GS News - Watch Dogs Gets Uplay, Who thinks the Kinect is a “Joke”?
A big-name developer has harsh words for the “unnecessary” Kinect, Watch Dogs PC specs are released, and the new Gears of War will be “innovative”?
by Edmond Tran on
well that wasn't very surprising that even the steam version is going to require uplay. I already noticed that they did that with blood dragon a year ago.
While I think the jury is still out on whether the Kinect will prove useful, I do think that Molyneux is an idiot.
Watch Dogs: a Ubisoft game. It came as no surprise to me at all that it would require UPlay regardless of STEAM purchase. Not sure why ppl are surprised about it.
I myself am tired of logging on into three different programs to play a game i.e. STEAM, origin and Uplay.
But not much there can be done. The bright side? Uplay beats out origin XD
Kinect still has to prove it is worth the cost, but I for one am happy to let it do so. Those people who just say "Kinect sucks! Waahh!" They deserve to have the same hardware for the next twenty years.
UPlay was on Assassin's Creed IV and it was how they worked out the community challenges and things. I kind of liked that. If it does what it does correctly and doesn't just break the game I don't see how it is such a big deal really.
Most people have tonnes of random shit on their computers anyway. Adding one more program will hardly hurt.
RE: Watch Dogs requirements
I have zero sympathy for the PC master race types who now have to spend time and money upgrading their hardware.
all my friends that have a Kinect don't use it so it does seem a little unnecessary . also I'm just excited for watch dogs :-)
Well Microsoft did lower the price of the Xbox One and still include the Kinect, because they can afford to do that so why keep whining about it?
It cracks me up that you still have to let some folks know that you're Australian. Of course I know folks where I live who have never even been across state lines, so I guess some folks wouldn't know an Aussie accent. Their loss!
Do any of us feel that Molyneux is relevant anymore (if ever)? Funny that he waits until now to make the Kinect statements. Regardless of the worth of the Kinect, his comments smack of pandering to me just so folks will report on him. Don't feed the troll...
Uplay - The requirement is what it is. However, I agree that it would be much nicer without any of these platforms being required.
Innovative Gears is as much a joke as Molyneux calling anything as much as Molyneux is a joke and it looke like the Watch Dogs Specs are a joke too :p
Xbox is trying to position itself as a 'family entertainment machine' with the Kinect, which isn't going to work. Their core audience are gamers. The biggest selling games will be games that don't really require any flapping around or shouts...maybe they can shoe horn "Medic!" into the next Halo? Even with, rubbish, games like Rivals the Kinect is lack luster. The technology just isn't responsive enough and thus it being forced upon consumers is bad for said customers pockets...dust collecter. He is also correct, outside the US the XB1 is essentially a slightly less powerful PS4 with equipment that is useless. Maybe it should be called 'Murica Box 1?
Gears to me is like Halo, COD etc they were cracking at the start(or were they? Maybe with rose tinted spectacles we think they were better than they were because there was nothing to compare them with?)but after a while they have become a satire of themselves. Technically brilliant but over done and in the end dull as dish water. I wouldn't hold my breathe for anything inspirational to come.
It's games like Watchdogs that make me glad I still haven't bothered with building a gaming rig. I am the sort of person that would be spending hundreds every year keeping the damn thing top notch...my bank would cry! Uplay and the likes are a layer of pain in the a*s, I have dud email address's for this very thing!
The Kinect hardware may not be a joke however it's current application may well be. For a piece of hardware that increases the expense of the console beyond its competition without providing the "must have" Kinect games, I'm puzzled by its intent. Are Kinect games unannounced? Are they just late? Was it all about "Minority Report" TV control? If it is, then why isn't this functionality available in major countries such as the U.K., Australia, and elsewhere? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The next Gears of War
I liked how Gears of War Judgment was in the background showing Sofia voiced by Ali Hillis.
Sofia is an attractive character especially with that attractive red hair. My impetus for buying the game was Ali Hillis.
If the next Gear of War judgement includes and attractive leading lady, then I'm interested as is the case with many games.
Kinect being a joke.
I think so. Microsoft put in all that money into developing Kinect and haven't done much with it.
They should have left it to the niche markets and not forced it on everyone. Niche markets like exercise, sign language training, Occupational Therapy, Recreational Therapy, Dance instruction, and other things outside of gaming. I think Microsoft should have included a better graphics chip and a controller with more buttons or a touch pad instead of Kinect.
I'm an Xbot,or was an Xbot, but I'm happy I went with the PS4.
My experience: You sign in once to Uplay and its completely seamless the rest of the time (on the 360). I don't know how it is on the PC. I agree, it's silly and unnecessary.
Great show. Thank you Jess.
"The premier gaming news show on the Internet hosted by an Australian, produced in Sydney."
I agree. And you do it better than anyone else. No one can touch Jess. No one can touch that Australian accent. I truly mean that.
I'm surprised Jess hasn't received a bunch of 6 and 7 figure job offers from Hollywood or other places. Maybe she will. I'd be surprised if Jess doesn't have a bunch of millionaire and billionaire admirers wanting her as their significant other and wife of the future. Maybe she does.
I'm surprised Jess hasn't had one of her admirers buy her that PS4 she wants so she can stop being enslaved to Steam.
Uplay sucks just like GFWL. It is a pointless requirement. Ubisoft you're encouraging piracy with your lame DRM.
Is anyone really surprised by Watch Dogs requiring Uplay? AC: Black Flag, Far Cry 3 & other Ubi games all have.
The only real problem with the platform is the tendency to sometimes corrupt your save files, causing you to lose hours of progress... OK I guess that is a bit of a problem. Luckily Windows 7 automatically backs up the folder & you can roll it back by a day, but still pretty awful. This has happened to both me & a friend in different games.
Regardless, I'll probably buy it on Uplay rather than Steam since it will save me a couple of bucks on the exchange rate & I'll have to use it anyway.
Saying "Watch dogs gets Uplay", makes it seem like a benefit...
More accurate would be "Watch dogs forces Uplay down gamers throats while we choke and gag".
Splinter Cell Blacklist was forced through uPlay even though it was bought through Steam and it was an UTTER and COMPLETE nightmare. Literally one of the worst "integrations" that Ubisoft ever ham-fisted.
I cannot wait to see how bad this iteration butchers the experience.
Oh, and Ubi, don't ever let me catch you touting the number of users uPlay has when you use the same underhanded tactics to heavy-hand your consumers to use your distribution system (which offers absolutely NO benefit to the consumer over what they already have in place) that EA does with Origin; you're no better.
I won't buy an Xbox until they sell them without mandatory Kinect.
Uplay is just another obstacle. I'd rather not have it, but it's not a deal breaker at this point.
I still like Gears of War, let's hope for the best.
Also i have all the platforms, and i will get Watch Dogs for PS4, lolol.
Jess, please tell me that you're not one of these "I hate Uplay just because it's not Steam" people...
That would actually make ME very sad. :-|
@tornado9632 I will work a bit on her animations... Wait what ? :P
@Dannystaples14 sorry but the kinect is horrible. They shouldn't have launched the Xbox one if it had almost no kinect titles. You know the reason why the kinect is there. But what's funny is you can use voice commands through a ps4 headset. Why can't Xbox do this instead of making me buy a pointless camera.
@youre_a_sheep I silently wonder sometimes if those who need every new graphics card that comes out are also complaining about microtransactions and and day one dlc's :)
There's just disadvantage to buy it on a ps4 also. All these costs can be reduced :)
@youre_a_sheep IMO, if you're a serious PC gamer, you'll build ur rig with the latest and greatest money can buy if not, research your games to include not yet released and purchase what is necessary. I dropped 1.7K on my system early this year and will continue to support all the games I'm interested in. Unless their is another game that will push the graphics like Crysis 4 (just example, no mention of announcement anywhere) maybe then I'll upgrade vid card.
To be fair, requiring a 64-bit OS is sort of a blind side as most house hold gamers have 32-bit OS, so the complaints are understandable. I lucked out and went with Win7 64-bit ultimate because I wanted the best OS version. One source of information was from the STEAM hardware survey where it points out 50% have 32bit OS with less than 4GB of RAM. These are either budget built systems or kiddies playing on their parents desktop which was purchased at a name brand store.
@youre_a_sheep Especially if they need an 8 core. Even now when there are some 16 cores knocking around they are really not cheap at all.
@UNCStriker88 Did they drop it in the US or anywhere else? I know they dropped it here in the UK and it is the reason I am now definitely going to be buying Xbox again this generation. At this stage if they ditched the Kinect I still don't imagine they would drop the price that much more anyway. In the UK the Xbox One is only £30 more than the PS4 now.
They can shave off another £30 if they want but honestly it makes very little difference to me at this stage.
@TimberWolf_CLT He is such an arrogant fool it almost makes me feel sorry for him. He had one hit with Fable and now has his name on random gaming articles. Why I would listen to him in that case on anything gaming related is kind of the point.
@SaintsRowLA Maybe they have.
@bbq_R0ADK1LL and that is why you have a PS4
Dude, just trust your instincts, and live with no regrets.
@homelessgamer what are you talking about ? you just got a hi five by the most admired person gamespot, what more do you want ? lol
Most, but not all the time, the opposite of love isn't hate, it's apathy or disinterest.
If people hated you, you would probably be more 'loved'.
Try the trolling route. Be that bad boy with an edge.
A cry for help. You feel neglected, ignored and unloved. I upvoted ya. I hope you feel better.
I think most people just post and run. I don't think they stick around for too long at this disfunctioning webpage for too long to socialize. If other people are like me, they don't receive e-mail notifications when someone responds to likes their posts like in the Discussion Fora, or like in the past.
In about 3 minutes, I'll be out of here. Nice talking to you.
@LordCrash88 Steam or GTFO. Nah just kidding. I wish all games were on GOG. But what can we do. At least Steam isn't as poorly made like Uplay or GFWL.
@LordCrash88 I don't like Steam either. I don't like playing through platforms. But I do because I must.
@scarred_fox @youre_a_sheep I agree with scarred_fox, upgrading our PCs is "what we do". We enjoy it. That's why we build custom rigs. We'd be upgrading our systems components regardless of what games come out. We're hobbyists and enthusiasts. We're gamers. For me it's just how I grew up. Dismantling PCs to learn them and then building them for ourselves, friends and family. We're techs at heart and we pride ourselves on putting together great PCs.
I'm not trying to sound elitist in my comments I'm just expressing my opinions about my hobby. It's something I love to do. I'll always be doing it, regardless if it's my PC rig or if it's helping others troubleshoot or upgrade theirs.
Also, I have nothing against those who buy pre-built machines either. Most of my work as a technician is working on those. It's fun to troubleshoot and help out people who might not be as tech savvy.
@Dannystaples14 I know, it'd be like asking Kojima for advice in how to treat women nicely and as equals...
@diego_corleone Thank you Yoda.
