The Gist - 5 Games Harder Than Dark Souls
The Souls series is notoriously challenging but Jess thinks she can rustle up five games that are even more difficult. Did your pick make the list?
I used to love playing Metroid but it got so challenging and annoying at the end. You would try to blast mother brain with missiles while fiery rings would knock you off into the lava draining your health. Even when you destroyed her there was no rest. Hurry up and get off the planet! A self destruct sequence has activated!
Wow, thanks for including battletoads. A game I still play on my emulator but will most likely never defeat. The only person Ive ever seen get to the last stage was my papa (RIP) via a videogame magazine, you know, in the 90's when the internet was awful and printed pages were still relevant. Good list Jess.
I've seen YouTube playthroughs of perfect Contra playthroughs, so I'm not calling anyone a liar, but the main reason why it was so hard was because it was originally an arcade game and they did whatever they could to take quarters out of kids pockets. That's was also a good reason for it being two-player. Less queuing in line.
That was nice insight on the 3DS. My stepson plays his a lot. It's nice to see a little bit about what the fuss is about. Thanks
See, I don't agree with Contra at all. Yes, it's challenging, but it's not as bad as many people make it out to be, at least until you get to the hangar. Once you figure out the game's mechanics (and learn that spread shot > *), it's a fun game with just enough pushback. The other games on this list, however, are the epitomy of what's wrong with many "hard" games. There's a difference between being tough and being absolutely unfair, and most games that deliberately try to be difficult are simply unfair. It's why adventure games often have puzzles that defy all sense of logic, or why games like Super Meat Boy or I Wanna Be The Guy rely on nothing but rote memorization. Ideally a game should be such that it pushes back without being cheap. It's part of why I view Demon's Souls as being superior to Dark Souls. Every death in Demon's Souls is your own damned fault, mostly for being impatient, but Dark Souls seems more content to make things intentionally obtuse and inaccessible. Dark Souls II denying you even the ability to grind seems to be more concerned with being cheap than actually hard.
Contra on NES wasn't that hard.
Neither was Zelda 2 on NES mentioned at the end.
Ghouls and ghosts should have been in the number 5 spot though.
@tempertress Jess for president ! ^_^
may be unfair but not sure about 'harder'... imo, contra was a easy game and i have finished it several times...
The hardest game I've played is the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on NES. It's the only game I've spent countless hours on that I couldn't beat. It was super tough to get to Shredder. And then the times I made it, his gun is a one shot instant kill, and you're sent way back in the insane final level.
If you want to combine "platformer" with "modern" and "insane difficulty", try BloodRayne: Betrayal. Besides being a real challenge, this game is also the best BloodRayne game.
I remember Friday the 13th was impossible... I learned that playing that game and uttering my first curse words that my parents would come to my room and pummel me with a belt haha. oh the good ol' days.
Also, awesome ep Jess. Reminded me of the great times I learned how to rage quit games lol.
Really... Contra? I remember finishing it multiple times when I was 8 or 9, didn't use Konami code.
But to each his own I guess, I've seen Contra on multiple lists of hardest games.
Discworld was a hard game, so was Simon The Sorcerer. Dragon's Lair for the NES had a pretty high difficulty level.
Anyone else ever play the secret difficulty on U.N. Squadron on SNES? That was crazy. Maybe not the hardest thing ever, but still...crazy.
contra and super contra aren't hard games, I finished both when I was like 10 or 11 years old. BUT the first contra for playstation 2... OMG... that was a fucking pain in the ass! but it was pretty fun to play with a homie (:
there are for sure much harder games then Dark Souls ... just take Demon's Souls for example :-)
But both offer ways to play it more difficult, thats what makes the Soul games so fun, both games offer very fast ways to get better equipment fi you know where to get them the whole game is much easier.
And don't forget that the first playthroughs of Souls games meant to be the easy expierence in the games.
You can play Souls games without growing any lvls, or use any good equipment or do builds for very low weapon requirments.
Theres no fixed difficult lvl in the games.good example are the first bosses of both games, you can beat both when you see them for teh first time and both are really hard to beat without some kind of a usefull weapon and just a broken sword.
Games like Contra also had the options to play them in a easy mode, but i am not sure if the first NES contras had that too.
BUt games in times of NES were mostly made to be very hard, just like castlevania, other beat'em ups or most shoot'em ups are very hard to beat.
I nearly made it through Super Contra with a friend within a few days, but the last stage was to hard for us to beat without any cheating.
But thats the way those hard games work, beat up monsters and bosses that are much stronger and harder just with the right timing of acting.
Thats something i really miss in a lot of todays games, ways to die in todays games isn't really fun at all, maybe a grante explodes or die in some quick time sequences.
I am playin The Last of Us now and have to say its sometimes really hard too, but its not one of the great games like Dark Souls, gameplay is to close to uncharted and its only hard because there are lot of situations with one hit death enemys that only needs to reach you to enable their death cut scene, you may have a shift ti kill them, or you dont and thats the only way to beat them when it comes to this, KI wroks bad too sometimes, kill an enemy and get killed by the rest, or do the kill a few secs befoe or later and noone will see that.
Human enemys soemtimes can see you without to do that or see you but they dont do anything.
But i never liked Naughty Dogs games, uncharted is way to mainstream and all of its gameplay mechanics just dont feel any good, the last of us is funt o play but sometimes fighting is boring as the faster ways to play through enemes normaly ends with faster deaths.
And when you beat them all after dying 4-5 times you just think that was very easy ... andi didnt do much diffrent to what i try before.
thats another way to make a game harder, while i think its not the best, surprisng KIs were fun in older games like Deus Ex, its fun to try it again and again while you deosnt had to start from stupid checkpoints but could do quick saves, same with max payne or other PC Games of that time.
Dark Souls offers ways to play through without dying to much as long as you know how, there always an easy way to go, but you may have to find it out, that makes it just great and feels the way how an ARPG shoud work.
The NES alone could offer a list a hundred long. I'm so lucky I not only experienced it but was young enough that life hadn't worn away my patience yet. Contra holds the top spot as being both incredibly hard AND fun to play. Too many games from that era were both hard and lousy (looking at you Ghostbusters).
@crazyj_007123 Was there ANYBODY that beat it without the Konami code?
@Godlikan Pffff... played it for 30 years straight without dieing yet. It's easy when you find out its best to stay away from guns and sharp objects. The traffic parts is a bit dangerous but they're not hard unless you try to rush through them
@Godlikan Yeah, that responsibility level is tough!
@Godlikan my character in life is too old and is gaining mad weight cause I haven't adjusted my eating style to a old man's metabolism
@Godlikan yeah my charachter in life is sh*t :)
@unikat I did not even know there WAS Konami code when I was playing the game. I remember leaving my console (it was a knock-off of NES, because the actual NES was not available in the Czech Republic back then) on during the night so I did not lose my progress and I finished the game several times too. I have recently tried it again and could not understand how I managed to get throught the first level. :D
@Korvus85 Thank you!
@Delston it funny level 1 and 2 are not that bad then bang level 3 and up WTF
@Lykanthropie I'm surprised that it is never mentioned in similar articles & videos...
Demon Souls IS harder than Dark Souls.
@DiamondDM13 I have heard that's a big one on difficulty lists!
