I played Mass Effect first on 360 and didn't understand why people hated the mako. Then I picked it up on PC and realized why it got so much hate. You really have to experience the controls on PC to truly understand why people hate the mako so much. It is ridiculous.

@DrunkenGoon I played it on PC first and had zero problems with the Mako. Wasn't the best controlling vehicle in videogame history, but it was plenty fun. They should've fixed the planet hopping and scouting instead of scuttling it in favor of scan the planet and send a probe minigame crap. The exotic planets really added to the whole ME universe. I remember visiting all these planets, especially in the sequels, that had some fascinating backstory and then all you can do is scan it and drop probes. I want to see planets that are purple rock with raining sulfuric acid. I think they should've made the gravity matter. It would've been awesome operating the Mako and then operating it again in 0.3g or 2.5g.

@179107199999 Don't worry, judging by the response to the video, we're far from alone in loving the Mako, and i'm sure will pick up even more fans in the next game :)

typical foolish comments from gamers and others who think "the mako is a bad idea."

that thought process doesn't even make sense and the argument is invalid.

why? because the mako, in and of itself was a vehicle and nobody in their right mind would say that the mako, as a vehicle, was bad.

one can argue whether or not the repetitious GAMEPLAY GAMEPLAY GAMEPLAY was bad, but, to speak about the vehicle used for the repetitious GAMEPLAY is lacking in critical thought.

and, gasp, here's a thought: IMPROVE the gameplay associated with the mako. whodathunkit?

but, no, instead, we have foolish thoughts and rationales and conclusions like, "the mako is bad. get rid of it. don't innovate. don't improve. it's return is bad. axe it."

@udubdawgz1 Exactly. The concept is sound, its just the environments as people have said, and a deeper implementation into the game is what's needed, But to say "It's bad, get rid of it!" is a massive over reaction and lack of foresight to its potential, not to mention a slap in the face and disrespectful to the many people that loved the Mako and its potential, which judging by the responses to this video, is a lot of us.

The Mako. Love it or hate it - it's coming back. Me - I hated it. I hated the physics, I hated the driving mechanism, I hated the useless weapons. But more than that - I hated the way it just took you out of the feeling of the game. All of a sudden you're playing a dune buggy game, instead of a space opera RPG. It was nothing more than something I gritted my teeth through. Hopefully, the next Mass Effect game won't impose too much of this on the players.

I've gone through all the posts, and judging from the general consensus, Gamespots hipster hatred of the Mako has pretty much fallen on its metaphorical bottom lol. I reckon they thought everyone would agree with them and jump on board, but the reality is, most of the people(if this thread is anything to go by), enjoyed using the Mako as i did, with many pointing out that the Mako wasn't the issue, it was merely the environments and implementation that need improvement and if anything, it was UNDER used.. Its sections in the game made me feel i was in an open universe, and not just in metal corridors all the time, and i loved those moments, though more to do and discover would be welcomed.

All we need is properly realised environments to explore and epic land battles, and we're onto a real winner. By the looks of the outside environments and promise of a much bigger and varied universe to explore in the new game, the Mako could be a major and great part of the game, and it takes a short sighted person to not at least see the potential of the Mako, and worse, insist on it NOT being in the game without knowing anything about the new game!..

I can't begin to describe how much i DISagree with this video!.. I loved the Mako sections in Mass Effect 1! It was the only time in the whole series, i felt i was exploring and at least had the illusion i was in an expansive universe.. It needs a little work to implement it into the game and give it not just exploration missions where you can genuinely discover or witness some great stuff, but also some good story related set pieces, random but fun encounters and epic ground battles, the potential is there for the taking. So speak for yourselves GameSpot, lets wait till we see what they do with it. Maybe the Mako sections are completely optional, so the killjoys with no sense of scope or openness to its potential don't have to use it.

Yes because the thought of them improving the driving mechanics after so many years is just sooo crazy and far out. Let's argue against something we've barely even seen, even though the few seconds we HAVE seen looked good. GAMESPOT.

@001011000101101 Pretty much backs up what I said. Its like some "hip" thing to complain about to fit in with halfwits. First of all it didnt even handle badly...two like EIGHT years later it wouldnt be done better.

@projectpat72988 @001011000101101 Completely agree. I had a lot of fun traversing the terrain in the Mako. If you took the terrain with a bit of thought and attention, it was really fun to drive :)

@projectpat72988 @001011000101101 Exactly. I never understood the handling complaints. Is it really that hard to look in the direction you want to go and then push forward on the left analogue stick? Maybe I'm the smartest person in the world because I sure didn't have many problems with it.

Yup, exactly. I am completely convinced that what you said actually IS the case. All the people who had trouble with it after who knows how many dozens of minutes spent driving it for the requried missions alone....never had it DAWN on them that all they had to do was merely AIM in the direction they wanted to drive. How can you possibly complain about that? You meanz we hazdaaym gune at mane 2 shhoyt? LAMEZ!!

The actual action of driving the Mako was bearable, not great, but not necessarily bad in my opinion, except for the daunting task of sometimes driving up and through sharp edged mountain tops (stay away from that as much as one can); should have added some kind of extra boosters that didn't send you backwards as you're sitting on the hill, so you fall all the way back down. What really sucked about driving it was the boring places you go to. It was basically visiting a place with another color on the palette, and also exploring to get side missions, which when you got out to go inside, had all the same looking areas just changed around slightly on each planet. It was tedious. It's unfortunate that every time I play it, for the sake of getting everything for the story and my character, I go to every planet.

@SpartanEdge @oflow Yup....90% of the driving was optional the couple story missions that DID have Mako sessions where among the shortest in the game. Not to mention they were the linear Mako runs....impossible to get lost or hung up on a mountain side or something and filled with enemies to fight.

I enjoyed the Mako itself a lot, it was the lifeless planets that made it boring to use. If they fully realize the environments that we'll use the Mako for and fine tune it a bit, then the whole Mako experience could be great

Its like one of those "hip" things to talk about how bad the Mako handled. It handled great....it was easy to drive...how hard is it to simply hold down the accelerater and move the camera in the direction you wish to travel? it was the completely barren planets with 20 minute drives doing nothing that made it a problem. Its like everyones mind made these weird connections about it and came to a conclusion in handled poorly when it didnt. I never understood it and still don't.

The Mako was a great idea it just had some issues with implementation. It controlled pretty clunky and the environments were repetitive and had to little actual content. It did give you a sense that planets were actual places and not just some narrow corridors. Removing the Mako was a bad idea and they should have fixed it instead. I'm thrilled that the Mako is making a return!

Same thing with the elevators everyone keeps complaining about. The problem wasn't that it was a bad idea only that it took too long to load the new area into memory. Replacing the elevators with loading screens showing an animation of an elevator was not a step in the right direction...

The Mako wasn't the problem, it was the environments they put it in. It was actually a pretty decent vehicle. It was in fact, pretty badass. Once you figure out that you can zoom the cannon, you are pretty much untouchable.

Jumping over missiles was AWESOME. The real problem was Bioware just threw you in the damn thing and didn't show people how to use it.

@heretrix You hit the nail on the head. It wasn't the Mako, it actually controlled pretty well... it was the lousy planet design. Sometimes they just got too crazy with the steep inclines. I can't tell you how many times I would get stuck in some little valley surrounded in cliffs and would struggle getting up and over one of the walls. That's not fun,... it's tedious. Create unique and interesting planets that are fun to explore in the Mako and you got yourself a winner. ;-)

I thought the Mako was pretty fun and generally liked planet exploration. The problem for me was that the planets were very uninspired, lacking in content, and with terrain that brought out the worst in the Mako's handling. Planet exploration was far more entertaining than the tedious planet scanning.

dont now really, after ME1 I dropped the series, never liked the changes EA did to Dragon Age and ME. RPG for dummies but more story challeging than COD, very linear still. Every game EA takes, turns into crap.

Mako is not a bad idea at all so this video was a waste of time and resources :p

I learned to control both the Mako and the Hammerhead and it was fun :p ... the only problem with planet exploration in ME was the fact that there was nothing much worth exploring :D

The Mako was way better than scanning planets! At least you could kill a thresher maw or shoot some space animals. They just needed more of that. The planets were too barren. Mako rules!! the only time it sucked is when there was a planet with really steep mountains that took forever to get 100%

The Mako from ME1 was okay... for the first few planets. After that it got old real quick and was just a chore to get 100% completion.
