenomenal and the mechanics of the game are still pretty awesome so maybe just for the sake of roaming around the open world, assassinating the targets in more unique ways and getting another shot at learning history, i am going to spend my buck on it!

When Ubisoft started to underestimate their awesome reinvention of history (in the forms of, for example, eliminating the glitchs/the truth after Assassin's Creed 2) and starting to focus more on "what would be more entertaining and fast", they started to lose the suspense and the mood around the saga. AC2 was interesting, clever, deep and frightening at times. AC3 was just fun sometimes.

The other thing is that silly "objectivism" that the saga has been developing since "Revelations". We got Assassin's and Templars, each faction with a certain view of power and development of human race. Yes, the majority sided by the assassin's because of their politics and struggle. But no, now we have some weird blurry "middle ground" where templars are "not that bad" and assassins "maybe were wrong". And is just a political statement of the creators, not a character-driven consequence. Maybe Abstergo bought Ubisoft? :-)

Weren't they developing that element of objectivism since the first game then they dropped it and simply made the factions for two games black and white. Assassins = Good Guys, Templars = Big Bad Guys. Yeah I wasn’t really all for that Saturday morning cartoon approach.

@Deadly_Nemesis The current objectivism is just forced. The first games were really subjective, yet, you can view some templars (even tho they were clearly the villains) points.

I think the most disappointing thing in AC is that the assassins are too damn strong for an assassin. Assassin is supposed to be stealthy, whereas there isn't any need for stealth since AC2. Damn it man I can even kill a whole army with swords and etc in a country with just one damn hidden blade. As for the story, well just like what people say, it has been gradually weaker since AC2 (which has the greatest story).

I have to be honest and say that if AC3 stuck with Haytham as the main character it would have held my interest a little more , just can't seem to see Connor as a decent main character. But as it has been said before the first one was in many ways the best , maybe because it was completely original maybe because towards the end it got ridiculously hard in places (although the final fight was a bit of a letdown imo).

AC2 was a great game aswell with decent setting and believable main character, I haven't played Revelations or Brotherhood yet and tbh I may give Revelations a miss due to a lot of negative comments from players who have played all the AC series.

Another good Vid Danny, as always keep up the great work.

I liked the first one, loved the second game, and there's no word for how great I think Brotherhood was, but with Revelations the series really began to decline in quality, imo. Revelations was decent, but man, I almost have no positive words to utter about Assassin's Creed 3 - I did like Haytham as a character though but that is about it...

I am so psyched about this game.the world has improved so much and the ocean and islands are beautiful as well.the characters are amazing, they have awesome personalities and the voice acting is great.i like that ubisoft has put so much emphasis on the naval open world.the thing that i like the most is that they have made the main character a brash cruel pirate assassin and not the old assassins like Altair, ezio and Conner who were never in for themselves.but I'm so glad that Desmond is gone because he was a lame main character.

I played 1, 2, brotherhood, revelations and bit of 3. I gotta say the series started to bore me somwhere in the middle of 2. There was just too much stuff. Too much weaponary on someone who is called an assassin. I loved how they did it in the first part weaponwise and it was hard. When you want to use hidden blade in a fight you could instantly kill an enemy, but also you had to be quick and precise, because you couldn't block. In 2 they just turned your character from Kasanova into super killing machine in a day (yes, you get "trained" by Mario but by the time I got to training part I already killed hordes of soldiers using every tecnhique avaliable. In 1 we know that Altair was trained since he was a child to became what he came to be, but Ezio just puts the hood on and can just kill everybody even better than Altair. Also, story become very tiring with all those historical characters just thrown at you at the end of 2 and almost every one of them is an assassin.
3 finally made me decide to quit the series. Firstly, it was too demanding for my pc (but if a game's good, that shouldn't stop you, would it? you wait for a while and improve your pc, just like I did for witcher 2). Secondly, the story became very very boring (with all the assassins which are good guys and templars which are bad guys). 1 had very nice conspiracy concept and you knew which are your goals: kill couple of main dudes (because that's what assassins do) and in the end you get interesting ending with mysterious apple. And also assassin codex (like never use poison) was a very cool thing. In 2 they just said "**** the codex, kill howerver you like!".The gameplay also became horrible. You used to be an assassin, sneaking upon enemies, avoiding direct fight whenever possible, but now the game throws you from the very begining fighting a battle with bunch of soldiers side by side with some npcs. And even when you do fight alone, you're just too powerful, the fights are too easy, they don't have a feeling of deserved victrory.
All in all the series became just what Danny said in the article: a mass product, a golden goose. And everybody heard of that golden goose and came to take an egg (not "an" egg, but as much as they can carry) from it. They placed it on pedastel and demanding with their eager eyes "make more! make more!". But the goose is tired and should just be put down.

ps sorry for the long comment

And also difficulty has dropped to shit in these games now, the chases in AC1 towards end were the best, I ran like shit cause I will die if I don't (in game) and AI got more aggressive towards the end, and if you are outnumbered more than 4 or 5 towards the end you get your ass kicked.(unless you run around in circles waiting for the health to regenerate).

And more than 2 Archers will kick your ass.

Assassins creed 1 was the best, it had varied locations, not too many obvious climbing locations, the story of Altair was subtle, the confessions after each assassinations made Altair(and me as the player) question who was right, and managed to keep me till the end. i didn't like the fact that mechanics were locked almost till the end, but i did like it when I got new weapons after missions rather than buying stuff. AC 2 was good but while the world was detailed it lacked a little of the wonders of the original, like when you first saw Jerusalem, and its very aggressive beggars. And about black flag, I think besides the Naval battles I bet Risen 2 is a better Pirate simulator.

And the side plot about Desomond, wow wasn't that a terrible shit.

@sebbysebbseb @marinevetstl

kinda agree with marinevetstl, because in GTA the developers can start from zero every game, AC developers don't have such freedom, since every main title has to be tied to Desmond's storyline.

About Danny's video, I still think is a bit to early to say those things abous AC Black Flag
