GS News - Xbox One Sales Double and PlayStation 4 Getting Price Hike?
We tell you how Microsoft doubled Xbox One sales in the UK, what Canadians will have to pay for a PS4, and how long the Watch Dogs campaign will be!
by Edmond Tran on
That is totally uncool of Sony to price hike the PS4 and their games in Canada. I don't care what the value of their money is. That's totally screwed up.
Thank you very much Sony. You can have my money, whatever you want I will pay. I'm ignorant, I have no self control, I am a loser. I am a Canadian loser. I love being taken advantage of and screwed by big corporations such as Bell, Videotron, Hydro Quebec, Rogers, and now Sony.
450 Canadian is 289,05 euro.
400 US is 256,93 euro
The current price for Xbone and PS4 in Europe is 399 euro
That's 621,17 Canadian, 555,29 US and 609,07 Australian
quit your bitching
IMO This is an example of why consoles will be heading to digital download only: In order to drive down production costs of physical items. When the N64 came out, carts were $75+ on a $200 console. And if you could find a NeoGeo in the US, forget about it. You'd have been better off buying the arcade cabinet and charging your friends to play. If we want the Big 3 to remain reasonable with hardware prices, we have to change our habit of buying games to digital only.
Usually products go DOWN in price, pretty shitty there Sony. They should at least throw in a game download or the ps eye. And Titanfall is in fact a sales beast, never underestimate the dudebro herds en masse! Infamous SS getting anywhere close to that would be a miracle.
I was thinking of getting a ps4 but now I think I will wait. I might just stick with my wii u! donkey kong has been a lot of fun :-)
they are raising the price because our dollar had dropped below the US Dollar well how come they never lowered the price for us when our dollar was higher than the US dollar hmm well I say a big F-U to sony guess I know which console to buy with my tax return this year hey who knows maybe I'll even have fun with the kinect.
while the reasoning behind the price hike for Canada is a little on the weak side. 450 for a ps4 is still 100 dollars cheaper that what it is in Australia and 70 for games is still about 30 dollars cheaper than they are here also.
The recent price hike for PS4's in Canada is quite disappointing for us Canadians. As a gamer who has hopes of purchasing a PS4 this summer, the $50 price hike is quite unsettling given Sony's official statement about the price increase reflecting 'changes in the (Canadian) market environment.' If an assumption were to be made, it is safe to assume the increase is associated with the weakening Canadian Dollar (CAD).
IF this is the case, what's more unsettling is how the rest of the year will most likely play out.
The CAD is projected to only get weaker (in relation to purchasing power of foreign goods) as the year goes on. With the CAD closing today at approximately .899 to the USD coupled with projections possibly dipping into the .70s in late 2014, it seems like new-fen Canadian console gaming is going to only get pricier as time passes.
With all of this projected currency doom & gloom for Canadian gamers, some ideas spring to mind concerning Sony's decision.
- IF Sony's rationale for raising the PS4's MSRP is based on the weakening CAD, than why hasn't Microsoft (MS) or for that matter, Nintendo followed suit? When looking at the unit cost of goods sold for each the PS4 and XB1, one could argue that raising the price is a financial no-brainer since each console was being sold slightly above its actual cost to produce. YET, with MS having the pricier console in terms of manufacturing costs and MSRP, Sony's new $450 price tag was poorly thought out, both in terms of goodwill towards Canadian gamers and in terms of marketing/promotional timing. MS in particular is not doing so well when comparing manufacturing + MSRP in relation to the weakening CAD.
- IF MS is absorbing the adverse impact of the weakening CAD, Sony should follow suit. Since Sony has strongly marketed the PS4 as the premier console for 'gamers,' this price increase doesn't match up to that claim. And if MS and Nintendo are consciously holding fast with their pricing to appeal to gamers, than hi5s to their execs. Their current and stabilized pricing is in fact, 'pro-gamer,' when compared to Sony's.
- IF the scenario that the weakening CAD is the primary reason for the MSRP increase, than Canada should expect the rest of the gaming industry to follow suit. Consoles; new games; accessories; you name it. All console gaming (for that matter, gaming in general) will increase in price, across all platforms.
I'm curious to see how console gaming pricing in Canada will play out for the rest of 2014. Here's to hoping it won't get too outrageous.
Oh and thanks Jess for rocking GS News. You're doing a solid job!
As a Canadian who was planning on buying a PS4 this year, I reckon this is super uncool. Now I'm not going to buy one until a price drop which should naturally occur a few years into the new gen's life cycle. By then there will probably be some fresh newfangled slimmer redesign as well so it should be win-win.
Ugh.. I guess I'll be waiting for price drops on games I want, no more first day buys. Pricing is getting just wayyy too rediculous. $60 was hard enough to justify and now this. Aren't prices suppose to come down like BluRays/DVDs did and not go the other way?
Us Canadians always get jacked. Maybe if they had any PS4's in stock here they could actually make some money.
Really? This is breaking news? EB Games, Amazon, all increased the prices on next gen games because of the weak Canadian Dollar. I won't be susprised to see X-Box One increase in price.
As to this being the downfall to Sony? Riiiiight.. sure... Xbox and PS will be around to the end.
So like.. history repeating itself? Maybe everyone forgot that the Xbox360 FAILED before it rose and beat everything. Red rings bad games, I remember going through 7 360's. Wait and see i say.
The PS4 is not on my radar anymore. Not for the extra $50 but for the principal of the thing. Sadly, I fear the Sony bean counters did not do their homework because, by my cost-benefit calculations, they will lose big time on their greedy decision. I think there are a lot of Canadians, such as myself, who wanted the console but it was never available will just say "F-it". The XBoxone is an amazing machine and for $50 more you get a 2nd generation Kinect, plus the game Titanfall. Bad Sony marketing as well.
A couple of days ago P$ was ahead of M$, now it's the other way around, can you see the lack of consistency and the obvious marketing ploy from both xbox, ps and gamespot? :))
I swear, it seems like one week Sony is paying Gamespot and the next week MS is paying them. Here's a thought, BOTH SYSTEMS ARE GOOD! Even the damn Wii U is eventually going to have some good games. And PC users, yes, we get it, you have a fancy computer you play games on, great. Lets get back to gaming ladies and gentlemen.
i reckon both consoles should have been made backwards compatible, this way no one would be bitching over games etc... they could still have played everything else from the old consoles and still have fun... but hey ms and sony love to mess with people and decided "f**k it make them so they cant play old on new" "make them pay for totally rubbish over hyped games"...
its also the same with game developers... they are raking out games which dont even look good to play and are overly hyped prior to launch...but hey everyone's gotta make chump change right...
sony feeling the price fatigue lol, ms stuck to their initial price but only a 30 drop and yet sony like to stand tall and proud yeah whatever hence the price hike, wont be too long before the rest of the world gets the hike... Canada only being used like lab rats for sony to experiment on...
What? You mean Canadians have to pay the same as we in the US for their PS4! SONY! You heartless monsters! The XBOX ONE is tooooootally going to rebound from it's disgraced failure status because of this.
@Inlexis that before or after taxes ? I live in Ontario, Canada. So a PS4 there is $ 449.00 Before Taxes. After Taxes, $ it's 507.37 as opposed to $ 450.87 after taxes, if those Sony Dickheads had not jacked up the price. So Dont tell us Canadians to quit bitching, eh ?
@klugenbeel Spoken like a sexually frustrated man who has never actually MET a ditz.
@screentalker to be fair DVDs cost pennies to make. Guess you can include plastic cover and shipping. $2 total?
But regardless I dont like using game discs anymore ever since instruction booklets are no longer fun to collect and i hate getting up and switching discs for games
@rickphoenixxx yeah I have a few Sony fan boy friends and they are not interested in Infamous SS at all but that's not to say it wont be great !
Believe me after a week with kinect you'll wonder what u done without it. I was doubtful but they are gone. I have ps4 to but the ps eye is just not the same still a great console though.
@Imperiusmax I think Sony earns so little for every PS4 sold, and so when the CA currency drops, they earn even less from PS4. No PS4 official price drop will be seen soon, while Xbox One is cheaper when Titanfall game is taken out.
I understand everything you are saying but Sony doesn't have the cash that Microsoft and Nintendo does. It is harder for them to absorb the change in market. It is however disappointing for Candadian gamers that this occurred.
@Janpieterzun Define "beat everything"... 360 finished last in the 3 horse console race, even tho their console had a 1 year head start and replacement systems were apparently counted in the total sales.
@Janpieterzun At this point in time I believe both systems are a failure because both systems have been out for almost 6 MONTHS and offer basically the same games as they did in November
@RyogaRod Odd comment about the WiiU imo, as if you look at Metacritic avg's for all games on all 3 consoles, WiiU's certainly doing the best at the moment. If you remove RayMan from the equation (cause its on all three consoles) then XB1 has zero games rated 90 or above, and PS4 only has has two "indy" games rated that high. Games in the 80's make the case eve better for the WiiU at the moment.
Sure the WiiU had a head start etc, but give it some credit, it has more decent games that the other consoles at the moment, and thats going by the collective opinions of tons of major review sites, not mine/your/etc personal opinions.
For the record, I don't currently own any of the newest gen consoles but I borrowed my friends WiiU a week or two ago. I have a very good PC and so far just haven't felt a compelling reason (ie diehard must have exclusive) to get any of the consoles. It's a bit unusual for me cause I've more or less had every system ever made since the days of Atari's and Coleco's etc.
@jameshubert12 Backwards compatibility in a console always makes the console cost more. A changeover to x86 architecture made it even less feasible than normal this go-around... personally I don't get it anyways, if you really wanted to play last gen games, wouldn't you of already played them last gen, with your last gen console?
@jameshubert12 thats one cool thing about PC i can still play games made in the 90s!
@ticcore 1 Canadian Dollar equals 0.90 US Dollar
@UNCStriker88 Pee Dollar 4 :3
Just saw that, and laughed.
@UNCStriker88 I was about to say the same thing about Titanfall
@jerusaelem LOL I have met plenty of ditzs and your calling the guy with a gf sexually frustrated... LOLZ. Don't be mad because i called your wanna-be gf a ditz, have fun in your basement!
@kingtrax Says the guy from the country that has to keep raising the debt ceiling to avoid being repossessed by China... Enjoy that next city going bankrupt (Hello Detroit)
never hear or read the word ditz before ;-)
but now i know the meaning ...
her work as a host here is simply bad, just because she is a real ditz.
But that fits for Gamesport overall, its just a few years till thes site changed a lot and turned the wrong way.
I read comments about her nice look, look at her face and her personality i dont't think thats a nice look ...
