GS News Top 5 - Sony Wants YOU To Play Indies, Call of Duty boasts “photorealism”
Controversy erupts as females are barred from a Hearthstone tournament, GameStop wants your Kinect, and Sony and Call of Duty tell us a bunch of things!
I've been skeptical about this VR thing for a long time - the memories of VirtualBoy never seem to fade. But now the price seems to be right, and the support from the dev community is swelling. I'm actually on the verge of being excited, and sincerely hope that Sony doesn't build yet another peripheral that doesn't sell. On the AAA vs Indie thing I just don't get it - apart from the masterpieces by NaughtyDog I honestly have a much richer experience in a world lovingly crafted by a smaller team. Games seem to lose their cohesiveness when they scale to a certain size - perhaps this is why we are all so pumped about projects such as No Mans Sky.
Here's what I think is happening with Sony. They're very cash strapped so they can't support multiple AAA titles financially. So in order to to stay afloat they're relying on indie devs to support them. It's really a troubling situation at SCE. A lot of project cancellations, layoffs, key people jumping ship, and studio closures. It's not reassuring to PS4 and Vita owners. I'll hold off until next year to see where they're at financially but for now I'm not too confident purchasing a PS4. We'll see.
When it comes to indie games i do love them and AAA titles are good but NOT all of them. The way i see it the indie games seem to be giving a good run when up against the bigger titles. The main genre i've been seeing that seems to do very well in are Sandbox (minecraft, rust, dont starve, etc etc and survival horror games like Routine (which im kinda excited about), Nether, etc etc. Indie games will always hold a special place in my heart since most AAA titles are becoming rinse and repeat the more i see them.
I'm glad they change their minds about the Hearthstone tournament. That was just asking for trouble. =P
Can't believe people didn't play Resogun even when they could for free! It's a great game.
That is photo realism? CoD likes to copy/paste. They'll be waiting for someone else to implement photo realism into their game before they even try to mess with it. Keep up the horrid work CoD.
The way it looks to me, is Sony believes they have the gaming market by the balls. They are also hurting financially and probably can't put out the number of 1st party titles they used to so they are trying to steer the market to indie games.. I have a ps2/3/4 and am a little concerned. First they say Vita wont see many big titles and now it seems they are trying to control the crowd to indies. I am glad I also own an Xbox One....
I think the reason so many people flock toward the AAA titles is that they are the big, showy, flashy titles that draw people to a console in the first place. People want to see what these machines are capable of and the games that usually push the graphical limits are the AAA games. It's also a time management problem as well. I love my indie games as much as my big first party titles, but when somebody works 40 plus hours a week and has family constraints as well sometimes the smaller indy titles fall through the cracks.
Or at the same time, the advertising isn't as great, and if you don't have the time to actively seek out the indie titles you don't even know where to begin.
The other major problem is finding adequate reviews for some of the smaller indy titles. People don't know whats good or bad so instead they just avoid the titles.
Do Australians not like Americans or something? What's the deal with that intro. I also remember her making a snide comment on Martin Luther King jr day also.
Why buy a PS4 to play indies when any basic PC can run most of them with no problem? If you're watching this, then chances are you already have an Indiestation.
Whoever said CoD would look photorealistic must have been huffing something. We've already seen gameplay footage and if every other game ever shown at E3 is any indication, it won't even look that good on release.
I prefer AAAs to Indies in general but I am having a blast with Rogue Legacy at the moment.
If a great AAA comes out I will drop everything for it. It is the fact that there are so many Indies that are the same sort of thing that annoys me with them. Great Indies get swamped the second they are released by all the crap clones out there plaguing places like Steam, which is a damn shame. Plus they don't give the narrative and character driven epicness that only a AAA is capable of.
Both are great but they are awesome for different reasons.
Though I didn't know Resogun didn't sell that well even though it was free! Man I bet Sony are a little worried right now about that.
The PS4 better have Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. Not sure if that is considered an indie game. But it would help push me towards getting a console :)
Whoever missed Resogun missed a great title. To be honest, out of the launch titles I enjoyed Resogun, Bf4 and Lego Marvel the most :s And now with the ship editor and the hero DLC Resogun got even better :D
Oh and those CoD dudes need to learn what photorealism is. Everyone sees the difference between the real Kevin Spacy and this model they have. They haven't even reached the uncanny valley yet
I love Sony for embracing indi games, but I just wish the devs would move away from the pixel scene. it's overdone
@rasterror Yeah I think they are leaning on the PStation brand to help keep the company floating. Time will tell if it works.
@watchdogsrules Why would anyone want games to look like real life. In that case go enlist. The Elite need more young and dumb to go die for 'em.
@Sevenizz Sony know Indie games are gonna need to fill in alot of time till AAA titles being to take hold, Due to the new architecture of the Xbone and PS4 it will probably be another 18 months till AAA games are being released at a constant rate, So Sony are gonna push indie titles to help sell their system they dont want to stall like the Wii U.
@Sevenizz dahw... Microsofts personal whinebitch is here again...
@skiggy34 Yeah because trying to stimulate people to also play indies says something about AAA title's....
@MagnusLensher I agree. With my gaming time limited now I don't get to play everything. So I sacrifice on indies first. They have their place, but I didn't buy new consoles in order for them to be the big focus. Many are great 2D games that could have been done on last gen.
@MagnusLensher Agreed with most of what you said except the indie review part. I see lots of indie reviews they just get much higher ratings than they often deserve because the reviewer loves indies.
Cynical, cynical, cynical. Make a mountain out of nothing. Of course having July 4th as a holiday might seem a bit odd in foreign countries, just like their holidays might seem different to Americans.
Be cynical, assume the worst about people, make a mountain out of nothing, expect perfection out of everyone -- no wonder why you alienate everyone. No wonder why everyone says "on no" when you walk into the room.
If you think Jess is less than perfect, well nobody is -- THE GRASS ISN'T GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE. You're always going to be miserable. No one will ever measure up. You will alienate everyone if you expect perfection. If you expect perfection out of yourself, you will always be miserable too. You aren't perfect either.
@sunyatanada76 Yeah she's mad because they don't have stupid holidays in Australia lol. (Independence Day isn't one of those)
@rickphoenixxx Why would you buy a console for just indies? You also do this for multimedia purposes and/or the exclusives?
Besides, not all indies are also for pc.
@prodigy_69 It's easier to make a good pizel side scroller with few people than a big ambitious title. It's not that they don't want to move to something else, but it's a good way to learn what you're doing. It's a learning and developmental process. The indie's are the next big thing, and Sony understands that. AAA is getting too costly.
The amount of revenue the Playstation division brings in is far from enough to support the company. The division just lost $79 million this past quarter so that doesn't bode well either. Sony is gonna need a miracle to keep from filing bankruptcy and they're gonna need it very soon.
@Sevenizz So? Sony's been focusing on indies too last gen... So far PSN had the best indies imo
@twisted_outlaw @prodigy_69 I dont have a problem if indies are really where the industry is going. However if indies are going to lead this gen then at least have them look like Outlast. If the games are going to look like atari/ 8-bit nintendo games, then I am going to sell my ps4 and stick with my xbox one. MS has money and will make AAA titles...
Sony will been fine fellas. Fortune 500 company (top 100), best selling next gen console, and owner of everything from media formats to cell phones. I dont think there goin anywhere anytime soon. Theyve been around since the forties so please lets all just breathe.
There reason for pushing indie games dont matter. We as gamers should apperciate those games more, they can be surprisingly exciting and far less stressful then say, cod, or wow.
@Sevenizz I have a PS3 and PS4, but I'm not not nervous... should I be? O_O
Having the fastest selling system doesn't mean anything if that division is still losing money. Son has lost billions every year for the past 10 years. The products they have are losing them money big time and they don't have a plan to restructure themselves. They're in really bad shape and on the way to bankruptcy.
