GS News - Xbox One controller design costs, Wii U needs games
Microsoft confirm they threw hundreds of millions on the Xbox One controller design, Iwata says the Wii U isn’t expensive (just needs software) also, a gaming treadmill!
by Edmond Tran and by Jess McDonell on
I don't have $500 to spend on a treadmill but I love the idea of getting real exercise while running around Skyrim. Also, I don't like the idea of strapping a TV to my face but would be more inclined to do so if I had the treadmill...and no one was around to see me...Yeah, no.
you better be pretty damn rich to afford that treadmill. for one thing, you need a living room big enough to house the thing.
I just want to remind everyone of the early 90's virtual reality failures.
I'm all for the OR but that treadmill will not be successful.
@Saketume I get a feeling of Nostalgia O.O
But seriously. I don't need an Oculus Rift. Just Jess's wardrobe.
That came out creepier than I meant it to be.
Papers please is awesome, and i think the treadmill thingy is great, finally we have an excuse when someone says: "you are wasting your life", no i'm not i we been walking all day long on a treadmill.
Look, let's just be honest, the Wii is years behind its competitors in regards to gaming graphics, originality and innovation and a whole lot of things I can't even begin to describe. Granted, they are trying to appeal to a younger audience but the younger audience isn't stupid either. Kids have smart phones as early as 5 and they probably play games on their phones with more depth and graphics then the Wii. I think Nintendo is stuck on believing what they feel is right for their customers instead of utilizing basic strategies like consumer trends and demand. If someone demands a hamburger, you don't give them a hot dog, you give them a hamburger.
@Pheonix985 But i like hotdogs! Why can't i have hot dogs?......because not everyone wants hamburgers.
The Ps4 it's pretty much the same as the Ps3 but with better graphics. The same goes for the Xbox One but with the TV thing. That's innovative to you? Watching TV on your TV is more innovative than the controller/pad?
It is certainly true that Nintendo's consoles are behind the times technically in some respects, but it is certainly not true that they are behind in originality and innovation. Not all of their creative ideas are equally good, but they do their best to be different.
@ItaChu HUNDREDS of millions. I hope it makes breakfast and cures depression...
Oh wow, that game treadmill looks brilliant, I want one so much =)
It's all coming at once, all they need now is smell O vision and feeling / pain sensors then it's all checked.
Oculus rift has: goggles, treadmill thingy, and shoes... all they need now is a storm trooper costume and there good :D
The Wii U definatley needs more games. They need to get more people to develop games for it. 3rd party support, Nintendo needs it bad. I do not think they will be able to survive only on nintendo made games and a small, small amount of 3rd party games.
Pikmin 3 looks really cool though, I like the Pikmin games :)
by default i love the feel of the x360 controller coz it feels meaty and solid, has abit of weight to it as well kinda makes it feel like its built to last, but i find the thumbstick doesn't have a good grip on it, on most games it works fine, but when i play games like fifa, holding the the thumbstick left or right after 10 - 15secs, my thumb slides off the thumbstick and then have to reposition my thumb
as for the ps3 controller, feels abit light for my taste, i don't mind the shape but i love the grip, feels like theres spunk between my thumb and the thumbstick, i've never had to reposition my thumb on the ps3 controller before
durability wise, both are in perfect working condition (no dead zones, none of the buttons are jammed) but i think my x360 controller is getting abit loose, sometimes i push up and let go and it still continues to walk up, rarely happens and no biggie had the controller for like almost 4 years i think
as for the new x1 controller, i don't know how they can improve but i think its good they took the disc thing out of the d-pad, other then that can't really comment since haven't got my hands on either of the new consoles controller yet
Don't know about xone controller.... I loved the Oculus rift motion control, definitely gonna buy one. :) Virtual world, Here I come. :D
@Bhargav_pvs Dude i tried out both.....xbone controller rumble feature is really badas$ man lol ps4 controller really after 30 seconds felt the same as ps3 controller to me
The Xbox controller was already excelent, the new one looks pretty much te same except for a few tweaks, I wonder where those millions of dollars were spent!
@Rtarroyo The millions of $ probably went to some dodgy kickstarter project that M$ set up secretly and failed. Never to be seen again.
I say SCREW kickstarter with their BS donation scheme. If I`m gonna pay that much money I expect stock share options and dividends on the profits. Seriously, people giving away hundreds or thousands of $ and get next to nothing for their cash. No thanks, I can buy a new game that I want for a fraction of the price. If the game is not available I`ll go to a forum and let developers know what I want. NO insane donations and no BS. Stop making these `Indie` developers into rich fat-cats, they will turn into EA whores.
Also I would like to note the ps controller design with that fkingg brake/separation in the D-pad....(I'm aware its one peice of plastic inside). DESTROYS your thumbs playing fighting games for long hours I can play on either controller doesnt matter to me but just wanted to note. They need to go back to drawing board on that aspect,,seriously! EVERYTIME I want to play hardcore i have to do my secret technique lmao put my thumb under the shirt im wearing to decrease the friction and make my thumb glide over the DPad without getting hella blisters hahaha
We'll see if the millions invested towards the R&D for Xbox One controllers prove to be worth it. Still too early to say anything right now, there are 3 more months to go.
And that treadmill, holy macaroni. I might buy that, but not so soon even if it's available right now. That's going to spill some serious sweat, and they won't call us gamers living sedentary lifestyle anymore!
Looks like M$ isn't f*king around with Sony anymore. They officially stated Kinect won't be needed online 24/7, and that you'll be able to turn it off in the settings...=\ Features wise and online wise being someone that try's to complete any game i can possibly find on ANY console, that is even worth a full play through.... xblive kicked Sony's online networks ass....the fact you cant play music while you play..(i'm talking steaming music from Digitallyimported) and way more ppl with headsets on xblive...and matches synced up fast as hell...updates downloaded faster....xb360/ live was farrrr more fun and entertaining. ya ya ps3 had Last of us..GOW, LBP, uncharted, kill zone=\...and that was it most of those i completed fast as fuck and the ps3 collected hella dust. so back to my main point i tried out both xb1 controllers and ps4...m$ got em beat again there...them triggers are bada$s lol IMO. I'm still mad at Sony for what they pulled with the six-axis BS made me buy a crap load of controllers at launch only to revise them with the vibration wtf and i had to re-buy 4 more controllers wtffff. If they do that again with ps4 i will be fking pissed! texture vise ps3 won for sure.....and i think it will be a tad better than xb1 but we wont know until full ability of the ps4 is being used by the developers....which won't be for a long time..LOL. So idk i will probably end up getting both but i will probably end up playing the xb1 more as i have shit load of old friends on there. =)
I know it's lame, but I actually think the treadmill is pretty cool. God knows I could run marathons by now if I had to cover as much ground as I have in games. Oh and why was that much money necessary to develop a new controller? The one for the 360 is fine, save the d-pad. Still not buy Xbox One as long as the Kinect is there... watching.
@Mud_Buttler "Still not buy Xbox One as long as the Kinect is there... watching." I just told you u can turn it off in the settings.
At 2:30 ....paleness combined with the redness of the eyes........SHE IS A VAMPIRE ....jess which clan are you from ? :)
OmniTreadmill=COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY
Occulus Rift= Cool but not necessary
For me , the old thing is good ie looking at a Tv screen with a controller.......If you want to spend that much money combined.....spend it on a good PC
with all this pre-ordering of consoles and everything...I was wondering...Hasn't anyone thought of all the problems we had to face when we bought NEW PS3s or Xbox360s...The Yellow Light of Death (happened to me ) and the red ring of death ...... I will wait at least for one year until all the problems subside and the ps4 library fills up.
Been playing Diablo 2 Jess. Shame thay haven't made a game to improve upon and beat it yet lol, man im old-school..its like 2013 already.
With games like Torment and Project eternity on kickstarter, theres still a market to tap if they can raise 8 million total just in donations combined.. Aside from Grim Dawn.
These games suffer that compete from a lack of expanse from what games like D2 brought in imo, D2 wasn't a massive game per say anyways.BTW I hate the cartoony look in these types of games, been done to death. yeah there's path of exile but its mix of monsters and and envirnments is a little substandered, the critters look under powered and frankly the variety is weak in presentation. Theres so much folklore anyone can pull from griffons, harpys and goblins aren't boring its presentation..
Anyways you asked peace.
Can't wait to get my Xbox One!!!
The running in place thing looks rediculous but I'm sure in a couple years that everyone will want one
It's just another gimmick in my opinion.
Sure it may be fun but you would get pretty sick of it, pretty quick.
I prefer sitting on my arse while gaming. Which is why I wasn't interested in the Wii, nor the Kinect.
No doubt you are right though, many people will want one.
I don't see that big a difference between the 360 and X1 controller, at least not different or more advanced to warrant such high development and R & D costs.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see just how it feels and plays.
The triggers vibrate. That's about it.
Although they did have a dozen prototypes at E3 and had all those friction tests. Either way, I think they spent too much for not much return. And all for a controller that's still shit in my opinion.
I don't know how people can like the Xbox controllers. Maybe they're just kids who've never used anything else??
It's so uncomfortable, the assymetrical analogues are a pain and unnatural. The D-pad still looks impractical and unusable. All that money spent on what? Vibrating triggers? To do what? Simulate firing a gun? Why not just make the Xbox controller a gun peripheral, it doesn't really get used for anything other than FPS games does it? I mean, that's what it is specfically designed for.
@Scorpion1813 What's a better controller you reckon?
@Scorpion1813 Just because Sony basically did nothing really good and useful to improve its controller doesn't mean you have to be such a hater. What is the practical use of this touchpad thing other than throw imaginary robots around using a camera that you won't even get with your system. Ummm I think that's about the only new thing on it, oh yea, a crappy speaker like the one in the old Wii...lame
@Scorpion1813 why are you insulting people because of the controllers they play games with you utter flid?! Plus the vibrating triggers could be great, we don't know because it's not even out yet. I do think they spent far too much money creating it, but I'm willing to bet it's just as good as the last controller.
@Scorpion1813 Yeah I really hate the d-pad, for fighting games or anything else actually, it sucks. They should have used the ps3-2 controller, change the triggers to something different so I don't accidentally kill my shop owner in front of my Demon's Souls character, when I put the controller down on my lap. And the left stick and right stick swap is like the only good thing on the xbox controller.
I don't get your point here? I was talking about the Xbox controller. You, for some reason, are talking about the PS controller. Again, I don't get why.
Maybe you think, just because I don't like something MS do, that I automatically love everything Sony do. I don't. There are things about Sony's controllers I don't like either, but that's not what's being discussed is it.
Just as good as the last controller, which was shit.
Insulting people? No. Take note of the questionmarks. I was more asking if people only like it because that's what they grew up with. I grew up with joysticks on the Commadore 64, and Sega Mega Drive controllers, and I still think they are superior to the XBox controllers.
Just because you take offense to something doesn't mean I was trying to insult you.
You like the assymetrical design of the analogue sticks?
@Scorpion1813 even though microsoft did still cheap out and not put a freaking rechargeable battery pack in the controller, now that is stupid
I really hope you're not trying to bait me into a console war discussion. Because I'm seriously not interested in that.
I'm not going to claim other controllers are without their faults. They all have problems. There is no "perfect" controller. But I'm not ready to accept that the XBox controller is "the best", like so many people claim.
But that's what I don't get: why it's considered the best by so many, despite it's "faults"? I know everyone has their own opinion, and people may just be used to certain things, thus my question: did people grow up with this and don't know any different?
Admittedly, I could have worded that question better - to be less "insulting". But the question still stands.
Call me a hater or whatever you want, but if I had to pick one thing I don't like about the Xbox it would be the controller.
